I

t all started a week ago. The aches to begin with. A dull throbbing pain that irritated but did not debilitate. I pressed on. I quite often ache and to be frank I put it down mainly to the onset of old age. You may not be there yet but now in my early 50s there are signs that the body is not quite as resilient as it used to be. By Friday the dull aches had been joined by a dull headache too. Again a background niggling affliction that merely annoyed but was starting to make me just a bit grumpy. Saturday found me soaked to the skin when caught in a sudden downpour of biblical proportions. I spent all afternoon sat in the dark in steaming cashmere – in the theatre. Sunday I felt the same, just a little out of sorts but by Monday the aches were joined by a pain in my stomach. I pressed on and got plenty done but by the evening I had retired to the cricket pavilion of illness – bed. And there I languish still. Of course everyone around me is asking if it is swine flu but with no sore throat I am confident that it is not. I am treating it with huge amounts of paracetamol and liquids. I have also consumed quite a few biscuits and the emergency bar of chocolate. What do you mean, you don’t have an emergency bar of chocolate? Are you mad? Chocolate is the single most effective cure for a great many woes. I use it, advisedly, to

cheer me up. I use it as a source of energy when I hit that low point and I use it when I have a sore throat. I also use all of the above as an excuse when I simply have a craving to eat chocolate, which is not that often – really. I do have a love of good Continental chocolate which I know is to most Brits heresy. To confess that I am not a fan of Cadbury is tantamount to treason but to be frank I find the texture just a tad gritty. Surely I am not alone in this? I do enjoy the finer things in life I know, but I also have a love of the cheap and cheerful. For years I was a fan of Wagon Wheels, that was until they packed them in a sealed cellophane bag rather than an open sleeve and somehow they became too, well too fresh to be honest. I liked them soggy and slightly stale.

I ache like a gud’un, all over. My eyes are dry and my head pounds if I so much as move. So forgive me if I sign off and look for that missing bar of 80 per cent cocoa solid relief.

The Landlady The Landlady on the pitfalls of starting too early

O

hilst perusing the Regency Society’s James Gray collection of old photographs online recently, I spotted a delightful detached double-fronted building called Ventnor Lodge that once stood on Ventnor Villas. It is now a dreary block of flats. No. 1 Albany Villas, or White Knights as it’s known, is a similar delightful house but it managed to survive that awful period. And it is a block to the south, just by the sea. Having changed hands in 1967 for £16,750 and then in “Many great features 1976 for £40,000, White Knights was bought by Mr and are intact such as huge Mrs Lindsay in 1984. At that time it was back as a whole architraves on all of the house after a spell as separate flats. Part of what makes the doorframes in the hall” building so interesting now is trying to work out how the rooms were once arranged. Grand spaces remain but there are now en-suites and dressing rooms. Many great features are intact such as huge architraves on all of the doorframes in the downstairs hall. The layout of White Knights today is remarkably flexible in that both attic and basement levels can be used as almost self-contained flats or simply as extra rooms in the house. Planning permission was obtained in 1962 for one of the basement rooms to be used as a garage. The work did go ahead and the garage was accessed via a ramp through the front garden. It has now been returned, though, to more or less as it should be. An old photograph of White Knights that I saw, perhaps from around 1900, shows that the dormer window at the front is not original – but the lion on the porch was definitely there at that time. Mrs Lindsay showed me a copy of an old document relating to the building which mentions a transaction dated 15 September 1853 involving William Fitzpatrick, George Gallard and George Hall. These three men, along with Richard Webb Mighell, were the original developers of Cliftonville, my favourite part of Hove. The document actually mentions Gallard living in the building to the north of White Knights and this is backed up by the 1861 census. No. 1 though, was originally numbered 45 and its neighbour (now No. 3) as 44. The census also shows nine members of the Smith family in residence. The oldest, 52-year-old Frances Smith, is recorded as a farmer, and the youngest, two-year-old Agnes Smith, as a scholar! Get in touch: robert@buildingopinions.com or www.buildingopinions.com

