David Wilson Homes, the developer and a major sponsor of the ‘Big Nibble’ weekend, had a free competition based on a simple question regarding David Wilson Homes’ nearby development at Wickhurst Green off Five Oaks Road, Broadbridge Heath, in West Sussex. “We had an excellent response to our competition, which brought a number of people to the site”, says Pina Masella, Sales Advisor at Wickhurst Green. Winner of the hamper, Pam Burbidge, says: “I thought it was an intriguing question about one of the show homes, and as I am temporarily living in a rented house in Horsham and am currently looking to buy a house, it was the perfect opportunity to see their show homes.” Pam sold recently in Fetcham but wants to reside in Horsham because of its excellent road and rail links, and easy access to Polesden Lacey, near Dorking, where Pam is a tour guide. Latest Homes met with Tony and Katherine Adams who revealed the company which made their home complete: “We found a local company who came up with the perfect solution to achieve our perfect grown up family home.” When they bought their house in Lewes, Tony and Katherine knew they wanted a longterm family home. Selling their property in Brighton so that they could be in the right position at the right time as buyers, they started searching for their perfect family home. Originally built in 1927, the house they found hadn’t been modernised for years. They moved into rented accommodation whilst the majority of the essential works were carried out.

Tony and Katherine and their two young children, like most families, were on a strict budget, and thought they wouldn’t be able to do any extensive building work for some time. But when the opportunity arose - through a legacy left by Tony’s mother - they decided that they would enlist expert help to extend the house to enable them to enjoy more family space on the ground floor.
We found a local company who came up with the perfect solution to achieve our ideal grown up family home But who to choose? As it happens, the couple know Nick and Louise Andrews, who discovered DMB Solutions in Latest Homes magazine and were themselves featured in October 2013. On the strength of this personal recommendation Tony and Katherine called DMB, and when a member of the DMB design

team came to visit for an initial consultation, the couple explained that what they wanted was to have an extension which would take in the view of the garden whilst also providing better access to it. DMB came up with the perfect solution, so that the appearance of the rear elevation would appear seamless and an addition would give perfect symmetry to the ground floor. DMB suggested a pitched roof to the front which followed the line of the main roof, whilst matching the tiles using renovated roof tiles, giving the right proportional height to the extension. DMB Solutions offer a fixed price quote for works which include planning and building regulation applications, and in this case Tony and Katherine were allowed to develop under Permitted Development Rights, which doesn’t require formal planning consent. Although they did consult with their neighbours over the design. Tony and Katherine told Latest Homes “We are thrilled with the workmanship that DMB Solutions carried out, in particular the attention to detail matching in the picture rail and the window reveals, and the thoughtfulness and care that was delivered during the build.” The diligent team screened off parts of the living area to prevent dust and unnecessary disturbance, and the couple were considerately kept informed of progress at every stage. Robert Nemeth: Embassy Court works
I
t was ten years ago that work started on transforming Embassy Court from one of the most hated buildings in Brighton and Hove into one of the most appreciated. In 2004, it would have been hard to imagine Embassy Court in its original 1930s glory. Flats were all rented initially, and rents were once £500 per year, which was incredibly high considering that a whole house in Peacehaven could be purchased for £300 at that time. Successive difficult freeholders and leaseholders were responsible for the decline of the building. It wasn’t until 1998 that the leaseholders, led by Hilary Imbimbo, were able to wrench the freehold away from the freeholder of the day, Portvale Ltd. It was years before further legal wrangles were overcome and funds raised to overhaul the famously-deteriorating ruststained exterior. The 2004/5 works, carried out by architects Conran & Partners, cost something in the region of £5 million. Flats were then regularly popping up at auction for £50,000. They are now each worth well over £300,000. The determination of the leaseholders of Embassy Court must be praised. A number of problems remain, though, despite attempts to fix them in 2013. One leaseholder, who loves the building so much that he has constructed a scale model of it in Lego in his lounge, feels that several basic errors were made in the 2004/5 works. One example is that balcony doors were changed to open inwards rather than outwards. Water now floods in. The number of panes of glass per door/window was increased leaving more gaps for water to attack. Another error relates to some rather attractive mauve terracotta tiles that line the parapet wall of each balcony around the building. Apparently, it was noticed early on that each expands, which means movement beneath balcony windows when a whole row moves. It is thought that Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus School in Germany, was brought in to investigate after the problem was noticed during the hot summer of 1936. It was rectified at the time by changing certain window details, but then recreated in 2004/5. It is yet to be remedied for a second time. The involvement of Gropius – one of the founding fathers of modernist architecture – was not unexpected. Andrew Bullock and Simone Thorogood get their hands dirty for Latest Homes Live ... and we mean literally

imone: A couple of weeks ago we wrote about the fabulous Geoff Stonebanks and his amazing garden, Driftwood. Andrew got to visit it over the summer for the annual MacMillan Garden Trail. I was very jealous indeed. Well, last week I finally got to see the place for myself, as we went back to Driftwood to shoot a series of weekly segments for Latest Homes Live with Geoff, who is our resident Alan Titchmarsh (minus Charlie Dimmock and a chat show). We had so much fun! Geoff set Andrew and I a series of tasks, all based around the kind of useful tips that will come in handy to the viewers at home, when it comes to prepping your garden for the upcoming colder months. From propagating ferns to turning an old piece of furniture into a garden ornament, we took a stab at several of the gardening skills that Geoff is a dab-hand at.

ndrew: After we’d washed the compost from underneath our fingernails, I then headed off to visit a fantastic property, designed by the extremely talented Catherine Smith and Jim Bennett of ar:ior designs. In a first for Latest Homes Live, I actually met the visionaries behind one of our exceptional homes. We landed an exclusive interview with the directors of the company, who let us into one of their clients' properties to walk us and talk us through the inspiration, the idea and the finished design. ar:ior design is an independent practice with a plethora of inspirational and practical experience through a diverse range of projects – of which this project was just one! What stands them out from other companies is the very honed combination of design experience that Jim and Catherine provide. They have balanced the skills and expertise of a chartered architect, a historic building conservation specialist and interior designers, and have a combined experience of over 40 years.
Their range scales from conceptual and feasibility studies to small scale detailed bespoke joinery and interiors, which was what I got an exclusive look at. It’s amazing what you can do to a space by having a designer develop the storage potential in your home. You'll see what I mean when you watch the show, but look out in particular for their ingenious hiding of household appliances such as washing machines and tumble dryers. Their other projects also include a variety of sectors and end users from commercial office, hotel, bar and restaurant fit-outs to residential extensions, refurbishments and show home styling. It has to be said that the client base of this team reflects their diverse range of projects with clients ranging from private residential clients to multinational corporations. It was great to feature Catherine and Jim on Latest Homes Live and we hope to work with them again soon!
