4 ake your time. This was the advice I gave to a dear friend who, after years of living in spacious splendour has decided that the time is right to downsize. I can see why, She no longer needs the space she has and like many of us, the six flights of stairs to her lovely apartment are starting to lose their Regency charm. The problem is that along The with her spacious splendour came grand pieces of problem is furniture, great big antiques that along with and modern classics for which she has a great affection and her spacious really does not want to part splendour came with. grand pieces of I had a similar decision to furniture make when I made my last move. There were things that I loved but I knew that in my new home I simply could not accommodate them. It was heart wrenching to do this but I sold them. I took a good look around and then got in touch with a dealer who gave me a very fair price for the lot. It was sad in a way but it was a wise choice in the long run, and I have to say, the financial return on some of those much loved finds came in very handy too. Sell them I say, cash in, and anything else you want to keep put it in storage. I did just that until I was ready to move into my new home. Storage is great, it gives you time to think and make plans. It’s not as expensive as you might think either and the space it affords you is priceless. I have friends who have rented permanent storage and use it to great effect for all kinds of reasons although I do think that if something has been in storage for more than six months then it is redundant and again – sell it!

his week I was lucky enough to attend the 10th Sussex Food and Drink Awards, which were presented by Sally Gunnell OBE and hosted by BBC Sussex’s Danny Pike at a gala dinner at the Amex stadium. The awards showcased the best of Sussex food and drink: the local farmers; food and drink producers; the outlets serving local fare; and the most talented young chefs cooking with local ingredients. This year’s young chef of the year award went to Ryan Tomkinson from The Pass at South Lodge, following in the footsteps of two previous winners from the Pass including Tim Sheed and Steven

One particularly innovative aspect is that we will be turning our food waste (such as vegetable peelings which cannot be donated) into water in order to reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill. Our brasserie will be called The Belle Vue Brighton. We are located opposite Regency Square, which was originally called Belle Vue Fields in the 18th century; a popular site for travelling shows and fairs. As an English graduate, I love one story about Belle Vue Fields: A 10,000 man military encampment was established there in 1793 and was featured in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice as the location where the heroine’s sister Lydia Bennet scandalously elopes with army officer, George Wickham. Rather fittingly “Belle Vue” means beautiful view and our customers will enjoy beautiful sea views from our brasserie, and beautiful views of the Sussex countryside from our viewing pod. www.britishairwaysi360.com Twitter/Instagram: @ba_i360 Facebook: British Airways i360
Road, the underused Greenway and the interior of Bellamys College. It was a wasted opportunity though. Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum ultimately exists to ensure that the equivalent areas around Hove Station are developed well. The team of talented volunteers (including architects, planners and community leaders) is charged with preparing a Hove Station Quarter Neighbourhood I was Development Plan which should include a particularly vision for the three taken with a distinct sites masterplan idea surrounding the for the Goldstone station – essentially the Sackville Trading Retail Park Estate, the Goldstone Retail Park and the Conway Street Industrial Estate. I was particularly taken with a masterplan idea for the Goldstone Retail Park by architect David Kemp which would see it completely flattened. The centre spot of the beloved pitch of the old Goldstone Ground would serve as the centre spot of a whole new heart of Hove. Segment-shaped buildings would radiate out from a public square (or circle) with a variety of land uses. A model of the proposal has been created and is currently being displayed in David’s office window on Hove Park Villas. It is well worth looking on a map to see the areas in question. They are huge (much bigger than those around Brighton Station) but many more landowners are involved this time – an opportunity rather than a challenge. How cross-promotion can help attract more visitors – Samantha Harman investigates How would you make our city even greater? From a tourism point of view we need to work hard promoting all of the good things going on in the city, as our reputation is sometimes overshadowed by stag and hen weekends. From the moment visitors arrive at the station we need to ensure that we are a welcome and open city. When we are referred to as London by the sea – that's almost an insult – we are in a unique situation where we are accessible from all parts of Europe. We have an airport that is 20 mins away. I think we need to do all that we can to ensure that we become the destination of choice by using all the resources that we have to highlight our achievements.