h Lord. Can it really be Christmas again already? Many of my friends seem to be highly organised on the Christmas front and I am amazed by their ability to respond – with December in mind – to useful special offers in mid-September. My friend Katy, for example, who loathes spending money on anything at all, least of all herself, is one of those people who purchases her Christmas cards and certain gifts in the January clearances. I am always very much out and about in the shops during the January sales, but never have the heart to purchase useful items such as Christmas cards or gifts as they always look a bit sad with their half-price stickers on them. Besides, I am usually being way too distracted by magpie items like belts and jewellery. Katy even has a ‘Christmas cupboard’ in her house, where she stores useful items, bottles of booze and nibbles ready for the big day. I have to say at this point that I’m very impressed that any bottle of booze could actually survive in Katy’s house for more than half an hour, let alone ’til Christmas. Any Christmas Cupboard in my house would be savagely assaulted and stripped of its goodies by my rapacious children no sooner than I filled it. Practical though it is, even the thought of a Christmas cupboard is futile at Landlady Towers, and it would have to have a security system more sophisticated than Coutts & Co in order to “The use-by date was survive. I also had a look at some very good Stilton on offer at The Supermarket, but then discovered that its use-by date was 15 December, which is not much use for Boxing Day tea. It’s a good job that Christmas in our house is more about the nutty people who randomly turn up on the doorstep on 25 December, than about what we have in the Christmas cupboard. There were two people who simply arrived unannounced on Christmas day last year and I wonder what this year has in store. No Stilton, that’s for sure...

Distracted Dad Richard Hearn calms the baby with housework

H

am always late. The toddler goes to nursery in the afternoon as part of the free government voucher scheme. (Every child is entitled to two and a half hours a day for free). I don’t have to leave the flat till midday. Yet I am struggling with this. I find myself saying things like, “If you had hurried up getting dressed, you’d be able to ride your scooter! Now you’ll have to go in the buggy!” and “We are late! Do you understand what that means?” Then I hear myself, saying such dumb things to a three year old – in reality I might as well be talking to myself. Of course she doesn’t understand what late means. She doesn’t understand what time is. Imagine trying to have that conversation with a three year old. “Yeah, so, right, there’s this thing called time, and we all do stuff around it. Umm... so the sun sets and rises at the same time every day – well, sort of – and this space in between that happening means time has passed and we call that day.” I can imagine her replying “But mummy, can I have a yoghurt?” How do you explain time to a child? I’ll have to Google it. Shame I can’t say, “Ask your dad”. This is when single parenting fails. There is only so much I can offer. I can do meals, nurturing and emotional support, but blagging my way through physics debates with artistic fabrication, that’s a man’s domain I am wondering if I am surely. I remember when I was a child, my dad always actually the one being the knew the answer to everything. It wasn’t ‘til I annoying neighbour had had a child myself that I realised he had just made stuff up. Hence my history and science knowledge are a bit fuzzy, but I can name a lot of 1970s actors, footballers and blues guitarists. I think my dad got all his knowledge from books – he loved autobiographies. This Christmas I shall miss buying him the annual Christmas biography and packet of Liquorice Allsorts. It’s my responsibility to ensure the toddler and I leave with ample time to get to nursery. I am the adult. I know it takes her half an hour to walk a ten minute walk – I need to leave enough time so she can walk slowly, looking at daisies growing out of the pavement cracks, and wonder at the rubbish in the street. “Mummy! Mummy! Look! Someone has dropped a bottle top!” I need to make time for the wonderment, not leave the exact time it would take me to get to nursery if I was walking by myself. Or otherwise I will miss out on the wonder of toddlerhood and hate myself for getting frustrated at the toddler’s inability to comprehend time. A parent said to me the other day that they miss their toddler now they are a teenager. I really must make time to value these times before my little girl is all grown up and doesn’t stop to look at daisies anymore – like me. Follow me on Twitter – mrsmollymalone.

ousework stresses me out. In fact, just the thought of housework stresses me out. Which makes it all the stranger that New Baby finds the hoover calming. Sometimes just turning it on will stop him crying. Thing is, he’s not crying because of the dust – he’s not a clean freak who‘s noticed a small mark on the floor. No, the sound echoes being in the womb, so presumably it takes him back to calmer, safer days when he wasn’t out in the big, bad world. (To me, the reason why the world is bad is because of chores like hoovering, and you realise it’s big when you try and clean it). This hoover effect is a well-known phenomenon with babies. It also explains his love of the extractor fan above the I’ve been looking for hob. The loudest setting is the one that does the George Harrison’s famous same calming trick, even though it’s like standing solo album – this would by a jet engine. Sometimes, as the icing produce a state of bliss on the cake, I put the little light on above the cooker, if I could only find it although goodness knows how that links in with the whole womb thing. These good vibrations – this household appliance alchemy – turns a screaming baby into a peaceful one. Something else calms him down. Or I should say, ‘Something’ calms him down. The song, that is, sung by The Beatles, written by George Harrison. He does like other Beatles tracks, but only the ones penned by Harrison. ‘Here Comes The Sun’ is another favourite. He genuinely seems to be able to make the distinction between writers. I’ve been looking for my copy of All Things Must Pass, George’s famous solo album. This would produce a state of bliss if I could only find it. Another calming influence is a charcoal drawing of a cat in a glass frame that we have on our living room wall. The picture is not as twee as it sounds, but that‘s another story. Wherever he is, New Baby cranes his neck to see this image. Just as they say, with some portraits, that the eyes follow you round the room, so New Baby’s eyes are always aimed at the black and white cat, as if attached by invisible string. When we’re elsewhere and he’s upset, The Boy sometimes helpfully suggests “I think he’s looking for a picture of a cat.” Occasionally, he’s calm when looking up at me and I can imagine I’m held in the same esteem as these other household objects. I’m wrong, though. He’s confused by my glasses, made of that same shiny, seethrough stuff they put in front of pictures. When he’s trying to see through their reflective surface, he’s mistakenly contented because he thinks he‘s about to be rewarded by a picture of a cat.

