here was a flurry of excitement in our office this week when someone spotted a dolphin swimming around the West Pier; a great reminder of how lucky we are to work at the seafront. The photo went viral on our Facebook page receiving more than five thousand likes! Meanwhile we have been busy promoting British Airways i360 to the world. We hosted a group of 24 travel trade buyers from China who came on a hard hat tour and met travel journalists in a day of ‘speed dating’ in London. We have been exhibited at the Best of Britain and Ireland at the NEC in Birmingham and at Explore GB in Liverpool, which is Visit Britain’s showcase event for more than 300 international buyers. We heard the exciting news that this event will come to Brighton in 2017, which will be a great opportunity to showcase the city’s offer. We are busy recruiting with eight management jobs currently being advertised. We welcomed our 10th and 11th team members: Emily Bamber, a travel journalist, has joined as our PR and Communications Manager; and Eva Holt as our retail buyer. www.britishairwaysi360.com Twitter/Instagram: @ba_i360 Facebook: British Airways i360 Dolphin photo credit is Finn Hopson, from Brighton Photography in West Pier Arches’ 'Creative Quarter'

he BA i360 visitor experience for most will begin at road level and end at beach level. With hundreds of thousands expected each year, I was particularly interested to see the behindthescenes areas that they won’t get to see. My tour with Operations Manager David Samuel (known by many as founder of Paddle Round The Pier) began upstairs beside the newly installed east toll booth which will reopen in due course as a tea room. Visitors will enter the pod from road level but disembark at beach level. At beach level, I am particularly looking forward to seeing the control room completed, along with the exhibition rooms and large restaurant. From a number of vantage points, it is easy to see just how large the pod is from the size of the cavern that is its resting place. It is also possible to see that a basement exists below beach level. This is where the tower is tethered to the grounds with huge nuts and bolts, above which huge shock absorbers are located (like at the end of a train line). Most fascinating is the giant winch that pulls down a counterbalance to lift the pod. www.buildingopinions.com

hile I was in Havana a couple of weeks ago, I received an email (a miraculous thing in Havana, I can tell you) from the very vigilant lessee who lives above one of my rental flats near Seven Dials. He was not very happy to inform me that my new tenant had yet again fallen foul of the illadvised ‘sleeping and cooking’ combination and had filled the house with smoke. I promised to have a word with my tenant, but don’t know what more I can do, bar disconnect the electricity, or bind her to a totem pole out of reach of the cooker in the middle of the living room…. Mildly irritating though it is to be informed of my tenant’s minor mishaps while on holiday, I would rather keep an eye on what they’re up to as I don’t like to think that they’re upsetting their fellow housemates. Luckily, the days of really bad tenant behaviour seem to be far behind me and many of you who’ve read this column over the years might remember some of the more horriblybehaved tenants who’ve graced these pages in the past. These days, an iron burn on the carpet or a cremated dinner seems to be the pinnacle of bad behaviour. I am selling one of my flats in Hastings in order to purchase a flat I found while I was recently in Havana. It is huge, both from a bargain and a capacity point of view, with a living room big enough for a baseball game and a view of the Capitolio. On the downside, the plumbing is to die from, rather than to die for and parts of the flat, having succumbed to the tropical weather, have no roof at all, which might negate the need for air conditioning….
his week I am mainly going to be brownnosing to the very people that let me grace the pages of this fine publication. Reading the 1967 article above, thank God Bill Smith and his dedicated team sorted out the Latest TV channel as the thought of Brighton and Hove Council making the decision... would it be wrong of me to say that they would still be arguing about it. The opportunity to promote local information, as diverse as it is in the city, would have been lost under a mound of amendments, huffing and puffing and the usual 'we don't like it so there' attitude? This leads me on to a photo of some fabulous coloured Hippodrome adverts. This week the Hippodrome has been promoted by the magazine and Latest TV as another example of the power of dedicated and passionate volunteers – who have got to a position where this fabulous venue with its architectural, historic and artistic heritage is within touching distance of becoming a reality. Which will be another attraction to enforce the position of Brighton and Hove's popularity around the globe. It's also another proposition that has sort of been removed from the council’s hands, therefore a common sense, commercial decision being put in place by experts and professionals who realise the potential rather than the political gain.

