rowing up as I did in the cold and barren industrial wastes of the North West, I have strong memories of a life gone by. It came home to me quite recently on a visit to see my parents where they now live in Somerset, as far away from the cobbles and back alleys of my childhood as you could wish to get. “My god, they I had bought my mother a big photo album and all the appropriate bits and pieces required to put the family photos were all at it! in some kind of order. I came away and started to put together a family tree on a well known website. It was pretty easy to start as I can name most of my family going back to my grandparents’ generation. But as it went further back I started to uncover all manner of family secrets and mysteries. Serial wedders, missing cousins, odd deaths, illegitimacy (very heavily disguised), children of one family member raised as the child of another... talk about a can of worms, I had tears rolling down my face from laughing so much. Whoever thinks that permissive society started in the 1960s is very sadly mistaken. My god, they were all at it! One ancestor, a parson’s daughter, eloped with a French fisherman. I ask you, it puts most of my antics in the shade. It cheered Mum up too, raking over the past and revealing the stories and scandals. The photos as yet remain in boxes and drawers, an archive of history of which I am now a part. What shocked me most though was not the scandal, no I can cope with that. No, the real shock was seeing that the family pictures of me as a child, once familiar and contemporary, are now archive material, historical documents mainly in black and white in which I am wearing clothes that look like museum items. How ageing that is.

continuingly flourishing lettings market offering great opportunities for investment, Brighton and Hove remains stubborn in its reluctance to follow the national trend into a further declining market. An increase in lending would certainly assist in allowing more movement especially with first time buyers forced to rent instead of buying. Downsizing has become common practice in freeing up capital, but selling off the family home may not be the only way to subsidise hardhit pensions. “With many potential buyers struggling to secure a mortgage, letting your family home rather than selling offers a strong alternative,”
said ARLA’s President, Tim Hyatt. “Rental returns stand at an average of 6.1 per-cent this year, according to research from Knight Frank. ven though I’m now very much the lessyouthful side of 40, I have never succumbed to Internet dating. Thus far, I’ve still been able to meet people by going out to the pub in the normal way, although most of the people I’ve met recently have been deeply unsuitable or fundamentally flawed in one way or another. I recently went on a post-Christmas shopping trip to New York with The Big Daughter and, the week before we went, had the hair-brained idea that I would go onto an American dating site and arrange a date with a stranger for one of the nights I was there. Even if it all went very badly, at “I later found out he was least I’d have something to write about. a great speller, he just With two days to spare, couldn’t see very well” I cobbled together a ‘profile’, and stated that I was a Brit who would be in New York in January. I stuck up a rather hazy picture taken of me at a recent Christmas party and waited for the offers to flood in. They trickled more than flooded, but trickle they did in a slightly lacklustre way. ‘Your hot!’ proclaimed one man from Queens, with an enthusiasm which did nothing to detract from his appalling grasp of grammar. I was tempted to message back asking ‘My hot what? My hot water bottle? My hot dinner?’ Several messages later, which included a dearth of ‘your sexy’, ‘your funny’ and ‘your cute’ I surmised that Internet dating was definitely the way forward as miss-spellers could be eliminated at the touch of a button. Having said this, I spent the best part of the last decade with a man whose first post-date text to me read ‘apoligies for this late text’. Luckily for him, his cuteness outweighed his lack of verbal dexterity. Besides, I later found out he was a great speller, he just couldn’t see very well, which probably explains why he fell for me in the first place... After more of this grammatical suicide, rather too much mention of ‘The Lord’ and a message from a 7’2” tall (I found this hard to believe) man in Kuala Lumpur asking me to be his ‘fried’(a cannibal perhaps?), I decided that I should perhaps choose someone, rather than let them choose me. Seven foot cannibals and poor-spellers were dispatched to the great E bin in the ether and I quickly rushed through my suggested matches. Only one of them looked like the sort of person I’d usually date, so I sent him a message saying I’d be in his ‘hood from tomorrow, if he fancied meeting up’. I clicked send and sat back awaiting a response...