Top of the trees The run up to Christmas really starts once we bring the tree home – real, or fake. According to the British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA) around 70 per cent of us choose a real tree – and the remainder go for the re-usable plastic (or paper – we love John Lewis’ 5ft ‘austerity’ brown paper tree!). For those that want to fake it, the trend is still for black or coloured and pre-lit – forget about green and natural looking. Many people think fake trees are a greener option, because they can be re-used and don’t leave a mess. Before you opt for one, though, remember that fashions change, many are manufactured in the Far East (using petrochemicals in their transportation here), and if not reused will end up in a landfill site somewhere. So if you choose a fake tree, make sure you re-use it. The strongest trend this year, though, is for a good, old-fashioned real tree. Most are crop-grown and sold to garden centres and shops, though it’s possible to buy direct from the growers if you visit Christmas tree plantations. Some growers (like Wilderness Woods near Uckfield) even allow you to choose and dig up your own tree. If you can’t buy direct, look for one labelled as grown in Britain by a member of the BCTGA, an indication

that the tree is good quality, and freshly harvested. Both rooted and rootless trees should be bought indoors at the last possible moment, kept away from radiators and watered regularly. Real trees are probably the most environmentally friendly solution, as they can be planted out and reused, or recycled for wood chippings and mulch.

Chestnut Tree House Nothing is likely to tug at the heart strings more than the thought of a very sick, maybe terminally ill, child. Chestnut Tree House near Worthing is the only children’s hospice for both East and West Sussex and it receives only a tiny percentage of the money it requires to operate from state funding. The rest of their costs are covered by kind donations and fundraising events. The value of the work they do is almost immeasurable. It’s not just about the care of the sick children but also about the support of their families too. This Christmas they will be holding their Snowman Spectacular Ball hosted by TV actor Ben Richards (The Bill). It will be a night of fun and glamour and they hope to beat the amount they raised last year. The Rockinghorse Appeal Perhaps one of the city’s best known causes, The Rockinghorse Appeal continues to raise funds to make the lives of children in need of hospital treatment better. Few people will be unaware of the massive task they had in helping to build the new Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital here in Brighton. You could be forgiven for thinking their work is done – but it’s not. There is a continuing need for their help and not just here in Brighton and Hove but right across Sussex with projects in children’s wards everywhere. By the time you are reading this they will have held their annual Rockinghorse Ball – an event that raises huge amounts of money each year, but that need is ongoing and the work they do to help buy vital equipment will probably never

Cancer Research UK Little Star Awards The courage of Sussex children who’ve encountered cancer is to be recognised with a unique award backed by celebrities including Leona Lewis, the Jonas Brothers and athletics phenomenon Usain Bolt. Cancer Research UK today (1 Dec) launch their annual Little Star Awards in partnership with TK Maxx. And relatives and friends of young cancer patients or survivors from across the region are being urged to nominate them now for special recognition in the run up to Christmas. Last year 38 children from across the southeast received a Little Star Award. Cancer Research UK is the largest single funder of research into children’s cancer in the UK having spent more than £9 million last year. The charity has been at the heart of huge advances in treatments. Unlike many other children’s awards, there is no judging panel because Cancer Research UK and TK Maxx believe every child who confronts cancer is extra special. The Martlets The Martlets, one of the city’s best know organisations, provides end of life care services to adults with life limiting illness including cancer. Their facilities include an 18-bed InPatient Unit, Day Hospice and Martlets at Home Service. Practical and emotional support is also offered to the families and carers of their patients including helping them through bereavement. Their main aim is to maximise the quality of life for their patients and they strive to support patient choice, dignity and independence in all that they do. The Martlets are a registered charity and all their services are provided free of charge. Overlooking the South Downs, north of Brighton, The Sussex Beacon is a nationally recognised centre of excellence in HIV care. Opened in 1992 as a hospice for people dying of AIDS-related illnesses, the Beacon is now one of only two centres of its kind in the country, with 10 residential beds and a range of community services. With the advent of new treatments, the focus has changed to that of providing specialist care and support to individuals living with HIV. hilst 2009 was a difficult year for property sales, it was certainly a boom year for lettings. People who couldn’t or simply wouldn’t sell turned to the letting opportunity, and the letting market was fast to respond. It created a much-needed, good news story for the property world and in turn helped boost the recovery of the sales market too. At the same time all this was happening, David McCarthy decided the time was right for him to make a life-changing decision. David had worked in banking for most of his adult life, much of the work linked to the property market through mortgage business. Born in Brighton, David relocated to Leicester when Alliance Building Society, whom he worked for, left Hove. It was there he met Amanda Palmer who worked in the same team at the bank and she is now both his life and business partner.

