drian Hole has been appointed Manager of the Lewes Road branch of estate agents Cubitt & West. Adrian, who has worked in the Sussex property industry with Cubitt & West for some eight years, most recently in Worthing, is delighted at his new appointment. “Brighton must have the most vibrant property market in the country outside London, which makes it particularly exciting to be involved in,” he says. “There has hardly been any slowing down in

the run-up to Christmas, and with the changes to Stamp Duty announced by the Chancellor in his Autumn Statement, it looks very much as though 2015 is going to be even livelier!” With such an exciting prospect in view, Adrian considers himself fortunate to be supported by a really top team. “Here at Lewes Road, I’ve inherited a fantastic mix of youth and experience,” he says. Since moving from Turkey in the 1990s he’s made it his mission to introduce the UK to the aesthetic and practical pleasures of natural stone. And judging by the success of his business, he’s well on his way to succeeding! Reis is the Managing Director and owner of Stone Republic, a natural stone import and wholesale business based in Ansty, near Haywards Heath. Stone Republic imports quality marble, granite, limestone and travertine from all corners of the world.

From ‘the land of stone’ to Brighton When Reis first moved to Brighton he worked in property renovation. “In the beginning I worked a lot with wood and loved it,” he recalls.

“But then I started working with stone and just thought – wow! I loved it because it reminded me of home. Turkey is a land of stone – you’re always walking on it, you’re always next to it; it’s part of your life.” Mentor studies As one of the biggest global sources of stone (including 40% of the world’s marble), Turkey was the perfect place to learn about the natural stone industry. And learn he did. Reis returned home and found a mentor with decades of industry experience. “He gave me a lot of guidance,” remembers Reis. “He knew everyone in Turkey, and – most importantly – he knew stone. “I listened to him carefully, we went to

exhibitions, and I studied and studied. It took me three years until I felt I had enough knowledge to start out on my own.” The birth of Stone Republic In 2003, and now back in the UK, Reis had the idea of setting up Stone Republic. He then spent night and day researching it. “I looked at everything – colours, varieties, geology. I went to more exhibitions, touched more stone and learnt everything I could. I visited the factories, and quarries and mountains throughout Turkey, Italy and around the world.” Passion “I think natural stone is a bit like wine,” says Reis. “If you love your wine, you’re always looking and tasting and learning – you can’t get enough of it. It’s the same with me and stone! But it’s not only me,” he smiles. “Lots of people, when they get close to stone for the first time, they start loving it too. Because you have to, it’s so beautiful. “Just imagine: you’re working with a millionyear-old piece of rock. Granite, for example, is almost as old as the planet itself. And you can have that piece in your home, in your kitchen, in your office, and touch it every day. It’s wonderful!” The correct stone for the job Finding the correct materials for individual projects takes time and effort. “People often call me and say: ‘Reis, I want to buy product X.

If you love your wine, you’re always looking and tasting and learning – you can’t get enough. It’s the same with me and stone! Company Y are doing it for this much money. Can you get it for me for a better price?’ But I say, ‘That’s not the right question! First of all I need to understand your project. What are you trying to do? What effect do you want to achieve?’” He says that customers can find this frustrating at first, “because they just want to get on and find the best deal for the material they think they want. But I will only ever sell the correct natural stone for the job.” Reis insists that his honesty with service and prices is not intended as a way of earning trust and repeat business. “No, it’s just me,” says Reis. “I need to be honest with myself in each and every deal.
