Fantasy dinner party Which seven people would you invite and why? First I’d have Judy Finnegan (of Richard & Judy), because she is a real teaser and she gets on well with everyone. Simon Schama, the superstar of modern historians because I enjoy history and he is such an interesting person. When he was on that Question Time panel in America before the election he showed just what an intelligent and insightful commentator he is. Zoe Ball, our local guru and a really nice person. Stephen Fry, to bring some good humour to the party. Giles Brandreth, he is an excellent after dinner speaker, and deliciously indiscreet. Paula Radcliffe MBE, she is so committed, dedicated and competitive. Brighton-based author Louise Rennison, I like her cheeky humour. Where would you hold your party? It would be in the dinning room in the Royal Pavilion, to give us a sense of history. What food would you serve? Locally caught fish with chips, mushy peas and crusty bread, followed by a fantastic cheese board with lots of different wines and ports. What sort of music or entertainment would you have and why? I would have the Brighton Gay Men’s chorus, they are an excellent choir and also very entertaining. What would you talk about? We would talk about history, politics,sports and competitions. Is there anything you want to ask any of them? Yes, I would like to ask Zoe when is Fatboy Slim’s next Beach Boutique? Which one of your guests would you go home with and why? A lady never talks about that.

It’s not just celebs who make Brighton what it is. Behind the scenes, a lot of work is done to keep the city moving and growing. This week I met one of those hard-working public servants – Mary Mears, leader of our Council no less! Mary was born in Brighton and represents Rottingdean on the council. She reached the top by sheer persistence in talking about the issues she knew were important to ordinary people in the city. Her main passion is housing, and she believes it’s everybody’s right to have a roof over their head. Outside of politics, she helps run her family’s local business, and likes to walk, cook, read about history and spend time with her grandchildren. How did you get your start in local politics? I’ve always been passionate about local issues, and I’ve never stayed quiet about what I believe in. The local Conservative party saw this, selected me as a candidate, and in 1992 I was elected as a councillor for Marine Ward on the old Brighton Council. What would you be doing had you not become leader of the council? I would be working in the voluntary sector with the local community. I’d also be helping with the family business, as I am now on weekends; it’s a wholesale and retail greengrocers. Which famous person would you like to be? I would like to be someone who was a strong, decisive leader. I think Mrs Thatcher was a great leader because she cared deeply about reform and really got things done. What is your biggest regret? I don’t have any regrets in my public life, but I would have liked to have had more children because my family life is very important to me. Which song do you like to sing when you are in the shower? I don’t sing in the shower, I sing when I am ironing. I hate ironing and I always sing ‘I want to break free.’ If you were given £200,000, what would you do with it? I would give £100,000 to my young family and the other £100,000 to research for cancer.

Comfort & joy Latest Interiors lies back and relaxes with some top tips for seasonal bliss Well, that’s what we’d all like this Christmas, isn’t it – to spread a little comfort and joy about the place? Lie back… First stop for those intending to wind down has to be a long, hot bath – so why not select a gift to help them on their way? BT, BBC and ITV hope the deal will lead to a new generation of subscription-free devices to carry free to air channels and on-demand TV services such as iPlayer and ITV Player. It expects to offer highspeed downloads of films, shows and other interactive content from other providers in standard and high definition. The partners will push for an open, standards-based environment for broadband-based TV receivers that they hope internet service providers, public service broadcasters and device developers will back. Best practice Brighton and Hove Estate Agents Association celebrates a successful fundraising year and promoting the best in industry standards Brighton and Hove Estate Agents Association (BHEA) is celebrating a successful year despite a difficult market. The association, which represents property professionals ranging from estate and lettings agents to auctioneers, surveyors and property managers, is drawn from about 78 local firms and numerous individual members and raised £4,500 for charity. The year began in January with the Annual General Meeting where Jane Wilkinson, Sussex director for Leaders lettings agent, was elected president. She made history as the first woman to hold the post since BHEA was founded in 1886. She, said: “It was a great honour for me to be the first lady president. I was very keen to follow the traditions we have always had. The association has always been really focused on putting back into the community.“

One issue BHEA is currently addressing is the proposal to ban sales and lettings boards from great swathes of the city. The association is appealing against the move by Brighton and Hove City Council and is waiting for a decision from the Secretary of State. It could be extremely harmful not only to agents who are facing a tough trading climate, but to vendors and potential buyers. The council of the BHEA, is made up of experts from every part of the industry. It meets once a month for two hours to address any pressing issues. The treasurer, secretary, president and vice president are elected every year. There are at least five other members who are elected for three years. Hugh Tucknott, an associate partner of Parsons, Son and Basley and the BHEA's immediate past president, said: “We are there to decide which direction the association takes to deal with complaints that come in from other agents or from the public.“ In July, the BHEA held its annual cricket match. There are also golf tournaments, including the Presidents Cup between association members and a match against the
