FRIGHTS ’N’ BITES Hamptons International hosts a Halloween bake-off to raise money for Cancer Research UK n Friday 31st October, branches at leading agent Hamptons International hosted a Halloween style bake-off and raised more than £600 for its charity partner, Cancer Research UK. The bake-off was organised by a number of branches throughout the network (Chichester, Horsham, Guildford, Farnham and Brighton and Hove) and those who took part were given the task of creating Halloween-themed bakes. The bakes were then judged by independent adjudicators and sold to the local community to raise money and awareness for Cancer Research UK. Culinary creations included; a graveyard sponge cake with edible grave stones, severed-finger biscuits, gingerbread ghosts and eyeball cupcakes on sticks. However, the highlight of the day was celebrity guest judge and runner-up of 2014’s Great British Bake Off, Kate Henry. Kate, who is a local resident, judged their bake-off and crowned Lily Hawkins, Team Administrator, as overall bake-off champion and winner with her four-layered, sponge

and buttercream Pumpkin cake. Karen Standing, Regional Director at Hamptons International says; “The Halloween bake-off was a complete success and we’re delighted to have raised over £600 for Cancer Research UK. I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who got involved and made the event a huge success – we have some talented bakers in our midst. We’re also completely overwhelmed by the generosity of those who gave so generously and purchased one of our Halloween culinary creations. Finally a big thank you to Kate Henry, the baking extraordinaire from this year’s Great British Bake Off”. The Halloween Bake Off is one fundraising activity of many that Hamptons International has been involved in throughout the year to raise money for Cancer Research UK. M
uch as I was impressed by the speed at which the Turkish electricians attended to my broken electricity cable, I was not surprised with the ‘working’ scene I found when I returned home from the beach on the day that the work was in progress. While the older electrician – who looked like a friendly walnut in jeans – laboured at the top of a very tall ladder, the two impish lads who, I assume, were there to help, chased around the field trying to belt each other around the head with a substantial bit of olive tree; not exactly an olive branch then ... I offered them coffee and they asked for water, which I fetched and they – somewhat embarrassingly for me – had to drink from plastic wine glasses. Feeling guilty about the wine glasses, I forced them into having coffee as well, into which they each dissolved so much sugar that one could stand a spoon in it. Still, the job was finished in one day and electricity, cold beers and hot showers were restored. Back in Blighty two weeks later, I received a text from one of my tenants – a husband and wife couple – who gave me notice that they were to leave in a couple of weeks. They have lived with me for eight weeks and although I met the husband when he looked at the room, I’ve never met the wife, so different are our daily routines. Being as I haven’t managed to meet her in eight weeks and they’re due to move out in two, I assume I’ll never meet her, which seems most odd, although it kind of epitomises my idea of a perfect tenant. I have therefore reinstated my ad on the Spare Room website and am struggling to cope with the deluge of people wanting to look at the room. In the past, I’ve always had students from language schools sent to me and have had no part in the selection process. The 20 stone Kuwaiti who’d just had a stomach operation, destined for my room at the top of 64 stairs, was a case in point. There’s no way I would have chosen him, or he I, had we been given the option. I’m afraid that the internet method of selection does not bring out the best in me, and I become judgemental, critical and personphobic. Anyone who has a photo that looks like they should be on a dating website is immediately dismissed. I am not interested in how attractive a potential lodger might be. Neither do I want a needy person who wants to make friends. Frankly, they’ll be lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it) to bump into me at all, let alone get to share a bottle of wine with me. After much culling, I made my final selection and I’m now standing in the living room window awaiting the arrival of the first candidate. I have to stand in the window as the doorbell still doesn’t work (10 years and counting). Standing in the window does not help with my person paranoia, and I’m fervently hoping that the man coming down the road with a zip tattooed on his forehead is not heading to my gate ...

