TIME TO THINK ABOUT STEPPING ONTO THE LADDER – SAYS FOX & SONS fter indications from the Governor of the Bank of England that interest rates are likely to increase around the New Year, local estate agency Fox & Sons in Brighton is suggesting that now might be an opportune time to take out a new mortgage or to find a new deal. In a recent interview Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England, suggested that the Bank of England base rate (BBR), which is currently at an all time low of 0.5 per cent, is likely to increase at the turn of the year. The rise in interest rates is expected to “proceed slowly” over the next few years, and to peak at around 2.5 per cent – half the historical average. “With interest rates expected to rise at the start of next year, we would say that now is the ideal time to think about taking out a mortgage,” says Jack Edwards, Mortgage Services Manager at Fox

T

he tower is at full height – 162 metres high. It seems incredibly to believe that it took the team just 10 weeks to complete the construction, and it is really exciting to have reached this important milestone so quickly. It has been a flawless precision operation, which has gone without a hitch, and the engineering team have done a fantastic job. It has been fascinating to watch the construction take place – especially when the tower has been 'levitating' during the jacking operation, attracting crowds on Brighton beach. My office is based in a Portakabin on the construction site so we have literally watched the tower go up out of our window. Hollandia has already begun dismantling the square jacking tower, which was used to elevate the tower to add the cans into the bottom of the tower. As each piece of the jacking tower comes down, the slim tower beneath is revealed. The i360 is incredibly slender – in fact the slimmest tall tower ever built anywhere in the world with a height: width aspect ratio of 40:1. The final bolts were inserted by two apprentices working on the construction site at a small ceremony attended by the construction team, West Pier Trust and Brighton & Hove City Council, who held a minute’s silence to honour the families affected by the Shoreham Air Show tragedy. So what are the next stages of construction? Our focus is going to shift from the sky to the ground, as Mackley has begun building the concrete frame for the beach building. We will also start rebuilding the arches at the back of our building, which will eventually become ‘back of house’ areas inside our building for storage and our staff facilities. Meanwhile, the glass pod manufacture is well underway by Poma in France and is due to arrive in Brighton via the Channel Tunnel in October. In the UK, the West Pier toll booths are in the process of being restored and replicated and the pair will arrive on site next spring. Next year will also see the addition of the tower lighting scheme, which should be stunning and create a real beacon for the city. We will be able to change the lighting for special events – I’m told even rainbow coloured for Pride, which will be amazing! y recent tour of the Booth Museum of Natural History began with a stuffed raven being placed on the table in front of me, followed by a chough and a magpie. I was lucky enough to join a group of teenagers who had signed up for a tour as part of the council’s youth engagement programme. Our first meeting was with resident writer Mike Jackson who explained that the museum of today grew from the collection of Edward Thomas Booth who is recognised as being the first collector to display exhibits in recreations of their natural habitats – such as a flock of great black-backed gulls around a dead sheep. The museum opened in 1874 in the purpose-built structure of today in what was previously the garden of Booth’s home, Bleak House. The people of Brighton received the museum after Booth’s death in 1890 on condition that the display cases were never to be modified. Bleak House was demolished in around 1940 to make way for the Fairways and Elm Court blocks of flats. A narrow staircase, which we ascended after being shown a 140-million-year-old crocodile head, is situated behind a locked door at the rear of the building. This leads up to a vast mezzanine storage level that is full of hundreds of cabinets which are, in turn, full of tens of thousands of items. Our group was shown some of the most curious pieces by the museum’s senior keeper, John Cooper, including a drawer full of tiger skulls and a cabinet full of bees. A museum like the Booth would never be created in the modern world but, as was asked of us rhetorically on the tour, ‘where else can you see a golden eagle’? ‘Or a dead sheep with no eyes’, was one of the teenagers’ morbid response. www.buildingopinions.com