T
racey Narvaez, Event Manager at The Starr Trust, is a proud Brightonian, who by her own admission adores the place where she was born and raised: “I've always loved Brighton, I lived in Florida for seven years, but this is home. I'm also fortunate enough to be working with so many great local businesses.” She advocates all new developments within the city, such as BA i360, believing that anything new can only enhance the city: “We have a lot of history here, but it’s good to have a mixture of old and new builds.” The Starr Trust was set up to honour the late Edward Starr, who would certainly be proud of its achievements. The charity has been instrumental in changing the prospects of local young people since it was established in 2008. Many events have been organised over the years, which have not only raised money, but also enhanced lives. One such event, 'Cooking for Starrs', has unfortunately fallen foul of the Central Government cuts. The cookery contest was set up four years ago at Brighton City College and gave student chefs the opportunity to create menus, under the expert tutelage of Michelin starred Chef, Matt Gillen. The young chefs were able to showcase their talents and also gain future employment at some very salubrious restaurants, such as Camellia Restaurant at South Lodge Hotel and the Ginger Pig in Hove. A percentage of them also went on to join the prestigious Chefs Academy at South Lodge. The event was so successful that Northbrook College approached Tracey asking if they could host their own version. She explained: “The guests sampled six delicious courses with wine pairing suggestions, both designed by the students. The food was then critiqued and votes were cast on who should win. The Hilton Brighton Metropole were the main sponsor of the event. It was a really fantastic experience for everyone involved, but sadly due to the cuts, City College can't afford to run the event this year. I read a news report which stated that England are short of 70,000 chefs, so losing events like this will certainly impact on those statistics.”

CITY PLANNER > Samer Bagaeen MRTPI FRICS The ‘other’ King Alfred scheme
@Samerbagaeen

his column picks up a question being asked locally by a lot of people: “Should the council have approved the ‘other’ King Alfred scheme?”. This is because of course the rejected plans for the King Alfred development were revealed a few days ago by Nick Lomax and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the imaginative designs. The leisure centre design reminded me of the lovely new train station in Rotterdam. The new station, designed by a team made up of Benthem Crouwel Architects + MVSA Architects + West 8, has a grand entrance on the high rise side of the city and a more discreet entrance on the low density terraced housing side. In Lomax’s scheme, the reverse tiered terracing in the tower blocks would have, if built, broken up the mass of the proposed buildings allowing for a cascading effect both towards and away from the seafront. It is not clear if the leisure centre building has a plaza in front of it but it looks from the pictures like it does. If so, then the overlooking from inside the centre onto the plaza and the seafront beyond would have provided the city with a fantastic new civic building, something the approved scheme does not provide equally well. As many have said though, it is still early days for the Starr scheme, which also has many merits and a lot of things can still change. What is certain is that Brighton and Hove need a new plaza along the seafront on the Hove side of town. Rotterdam is, in my mind, the city of the future, and Brighton and Hove needs an anchor (let’s not use the word iconic) building to raise its profile. This scheme seems to offer the city’s best chance. Rotterdam's newfound status as a city of the future was affirmed by its inclusion in Lonely Planet's list of the top 10 cities to visit in 2016. In Rotterdam, landmark buildings and experimental construction are transforming the Netherlands' second city into a worldclass destination for architectural innovation, outstripping other European centres and turning Amsterdam into ‘the city of the past’. That’s not what Brighton and Hove should aspire to be. It should aspire to innovate and experiment or at least, it falls on the city and its leadership to create an ecology where things can happen.