building that was recently shown to me by Andy Winter, chief executive of BHT, was the First Base Day Centre on Montpelier Place in central Brighton. I thoroughly enjoyed writing about that wonderful facility which serves as an open door haven for homeless and other vulnerable people. I met with Andy once again to see another BHT undertaking – the Phase One Project on Oriental Place. Phase One consists of four Regency town houses that were amalgamated during the 1930s. The combined structure was run as The St Ives Hotel until the owners retired in 1964, at which point it became a YWCA that was known as The Regency House Hotel. The Regency Project, a photographic book by Richard Rowland, gives all sorts of clues as to the dreadful condition of the Grade II Listed buildings when BHT took over in 2002. Olli Blair of “The buildings were DRP Architects (now of ABIR in a terrible state Architects, a firm that I often mention) was responsible for prior to the housing planning the project. Many residence stayed during the works as the project was divided into trust’s involvement” two halves. Two of the four buildings were vacated and transformed, followed by the other two once their occupants had been moved across. Lath and plaster partitions, woodchip wallpaper and orange-stained decorative pine boards were all consigned to the skip. It is quite clear from Richard Rowland’s photographs, and from the friendly and dedicated BHT team, that the buildings were in a terrible state prior to the housing trust’s involvement. Merging four townhouses into one gives rise to the inevitable problem of there being too many front doors and staircases, whilst original corridors run back-to-front, rather than across. In the case of Phase One, two of the front doors have been removed, but the extra staircases are really a blessing when it comes to fire precautions. As for corridors, on the ground floor at least, space has been taken from the large front rooms to create a logical thoroughfare between the buildings – it works. BHT’s uncompromising drive to provide quality accommodation for the vulnerable, and Olli Blair’s architectural flair, proved a winning combination. y birthday is at the end of December. If I get more than one present and more than one friend in town for a drink, then I am ecstatic. I guess in life the less you are given, the more appreciative you are when you do receive. It sounds odd but I wish my daughter had been given less presents for Christmas. Will she expect that much every year now? Will Father Christmas be a baddie who shouldn't be believed in anymore if her 2012 Christmas stocking consists of five satsumas, a tangerine and only that one “I just wonder, that when beautiful shiny red bike? things are easy to get, if When I was little I remember one main it’s possible to be content” present at Christmas. But because my daughter is raised in a lone parent family she receives presents from not just Santa, but myself, Nana, my boyfriend and his family and then also the nan, gran, aunties, cousins etc from her other family on her dad’s side, not to mention her dad. That’s a lot of thank you cards. That’s a lot for a five year old to truly appreciate. I don’t see how she will hold any value in things if they come so easily. Is it mean of me to wish she got less? It’s because I want her to grow up with a sense of value. To want something for months and then feel the pleasure and excitement of finally getting what she desired. So she will look after that object, value it. She has beautiful gifts but I’m sure she can hardly remember who gave her what. With my daughters’ family being far away they of course want to show their love in a gift, as they don't see her as often, so our tiny flat is full of stuff this January. She now has six pairs of gloves, three new hats and two Sylvanian cars! Yes, we are a two car family! I need a wedding type gift list with everything ticked off to avoid duplicates. 1. Red shiny bike 2. Tangerine 3. Satsumas, (no clementines please...). You may think I'm being ungrateful but it’s exactly ungratefulness I'm worried about. I do appreciate the cost and thought gone into all these beautiful presents, I just worry a small child won’t if that’s what they get used to. Perhaps because my birthday is so close to Christmas, I’m used to combined presents explaining why I am shocked by the amount of gifts she has received. Maybe I’m being old fashioned. I just wonder that when things are easy to get, with no desire built for them, if it’s possible to be content, to be happy with what you’ve got. My boyfriend gave me a gold watch for my birthday, I’d wanted one for ages! He remembered! I was very appreciative exclaiming; “Thank you! If I’d bought it myself I’d have bought one with a round shape face though.” Oh – it seems quantity of gifts as a child has no bearing on ungratefulness.

