O
h, how I wanted an iPhone. I wanted one more than I can express in words. After all I have been an Apple fan for longer than I care to remember with more Mac appliances than any sensible person would require or indeed want. Sadly my Vodaphone account updated the week before they announced that they too would be supporting the iPhone. I was cross to say the least. No, I was furious, I was going to have to wait the best part of 18 months before I could have the shiny black thing in my sweaty palm. Of course, it did mean that by the time I got it it would be the second generation model with all the latest upgrades and so on, but that was not the point. I wanted it and I “That was not the point. wanted it there and then. I wanted it and I wanted Eighteen months on and I now have one and I love it it there and then” very much. It’s a glorious little slice of loveliness, shiny and slick and shouting at me all the bloody time. Yes, the thing I wanted in my life so much, is a nag, a carping, pestering, relentless nag. OK, I do love it, but my god is it persistant. I guess I hadn’t realised that once I had synced it up with my various email accounts that it would be bleeping and pinging at me all day and, yes, all night too. Ping, a letter, ping a message, ping a Facebook notification, ping a tweet... I have found out how to turn the noise off so that I do get some peace when I choose to and although I feel nagged it has removed that moment of gloom when I hit my desk and discover 75 emails, some of which are truly irrelevant and often irreverent junk. Dismissing junk as I go has become part of my daily routine, although it does mean that I have taken to walking into lamp posts. Mr R has now taken to telling me off when I respond to its every beep, ping and ring. It’s like having a very demanding child and I know exactly how I would deal with that. Straight to the naughty corner, hands on head and no backchat. Now where is that off button?

OFF TO A SOLID START The UK property market has started the year on a very solid footing, according to new figures from Hamptons International, one of the UK’s premier residential estate agents. The agency, which compares its monthly performance figures to provide insight into the coalface of the property market, has announced that all key “front-end” indicators have improved compared with last year.
Market activity summary: • Market appraisals up 19 per cent compared with January 2010 • Available stock up 19 per cent compared with January 2010 • Buyer registrations up 10 per cent since January 2010 and 23 per cent since January 2009 • Viewings up 13 per cent compared with January 2010

The property is the star For over a year now we have been highlighting the homes of the rich and famous, the notorious and even the dead. Brighton and Hove and indeed the whole of both East and West Sussex is a magnet for celebrities and always has been. At a time when mortgage finance and economic uncertainty have severely hampered activity in the property market, the latest figures from Hamptons suggest there are encouraging signs of improvement. “Our January figures confirm that there has been an uplift in activity in the property market this year,” says Marc Goldberg, Head of Sales at Hamptons International. “The fact that we have seen notable increases across market appraisal requests, stock levels and buyer registrations – all of which are key indicators – compared with last year goes a long way in showing that the property market is getting back on its feet. www.hamptons-int.com

am not a great fan of shopping and generally loathe high street chain stores, as much for some of the people working there as for the seething throngs shopping there. Big shopping malls make me want to slit my wrists and the thought of spending a Saturday afternoon in one of them is utterly depressing. Even when in New York at the end of last year, myself and friend Miss T only managed two hours in one shop, then swerved them for the rest of our time there. I have to admit that this was partly to do with our hung-over heads being unable to cope with bright lights and colours simultaneously. We did go into Macy’s in order to make a purchase for a friend of ours back in England, then walked straight out, having failed to make the purchase, so frantic and claustrophobic was the atmosphere. I actually like New York because of its lack of shopping malls and believe the mall to be the work of Satan himself. This is also the reason that I like Cuba so much, as there are no advertisements – apart from ones for Fidel himself – and even if there were, there’s precious little to buy, apart from rum, cigars and coffee. When Churchill Square got its makeover a few years back, certain shops on Western Road appeared to suffer, then recover quite quickly. I’ve never really shopped in Churchill Square and have no idea what’s in there nowadays. So far this year, I have not been in there once, apart from to visit a certain newsagent in order to buy a birthday card for The Big Daughter. Even then I left frustrated and empty-handed, in spite of the fact that I was twice offered a giant cut-price bar of chocolate that I had no desire to buy. But in the case of the derelict Royal Alex, letters of support flooded in and the application was approved by the Planning Committee unanimously. The Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children on Dyke Road opened in 1881 to the designs of Thomas Lainson, an architect whose work includes Middle Street Synagogue, Adelaide Mansions and Brooker Hall (now Hove Museum). It is defined by a soaring brick façade with enclosed stone balconies. The crux of the matter is that Taylor Wimpey paid too much for the site and only an inappropriate scheme will go some way towards mitigating their losses. With nothing left to bargain with, residents had little choice but to support these plans in case something worse comes along. One resident who certainly is not happy is my friend Philippa Sankey, who lives on Clifton Hill. Her garden and those of all of her neighbours are set to be overlooked and, quite frankly, dominated by a monstrous replacement structure. I do not need to describe the architectural style of the proposed structure. It looks like every other builder-designed property that has been built in Brighton and Hove over the past 15 years. To end on a positive note, I am convinced that pre-emptive planning briefs from Brighton and Hove City Council are key to working out what really is best for a site before large sums of money change hands. With a plan in place in advance, an appropriate value for a site can be calculated. Those who care enough to get involved can then spend their time being constructive rather than objecting. This is where the beauty of the garden can outdo that of the house; nature means it is ever changing with colours and textures.