department, something she is looking forward to: “Each department will come together in order to create a whole look from head to toe, body paint, textiles, makeup and hair. There will be a prize for each category individually and for the overall look. Lots of local and London businesses will assist with judging and hopefully offer employment to the students. The event is being sponsored by Murray Media, who are responsible for Brighton's Big Screen and The Hilton Metropole are kindly providing the venue.” So what else does this year hold for The Starr Trust? On 22nd June a charity cycling event will take place – ‘The Brighton to Brighton Bike Ride’. Participants will travel by coach, supplied by Brighton and Hove Buses, to Brighton in Cornwall. So far 30 people have signed up and will cycle the gruelling 277 miles, returning to Brighton on June 26. Tracey admitted: “I will be there doing everything but cycling!” The event will culminate with a party on the beach at Brighton’s Big Screen. September sees the return of ‘Starr Wars’, a fun family fundraiser, hosted at Hove Lagoon. Dozens of businesses have signed up to take part, with teams of four going head tohead in the multi sport event. Norman Cook and Big Beach Cafe are supporting the day. Last year’s golf event raised £8,500, the winning team were Elliots Estate Agents. TH W O R G E S U O H N E P O G IN N N U ST > Open House Estate Agents are coasting into the city
I
t seems an age since the world of estate agents was rocked by the idea that their days were numbered. The internet was ringing a very loud death knell for the traditional agent as the young online agents were offering a shocking new concept – an estate agent with no shop front! Whilst the traditional agency remains, the online agent has pushed the internet to what is now a major part of the world of estate agency. Along with those who are simply fascinated by looking into the homes of others, a massive 93% of homebuyers use the internet to search for their new home before entering a high street office, it is without doubt the essential tool. What also remains is that people like to deal with people, talk face to face and meet a real person. This was the thinking behind Open House when it was launched by Stuart Foster. Latest Homes met with Stuart when he launched a few years ago and back then he was keen to express that, whilst he would not have a high street office, he would still be offering a traditional personal service for all of his clients and for the more realistic fee of 0.6% (incl. VAT), a promise he tells us he is still able to maintain. Since his launch he has made a considerable impression in the area that he lives in and knows best, Peacehaven, Telscombe Cliffs and Saltdean, evident by the number of SOLD boards on the streets of those areas. But Stuart’s ambition was always to bring his concept across the city,
which is why he is delighted to now form a partnership with Neil Standing. Both have shared a history in the property industry and started at Joan Lampon and Co. in Saltdean in 1988. Over time they both became disenchanted by the corporate attitudes that were becoming prevalent in the industry. Neil started Avards estate agency in 2000 and sold it in 2008, and since has been working in associated property businesses. Neil says “I returned to sales in late 2015. I just wanted to get back into it and had missed the sales environment, meeting people and helping them to find new and sell their existing homes for the best possible price. By joining forces with Stuart I am confident we can grow what he has successfully started and build the business to expand on the areas we are already established in. My previous agency was based on Ditchling Road and covered the area around Fiveways very successfully. Now it is time to join up the dots, build on my success in that area and move along the coast, through the ‘Deans’, Kemp Town, Hanover and beyond. It is an ambitious plan, but with the service we offer at the excellent rates we charge, one we are confident we can succeed in.” Stuart adds: “My business has gone well and grown too, it was clear that the time was right to expand and Neil was the perfect partner. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table along with the same ethos and