Robert Nemeth on Littlehampton’s East Beach Cafe

M
uch has been written in the national press about Littlehampton’s East Beach Café. It was completed in 2007 to the designs of Thomas Heatherwick (of Olympic cauldron and London bus fame) and features rusted steel as the principle material. Lots could be said, and has been, about both the building and its food. Bearing in mind Brighton & Hove’s inability to get anything of note built, I’m more interested in the battle that was fought by its creator, Jane Wood. The story starts with Jane buying at auction a seafront flat in Littlehampton. She then acquired the chippy kiosk in front to stop it from being turned into something awful. Her saviour was a Concessions Officer at Arun District Council, Mary Campling, who bought into Jane’s dream of bringing world-class architecture to the town. Through Mrs Campling’s interventions, the council saw fit to do whatever was necessary to make it happen and granted a long lease with a nominal rent. Although Jane speaks for England about her dealings with various councils in trying to get various projects moving, it is the case that she built the West Beach Café in 2008, the World’s Longest Bench in 2010 and the Stage by the Sea in 2014 by architects Asif Khan, Studio Weave and Flanagan Lawrence respectively. These buildings have worked wonders for Littlehampton. If such structures are to be built, it has to be borne in mind that the businesses within them (cafes, museums, etc) are not particularly more profitable than if they had been built within drab seaside sheds. It is the rest of a town that ultimately benefits. That is why councils should be bending over backwards to attract people like Jane. his week we shot our tenth episode of Latest Homes Live. Reaching double figures felt like a bit of a landmark really, so we reflected on the past 10 shows and thought about what knowledge we have picked up from our time on the series so far. Andrew: Although I have worked on a property show in the past, Simone and I were both newbies to Brighton. I guess that I can safely say I am much more clued up on Brighton, Hove, Worthing and the surrounding towns and villages, from a real estate angle. Put it this way: I no longer have to programme my Sat Nav whenever I want to drive from the production office to the TV studio! And when we arrange a shoot in Hove, I know not to head towards Seaford. What’s really amazing is how much I have learnt from our weekly ‘House Call’ feature. Because of the questions that are posed to our studio guests each week, I now know a lot more about what to expect as a tenant, and what to preempt when I eventually decide to buy. If you’ve never caught this part of the show, we cover it all! From difficult landlords to untidy tenants, to iron burns in the carpet, to ancient wells on boundary lines. Our team will answer anything you want – as long as it’s got something to do with the world of property. So don’t write in for advice about your love life (although we did once help out a lady who was concerned about the implications of leaving her boyfriend, and what it would mean for their jointly-owned house).
I’ve learnt so much about the process of buying as well. As a 30-year-old, it’s been valuable information to me. I barely understood the term ‘stamp duty’ previously. I thought it was something to do with postage! Most enlightening to me has been investigating how newly built homes incorporate fantastic technology and eco-systems. These houses have often been in the high-end price bracket, but when you get down to the nittygritty, they save in the long run. This is a major plus when investing in these kinds of properties; from solar panelling to water recycling systems,

modern homes are enticing me more than any other. Having said that, seeing how some designers have taken period houses and developed them internally into a contemporary living space, all the while retaining vintage flair, is a trend that I am also enjoying. Guilty pleasure of the last ten episodes: ‘Exceptional Haunted Homes’. That pesky ghost stamping around in the maid's quarters of Preston Manor gave me the chills. Simone: Hands down, what I have enjoyed the most presenting the first 10 Latest Homes Live episodes is learning about the different types of building – old, new, vintage, contemporary. I enjoy history so much, and Brighton is steeped in it. Whilst Andrew admires the new builds, I like to browse the catalogues of Victorian, Edwardian and Gothic buildings that line this beautiful city. There’s even the buildings from the 1960s – all unique and intriguing in their own special way. The boundary between Brighton and Hove is a great demonstration of this variant of architecture in the city. We’ve been lucky enough to be granted access to period townhouses and regency squares, rooftop terraces and ancient manor houses. This city has everything, from Norman structures to cubist buildings to the Pavilion and the bandstand on the pier. Obviously the churches, listed manors and town halls of the area are striking and unique, but the wonderful thing about this city is the variety of actual homes that represent all the shapes and sizes of architecture. I’d love to actually live in a property that comes with its own tale to tell. My guilty pleasure was visiting the Swedishthemed ‘Exceptional Home’, where the lady of the house let me try on one of her stunning dresses. Better than Andrew’s run-in with a ghost, in my opinion!
