MORTGAGE ENQUIRIES JUMP MORE THAN 50 PERCENT SINCE ELECTION, REPORTS DEVERE

T

here has been a “noticeable surge in serious home loan enquiries” since the election, reports deVere Mortgages. The observation from deVere Mortgages, part of deVere United Kingdom, which offers advice to British expats and to foreign nationals looking to buy property in the UK, comes a week after David Cameron returned as Prime Minister following the Conservative’s surprise majority. deVere’s Head of UK Financial Planning, Kevin White, affirms: “Since the election outcome was announced our mortgage consultants have reported a noticeable surge in serious home loan enquiries.

“Demand for mortgages has been strong all year, but the volume of enquiries has increased by more than 50 per cent over the last seven days, compared to the previous week. “The majority of these enquiries were from overseas buyers and British expats who want to purchase a UK property but who had been, for various reasons, waiting to see the outcome of the election before pursuing.” Tom Elliott, International Investment Strategist at deVere Group, comments: “It is to be expected that there was a significant uptick in mortgage enquiries in light of the Conservative win. It appears that investors held off in fear of a left

wing government taking power. “The UK property market should benefit from David Cameron’s government. “There will be no Mansion Tax, and indeed property will be slightly less taxed if the Conservatives carry out their promise to exclude property under a certain value from inheritance tax. “More generally, the election result has confirmed that Britain remain a pro-business, pro-

property owning country backed up by a robust legal framework. The statist alternative, proposed by the Labour party, that would have led to more government intervention in the economy has been revealed to have little popular support. “Additionally, the non-dom tax status will continue to be available to wealthy foreigners, even if it is further modified. Poma was also responsible for constructing the 32 ‘capsules’ on the London Eye.

The engineer and project manager for the i360 is Jacobs, who was also the London Eye’s principal engineers. Jacobs is one of the world’s leading professional firms in engineering and construction, employing more than 70,000 staff in 15 countries. The team working on the i360 is led by Dr John Roberts and is based in Manchester.

The i360’s civil engineering contractor is Sussex-based Mackley. Founded in 1927 Mackley are recognised as a leader in coastal and fluvial civil engineering producing innovative, sustainable solutions and safe working conditions in close cooperation with clients. Previous projects in Brighton have included construction of the storm overflow sewer on Brighton Beach; reconstruction of the Brighton beach colonnades and carousel; coastal maintenance from Shoreham Harbour to Rottingdean; strengthening works for Brighton Pier; and strengthening works for the West Pier (prior to the fire).

In the UK Hollandia were responsible for the steel structures for the London Eye, SwissRe building St May Axe, and Wembley Stadium.

Hemsley Orrell Partnership (HOP) assists Jacobs as designated project managers , temporary and some permanent works design. Based in Hove, HOP is a multidisciplinary Practice of Consulting Civil and Structural Engineers with a particular specialism in coastal projects. Local projects have included underwater repairs to Brighton Pier; Brighton Marina; the redevelopment, restoration and extension of the British Engineerium and the design of the AMEX Community Stadium.

A

s ‘academic as a school of whales’ and ‘as organised as a string of sausages’, the Punch and Judy College of Professors promotes and represents performers of the ancient show across the country. The first record of Punch and Judy in Brighton is from around 1940 and essentially consists of a complaint from a performer that the show had died out here, perhaps following Queen Victoria’s withdrawal of patronage of the resort. However, the railway opened the following year and the show reached unprecedented levels of popularity over the following decades. Our local ‘Professor’ is Glyn Edwards who has run exhibitions and shows in and around Brighton Fishing Museum since 2011. Prior to a gap since 2000 when Mike ‘Sgt.’ Stone was banished from the beach, Punch and Judy has been performed on the fishing beach since Victorian times. Other shows existed near the Aquarium, by the West Pier and on Hove Lawns. Punch and Judy is much older than this though. Its first reference was in 1662 by Samuel Pepys – 353 years ago. Even the Victorians thought of Punch and Judy as old. The opening of Brighton Fishing Museum in 1992 is without doubt one of the tourism success stories of modern Brighton. Indeed, the contribution of its creator and custodian, Andy Durr, was recently marked by the unveiling of a brass plaque following his death last year. I recall the western portion of the Fishing Museum as storage. The arch’s mezzanine floor was revamped in the mid-1990s but was made accessible by resident carpenter Alex Briault in the mid-2000s with the addition of a staircase and gallery. Indoor Punch and Judy shows take place upstairs, above exhibitions on the West Pier and Brighton Swimming Club. See the show on Sundays, along with Thursdays and Fridays over the summer.