“From the moment I met Stuart I trusted him.
When he attended my property on the Saturday to take the pictures for the website, I was impressed with his advice and his professional attitude. Added to this, the photos were updated and online within 24 hours and online by the Sunday, ready for people to see by Monday. Standard agents would have taken a week to do this, as they only open for normal business hours. Open House are contactable 24/7. All this and I saved thousands of pounds! Throughout the whole process Stuart was calm, professional, knowledgeable and on board with my sale and the chain situation. I would not hesitate to recommend Stuart and Open House and will definitely use him again.” Hamish, Upper Lewes Road, Brighton passion to offer a great service at a reasonable price. He will certainly help expand the area in which we operate. “Choosing not to have a high street office was seen by many to be a mistake at the time, but I have certainly proved it can work efficiently. We have many very happy clients who will testify to that, and to the fact that our charges are more than attractive, they may be unbeatable! Open House is very much a facetoface business focused on doing a proper job for all our buyers and vendors. As it is our own business, we are the bosses and codirectors with an eye on building a more successful citywide profile”. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 8
Stuart continues: “People should be aware that within our business format we are able to suit the needs of our clients at their convenience. This is no 95 business and we have a 24 hour call service that will guarantee we can respond to our clients and potential buyers seven days a week. If we cannot answer ourselves, the call centre will take a message and email us immediately, ensuring our clients deal only with Neil or myself throughout their buying or selling experience. This business is about our clients and we are happy to work around their busy lives.” It is clear that both Stuart and Neil are focused on serving the needs of home buyers and sellers and their plans to expand along the coast and into the city is well thought out. So much so, their new website clearly reflects their target area where they both have specialist knowledge and love for. Neil adds: “I really want to rekindle local relationships where I live and work as well as offering a great service, Stuart already does just that and hones the brand in the area he is best known in. Together we certainly bring something good to the market. We both want to do a proper job for a good price, offer a high level of professionalism, as good as is possible, whilst not charging the earth. We are both confident that we can do this and that people will like both our style and our low fees!”. > Tips on how to brighten up your home this spring
S
pring is with us, there are daffodils in our gardens and the sun is setting later, giving us those much missed longer daylight hours. Light is life giving in so many ways and dare I say it in effectively selling a home. So here are a few tips for showing your home in the very best light. Let's start with the living spaces, keep them light and bright pull back those curtains, open those blinds and let the sun shine in. At the same time be prepared to draw those curtains and blinds and think through how you might demonstrate how cosy and warm a room can look at night. Kitchens should be practical and light, if you have under unit lighting then turn it all on, even by day. If you have a

combined cooking and dining space then demonstrate how versatile your lighting can be. Upstairs a bathroom should be bright and clean, if you have lights at mirrors again turn them on, even for daytime viewings. Bedrooms can look cosier, no need to pull those curtains right back, create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort and again turn on those bedside lamps, far better to show a lamp than point out that there are ample available power points! A good idea is to walk through your home as if you are viewing it with a buyers eye. Tidy away lighting flexes, look for dark spots and find a way of lighting them and replace any broken bulbs, especially those in undercover units and wardrobes with lights that should come on when you open the door. Think of all this as a rehearsal, stage your viewings well and give potential buyers the performance of a lifetime and show your home in the very best light.

Baron Estates
Leaders
John Hoole
Jonathan started his career within a small independent Estate Agents in Hove and over the last 8 years he has progressed to his current role at Baron Estates as a Sales Manager. “I was born in Brighton and I have lived here all my life, I love the buzz and atmosphere of this city and for me there is no better place to live”. Jonathan feels that customer service is really important and will ensure regular feedback with positive advice at all times. Call Jonathan to discuss any property related matter or email him. Jonathan@baronestates.com or 01273 733 334. 20 Western Road, Hove, BN3 1AE, www.baronestates.com
Having lived in the Sussex area all my life and worked in the Brighton & Hove property industry for over 4 years I have seen Leaders grow and prosper at a rapid pace and decided that I would very much like to be part of that success. I joined Leaders as part of the large lettings team but recently moved in to the sales department and am currently the Senior Sales Negotiator at the busy Western Road Branch. Over the past six months the sales department has gone from strength to strength and I am looking forward to being involved in what looks set to be a very busy year for Leaders. Max Shave, Leaders 119-120 Western Road, Brighton. BN1 2AD,. 01273 720714, www.leaders.co.uk
“After just under 10 successful years, we have grown to become a firm favourite amongst sellers and buyers in this area. With Brighton & Hove being one of the most desirable places to live in the UK, the prospects are really looking very good. Work with us in 2015 and you will find a company that is refreshingly professional, reliable and innovative, always striving to exceed expectations every single day. In a recent survey by The Property Ombudsman, 100% of those surveyed would recommend our services to friends and family. As I tell my colleagues, there is still always room for improvement!” John Hoole, 214 Dyke Road, Brighton, BN1 5AA, 01273 555115, www.johnhoole.co.uk

