W
ill you please shut up? No, not all of you but just one small sector of the population who do not seem to know when to put a lid on it. I refer to those people in audiences who whoop and wolf whistle to excess. I like to show my appreciation for a show, of course, but I think that applause and cheering has a time and place. When did we start whistling and whooping during a performance? It would seem that there are people out there who are triggered into such action at the slightest thing. It starts with the cheering as an act takes to the stage. In the theatre it can be the first entrance of a TV star. What a bore; it just intrudes on the plot – if they have been cast in something that requires a plot, which is not always the case. In concerts, a certain amount of welcoming applause is nice. As Julian Clary says: ‘‘I love a nice warm hand on my entrance.’’ But then moments later as that initial applause dies down and the band strike up, the whooping, clapping and whistling starts again. This time it’s in recognition of spotting the title of the first number after a few bars. Well, well done to you for recognising a tune played by an act you like enough to pay money to see. The fact that your spontaneous outburst of approval is actually marring the performance is my problem. Then there are the fans who only want to hear their favourite tunes. Fair enough I guess, except
why do they then chat through the songs they don’t know or like? Chattering really gets my dander up; it’s rude on so many levels. But nothing jars quite as much as the ‘singalongers’. You know who you are. They simply cannot resist joining in and I accept that they may be having a really lovely time. But I do not pay good money to hear a member of the audience singing in my bloody ear. I’m not sure which is worse either, the chronically tone deaf or the accomplished singer who decides to throw in a harmony of their own. Aargh!

Of course, there are acts that encourage this sort of behaviour. You would think after years in the business that they would know better. Surely they realise that even a few members of the audience who have rhythmic dyslexia can provoke a disaster. Am I alone in this, or do the majority of people think that live performance these days is simply a karaoke opportunity? Because if they do there are some great places to do that here in Brighton, and as a karaoke fan you might even see me there.

Malone hopes for an atmosphere-free Christmas
I
F
f you asked me whether I want to give my sons a life of disappointment, frustration and hopes dashed, I‘d obviously answer no. Why then, am I considering educating them in supporting a football team, when I know what this means? Tying up your own mood with the fortunes of others? Now I don’t want to alienate readers by talking about my specific team, but I may scatter a few clues. I’m not even talking about ‘proper’ supporting. I’m very much an ‘armchair’ fan, attending very few games, but still getting my fix by a process of reading sports pages, TV watching, listening to Radio 5 Live. The word ‘armchair’ is well named. If I’m not even in the crowd shouting abuse or encouragement, I If I’m not in the crowd have as much influence over the result as a piece shouting, I have as much of living room furniture. I remember listening as influence over the result a cup game against as a piece of furniture Liverpool went to penalties. The Boy – then aged two months – was asleep on my shoulder. Listening to football on the radio can be fantastic, but it can also be unbearably tense. Particularly penalties. My team lost, of course. It was an education in life for The Boy on my shoulder. Not so much ‘My First Camera’ as ‘My First Intense Disappointment’. If Fisher Price package this up for Christmas, I’m not sure it‘s going to fly off the shelves. Over the years, disappointment has taken many forms. Sometimes it is simply expectations raised too high. Other times, the ref doesn’t notice when the ball bounces a foot into the goal against the league leaders, or when we would have got into the Champions League if it wasn’t for a dodgy lasagne (these are not topical events, but it shows the bitterness lingers). The only fact The Boy knows so far about football is ‘Mummy thinks it’s boring.’ Can we just stick to playing without supporting? Out in the garden, The Boy kicks the ball with gusto, equally thrilled whether it’s gone onto the compost heap or in the goal. I should treasure this and not lead him into the altogether bleaker hobby of scanning newspapers for goal difference or the Saturday Night anti-climax of avoiding the score only to watch your team lose on Match Of The Day. (I end up secondguessing each editorial choice. If they showed the ball going out for a throw in, is it about to be a goal? That’s no life to pass on). It’s Sunday afternoon, nearing the deadline for this column. I listen to my team on the radio and they beat Wigan 9–1. Forget all the negativity! We’ll probably win the Premiership! I’m smiling, New Baby is smiling (although it‘s probably wind). This is our year!

