ents across Great Britain went up by 1% in the 12 months to September, the Office for National Statistics has reported. There were large regional variations. In Scotland, rents rose by 1.4%, in England by 1% and in Wales by just 0.2%. The place with the biggest annual rent rise was London, at 1.5%. Excluding London, rents across Great Britain grew by 0.8% – reflecting just how much the capital distorts the national picture. Unlucky trio ...

Robert Nemeth on the King Alfred redevelopment

s a landlady, and indeed, in life in general, I find that once something goes wrong it is unlikely to be the only thing to go wrong; it attracts other problems like flies round the proverbial. Last week, while doing a load of washing, my (incredibly expensive) machine suddenly began to emit an irritating 'alarm-clock-type' sound, then stopped working mid-cycle. 'Waterproof', flashed the sophisticated display on the front. This explained nothing about why the wretched thing had stopped working. By some miracle, I managed to find the manual, and in the ‘troubleshooting’ section next to the problem listed as ‘Machine says waterproof’ it gave no further instruction apart from ‘phone agent’, whereas all other problems had a practical solution. Greatly angered and reluctant to telephone the ‘agent’, who would no doubt drag me through a series of call option hoops with no ultimate solution and would charge me handsomely for doing so, I had a look at the machine myself to see if there was an obvious problem. I soon found a dinner-platesized rend in the rubber seal, thus rendering the machine far from ‘waterproof’. As I fumed next to the machine, The Big Son appeared behind me with an armful of washing. I told him the machine was not working. “Well, there’s a big effing hole in the rubber thing, so I’m not surprised,” said The Big Son. The Big Son has always had a deeply annoying propensity for discovering problems in the house with cataclysmic potential and saying absolutely nothing about them until it’s too late; this being a prime example. As I was about to stuff him in the ‘big effing hole’, my telephone rang. It was my downstairs tenant informing me that her overhead lights had fused. So there was problem number two, then. Fortunately, both problems were fixed (at great expense) before I headed off to Turkey at the end of the week, although I was tempted to leave The Big Son with no washing machine. As I sat on the ferry from Bodrum to Datca – where I live in Turkey – I smugly assumed that by leaving the country I’d managed to swerve the third problem that might follow the first two. When I arrived at my little house, all appeared to be well. At first. As darkness fell, I switched on the light ... and nothing happened. There was no electricity. At least The Big Son wasn’t there to tell me that it hadn’t been working for ages.

 ROBERT NEMETH n November 2004, a deal was signed by Brighton and Hove City Council and Karis Holdings, with architect Frank Gehry, for the redevelopment of the King Alfred site in Hove, which was to include a new £30 million sports centre and 590 homes. By November 2014, ten years later, potential developers must have registered interest if they want to be involved in the next attempt. If momentum continues, we should be seeing a debate next year on which scheme, and which architect, will be picked. Ten years ago, it was between architects Frank Gehry, Richard Rogers and Wilkinson Eyre. Thinking back to Gehry’s unpopular proposal, I suspect that towers and weird architecture will be avoided this time. It is thought that the new sports centre is likely to cost £40 million, including its £7 million underground car park. This is a lot of money to raise from the 400-500 homes that will no doubt end up on the site. I should mention that the new centre does not have to be built in the current location and may well end up, instead, by Hove station or on Benfield Valley. This discussion is still to be had. Last month, a petition with 2,068 signatures calling for a flexible 50m pool (rather than the series of separate small pools which have been proposed by the council) was submitted by Mike Weatherley, Member of Parliament for Hove. Every local swimming club including the Shiverers, Brighton Swimming Club and the Dolphins Disabled Swimming Club, backs the 50m option. It would be a brave developer who ignores those who care deeply about, and actually understand, swimming provision locally. Similarly, the council has proposed a three-rink bowls hall for the new centre. Such an arrangement would immediately spell the end for the thriving King Alfred Indoor Bowls Club which was founded in 1946. Whoever drew up the specification should have known that six rinks are required for any meaningful competition. Another petition is being prepared now. My own dream scheme would occupy the current seafront site with Thomas Heatherwick as architect. It would have a 50m pool and six-rink bowls hall, and possibly a single sleek modest tower on the west side. From there, a long winding path, through a revamped Western Lawns with landscaped gardens and adult exercise parks, would lead to Hove Lagoon. W Andrew Bullock (the believer) and Simone Thorogood (the skeptic) are ghost busting for Latest Homes Live ndrew: We are currently in my favourite time of year. I love late summer, the autumn and then Christmastime. And Halloween is always an excuse for a bit of fun, so we thought we’d film a unique edition of ‘Exceptional Homes’ to mark the occasion. The homes in it were still exceptional – perhaps two of the most exceptional yet – but they also came with an extra feature: ghosts! Now, whether you believe in the paranormal or not, wrapping up on a cold night and listening to ghost stories by candlelight is always fun to do. I actually do believe in ghosts. Perhaps it was my obsession with Ghostbusters when I was a kid, or perhaps it’s because I used to work in a theatre that was allegedly crawling with spirits. Everyone who worked there had at least one encounter to their name. From pianos that played themselves to chairs rocking back and forth on their own, to visions of women sitting in the upper circle during hours that the auditorium was closed – each member of staff had a tale to tell. Including me.