week late here’s my main resolution: stop getting annoyed when my children are being, well, there’s no other word for it – childish. Sometimes it’s when they are doing those things that utterly sum up childhood, that I’m either impatient or, and again there’s no other word for it – distracted. Often it’s the moments that you should later look on with particular fondness that, in the present, I get particularly moany about. For example, puddles. Recently, we went to Middle Farm, and Youngest™ took massive delight in jumping in every single puddle that he saw. Water rose up his trouser legs in a capillary action. It was bitterly cold, and I could hear my own Dad’s voice in my head saying he’d get a chill. But while Youngest™ was loving it and passers by looked on with misty eyes, I spent my whole time ineffectively telling him off. Adults don’t normally jump in puddles. This is probably their loss. We don’t run normally either, except as ‘exercise’ or when we’re about to miss a bus, or that funny little skip-run, when a car has let you cross the road and you’re showing willing. Kids run all the time. A child will suddenly run from one side of the room to the other just in order to get there quicker, or start running when going to the Post Office simply for the hell – or heaven – of it. They’re not even trying to lose weight. “A child will suddenly run Puddles and random running are pure childhood, from one end of a room to the favourite memories of the other just in order to the future. And there’s me telling them to ‘stop doing get there quicker” that’ or ‘slow down’ while it’s happening. Relax – that’s the key. Enjoy these moments. I actually said the phrase, ‘play something less exciting’ to The Boy the other day. It was bath time which meant that it was nearing night-time and I was desperate for Youngest™ to go to sleep. The Boy was actually doing a good job of keeping Youngest™ amused, but I was busy interjecting. At the other end of the day I can get impatient when The Boy is asking me to choose which Ben10 character to draw. I’m sometimes a bit short with him and won’t even pick from a choice of two. Yes, this is mainly because it’s 6:25 and when I find it hard enough to do quite simple tasks (e.g. breathe in, breathe out) but it’s not really his fault, I’ve had a bad night’s sleep. So that’s my resolution, I’ve decided to stop being Grumpy. As we near the end of the pantomime season, answers on a postcard as to which of the other six I should try and become.

In older properties, the trend is to combine kitchen and dining areas or knock through between front and back rooms to create space. Unit values If you don’t need a full re-model, then simply replacing tired and broken old units with new, smart storage – and some shiny new doors – will

hard-wearing, and should give many long years of service. Corian and other composites can be moulded to seamless, custom shapes, including integrated sink bowls and drainers. Cast concrete also combines good looks and versatility. Glass, stainless steel and laminate worktops give a cool, modern finish. However, wood is making a comeback, and hardwood worktops add light and warmth to cool, modern kitchen spaces. Combine your shiny (or hardwood) new worktop with a chic glass or stainless steel splashback and some clever lighting for maximum effect.
Science appliances Integrated appliances give the sleekest finish, but they (and their unit doors) will cost a little more. If you’re on a budget, choose from an increasing number of coloured and stainless steel appliances, and lots of clever tricks – automatic off switches and energy monitors, refrigerators with integrated iPod docks, and flip-down TV screens. A couple of my employees are volunteer staff at the Olympics this summer. Do I need to grant them time off and, if so, do I need to pay them? A. Your staff don’t have a legal right to take time off for volunteering. You can decide to give them time off, paid or unpaid, or you can oblige them to use their holiday entitlement. They can’t insist on being paid, unless of course they take annual leave. If they don’t want to use holiday, you can agree to it being “special leave” and then it will be up to you to decide whether that will be paid or unpaid. It might be a good idea to consider introducing a Policy in advance of the Olympics and communicate it to staff. The Policy could cover your position in
respect of those who are volunteering and also in respect of those who want time off to watch the Games. If you introduce a Policy, everybody will know where they stand, which should avoid problems later. Perhaps a simple “first come first served” would work best to ensure that there are enough staff at work to meet the business’s needs during the Games. Q. I have my suspicions that a few staff will “pull a sickie” to watch either the Olympics or Euro 2012. What can I do to avoid this and what can I do if it happens? A. This is a tricky question because proving someone wasn’t ill after they have taken a day’s absence is always
difficult. Before the events you could have a meeting with staff and encourage them to be upfront and request a day’s holiday if they want to watch either event. You could say that you will consider flexible working requests but that you need to have these requests in advance. You can also make it clear that you will be taking a robust approach to those who have the odd day off here and there during the events and that disciplinary action will be taken against those who are found to have taken time off when they are not genuinely ill. You should remind staff that if they are ill they must telephone you (and not email or text) to advise as to the reason for their absence and when they expect to return.
