ountrywide Residential Lettings, the UK’s largest lettings agency, scooped the gold award in three top categories – ‘Large Lettings Agency of the Year’, ‘Employer of the Year’ and ‘Property Management Company of the Year’, at The Negotiator Awards 2014. The agency was also delighted to receive the silver award for ‘Innovator of the Year’. Countrywide Residential Lettings, of which King and Chasemore is a part, fought off strong competition from over 360 entries to win the awards at the gala ceremony. Commenting on the success, Martine McIntyre, Branch Manager of King and Chasemore on Church Road in Hove, said; “We are delighted to scoop these top awards. This is the fourth year that Countrywide Residential Lettings has been named ‘Large Lettings Agency of the Year’ since 2009, which shows our continued and dedicated commitment to the industry and to our customers.” The Negotiator Awards 2014 was attended by over 700 guests and was presented by actor and comedian Alexander Armstrong. A silent auction was also held, with proceeds going to the national charity Crisis, which is dedicated to helping eliminate the causes of homelessness. ulie Frith is delighted to have been inaugurated as the new president of the Brighton & Hove Estate Agents Association for 2015, and regards it as one of the highlights of her 25 year career in property. “I have some wonderful predecessors to follow,” says Julie, “and it will be an honour to follow in their footsteps.” The Brighton & Hove Estate Agents Association was formed in 1886, and membership is seen as setting a benchmark for good standards in customer service, business practice and professional credibility. Julie is managing partner of Mishon Mackay New Homes, a brand based upon customer service, so Julie is well placed to publicise the standards of the BHEAA. However, one of Julie’s first duties is to organize the annual dinner for the Association, the highlight of the city’s property calendar. “I take this extremely seriously,” says Julie.“The property industry in Brighton and Hove is one of the most exciting in the country, and employs exceptional people, no matter what area their expertise. Naturally we have a healthy rivalry and competitive spirit which drives us, and, like any industry which employs passionate people, we are proud to have that rivalry. However, the Association’s annual dinner is a party night to celebrate our industry, a night when we put our rivalries aside – just for one night of course – and enjoy each other’s company, swap tales and forge new friendships. I am going to guarantee we all have a fantastic time!”

The post requires knowledge of the range of issues relating to current Government policy on economic development and local economy. A proven track record in dealing with both public and private sectors is essential. Minimum three years experience of leading major initiatives and programmes [not necessarily in economic development] on time, to budget and in a collaborative partnership setting. Scheming seagulls and leaky ceilings...
D
uring the recent stormy weather, my bedroom has been suffering from an unwelcome spate of golden showers ... and not of the variety that certain people might be happy to pay for in the bedroom. A blocked downpipe is the culprit, and, every time it rains (which would seem to be every night), filthy yellow water pours through my bedroom light fitting. The first time it happened, The Boyfriend and I were enjoying a cup of tea in bed, which we regrettably had to leave to go cold while I got out onto the roof in my night clothes and no shoes in the pouring rain in order to shove a stick down the blocked hole. Meanwhile, The Boyfriend bailed out the overflowing gutter with a milk pan. I spent the rest of the day trying to unblock the downpipe with various corrosives and drain rods and hoped for the best. I believe that the blockage has been caused by the seagulls that nest behind my chimney. The winged miscreants have spent all summer dropping bones, sticks, pebbles and shells into my gutter, causing a blockage that it appears nothing short of dynamite will shift. The blockage, invisible as well as immovable, is the Scarlet Pimpernel of all blockages. I am sure that a tool exists which is perfect to chase out the blockage, but I haven’t found it yet as I’ve mainly been at work during daylight hours (when fortunately, it hasn’t been raining). My past four nights have been spent being woken up at precisely 3.48am by the sound of my bedroom water feature cranking into action, then being kept awake by the noisy torrent of water pouring through my ceiling and the hourly emptying of the vessel into which the water is falling. Fortunately, I’ve always been a ‘glass half full’ (or in this case, ‘downpipe half empty’) kind of person, so have been counting my blessings that at least the water comes out in one convenient place, albeit rather perilously through the light fitting. Tonight though, the storm to end all storms is forecast, so I’ve de-camped to the Small Daughter’s bedroom and left a large toy box under the light fitting, which should be good for at least 10 litres of rain water. My main fear is that my sodden ceiling might fall in. I know I’m very lucky to have a roof over my head, but I don’t want one all over my head in the middle of the night …

883 saw Sir Thomas Graham Jackson appointed to design a structure at Brighton College that would become the school’s most recognisable element. Facing Eastern Road, Jackson’s huge red-brick edifice is what greets visitors and the public. But a lack of funds led to the omission of a key element of Jackson’s design. The Cairns Tower opened in December to complete what was started by Jackson 130 years ago. It takes its name from the school’s current Head. A stubby gatehouse, consisting of a pair of arched entranceways with the Head Master’s office above, has been doubled in height to become a glorious tower. Two floors, including an entertaining space and huge office, have been added. A cupola at the top can now be seen from far into the distance (and is particularly attractive from Whitehawk Hill at sunset). An original design by Sir Thomas, a former Brighton College student who designed a number of Oxford colleges, provided inspiration for the tower, but Richard Griffiths Architects were employed to reinterpret the scheme. The results are incredible. As per the rest of the building around it, brick has been used on the tower’s southern elevation and flint on the northern. There are terracotta dressings throughout. Its windows are bronze, its cupola is lead, and its pelican weathervane is copper. Such work is not cheap and justifying it is an interesting exercise. My view is that architecture has meaning. The tower isn’t about two new rooms. There is a strong message behind it, waiting to be interpreted by anybody who cares to think. To me, it is about finishing what you set out to achieve, however much time it takes.