I was an usher. I was standing at the top of a flight of stairs at the back of the theatre that lead down to a fire escape. I was counting out my float for the upcoming performance when I heard footsteps on the stairs behind me. On turning around, there was

nothing there and the sound stopped. Must have been my imagination, I thought. Then they started again. I turned. They stopped. Odd. Then they began for a third time, and became increasingly louder and nearer. It was literally the sound of somebody walking up the stairs towards me. Only this time when I looked, they didn’t stop. Yet, still, no-one was there. I stood at the top of the stairs as I listened to an invisible ‘thing’ walking towards me, which got louder and closer, step by step. Then, they shuffled to a stop – right in front of me. Needless to say I was very quick to seize up my money and make a dash back to the office, where I was told that the ghost of a night watchman who worked at the theatre in the early 1900s was thought to ascend those stairs. It would seem that he and I had met. Simone, on the other hand, is a skeptic. So she was on hand, whilst filming ‘Exceptional Haunted Homes’, to keep me grounded. We went to visit Hangleton Manor. This stately home is the second most listed building (second only to the Royal Pavilion) in Brighton and Hove. It's now a stunning and historic pubrestaurant, dating back to as early as the 1500s. Apparently, oaks were cut from the woods surrounding Hangleton Manor to build Lord Nelson's fleet, and the stone in the walls has come from Lewes Priory, demolished when the monasteries were abolished in 1537. Perhaps it was the transference of holy building materials that injected some spookiness into the house, or perhaps it was the goings on of the residents that frequented the building over time. If you want to know what the monk did in the dovecote, or what the scullery maid threw from the attic window (each of which being an alleged cause for the hauntings) then you best tune in. Secondly, we went to Preston Manor, where we were shown around and talked through the ghostly tales of the many stately rooms. Again, this building used to be a home, and is now not a residence. But its colourful history provides us with the reason for its exception: Built in 1250 and restored later on, Preston Manor was home firstly to the Lord of Preston. Later on, and most famously, it was owned by the Stanford family, one of the richest families in Sussex. The building has a walled garden, designated as being of historic interest, has old flint walls, a ruined wellhouse and a pet graveyard, among other features. It’s reputed to be one of the most haunted buildings in Britain: it has been the subject of many ghost tours and television programmes – Latest Homes Live being one of them. Simone and I spent some time in the Cleves room, where seances were famously executed. It was here where the most prominent spectre of the house, The Grey Lady, revealed herself and communicated with the attendees of the seance. Her story is a fascinating one, as are the events that continued to happen over the years. Want to know more? Tune in to our show! Then there are the maid's quarters, which became a very exciting part of the show, as we might have actually caught some paranormal activity on film.