or the single parent, Christmas time is full of many heavy concerns. Most importantly, ‘How the hell am I going to get a sitter for all these Christmas parties?’ Ho Ho Ho. I’m not worried about money, I’m cooking a roast and I’m not going to overspend. It’s just a roast with a few crackers, isn’t it? Hello Pound Shop! You don’t need expensive crackers; people expect them to be rubbish. If the jokes were good in a cracker, then Michael McIntyre wouldn’t sell 1000’s of DVDs at Christmas. Where do cracker jokes come from? Do they farm that work out to a freelancer? “Ernie, ask your dad to write some gags for the 2009 crackers, yeah?” I’m imagining Ernie’s dad then submits jokes, and after getting rid of the misogynist and racist jokes, what’s left is No wonder we all overa page of jokes about ducks walking into chemists or eat at Christmas, there’s something. I propose instead, crackers should offer words of nothing else to do wisdom – heart-warming quotes to help you through the strain of a family Christmas day: “Families are like fudge... mostly sweet with a few nuts.” Anon. All I am actually worried about is being happy for the few days over Christmas. Those few days that seem like an eternity when Tescos isn’t open. All year round, I manage lasting days without a supermarket trip, but in the Christmas void I just want to know I can go if I want to! But no, you have to wait ‘til 27 December to buy bread! But a sofa or some jeggings is easy; the sales start Boxing Day. It’s only 48 hours before normal life returns, but the Christmas void makes me feel trapped. No wonder we all over-eat, there’s nothing else to do. Suddenly I have to go on walks and watch TV’s idea of what I find Christmassy. I don’t want to see Home Alone 3! I want old black and white films and Nina Simone on loop while I overcook the chicken! (Forget turkey, you can’t make a turkey taste better than chicken, regardless of what Nigella tries to convince you). In Dickens’ books they’d have had chicken if they’d known modern day, poultry-farming, fattening-up methods. The toddler doesn’t know how many presents to expect or if a bike is better than a Barbie. All she can sense is if Mummy is happy. And, wow, that she’s allowed chocolate out of a tin! Kids really pick up on atmospheres. I just want to create a nice atmosphere and not be walking on eggshells for days. Even my own eggshells! I could party for weeks, then collapse for two days, moody mum, only happy after a pint of Baileys. But all I want for Christmas is the sound of giggling laughter and a little bit of Baileys. Good timing In the heart of a recession, Sawyer & Co launched their new brand and proved that it was the right thing to do
I
t’s barely a year since the launch of Sawyer and Co. Chris Sawyer and Adam Farrell bought the business from Ralph Tingley, their previous business partner, who was preparing to move to America and focus Tingley’s business on lettings. It was interesting news at the time, and hardly surprising that Chris Sawyer and Adam Farrell were ready to start their own brand. Of course, as all this was happening the property market was seeing the worst recession since the early 1990s. Prices were plummeting and, as they did, people were withdrawing properties for sale, deciding to wait until the market was showing definite signs of recovery. So whilst one set of factors was clearly on Chris and Adam’s side, another was most definitely not. It was not going to deter them. They simply buckled down and launched. Sawyer & Co opened, and combining Chris and Adam’s experience, they added new faces to the already accomplished team and had every confidence they could make things happen. And we are happy to report they have never looked back. Now, just under a year on, Sawyer & Co are reporting excellent figures for 2009 – far better than they could have hoped for – and promising predictions for the new year ahead. Their position in the market is stronger than ever; they have
rapidly achieved recognition as one of the most successful agents and with offices in Hove and Portslade, they operate across the city. As well as attracting lots of exciting new business they have also managed to retain lots of the existing client base from the take-over. Sawyer & Co lettings department has also been a success this year. Just recently they became members of ARLA, strengthening their position in the lettings sector. They were already answerable to other professional bodies and their main aim has always been to maintain the highest possible standards and provide clients with total peace of mind. So what has made this brave and adventurous move so successful? Well, clear thinking, realistic targets and business focus must be at the heart of the success. But along with this was the careful branding of the new business, so that as well as reflecting a change, it also reflected the businesses roots. Sawyer & Co are riding high on their first year’s trading but have their feet firmly on the ground. Their future plans are not for rapid expansion but for business consolidation. Securing a prosperous future for the whole team is second only to providing an excellent service for their clients. They are also delighted to be able to put something back into the community, and in 2009
