O

ne of the things I love about this city is the creative buzz. From the number of freelance digital, media and creative people you meet to the independent shops in the Lanes and seafront, and the vibrant graffiti on the walls. When we open we hope the i360 will become a creative hub: a place where you can see great performances during Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe or hear up and coming artists perform either in the glass pod with sound system or below in our beach building. So when local legend, graffiti artist Aroe approached us to paint our hoardings and brighten up some otherwise grey boards, this seemed the perfect way to tap into this creativity before we even open. Our first collaboration with Aroe was last autumn when he along with fellow local graffiti artists Rebus, Gary and Radios painted some of our boards, but this time the project was even more ambitious. We gave over a 100 metre stretch of our hoardings and on Sunday 9th August, 14 talented artists brought together by local graffiti artist Aroe 'wrote' on the boards. The same group returned again this time joined by other equally talented local artists including Jiroe, Vodka, Morf, Warg, Ster and Past, as well as Yes B from Essex, Rench from Reading, Nottingham’s Alert and Europeans Twesh (Italy) and Relay (Germany) who both now live in the UK. We gave them a blank slate with no direction about what to paint, and the results are truly stunning. It was a beautiful, hot, sunny day and so the event drew lots of crowds. What was fascinating to see was their artistic method. They don't use stencils or guides; it is all freehand and it is created in the moment. Many didn't know what they would paint until they turned up so you were really watching creativity in action. Alert said Brighton was great at welcoming graffiti artists and he was very positive about participating: "It's good for the public to get firsthand experience of graffiti. To see how it's crafted and how each individual artist approaches their piece" My personal favourites are Aroe's gorillas piece, Morf's seagull and Rebus' donut hotel. lans for marshland to the east of Shoreham Harbour were set in motion by Hove Council in 1929 and completed the following year with £15,665-3-6d budgeted for the project. Hove Lagoon was the result. Like the King Alfred (or ‘Hove Marina’ as it was called upon its completion in 1939), the Lagoon was put to use by the military soon after its construction during the Second World War. What is now the Big Beach Cafe, run by local resident Danny Stockland, became the Lagoon Canteen and served members of the Armed Forces from 9:30am to 10pm. The café looked different at that time. Its principal feature was a bright colonnade, now missing, that ran across the front of the building. It’s interesting to think that the café site was, in the not too distant past, in the middle of a river. The Adur once ran parallel with the coastline and discharged into the sea close to the bottom of Wish Road. Successive cuts in 1760 and 1816 created the port as we know it today and led to the old river mouth becoming marshy. The Big Beach Café was in the news in July when its owner, Norman Cook, paid £20,000 towards a new pirate ship in the children’s playground following the closure of the Lagoon’s largest piece of play equipment last year. Bearing in mind how much has been spent in Brighton in recent years on the Level, Seven Dials, New Road, Queen’s Road, Lewes Road, Edward Street and seafront arches, it seems terribly unfair that there is little cash left for Hove. Looking to the future, I’ll be strongly pushing for cash to be spent on refurbishing the Lagoon generally – but also on a scheme within the Western Lawns to properly connect the Lagoon to the new King Alfred. www.buildingopinions.com

OLYMPIC MEDALLIST HELPS MILLER HOMES PICK A WINNING TEAM

M

iller Homes Southern has unveiled the judges for its Summer of Sport competition, which gives local clubs the chance to win prizes of up to £1,000. Olympic medalist Pete Waterfield will be helping Miller Homes choose a sports club in the South to receive the prize money. The competition, which runs until 31 August, is now in its fourth year and has already attracted a high number of entries from across the region. To take part, entrants should pick up an entry form from their nearest Miller Homes development or download a form at www.millerhomes.co.uk then tell the judges, in under 200 words, how their club will benefit from the money and what it will be spent on. Pete, who lives in Southampton and is part of the Southampton Diving Club, took up diving at the age of 9 and went on to win Silver

