I don’t for one minute think that I will ever have as many people following my tweets as Stephen Fry. How he finds the time to do it at all is beyond me. He seems to be a permanent fixture on the telly these days.

T
o tweet or not to tweet was never the question. It arrived as a directive from above and before I knew it I had an account and was being asked to post the minute details of my life as I went along. What fun I thought. The process seemed easy enough and I logged in, changed my password for something that I stood a chance of remembering and started. We’re all meant to be doing it here at Chateau L’Atest and my, has it caused some chatter, mainly about what to tweet about and when. I of course found it reasonably easy to start with as my life is tweet, one long prattling tweet to be frank. So most days now I log in and drop a little morsel on the tasting plate of my life that is Twitter. What’s to lose? It takes but a moment and I am sure that you are all fascinated to know what I had for my tea, or that I have just seen the dullest piece of drama ever to disgrace a stage. Initially the thought was that I would tweet about tucker alone, but I fought for the right to tweet sweet nothings too. So don’t expect that every day I will be telling you where to buy the best chickens, or find the most disgracefully good hot chocolate. That is Red Roaster by the way, where their cocoabased beverage is divine but should come with a health warning that it can seriously increase your

I should say that I enjoy the nice polite ones. Anyone who says that they find rude letters and now tweets a constructive part of the creative process is either lying or deluded. My Latest mail bag is usually full of charming messages from readers, and the occasional billet doux from someone who thinks I should be taken to the Old Steine and hung, and from thence to an unmarked place of burial without the city confines. I quite like the latter part and have spotted a pretty woodland burial ground on the way to Hassocks which would suit the purpose well. But for now I will be tweeting away like a canary in a cage. Beware though, my tweet is equally as harsh as my bite.

O
aving witnessed a crime in the vicinity of Churchill Square, I dutifully visited Brighton Police Station to make a statement. Described by Timothy Carder, the author of The Encyclopaedia Of Brighton as being, ‘amongst the ugliest of the town’s public buildings’, Brighton Police Station is no architectural treat, but the visit reminded me of the fascinating way in which our force has grown over the years. The 1810 Brighton Town Act allowed the “The Sussex Constabulary town commissioners to appoint eight ‘watchmen’ was formed in 1968 when a to patrol Brighton at night. 16 more were number of individual forces appointed in 1815. Prior were merged” to this, a High Constable with assistants was responsible for law and order in the town. In 1838, the first fully professional force locally was set up in the basement of what was then the new Town Hall and, by 1865, there were one hundred officers and men. Much evidence exists of Brighton Police’s time at Brighton Town Hall. In fact, during recent years, the basement has been transformed into a successful police museum complete with cells. On the east side of the building it is still possible to see ‘Police’ on the frosted lower windows from the outside. The building on John Street was opened in 1965 by the Home Secretary of the day, Sir Frank Soskice QC MP. It is essentially a huge concrete slab between John Street and William Street with two protruding wings. There is a large garage underneath and a phenomenal number of aerials above. Its look has changed greatly since it was built – for neither better nor worse really – due to the addition of external cladding. It is now rather a mix of styles as the cladding conflicts with the surrounding external walls’ inlaid flints (that once complimented decorative flints on the building itself). It projects an aura of officiousness and bureaucracy, not one of cohesion and authority as it should. The Sussex Constabulary was formed in 1968 when a number of individual forces, including Brighton Borough Police, East Sussex Police and the West Sussex Constabulary, were merged. Rather pointlessly, its name was changed to Sussex Police shortly afterwards. Brighton and Hove is today arranged as a division of Sussex Police and is in turn divided into three districts. Brighton Police Station was designed by the Borough Engineer at the time, Percy Billington, in what must have seemed an exercise in efficiency and modernity. ne thing I’ve noticed since I’ve been renting rooms out to students is that most of my lodgers have their own ‘special’ smell. For most of my UK students, it’s currently the smell of mild – although it could be strong, I don’t get close enough to find out – BO. The body odour smell is generally laced with the smell of unwashed clothing, plus that fairly indistinguishable smell that could mean they spend the entire day in The Providence pub – or in bed with someone else who spent the entire night before there. At this juncture, I feel I should point out that I am not to blame for the unwashed clothing scenario, as all I seem to do on Mondays and Tuesdays is to wash Iron Maiden T-shirts and other people’s underpants, all of which are in bountiful supply. I can only imagine that my lodgers have their own personal favourites that, due to constant wear, never get to see the inside of my new Miele washing machine. The Libyan who has lived here for almost a year and now works at a rival supermarket was terribly impressed with my purchase of a new Miele washing machine. He plugs in his laptop in the laundry room, then sits on the roof terrace smoking and emailing in howling gales and all sorts, “All I seem to do so is on familiar terms with Mondays and Tuesdays the Miele. The day after I purchased it, he bumped into is wash Iron Maiden me on the stairs and said, “Congratulations. You have T-shirts and other new washing machine! people’s underpants” Congratulations is right English, yes?” “No, not right English,” I replied. “Congratulations is more for occasions like getting married, or having a baby, or passing an exam.” From the look of fear on his face, I could tell that the only words he’d managed to process were ‘married’ and ‘baby’ and yet another impasse was reached. The Libyans who have stayed here seem, in general, to have had a poor grasp of the English language and, upon reaching a point where the basic rudiments of three main verbs in the present tense are able to be pronounced in the third person singular, lose all interest in progressing any further. Having recently been exposed to the utter horror of the Imperfect Subjunctive in my Spanish class, I can only imagine how my Libyans would cope (present subjunctive) with such a task. But what my Libyan lodgers lack in grammatical skill, they more than make up for with their excessive use of aftershave, which they apply so liberally that it lingers for days after they have left. Alas, it is the type of aftershave favoured by Henry Cooper circa Xmas 1975, and no matter how many music students trudge through the house, the aftershave smell is allpervading. I think I prefer ‘eau de Providence’...