they have become involved in a number of sponsorship projects locally. They have helped fund The West Hove Primary School Christmas event; been involved in a raffle to fund a playground, paying for the first prize; and done similar things for Portslade Infants. They also helped send kids to a theatre event for The Rockinghorse appeal. Sawyer & Co have perhaps bucked the trend and built a success out of a floundering market. Whilst all around them the profession was breathing doom and gloom, Sawyer & Co were – and are – talking of success. How did they do it? Well, surely it must be down to hard work, focus and professionalism. But maybe it’s just a little bit more; maybe these are just nice guys that people like dealing with. Their figures surely point in that direction. That and the fact that with Sawyer & Co it’s not all just take but there’s plenty of giving too. THE ART OF EXCELLENCE Lancing College art students exhibit in the exciting Youth Art Collaborative at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery
T
he work of art students at Lancing College, together with Worthing area schools the Sir Robert Woodard Academy and Davison CE High School for Girls, will be showcased in a special Christmas exhibition, the Youth Art Collaborative, at Worthing Museum this month. This will give the public an opportunity to discover and enjoy the most exciting art being produced by young people in West Sussex, from both the independent and state education sectors. The exhibition will explore the breadth and quality of teaching and resources available to local sixth form art students today. Each participating school will exhibit about thirty works. The themes of Lancing College’s show are ‘Abstraction in Architecture’ and ‘Urban Investigations’. There will be paintings and works in mixed media (fine art) and photographs by AS students. The fine art students at Lancing have been studying the neo-gothic architecture of the college and distilling it, to produce exciting abstract images. They began by looking at the visual language of many artists, including the
‘prison’ series of etchings by Piranesi in the 18th century, and the work of Kandinsky, the early abstract painter. They have been inspired by modern British masters including John Piper, whose pictures based on buildings were often abstracted into complex composite images, and also by Frank Auerbach’s responses to architectural features. The students then made observational drawings with pen and wash, in situ, in places such as Lancing Chapel, with its soaring nave. Having finished these initial studies, they took on the challenge of transmuting them into abstract and expressionist images which still contain the essence of the form, volume and scale that is felt when entering a building. The works, to be shown in Worthing, represent the early and middle stages of a major project, which will run until January. The photographs in the exhibition will show individual responses to urban landscapes. As a source of inspiration, the students began by researching the visual language of international photographers from the UK, USA, Germany and Japan. These include Nick Wood, who documented

LANCING COLLEGE 13 the building of the London Eye, and Andreas Gursky, acclaimed for his gargantuan architectural colour images taken from high vantage points. Lancing’s Art Department is outstanding. It has an impressive record of producing students who become very successful designers, photographers, architects, art historians and painters. Art plays a major part in school life and, as Lancing College has a flexible time-table, many students can study art to A Level, whether they intend to pursue a career in art or not. A number of students combine art with maths and physics, others with humanities. In recognition of the outstanding achievements of the Art Department, Lancing College commissioned the highly regarded LCE Architects to design a stunning new Art School. The building has extensive studio spaces, and all artistic disciplines are under one roof, so pupils can undertake multidisciplinary projects on a large scale and do not have to put away work in progress. The new building has won a Sussex Heritage Trust Architectural Award. It is a contemporary, energy-efficient structure that is in harmony with its unique surroundings and has unrivalled views over the South Downs to the sea in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Art School recently celebrated its first anniversary, with a visit from the Duke of Gloucester, who is an architect himself. The Headmaster and staff at Lancing College take a holistic view of each pupil’s education, with a curriculum that enables all students to fulfil their individual potential. Academic studies are of primary importance, but outside the classroom students are encouraged to develop many other skills and talents. This culminates in exciting results, with pupils gaining places at top universities while pursuing activities such as sport, music and drama to the highest levels. Lancing offers a range of scholarships (including specific art awards) which may be augmented by means-tested bursaries. A silver lining Latest Homes talks to Paul Edmonds of Insurance Claim Solutions about taking the strain out of making that claim
I
n the current economic climate, insurance companies are focusing on reducing payouts and investigating legitimate claims. So, how does one make a claim? Latest Homes speaks to Paul Edmonds of Insurance Claim Solutions to find out more.