in the 2004 Athens Olympics, as well as other medals from a host of tournaments around the world. Tracey Lee, area sales and marketing director at Miller Homes, said she’s delighted that Pete would be judging the Summer of Sport competition. “Pete is a world-class diver and he is passionate about his sport,” he said. “He knows that local sports clubs play an important role in nurturing talent in the community and helping people to become more active. With this background, he is ideally placed to identify the clubs that will make the most of the prize money. “As part of the judging process he will look at how clubs will make use of the cash, whether it be taking athletes to competitions or investing in training and equipment.” Meanwhile, Pete said that he was pleased to support this year’s competition.

altdean Lido, is the country’s only Grade II* listed lido and one of only 3 seaside lidos still in use. Built by R W H Jones in 1938, architecturally, the building is arguably the UK’s best remaining example of a modernist lido and is situated here in Brighton, right on our doorstep. Just this month it featured in Historic England’s top UK 7 seaside wonders embracing structures that sum up the English seaside experience. and leisure facilities. Subject to funding the site will be ready to open late 2017.

the external works with this phase one of the project underway. The building project commenced in April 2015 and will be complete during Spring 2016. The new plant room has already been finished which has seen over 1000 tonnes of soil removed from the grounds and 105m3 of ready mix concrete used. The swimming pool has now been drained and works begin this month on recreating the pool back into a full 40m length heated outdoor pool. The pool and temporary outdoor changing facilities are scheduled to open for Summer 2016. The CIC are now calling for expressions of interest for phase 2 of the project which will see the main building fully refurbished as part of a total refurbishment programme of £10million. The newly restored lido building is anticipated to become an all-year-round destination with ice-skating replacing the pool during the winter months, a regular events programme, a café/restaurant

community and visitor hub. The site has so many elements to it and is far more than just a swimming pool. Latest Homes met with Tony and Katherine Adams who revealed the company which made their home complete: “We found a local company who came up with the perfect solution to achieve our perfect grown up family home.” When they bought their house in Lewes, Tony and Katherine knew they wanted a longterm family home. Selling their property in Brighton so that they could be in the right position at the right time as buyers, they started searching for their perfect family home. Originally built in 1927, the house they found hadn’t been modernised for years. They moved into rented accommodation whilst the majority of the essential works were carried out.

Tony and Katherine and their two young children, like most families, were on a strict budget, and thought they wouldn’t be able to do any extensive building work for some time. But when the opportunity arose - through a legacy left by Tony’s mother - they decided that they would enlist expert help to extend the house to enable them to enjoy more family space on the ground floor.

We found a local company who came up with the perfect solution to achieve our ideal grown up family home But who to choose? As it happens, the couple know Nick and Louise Andrews, who discovered DMB Solutions in Latest Homes magazine and were themselves featured in October 2013. On the strength of this personal recommendation Tony and Katherine called DMB, and when a member of the DMB design

team came to visit for an initial consultation, the couple explained that what they wanted was to have an extension which would take in the view of the garden whilst also providing better access to it. DMB came up with the perfect solution, so that the appearance of the rear elevation would appear seamless and an addition would give perfect symmetry to the ground floor. DMB suggested a pitched roof to the front which followed the line of the main roof, whilst matching the tiles using renovated roof tiles, giving the right proportional height to the extension. DMB Solutions offer a fixed price quote for works which include planning and building regulation applications, and in this case Tony and Katherine were allowed to develop under Permitted Development Rights, which doesn’t require formal planning consent. Although they did consult with their neighbours over the design. Tony and Katherine told Latest Homes “We are thrilled with the workmanship that DMB Solutions carried out, in particular the attention to detail matching in the picture rail and the window reveals, and the thoughtfulness and care that was delivered during the build. The diligent team screened off parts of the living area to prevent dust and unnecessary disturbance, and the couple were considerately kept informed of progress at every stage.
