ussex is well served by the National Trust when it comes to grand mansions with gardens such as Wakehurst Place, Petworth House and others. But a little further afield, in the north-west of Kent, Chartwell, the home of Sir Winston Churchill, is well worth a visit. Chartwell was given to the nation in 1966, a year after the great man died. The red-brick pile was bought by Sir Winston and his beloved wife Clementine in 1922 – some years after his years at a preparatory school on Brunswick Road in Hove – as a run-down extensively-modified Elizabethan “Its stepped gables manor. The architect Philip Tilden was commissioned to remodel the cascade down towards building and it wasn’t until 1924 that the Churchills moved in. the lakes below, which Visitors are greeted with an engaged portico with Corinthian Churchill himself columns and egg and dart detailing. The portico looks so helped to dig” much like grey stone from a distance, and even up close, but it is actually very old wood. Oak is scattered around the house. A barrel-vaulted ceiling upstairs is incredible. The rooms are laid out as though the Churchill family were still living there. His trademark cigars rest in ashtrays throughout. A museum area contains all sorts of Churchill-related items, including some of the plethora of gifts that he received over the years. On display are many of his uniforms and items of clothing including a velvet siren suit by Turnbull & Asser. I think that today it would be called a ‘onesie’. He even owned personalised slippers with the initials ‘WSC’ emblazoned across the front. A criticism of Chartwell is that it is rather poor architecturally. It consists of a mix of styles and the interior layout is awkward. Some ceilings are too low; others are inappropriately high. It is not grand enough for the estate, some say. The façade is unimposing. But from the rear, which looks over the Weald, Chartwell does work. Its stepped gables cascade down towards the lakes below, which Churchill himself helped to dig. Walls throughout the estate were famously built by Churchill during his years in the political wilderness in the 1930s, which is confirmed by a stone tablet within the extensive kitchen garden. The gardens and adjoining woods are breathtaking, but not so large as to seem disconnected from the house. Chartwell is no Blenheim Palace, the magnificent birthplace of Churchill, but the intimate house and relaxed grounds add up to something different – the ultimate English country house. robert@buildingopinions.com, www.buildingopinions.com

Ahmed is passionate about properties and about comprehensive customer service, and this shines through in his dealings with his new team at the Lewes Road office. The newly established team are brimming with positive energy and the six-strong team are very vocal about what makes for good customer service. We asked Ahmed how does Khalil Properties differ from other agents and what is the range of services on offer. “I treat my landlords as though they were my business partners, where they have the property and I have my services and skills in managing their properties. I strive to increase the potential and the rent of the property, looking after their assets and housing good quality tenants as if the property was one of my own. A priority is making sure they receive the rent in a timely manner, and with minimum void periods between tenancies. I also regularly review the rent to make sure the landlord is getting the best price possible and I am constantly keeping up to date on legislation. We also project manage small or major refurbishments if and when required.

Making a house your home Property expert Dominic Arnold on the benefits of a loft conversion
F
ollowing on from our piece on loft conversions in our January column in which we outlined 10 things you need to consider before embarking on such a project, we now look at the detail involved and what needs to be decided on prior to committing the cash to do the works. Most loft conversions start at £25k + VAT for anything other than a bog-standard bedroom space and staircase. If you're looking to increase the value of your home while improving its versatility then your first consideration should usually be to convert your loft. And why might that be? Because most estate agents will confirm that developing the loft will immediately add the same value in equity as you spend in costs to do the works (rather than other projects within the home (like a kitchen extension) that will take much longer to realise their worth). If you’d like to reveal and use the unclaimed space in your roof, have you thought about precisely what the new area could be used for? What do you need the new space to do? Once you have determined how to develop the roof space, what’s the best way to utilise the area? Your immediate options include: a home office; an extra bedroom (with an en-suite bathroom/shower room); a children’s play area; an adults’ play area(!); a games room; a studio for crafts or hobbies; or a library. If you’re a family of five in an average terraced house in Brighton or Hove then a loft conversion is probably inevitable, unless you’re considering an affordable move to a detached home in the country (fortunate for some). However, if the kids have left home, and are unlikely to return (if you’re lucky) then developing the loft might be overegging the property pudding as it were. Remember, converting the loft only generally adds the same amount of value to the property as it costs. However, for most of us who need the extra space, it’s a great solution. To avoid selling your home, finding another and meeting all the conveyancing, stamp duty and moving costs, converting a loft will result in an enhanced lifestyle for all the family. andlady Towers is currently a very jolly place to be. Gone are all the noisy North Africans and screeching Spaniards, to be mainly replaced by inscrutable Oriental women who glide around the house like ghosts on well-oiled segues, cooking, cleaning, doing their own washing and leaving not a trace of detritus behind them. Even the French girl gets on with them and they all sit out on the roof terrace – when the hail and gale force winds let for long enough – drinking tea, speaking fairly proficient English and giggling until the wee hours. Having spent the past ten years, to all intents and purposes, hiding from my lodgers, I now enjoy having a pleasant chat on the stairs or in the kitchen with one of my ladies. I am not sure whether it is because they are nice people or if I am becoming a nicer and more tolerant person as I get older. I would be surprised if it were the latter. Even The Big Daughter has mellowed slightly and no longer stalks around menacingly, or crouches in the corner of the sofa like a seething black widow ready to pounce on any poor suspecting imbecile who mistakenly tries to Skype in the living room.