Malone wants a happier school life for her daughter

K then, so it’s the beginning of the year. Who can forget that Christmas? Especially the debacle involving the mulled wine and the scooter, and apologies for getting so childishly envious over that cracker gift. Thankfully, I got away with a caution. Sod it, I can’t keep up the pretence. Due to deadlines, I’m writing this in early December, and was trying to warm to my theme. Seeing as I can’t summarise my own Christmas, instead I’ll do one of those reviews of my own year, but rather than cover the best bits, I’ll focus on a few moments that didn’t make it in the regular column. (Yes, amazingly, there is editing at work!) Less a Greatest Hits then, more a collection of B-sides. Strictly for the fans. Yes, both of you. Firstly, some insider, technical stuff about the writing of this column. I have two Word documents open, the article itself – say ‘Dinosaurs‘ – and ‘Taken out of Dinosaurs.’ (Stop yawning at the back.) When I’m struggling with some section, it gets cut and pasted into the second document. Sometimes, they get added back. When they’re too irrelevant, unfunny, confusing or just plain dull, they remain unused. Good thing too, now I’ve read through them. Having promised to feature the best out-takes, I’ve found very little of interest. I’m left with just two moments. Let’s have a drum roll please. (It’ll drown out the sound of a barrel being scraped.) My wife, after a Ceasarian, was being wheeled into a different ward by two nurses. One nurse announced she had a paper cut. ‘There’s nothing worse,’ said the other. True story. The other moment (which once formed an entire column) was me recounting a story which I will call Wagamama Less a Greatest Hits Trousers. The short version goes thus: I’d bought a pair of then, more a collection jeans, and then decided to of B-sides. Strictly for the change into them in the toilets of Wagamama. The fans. Yes, both of you next week, meeting my wife and The Boy in town, I changed out of work trousers and into the same trousers that I had changed out of the previous week! In the same toilets! Almost exactly a week later! Yes, I know it’s not a great story, but hopefully exclamation marks will make up for it! I tried at the time to frame that story in a column with a wider message. About how others see us? The appearance of mundane time travel perhaps? Acting suspiciously in a public place? But no. It was never anything other than a dull story about clothing. Good thing I scrapped it. Next week, all the bits not good enough to go in this week’s. Reserve your issue now.