“Chris Still and Richard Phillips are the Managing Directors, bringing with them over 30 years of combined experience. Our primary aim is to ensure the highest level of customer care whilst providing a professional and tailored service to suit each individual. “We ensure that your property gets full market coverage by advertising on websites that gain the most traffic, alongside local property magazines and eyecatching ‘For Sale’ boards. Not only is our aim to always achieve the best price for your property or find you that dream home, but we are equally focused on removing from you the stresses that can often come with moving house.” Phillips & Still, 112 Western Road, Brighton, BN1 2AB, 01273 771111, www.phillipsandstill.co.uk
Q Estate Agents have established an enviable reputation for delivering friendly, informed advice to their clients and achieving exceptional results through their striking approach to marketing. TUESDAY 22 It’s Not Rocket Science ITV1, 8pm Woo hoo! It would seem that to mark the last episode in the series Romesh’s life will not be in peril to prove a scientific point. Nice one, Rom! Not so good for Rachel Riley, as the bike-loving lady rides a cycle 60 feet above the ground across a steel cable. Yikes! And Romesh sees science is involved in dating apps.
Inside Obama’s White House BBC2, 9pm The second in the documentary series turns its attention to Obama’s greatest legacy – healthcare. Documenting the conflict surrounding this mission the president set himself from the off, leading to infighting within his own party, and crescendoing with a face down between bishops and nuns. Really happened.
The Aliens E4, 9pm Life never stops when you’re part alien living in a ghetto on Earth. It’s tough, man. And then there’s the factions. Uh oh. Lilyhot is stirring something up that’s not easy on the eyes when she urges Antoine to start a gang war with Fabien, and she’s pretty convinced he can retake control of Troy. Hmm.

WEDNESDAY 23 Masterchef BBC1, 8pm John Torode and Greg Wallace return to the judging tables and we once again wish that tasteby-television – or at least smellivision – as mouths water at the calling card dishes the hopefuls serve up, willing it to be enough to help them pursue their culinary dreams. Fingers crossed a favourite won’t leave tonight.
Employable Me BBC2, 9pm It’s not easy to find a job, less so when you have a neurological condition. 52-year-old Paul was suddenly hit by severe Tourette’s Syndrome six years ago, and 34year-old Brett has autism and hasn’t been able to get a job in eight years. A different look at their specialness opens up brand new career potentials.
The 100 E4, 9pm Why is it, do you suppose, that whenever there’s an apocalypse, it’s always the beautiful people who seem to survive? Because this lot are stunning, even with a spot of strategically placed mud dashed across their faces. ‘Fierce’ leader Clark is torn between obtaining vengeance and showing mercy. Grr.

THURSDAY 24 Ugly House To Lovely House With George Clarke Channel 4, 8pm It’s quite something to call your home ‘ugly’. No one wants that. Denise and Ali have £120,000 to transform their council house in Croydon, and plans that are big. Huge.
Line Of Duty BBC2, 9pm A police drama about the police that police the police? Don’t mind if we do. Sergeant Danny Wadron and his armed response team have shot dead a hardened criminal. That’s a bit bad. But when cracks start to appear in their stories it holds the potential to become a lot worse. How will it all end?
DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow Sky1, 8pm If you were a super villain who could travel to any point through time, it’s hardly surprising that Russia in the 1980s seemed like a safe place to hide. According to the rest of the world (specifically th US) it was teaming with baddies! Perfect place to blend in. Good thing the team are on the trail of Vandal Savage.