“Property Insurance policies are easy to purchase but most of us do not understand that the real value comes when you need to claim,” says Paul. “It is at that point you realise you are on your own.” When you make an insurance claim, typically your insurer will appoint a loss adjuster to act on their behalf and investigate the claim. Their fee is paid by the insurer. The loss adjuster will look at the causes of your claim and the circumstances surrounding it and will consider the exclusions in your policy together with how much you were insured for and the values you have submitted. If necessary, they will engage the services of forensic scientists and other specialists. “By appointing Insurance Claim Solutions to act on your behalf we will pro-actively deal with all insurance company negotiations,” says Paul. “This will protect your interests and maximise your entitlement. “As loss assessors, we represent your interests and act as your professional. The loss adjuster will aim to reduce the amount the insurance company pays. To ensure you do not lose out, each claim is dealt with by an experienced loss assessor. Our network of professionally qualified surveyors, engineers and contractors allows us to fully manage your claim from the outset. “Our normal policy is to make a no charge visit to your home or premises to discuss your requirements and make an initial assessment of the claim and damage.” Insurance Claim Solutions’ core team all come from a fully qualified insurance background and are regulated by the Financial Services Authority.
Paul’s philosophy “I worked as a senior loss adjuster for ten years,” Paul says about the philosphy behind Insurance Claim Solutions. “I was tired of declining and adjusting claims, achieving fee targets and service standards. Typically, seven days after I met a policyholder on a major fire or flood, I lost sight of their needs in a flurry of new claims and visits.
“When the documentation did arrive, it was clear that the policyholder had no idea what they could claim for, or how to present it. It was also clear that the limited advice I was able to provide as a loss adjuster was not enough to enable them to structure and control the claim. They had lives to lead and businesses to run. As my full time job, this made it both easier and harder. “I wanted to create a company that provided a service to the policy holder and focused on their needs,” Paul continues. “As a loss adjuster I was unable to do this as I was working for the other side – on behalf of the insurance company. I wanted to use my professional skills and knowledge to ensure policyholders’ interests were protected and their claims were met.”

Although not part of Windows 7 I have to mention this. Microsoft have released their very own anti-virus (AV) application in the form of Microsoft Security Essentials. Providing real-time protection against viruses, spyware and other malicious software, we have found this an excellent AV solution that does not slow down your PC whilst offering formidable protection. XP Mode If you are using software on a computer using Windows XP and have concerns about it operating under W7 do not worry. In W7 you have ‘XP Mode’. This lets you run software by fooling (emulating) it into thinking it is operating on a Windows XP computer.
InPrivate Browsing Although you can download Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) for other MS operating systems it is built into W7. InPrivate Browsing enables you to surf the web without leaving any trace behind within IE. This means no history, no URLs and no cookies. To use InPrivate Browsing click the ‘Safety’ button and select ‘InPrivate Browsing’. A shortcut is to press the ‘ctrl+shift+P’ buttons.

USB Encryption I have mentioned this one before: have you ever lost a USB stick and realised how much, unsecured, confidential information you may have had stored on it? In Windows 7 you get an application called ‘Bitlocker To Go’, a subset of the ‘Bitlocker Drive Encryption’ technology introduced in Vista. Simply right click on a USB stick, or USB hard drive, and select ‘Turn On Bitlocker’. A window will appear asking you to type in a password to unlock the device, select ‘Next’ and then choose somewhere to store (or print, though this is not recommended) a recovery key in case you forget the password. Once encrypted you can be assured your USB device is safe. Do be aware that the USB device will, once encrypted, only be readable on Windows XP SP3 (with service pack 3 installed), Windows Vista and Windows 7 computers. Windows XP SP2, Windows 2000 and earlier operating systems will display your USB device as an inaccessible unformatted volume. You can only write to an encrypted drive when using Windows 7 and can only read the drive with the above mentioned operating systems.