Rather than working individually in silos, we should all be working closely together, championing cross-promotion. Between myself and Andrew Mosely (The Grand) or Sasha Koeler (The Hilton) I think a knitted approach would work best, the reality of it is that although the hotels compete with each other, there are times of the year when there's simply not enough beds in the city. We are the only cricket club and there's only one football club. Collaboration across all businesses is absolutely key. This would impact in reducing the amount of money we would have to spend in terms of development and promotion, we can also get a much more unified message out there which is really important. How would you implement cross-promotion? We have previously tried it with The Grand. When we promote our hospitality packages at the club for visitors who come from much further afield. Linking up with Andrew, we would offer a hospitality and accommodation package. What we've talked about is actually booking train travel as well. This would take the excuse of not being able to come here away from the potential visitor. I feel that a joined up approach will work best. The difficulty with this idea is that we don't have enough beds during peak times. If a political conference or trade union is taking place the whole city is booked up and this is often during a time when we need to be attracting people. Another thing we need to work on is our brand. This is something which I have been involved with in the employer skills task force watch on

CITY PLANNER DR SAMER BAGAEEN MRTPI FRICS
CITY RESILIENCE Follow me: @SamerbagaeenH he City Resilience Framework was developed in 2015 by London-based consultancy Arup, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation. Its purpose is to provide a lens to understand the complexity of cities and the drivers that contribute to their resilience against floods, storms, wars, etc. Recognising these drivers will help cities assess the extent of their resilience, identify critical areas of weakness, and identify actions and programmes to improve a city’s resilience. So far so good. What then is city resilience? It describes the capacity of cities to function, so that all people living and working in cities survive and thrive no matter what stresses or shocks they encounter. Resilience as a term emerged from the field of ecology in the 1970s. It was initially used to describe the capacity of a system to maintain or recover functionality in the event of disruption or disturbance. The notion of a resilient city becomes relevant when chronic stresses or sudden shocks threaten widespread disruption or the collapse of physical or social systems. The same can be applied to the railway network describing its capability to overcome disruption as a result of leaves on the line, snow, wrong type of sunlight, etc. The conceptual limitation of resilience is that it does not As the necessarily account for the power dynamics that are inherent in the way 21st cities function and cope with century disruptions. This includes for unfolds, an examples the tension between the need to allow people to travel into the increasing city for jobs while not overwhelming majority of city resources. the world’s Resilience moves away from traditional disaster risk management, population which is founded on risk assessments will live in that relate to specific hazards. Instead, cities it accepts the possibility that a wide range of disruptive events – both stresses and shocks – may occur but are not necessarily predictable. Resilience focuses on enhancing the performance of a system in the face of multiple hazards, rather than preventing or mitigating the loss of assets due to specific events. Why then do we need city resilience? As the 21st century unfolds, an increasing majority of the world’s population will live in cities. This is a growing majority. Human wellbeing in cities relies on a complex web of interconnected institutions, infrastructure and information. People are drawn to cities as centres of economic activity, opportunity and innovation. But cities are also places where stresses accumulate or sudden shocks occur that may result in social breakdown, physical collapse or economic deprivation. Unless a city is resilient, that is. Cities have always faced risks and many cities that have existed for centuries have demonstrated their resilience in the face of resource shortages, natural hazards and conflict. In the 21st century, global pressures that play out at a city scale such as climate change, disease pandemics, economic fluctuations, and terrorism pose new challenges. The scale of urban risks is increasing due to the number of people living in cities. Risk is also increasingly unpredictable due to the complexity of city systems and the uncertainty associated with many hazards, especially climate change. The Arup/Rockefeller City Resilience Framework responds to this challenge by providing an accessible, evidence-based articulation of city resilience. www.samerbagaeen.com, www.100resilientcities.org
T which is concerned with apprenticeships and employability. We have this view that there is a young creative environment in Brighton, but when we talk about this and try to quantify it we have difficulty. I think it's about how we create that brand – this is a great place to be, a great place to do business, lots of small start up organisations that can knit and work together and really start to create a vibrant brand.

What’s new at Sussex Cricket? There have been some key developments, first and foremost we are now known as Sussex Cricket. There were two boards here at the club, Sussex County Cricket Club and The Sussex Cricket Board. We have now amalgamated. What that means is that we have created Sussex Cricket (ltd). The cricket family is all under one umbrella. This vision has been ten years in the making. Not only that, we have also developed the North East corner of the ground and installed five pods, I am delighted to say that two are already built and have been sold, the others are under offer. Graves Jenkins have looked after the sales for us and have done an amazing job! BYGONE DAYS
ANDY GARTH, BRIGHTON & HOVE STUFF
am back from the (very bleak) North Norfolk coast having completed the writing of my first book. I was staying in my friend Katy’s holiday chalet and the weather was so bad that the satellite dish blew off the roof on the second night, leaving me with no TV, which was just as well, as I was supposed to be working. I’d imagine my week was much more productive without the distracting influence of the gogglebox in the corner. I am now involved in the tedious task of the mechanics of editing, laying-out and publishing the book online. I don’t like staying at home at the best of times, but now it’s minus 4 degrees outside, it’s even worse as I’m too much of a cheapskate to have the heating on during the day, so am sitting here working in a hat, gloves and boots. It doesn’t help that, when I speak to my friends in Cuba, they are constantly grumbling about their winter weather, which is a balmy 21 degrees, a whole 25 degrees warmer than ours. When there is a task at hand, especially when it is entirely reliant on self-motivation, I am always on the lookout for things to do to take me away from the execution of said Book task. So yesterday publishing morning, The Big task still looming Daughter and I went ominously, I did for a 10 mile run along the crisply my tax return freezing, beautiful cliff tops East of Brighton as a practise run for the Worthing Half Marathon in February. Then naturally, we had to have coffee and brunch after that. My laptop remained firmly closed as it seemed churlish to start working two thirds of the way through the day. Today, with the same book publishing task still looming ominously, I did my tax return, which is a January job that normally has me recoiling in horror and I only usually force myself to get the calculator out on January 30th at the very earliest. After that, I engaged in the delightful task of cleaning out the gutter which runs the entire length of the roof of my house. Normally I have to drag myself kicking and screaming onto the roof to clear the gutter, which just goes to show how much less I enjoy the complexities of online publishing. I now have only tomorrow free to break the back of my online publishing task, but have already decided to go to two morning classes at the gym which will definitely delay my starting time. At least I’ll be warm from my workout...