visited a Church school I am considering next year for the sprog. I balled my eyes out walking round the classrooms. (Luckily it was a large group of parents and no one noticed). It reminded me of my time at school – crying in a large group and no one noticing. Memories were brought back to me just seeing a ruler. When do you ever see a ruler once you leave school? Never. I cried partly because the school sounded so nice and mine wasn’t. But also because I realised my little baby, who I have taken for granted as this dependent baby for the last three years, is growing up. Walking around the assembly room and the playground, I realised she wouldn’t be dependent on me anymore. Even though I have been frustrated struggling singlehandedly with baby/toddlerhood, wishing it away, I felt immense sadness at the thought of her ‘leaving me’.
“Remembering my own isolation in the playground, I cried” It is a long time coming ‘til she really ‘leaves’ me. But there is subtle emotional departure once your children start spending all day with other people who will take over the moulding of who they will become. Choosing a school feels like an immense decision. Academically this may not be their biggest school year, but I feel that how they interact with others in their early school years sets a precedent for the future of all relationships. It’s really important to me that she gets on with others. It’s really important to me that she enjoys her school day because she is going to spend the next ten or so years there. I hated school. I was physically and verbally bullied at both primary and secondary school, every day for years. I never want that to happen to my daughter. We stood in the massive playground whilst the head explained that if a child didn’t have anyone to talk to they could approach a special ‘buddy’ and they would befriend them for playtime. These ‘buddy’ kids were ‘trained’ in this, apparently. Remembering my own isolation in the playground, I cried – for my own inner little girl, but mostly for not being able to bear that happening to my little girl. I cried because I was relieved and happy that schools supported children emotionally these days. Now I have to decide how much I want my child to go to this school, because to get in the school I have to attend Church! I’m spiritual, I’m not an atheist but I found even Buddhism too hardcore! I don’t like organised religion. Something happens to people when they form groups! I like appreciating the sky and sun and friends and leaving it at that really. The church I need to attend has a confession box. Maybe I can confess that? “Dear father I have sinned, I am pretending to be a Christian to ensure my child a good school.” I’m sure the father will give us a glowing reference next September. charity. There’s an army of professional help out there if you get stuck: wardrobe and home declutterers who will assess your style and taste, helping you to keep what suits – and do something useful with the rest. When you’ve sorted it all out, invest in some decent storage to put what you’re keeping away: alcoves, hallways and under-the-stairs space should all be put to good use in the fight against clutter.
Decorate Surely everyone has a decorating project they keep meaning to get around to but just don’t. Whether it’s the downstairs loo, your bedroom or the whole house, well, it’s about time you just did. Few things are more demoralising than peeling, shabby paint, and the difference some colour or pattern can make to a room is tremendous. There are fantastic colours and wallpapers around for the new season: get some samples, try them out and get stuck in.
Finish what you started…

And finally, many of us have started one or more of the above projects in January’s past, and... er... never actually finished them. Half-decorated room? Check. Unrealised plans for bedroom storage? Check. Make this year the year that you finally finish the job. And if you can’t face stripping wallpaper or laying a bathroom floor, call in a professional. Don’t just put up with the peeling wallpaper or leaky tap – why not make 2010 the year you make some of those things happen?
Move Will you, or won't you? Will 2010 be another year of bust... Or boom? If you need to move – if you’ve outgrown your home, or you’re thinking of taking that first step on the property ladder, well... Why not? There are a few caveats to bear in mind: the first quarter of 2010 might be a little shaky, as our sensitive economy gets used to the hike in VAT and public sector cuts – ouch. Not to mention a general election that, whatever the result, is guaranteed to lead to an extended period of paying off the national debt. So, if you’re in a position to move, go for it – we reckon there may be some bargains to be had early on in the year.
Improve If you don’t want to move, but still need more space, extend. Homeowners are permitted certain development rights by law, and so long as a planned extension (or loft conversion) keeps within certain restrictions, you might not even need planning permission. Go to www.planningportal.gov.uk for more information, and always check with your local planning office before work begins. January and February are often quiet months in the building trade, so – once again – the early bird should get the bargain.
Make some space If you’re anything like us, Christmas will have left you with groaning cupboards and, frankly, a ton of stuff you don’t really need. Make 2010 the year you sort it all out: tackle clutter room-by-room, sort out anything you’ve not used for two years or more, and recycle it, give it away or donate it to

A cautionary tale Phil Graves, incoming President of the Brighton & Hove Estate Agents Association looks to the future
I
t’s a nervous time for the property industry and the UK economy in general. Many of the major property companies and national property advisors make their predictions at this time of year following critical and in-depth analysis from their research teams. Strangely, very few have posted their findings so far and probably with an element of common sense. At no time have we experienced such times of financial turmoil. Never did I write into my business plan that banks would not be in a position to lend money. It’s like going to a petrol station that has no petrol or a swimming pool without water – pretty useless for the intended participants. I appreciate that certain finance is available for selective individuals and companies, but as soon as you mention the ‘P’ word – property – everyone seems to back off. So how is the property market and its people going to survive? Well, we have survived recessionary times before and we will undoubtedly do so again. It will require greater effort and imagination by all agents and advisors, and we have undertaken such duties for many years. Client care and levels of customer
service will have to come to the fore, and if anything positive has come out of the last 12 months, at least we now know the market place we are to work with for now and the medium-term future. This will not be a quick recovery.
“We have survived recessionary times before and we will undoubtedly do so again” I strongly believe that the high boom and low bust times are yesterday’s news. Looking back is always a good indicator of the future and traditionally we have seen periods of increased values with property inflation and subsequent downturns with property prices falling. These periods lasted five to seven years and invariably everyone in the business made a reasonable living and seemingly estate agents appeared at