Facebook cease & desist order Facebook is going after marketing firm uSocial, the company that claims to sell ‘fans’ on the popular social networking site to its customers for marketing purposes. According to uSocial, which also sells Twitter followers and more recently started selling YouTube views, Facebook lawyers have sent a cease and desist warning to the firm. The letter claims that uSocial is breaking several laws, including illegally accessing the site. uSocial have now backed down on the selling of ‘friends’, however it is digging its heels in on its right to sell ‘fans’ for marketing purposes.This is not the first time that uSocial has been in trouble over the services it provides. The firm received a similar cease and desist note in 2008 from social bookmarking site Digg.

Firefox updates New versions of the web-browser Firefox will “close the door” on third-party applications such as add-ons and plug-ins causing performance and stability issues. This should start in V3.6.

AOL job cuts

Dell has reported a 54 per cent drop in profit for its most recent quarter, and a 15 per cent revenue decline. The company said that the biggest drop in demand was from large corporate buyers, which make up a big proportion of its customer base. Small and medium sized company sales revenues rose five per cent on the quarter, but were down 19 per cent on the year.

AOL in the US plans to cut one-third of its workforce, or about 2,500 jobs, in an effort to save millions in annual costs as part of the internet company’s planned spin-off from Time Warner. The struggling web pioneer said that it would start with a volunteer buy-out program and move on to involuntary lay-offs. The lay-offs start in the United States, where AOL employs about 4,500 people, and will extend to the company’s global operations, the company said.

According to The Times, the retailer, owned by reclusive business tycoons, the Barclay brothers, is open to approaches from franchisees but is not considering managing the stores itself. Rumours are growing around the possibility of Microsoft paying News Corporation to remove its content from Google. Rupert Murdoch, the CEO of media giant News Corporation, has spoken publicly about his dislike of free content on the web, while currently building a new website for The Times that will charge readers. Stories have now appeared in the Financial Times describing alleged meetings between Microsoft and News Corporation about the possibility of all of News Corporation’s content being listed exclusively on Microsoft’s Bing search engine. The idea provides a new possibility in the hunt for a business model for newspapers on the internet.

He has asked me for compassionate leave. What are my legal obligations? A: Employees have no specific legal right to bereavement or compassionate leave. The legal right to time off applies only in relation to time off to care for dependants. Q: How much time off should I allow? A: If there is no provision in his contract of employment to cover this type of leave you can exercise your discretion taking into account to what extent you may have granted leave, whether paid or unpaid, in the past. Q: I want to deal with his request sensitively but he occupies a key role and if he is absent for too long, could disrupt my business. A. The right to time off in relation to dependants is set out in s.57A of the Employment Rights Act 1996. A ‘dependant’ is defined as a spouse or

civil partner, a child, a parent or a person in the same household as the employee (other than an employee, tenant, lodger or boarder). This does not extend to grandparents, other relatives or friends unless they happen to live with the employee. Employees are entitled to take a ‘reasonable’ amount of time off to deal with certain events relating to dependants. This amount of time is not defined in the legislation so, in this particular case, you will have to weigh up the needs of your employee with the needs of the business. Q: Are there other circumstances in which I am legally obliged to allow my employees time off? A. Yes, these are defined in the legislation as follows: a) to provide assistance on an occasion where a dependant falls ill, gives birth or is injured or assaulted; b) to make arrangements for the provision of care for a dependant; c)because of

unexpected disruption or termination of arrangements for the care of a dependant; d)to deal with an incident which involves a child of the employee and which occurs unexpectedly in a period during which an educational establishment which the child attends is responsible for them. Q: What about time off to attend medical or dental appointments? A. Appointments of this type, with the exception of ante-natal appointments are not covered by the legislation. You should adopt a policy to cover these requests and include it in the employees’ contract. It is reasonable to ask employees to arrange appointments at the beginning or end of the working day to minimise disruption to business. Q: Occasionally, employees request time off to cover domestic matters, such as the need to remain at home to deal with repairs.