ome say the shop is an Aladdin's cave, others call it Dickensian, all because of the noticeable lack of technology available which would in fact be very useful... but in some ways would detract from the pleasure had by touching and feeling old (some very old) historic items. So, as a consequence of this Dark Agestype approach, it seems that a couple of my columns have described pictures that I somehow seemed to have not sent in either the right format or even the same email! So to rectify... The picture below shows Woodland Drive (at the Junction of Shirley Drive) in all its 1938 glory and having once been a resident the view is very much the same (well at least on the western side!). The picture above is The health what is now the Blind Busker in Church Road shop in the taken for an auction in picture was 1960 during far more verging on the sedentary times when the health shop in the radical picture was verging on the radical. Although Church Road was still – as it is now – full of estate agents and solicitors offices it also had large book shops (Combridges) and toy shops (Gamleys). It was still a local shopping area with far fewer restaurants and even less coffee shops, and which unbelievably burned down exactly 50 years ago, the most beautiful Town Hall – which I will talk about next week. Leaders
Baron Estates
Wheelers
Having lived in the Sussex area all my life and worked in the Brighton & Hove property industry for over 4 years I have seen Leaders grow and prosper at a rapid pace and decided that I would very much like to be part of that success. I joined Leaders as part of the large lettings team but recently moved in to the sales department and am currently the Senior Sales Negotiator at the busy Western Road Branch. Over the past six month the sales department has gone from strength to strength and I am looking forward to being involved in what looks set to be a very busy year for Leaders. Max Shave, Leaders 119-120 Western Road, Brighton. BN1 2AD,. 01273 720714, www.leaders.co.uk
John started his career within a small independent Estate Agents in Hove – over the last 8 years he has progressed to his current role at Baron Estates as sales manager. He is very motivated and strives to offer a transparent service at all times. John feels that customer service is key and will ensure that regular feedback is given with positive advice at all times. Call John to discuss any property related matter or email him. jonathan@baron-estates.com 20 Western Road, Hove. BN3 1AE, 01273 733334, www.baron-estates.com
Professional but more relaxed in our approach, ‘suited and booted’ we are not. Established in 2001, we are an award winning agency, with plenty of repeat business over the years. Covering all areas, but mainly known for specialising in sales for the Hanover, Elm Grove, Queens Park and Lewes Road areas of Brighton. Joe Wheeler the Director is very hands on, doing viewings and the valuations and he is very ably assisted by his sales manageress Alison Crawford. Happy to help in any way we can, so please do get in touch. SATURDAY 13 The Voice UK BBC1, 7.15pm It’s the sixth blind auditions and if you don’t want a swivel chair and at least one article of will.i.a.m’s wardrobe you have no ambition. Tonight’s hopefuls include a former Eurovision representative, former pop star and ‘Are You Being Served?’ alumni, and a couple of familiar faces who’ve played this Voice-rodeo before.
Ninja Warrior UK ITV1, 7pm When it comes down to it, when it’s really brass tacks, there are few ways in which you can come closer to playing out lots of Tomb Raider re-enactments than by taking part in Ninja Warrior. Jumping, clinging, climbing, running – who’s not impressed the rear view isn’t pixellating? This is the final, by the way.
FILM: Magic Mike E4, 9pm The canny move of Channing Tatum to loosely base a movie on his own experiences as an exotic dancer, and then to star and coproduce in the result, comes to fruition in the sweet film that is Magic Mike. Mentoring a young man, falling for his sister, and trying to forge his own legitimate path. And some clever moves.