every corner. Unfortunately for many of my colleagues, reductions in staff and offices have had to happen and those who made the quicker decisions benefited the most. Business cannot be operated on hope and a good dose of realism was needed. Now that we have all re-adjusted, business levels seem to be picking up and there does seem to be a motion for movement again. Vendors are being advised professionally (no more overpricing simply to get the instruction and sensible fees being charged) for otherwise the property will simply not attract any interest. Finance is still an issue but again there is a modicum of improvement. Mortgage approvals are still over 40 per cent down but there is, for the time being, a month on month betterment. I see this sustained, but slow recovery continuing but with some caution. UK PLC is in severe debt and the government, whatever colour, will have to rein in the overexposure by increasing taxes, reducing public spending and really get to grips with running the country. That remit is not beyond any party, but even tougher while in a period of public doubt. To conclude, it will not be an easy time ahead, in particular the first quarter or two of the new year. We will need to see a continuation of low rates of finance, hopefully job security and a slow build up of confidence in both the economy and the political scene. Do not take any predictions too seriously. What use is it to anyone to state “prices will fall another 2 per cent”? This is far too general a comment. The Sussex area and in particular, Brighton and Hove, has such a vast range of properties from city centre apartments to rural houses and cottages, from commercial to residential, and each sector will experience different types of market response to prevailing conditions. If you need to know, don’t read the national papers, but ask your agent. They are the professionally qualified personnel who know their area and property prices. They deal with them every day of their working lives. They are the experts. www.bhea.org.uk

Nexus One This apparently is the name for the upcoming Googlephone. Rumours of a Google handset running Google’s Android operating system have been around nearly as long as Android itself. However, recent developments have turned rumours into confirmed reality. In a post on the Google Mobile blog, Google’s vice president of product development confirmed that the device was being tested internally, with HTC likely to be the manufacturer.
Electronic Book The Amazon Kindle is a device developed by Lab126 (an Amazon company) to display electronic books (e-books). Launched in the US around March, Amazon have recently unveiled a Kindle for iPhone app, making it available to 60 countries including the UK. In addition to purchasing e-books from the Kindle store and viewing them on their iPhone and iPod Touch devices, users can also synchronise between what’s on their Kindle, mobile device and computer using Amazon’s Whispersync technology. This means they can pick up where they left off reading, wherever they are.
Slow Broadband A recent Ofcom report showed that nine out of ten small businesses with over five employees depended on their internet connection, but 23 per cent were frustrated by their connection’s reliability, and 15 per cent thought it was too slow. Another 15 per cent weren’t satisfied with the reliability of their mobile broadband connections. One in six small businesses are still using dialup or ISDN. 23 Terabit Broadband A consortium of companies that includes Google has signed a deal to build and operate an international undersea cable system, estimated to cost $400 million. The cable system, named Southeast Asia Japan Cable, has a design capacity of 17 Terabits per second (Tbps) upgradeable to 23Tbps, the highest capacity
system ever built so far. It is targeted to be operational by the second quarter of 2012. The 8,300km-long cable system will provide faster and more efficient broadband connectivity throughout Asia and will initially link Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, and Japan, the statement added.
Dell Touch-screens Dell have released a pair of new touch-screen enabled systems. The new units will include one desktop and one notebook, utilising Microsoft’s Windows 7 Touch platform. The company said that the desktop model, the Inspirion One 19, would be an allin-one system. The system will feature a 19-inch screen and would have a starting price of £499. The notebook system will be known as the Studio 17 and is the first notebook from Dell to offer a touch-screen interface. The company did not reveal a starting price for the 17.3 inch model, but the system is expected to be available for purchase later this month. Let us hope Dell manage to ensure the build quality is up-toscratch with this new technology.
Next Generation Mobile Network A full-scale UK next-gen mobile network has come a step closer with Huawei announcing a successful live trial of LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology with O2, while Ericsson launched what it claims to be the world's first 4G network in Stockholm. Huawei, a provider of next-generation telecom solutions, carried out the trial at the Slough headquarters of O2, during which speeds of 150Mbit/s were achieved. O2 said the trial would help the company better understand this emerging technology and prepare customers for the next generation of mobile broadband services. Meanwhile, Ericsson said that it had launched the world's first and largest commercial mobile 4G broadband network. Centred on Stockholm, the LTE-based service is available to customers of mobile operator TeliaSonera via Samsung LTE dongles. LTE is the next generation of mobile communications technology and allows for the transfer of huge amounts of data, offering speeds akin to fibre through a wireless network.