In my garden I thought that after a few months of freezing weather that has put me off working in my own garden I should venture out and see what was going on. To my joy the signs of better months to come were already showing: two of my Clematis had started to push out some large, sturdy looking shoots. Some are even getting big enough to start forming what will soon become leaves. The hardier of the herbaceous plants were showing large, round fleshy buds; covered in dew they looked like clusters of green and purple crystals against the cold dark soil. Unfortunately, these encouraging signs also mean that a little bit of work is needed to ensure the plants get the best start and give you a beautiful display in the warmer months when you can linger in the garden to enjoy them. The most boisterous of the shrubs can be given a hard prune now to maintain the size and shape you want them to have and to give them chance to grow large new stems to bear this year’s flowers on. These shrubs include plants such as roses and Buddleia. Cut them back as far as you want to and don’t be scared, their flowers may look dainty but they are strong plants and will put on lots of growth this year. Just make sure you are taking them back to a strong bud and then make a cut just above it. The Clematis are a little more tricky as you need to know which type you have. If you are like me and have one that flowers profusely from summer right through to the autumn on stems that are produced the same year, then now is the time to cut them and again you need to be a bit brutal. Take them right back to the lowest strong pair of buds. Because they flower on the same year’s growth, if you don’t cut them back you will get a big flowerless area at the base. The jewel-like herbaceous plants that are coming through don’t need quite so much attention. Simply remove any of last year’s growth that may still be attached. They would however be very thankful of a good mulch with well-rotted compost or horse manure.

T
iles are a classic, hard-wearing choice for kitchen and bathroom floors. But they can also look great in hallways, conservatories, and even living areas. This week, Latest Interiors brings you the lowdown on floor tiles.
A (well) tiled floor looks great, but there are other advantages too: safe, hygienic and easy to clean, they even provide a layer of noise and heat insulation. And of course if you opt for underfloor heating, they even feel cosy in winter.
Which tile where?
Natural stone
Flagstones, limestone, slate, ceramics, encaustic or even quarry: the sheer range of materials and finishes is eye-watering. Depending on which tile you choose, and how it is laid, a tiled floor can bring light, texture, depth or a feeling of space into a room. Small rooms can benefit from light-reflecting, paler, plain tiles, and larger sizes, or square tiles laid on the diagonal, can make a room seem bigger. Large, light areas can take darker colours, and texture will help add depth or define an area. Contrasting grout – darker grout with paler tiles, or vice versa, will add a contemporary finish.
Natural stone tiles give a beautiful finish. Limestone – a soft, sedimentary stone – is great in halls and kitchens (make sure you use a good sealant, though). Popular with designers, it comes in a variety of shades from parchment to a soft honey colour. Travertine is similar to limestone but has a more variegated appearance, and is also available in a variety of forms, including polished, honed and tumbled. Marble (formed when limestone is superheated under pressure over many years) gives a high-gloss polish, adding depth and light to rooms. Slate, granite and quartz are also

back in vogue – save the darker colours for light rooms and big spaces though.
Ceramic tiles As versatile as stone, ceramic tiles can be more affordable, easier to work with, and offer a greater choice of colour and finish. Older Brighton and Hove properties may still have original encaustic and ceramic tiles on doorsteps, in kitchens and hallways. If you’re interested in restoring this feature to your home, ask around neighbours and see if anyone has the originals to help get the look right. Unlike natural stone where colour and texture may very, ceramics offer uniform, clean lines – perfect for a contemporary look. Terracotta, encaustic and mosaic tiles are perfect for halls, bathrooms and conservatories. A smoother, uniform finish can also make them easier to clean and maintain.
