roperty specialist Leaders raised more than £30,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support during 2014. The firm was delighted to exceed its target of £25,000, raising a total of £31,200 to help ensure that no one faces cancer alone in the UK. Over the year, staff from Leaders’ 85 branches across the UK have run, cycled, baked, dressed up, been ice-bucketed, gone sober and more, to raise money for their charity partner Macmillan. The firm also auctioned off a special selection of children’s artwork as part of its annual drawing competition and organised more than 60 coffee mornings across the country as part of Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. Leaders’ Managing Director, Paul Weller, said: “We are delighted to have raised this sum of money for such an excellent charity. The work Macmillan does in supporting people living with cancer and their families is remarkable. Thank you to all our staff, our clients, business associates and the general public who have supported our fundraising so generously.”

The future’s black and beardy …

M

uch as I hate to end one year and start another on a black note, there were many things about 2014 that really annoyed me. Since when did we turn our backs and allow the UK – well, the South East at least – to become so homogenised? December last year brought the sad new that Madame Jojo’s in London had had their license revoked, thus thrusting the final nail in the coffin of lovely Soho, which used to be a place where anything could – and generally did – happen. I should know; I spent most of my teenage years and early twenties there proving the pudding. I even used to have a nightclub there in the nineties ... sold off to accommodate Cross Rail, a train line which will no doubt hurtle more bland people with greater efficiency from the suburbs to their highearning jobs in the city. I’m afraid that New York, always ahead of the UK in the style stakes, has suffered a similar fate. My native New Yorker friends regularly bemoan the fact that their once edgy city has now changed beyond recognition, giving way to beige, paunchy homogenisation. When I was visiting last, my friends painstakingly took me to all the remaining ‘old school’ venues they could still find among the chain stores and pretentious bling. I was increasingly irritated by the rash of New Yorkers crowding the pavements, restaurants and – somewhat bizarrely – department stores, with nasty little ‘toy dogs’ they treat like hairy children. Back in the UK, we adopted ‘Black Friday’ for the first time last year. Whatever next? Thanksgiving turkey, anyone?! Independence Day perhaps? But the trend that really got my goat(ee) last year was the ‘beard and tattoo’ look prevalent all over Brighton. A word to the wise guys – not one of my female friends, either old or young, fancies guys with beards. Similarly, women these days often seem to favour the ‘boiled egg with painted on eyebrows’ look, which, although keeping beauty salons in business, is yet another pallbearer to the coffin of originality. If we carry on, the entire future will be black. Let alone Friday. Happy New Year, everyone!

Thanksgiving turkey, anyone?!

walk up Whitehawk Hill Road behind the Royal Sussex County Hospital quickly reveals unbeatable views across the city. The Palace Pier can suddenly be seen above the roofs of the seafront buildings below, and then Marine Gate, the Marina and so on. Best of all are the views towards the east from Whitehawk Hill itself, said to be the best place in the city to watch low winter sunsets. Although the area is by no means quiet, it is hardly on the beaten track. Many residents of Brighton & Hove have never heard of the Craven Vale allotments at the top of the hill and fewer have explored them, which is a real shame as they are quite magical – but sadly under threat as a site for housing. The Craven Vale allotments consist of around 140 individual plots. Their status as statutory allotments (which means that development can only take place with the Secretary of State’s permission), and their location beside both common land and the Whitehawk Hill Camp scheduled ancient monument, do make development tricky. Nevertheless, a council-commissioned urban fringe study has identified the site as suitable for housing. I am fully won over by the arguments of campaigners, including site representative and sheep lookerer Jane Hawkins, who strongly makes the case for the benefit of allotments generally and the unsuitability of this site for housing. I would add that we should be very wary indeed of allowing any green spaces locally to be built on. If we have to build then let’s go tall elsewhere. I enjoyed my visit immensely and was fascinated to see Whitehawk Hill transmitting station, which opened in 1959 on the site of a World War II radar station, so close. IT’S ELF TIME Austin Rees sponsors ‘Elf on the Twelfth’ in aid of Rockinghorse to bring festive cheer and fun to the hospital over Christmas

ustin Rees were, again, proud to be supporting Elf on the Twelfth – a fundraising day organised by local children’s charity Rockinghorse. As last year, this day was embraced by all of our staff, friends and contractors. All our willing staff dressed as elves on this fun day and we were privileged enough to be invited up to the hospital again. A group of our elves visited the Royal Alexander Hospital and Trevor Mann Baby Unit on Friday afternoon. We spent time with the children at their Christmas party, joining in the fun and games. After the party, a group of our elves visited the poorly children in the hospital wards who had been unable to make the Christmas party. Unfortunately there were some children we could not visit, but for those we were able to spend time with, we gave presents and sat and spoke with them and their parents. We were all excited at being given the opportunity to help these children and we would like to thank Ryan Heal and Analiese Doctrove for helping to make this happen. We would like to say how humbled we were by the strength of the

children and were pleased that we were able to bring a smile to their faces when we arrived. The nurses, always so very patient, took time to introduce us to the children – to this point, we would like to say how wonderful the nurses are. They are truly angels in uniform. A lot of the presents had been purchased particularly for this day but we would like to mention a very dear client, Gwen Stapleton MBE, who spent hours creating knitted teddy bears which she kindly donated to us, in addition to a Nativity Set. Gwen is a 94 year old lady, very much involved in her own charity work. You can experience some of our day on Latest Live, which captures a small window of the day we spent. ith Christmas fast approaching and winter setting in, it seems appropriate to focus on a building element that stands above the rest – often out of sight and out of mind – but this time of year a staple in European folklore for the legendary big bellied fella with a long beard and red clothes; jolly old Saint Nick (also known as Santa Claus). A chimney (or middle English ‘chimenee’) is of course a structure, often constructed from bricks and mortar, containing a vertical flue leading from the throat of the fireplace to project from the roof, carried above the ridgeline of the building within a stack, designed to carry smoke to the outside atmosphere. Cowls are traditionally fitted to chimney pots located on top of the chimney stack to increase the draught and prevent wind and rainwater entering into the building. Pots are held in position by a sloped mortar fillet known as flaunching; this also directs surface rainwater away. Flashings, often flexible lead material, are typically installed where the chimney passes through the roof coverings and are intended to eliminate rainwater from the roof void. The stack is named after the vertically stacked bricks (or sometimes stone) bound together by mortar. Chimneys have been an important part of buildings for centuries. However, before the 12th century, the main fire set was said to be positioned within the centre of the property. Notoriously inefficient and dangerous, smoke would escape through a purpose made gap in the roof covering, although most enclosed dwellings stayed full of smoke. Cheaper ineffective chimneys were later created from timber, waddle and daub, however these remained susceptible to spread of fire. The evolution of chimneys has evolved significantly in modern years. Nowadays, buildings are designed without the necessity for chimneys due to sustainable heating systems. Refurbished buildings are seeing chimney stacks being demolished or capped off with the chimney breasts removed for extra floor space (always seek local authority approval). Alternatively, some refurbishment properties are utilising the existing flues, which are retrospectively lined and a contemporary wood burning stove installed. Chimneys are stacked up in many different shapes and sizes and all serve the same function if maintained correctly.
