It’s bigger than you think Our homes are filled with neglected walls, corners and other ‘Cinderella’ spaces that could be put to work. If you’re drowning in clutter, take a walk through your home and ask yourself where you could add in storage and make better use of space.

Chuck it out If you haven’t used or worn something for more than two years, it goes into long-term storage, or it just goes. Sell it at a boot sale, or give it to charity. Before you shop, consider renovating or updating items – re-cover chairs, make new cushions from old dresses. Or call in the professionals. A space therapist will perform miracles. If there’s still not enough room, place unused items in storage.

Living space and kitchens Fabulous floor-to-ceiling shelves or cupboards utilise high ceilings perfectly. A mixture of open shelves and closed boxes or units works best. Things you like or need to access can be left ‘on show’, while the rest is shut tidily away. Transform difficult corner kitchen units with pop-out concertina shelves.

Wide hallways can accommodate shelves – possibly even the full length, giving the impression of greater space.

Home offices If you don’t have a separate office, invest in a shut-away desk unit that allows you to close the doors when your work is done. If you have a garden, move your office outside: with wireless access, the garden shed is transformed into another useful room.

Bedrooms and bathrooms Think about whether there is room for a partition wall, to create a bijou ‘dressing room’. If not, fitted wardrobes with a sensible combination of hanging and shelves. Under-the-

Jamie has news of TechGuys redundancies, extra security for PC users and a new iPlayer Techguys on the move DSG International (DSGi), the group behind PC World, Currys, Pixmania and Dixons, is making 250 people redundant from its servicing and repairing division, The TechGuys. This news comes after DSGi posted a £30 million loss. With excellent on-site and in-store service and local telephone and remote services, this news will come as a shock to smaller companies working in the same arena. Mobile workstation Lenovo, the Chinese company that purchased IBM’s PC manufacturing business, have launched the ThinkPad W700ds, a dualscreen mobile workstation. With prices starting at $3,600 you can get up to 8Gb RAM, RAID configured hard drives, an Intel Quad Core 2 processor, a main 17” display and a secondary 10.6” display. Weighing in at a hefty 4.98kg these units will probably only appeal the mobile professionals with a specific need. As yet I have not found information on what the W700ds’s battery life is likely to be! Teaser campaign Sony have launched a teaser campaign for a new Vaio that promises to change the way one looks at laptops from 9 January. Sony New Zealand has put up a teaser campaign for an upcoming Vaio device. Could this be a Sony netbook? we’ll have to wait and see. Check out www.vaio.co.nz/vaio/thewaitisover Internet Explorer patch Microsoft have released a patch for Internet Explorer (IE) to fix a security hole that could enable a hacker to access memory on a PC, which could be used to install a remote application. If a user were logged on with administrative user rights an attacker could take control of an affected system, install programs and change or delete data while creating new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts were configured to have fewer rights could be less impacted than users with administrative rights. Although the press made a big shout about this, in the real world it is highly unlikely your machine will have been compromised. The patch will be downloaded automatically if you have automatic downloads configured. Or go to www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/updates/bulletins/200812_oob.mspx Apple update Apple have released an update for Leopard that improves stability, compatibility and security. Version 10.5.6 includes patches for 21 security vulnerabilities, seven of which relate to Adobe‘s Flash Player plug-in and eight which could allow for the execution of malicious code. The update also provides general stability enhancements including a fix for distorted graphics when using ATI graphics cards and improved synchronisation functionality for MobileMe. The update can be obtained via OS X‘s Software Update or as a standalone installer from www.apple.com/support/downloads/ New BBC iPlayer The Beeb have released a version of iPlayer that will allow downloads for Apple and Linux users. When iPlayer launched the BBC was criticised for producing versions that only worked with Microsoft‘s Windows XP and used Microsoft‘s digital rights management system to enforce viewing restrictions. The new version has been written with Adobe‘s AIR technology which aims to make it possible to create applications that can be downloaded to your computer, rather than embedded in browser web pages as is possible with Flash. Those who want to try it must install Adobe AIR and get the trial version by signing up to be an iPlayer Labs tester via the iPlayer site.
