West Pier Trust
A
seafront attraction – which will be the world’s tallest moving observation tower – the restoration work on the eastern toll booth has begun. A team of experts from Swan Foundry are currently shot blasting sections of the old ticket booth to strip it back to bare metal. The technique involves sections of the booth being put inside a shot blaster, where they are rotated while being bombarded by steel shots of various sizes for around five minutes. A replica of the western toll booth will also be added to the site. Rachel Clark, the West Pier
BRIGHTON AND HOVE RADIO AWARDED SMALL SCALE DAB TRIAL LICENCE fcom have recently announced that around 60 stations will begin broadcasting on digital radio for the first time using 'small scale DAB' which includes Brighton & Hove Radio covering Brighton and Hove. The trial licence application includes Juice107.2, Radio Reverb, Smile Sussex, totallyradio, Resonance and Brighton City Student Radio. The trials, a further step in the development of this new technology, are designed to test how it operates and understand how smaller radio stations could work together. If the trials are successful, UK listeners could benefit from hundreds more local and community radio stations on digital radio in the future. Currently, the cost of broadcasting on DAB is beyond the reach of many small radio stations. This new approach, pioneered in Brighton by Ofcom engineer Rashid Mustapha, means that small scale radio stations could start broadcasting on DAB radio for a fraction of current costs. The stations are expected to begin broadcasting on DAB digital radio from the summer for a period of nine months. Each successful applicant now has 12 weeks to launch their multiplex. Ofcom will then work with Government to decide on the next steps for the new approach to radio broadcasting. Brighton & Hove Radio’s Chairman, Daniel Nathan says, “It’s very exciting that the technology we developed and tested here in Brighton in 2012 is set to become a cost effective option for radio broadcasters across the board. Most significantly, it has the potential to open radio to new ideas and be a truer reflection of the UK’s diverse communities in 2015.” Latest Homes looks forward to this new development in radio broadcasting. Trust’s chief executive, was among those pleased at the restoration and looking forward to the booths’ return to Brighton beach. She said: “The West Pier Trust is delighted that a key element of the i360 scheme will be the reinstatement of the pier’s toll booths in their original positions. “These iconic buildings adorned the entrance of the pier when it opened in 1866 and, expertly restored and replicated, will similarly greet the public when visiting the i360. “We’re thrilled that for the first time in 30 years both of Eugenius Birch’s splendid buildings will be back where they belong and mark the entrance to Brighton’s newest and most exciting attraction.” David Marks, the architect who designed the i360, said it was always the intention to embrace the area’s heritage at the same time as providing the city with a modern attraction. He said: “Our vision for the Brighton i360 – a vertical pier – is to follow in the spirit of the original pier, inviting visitors to ‘walk on air’ and gain a new perspective of the city, just as they ‘walked on water’ in the past and
viewed the city from the sea. "I am delighted that we are able to reuse parts of the Victorian cast iron supporting structure and restore parts of the original pier to their former glory, setting the historic alongside the futuristic, to create an exciting new architectural and tourist destination." The i360 is also contributing annual funds to the West Pier Trust – an arrangement which will be invaluable for the charity to achieve its objectives which include promoting the pier’s history and keeping alive its memory. Eleanor Harris, chief executive at the i360, was similarly excited by the returning two booths. She said: "These beautiful buildings will be publicly accessible and become our ticket office and heritage tea rooms; with a perfect vantage point to enjoy views of the West Pier 'sea island' – Sussex's most photographed structure.” The toll booths will be re-built on Brighton Seafront in spring 2016 at the same time as the Brighton i360 is completed. www.brightoni360.co.uk

much-loved piece of Brighton’s historic West Pier, a pair of toll booths designed by Eugenius Birch in Italianate style, which originally stood at the entrance to the pier, is being restored ready for a return to the seafront by the Brighton i360 team. One of the booths later became the well-known Rock Shop, which closed in 2009 after becoming structurally unsound. It was subsequently placed in storage after being carefully dismantled in 2012 with a plan for it to be restored and returned to the site as part of the i360 development. And with only 12 months until the anticipated opening of the

GOING UP, UP, UP News from the Brighton i360 site
T
he Brighton i360 tower came 'out of the ground' last week as the first three cans of 17 were successfully lifted into place, the chassis for the glass pod was installed and the fourth, being added later today, bringing the tower to just over 28 metres high already. Said Eleanor Harris, chief executive of Brighton i360, "It is exciting to see the i360 taking shape so quickly. All the planning has paid off and the team are making great progress and we are already ahead of schedule and on track to complete the tower by September." Last week saw the arrival of the first six giant steel cans, which will eventually form the i360’s 162-metre tower, and the three sections of the jacking frame, which will make the construction possible. They arrived by barge last Thursday and Friday before being lifted onto the site earlier this week. The first can, weighing in at around 80 tonnes, was lifted over the public footpath which dissects the construction site at around 9.30am on Monday. The team of expert engineers gently lowered the can into place and fixed it to the existing floor fittings in the attraction’s concrete foundations. The anchor bolt frame, which is cased in 4,500 tonnes of concrete, is fixed to the first can by 72 holding down bolts. Once finished, the tower will be held together by a total of 1,336 bolts of varying sizes. The second can was then manoeuvred into place and fixed to the top of the first one, ahead of schedule, before the pod chassis was lifted onto site and lowered over both fixed cans.The distinctive red pod chassis is what the glass viewing pod will be fitted to once the tower is finished. When completed, the viewing pod will be around 18 metres in diameter and be able to carry up to 200 people. It will weigh 93 tonnes, including the 20 tonne chassis already in place, and be able to carry a passenger load of up to 15 tonnes. Work is currently running ahead of schedule and timings are subject to change, but the next pair of cans are due to be fitted today and the

recall the meeting well. An obscure suggestion to build a sleek viewing tower on the Brighton seafront was unveiled by David Marks in a seafront hotel near the West Pier. The reaction was surprisingly positive. That was in 2006. There were certainly times over the ensuing years when I feared that the i360 would never go ahead. Even when photos were produced of huge pieces of steel, in a Dutch warehouse apparently, I was still a little sceptical. With the arrival of the tug ‘Dutch Pioneer’, loaded with the first six tower sections (‘cans’), there is no doubt whatsoever that this project is happening. The i360 consists of seventeen cans; the rest of which will be arriving shortly. Logically, one would assume that the tower will be built from the bottom up. The top is actually being constructed first and then lifted so that successive cans can be slotted in below. This is presumably because it is tricky to lift the top pieces into place by crane. The cans are surprisingly slender – each is 3.9m in width. Taking into account the aluminium cladding and a total height of 162m, the i360’s height:width ratio is 40:1. To put this into perspective, the most slender skyscraper in the world is Hong Kong’s Highcliff at 20:1. Although I have often worried that the i360 wouldn’t go ahead, I have always supported the idea. As time goes by, I like it even more and am keen to see how it looks from various key vistas around the city. Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji springs to mind (as does Ed and Emily Hepburne Scott’s 36 Views of Sussex Heights). I know that I will be able to see it fairly unobstructed from my lounge and am very much looking forward to the idea.
