> British Airways i360’s commitment to the Brighton & Hove living wage
I
n November 2014, we proudly signed up to the Brighton & Hove Living Wage Campaign, which means we have pledged to pay all our direct employees a minimum of £8.25 per hour. We will be directly employing approximately 60 full time and around 20 parttime staff and all of our colleagues will earn at least the Living Wage. This includes young people aged under 25 who are recent school or college leavers who are typically on lower pay. We have also in sourced many traditionally lowpaid roles, such as cleaning and security who also will be paid at this rate. We encourage all of our suppliers to join the Brighton & Hove Living Wage Campaign and several have done so. In the case of the catering and photography businesses operating at the i360, they have made the decision to pay their staff the Government’s National Living Wage hourly rate and in many cases this is topped up by tips or commission. We are one of a handful of Brighton & Hove organisations in the hospitality or tourism sectors who have signed up to this commitment and we hope that others will follow suit. > Bright’n’Beautiful Sauna Club
D
espite walking past it hundreds of times when I lived in Sussex Heights, it never occurred to me that the small plantpacked adjoining kiosk was anything other than a florist’s, though thinking back, it did strike me as a little strange that its only customers were male. The Bright’n’Beautiful Sauna Club closed in August 2014 and, in its heyday, was known as the oldest such establishment in the city. Its entrance portal occupies a curious position; on St Margaret’s Place, attached to the tallest building in the county. This leads on to a long bar area that runs between Sussex Heights and houses on Russell Square. The rest is located within the basement and ground floor of 35 Russell Square which seems to have started out as a shop. Local developer Colin Brace plans to split the St Margaret’s Place and Russell Square elements of the site. The two floors within 35 Russell Square are to be turned into flats which will involve recreating a rear courtyard area. The St Margaret’s Place entrance and bar areas will be flattened and replaced with a rather attractive twostorey cottage featuring glazed brick and cream render (at least it isn’t the dreaded white render). Other adjoining spaces will no doubt follow this trend. During my visit, one punter turned up for a session and was quite disappointed to be turned away. Bright’n’Beautiful was clearly a Brighton institution despite its incredibly dated interior. Tigerprint curtains and pineclad walls should set the scene, along with nine booths that were decorated with whatever tiles happened to be available at the time. Whilst the décor was amusing, and the underground nature of the establishment stirring, it felt quite wrong that a cross section of the community was essentially banished to this hidden location – out of the public eye. www.buildingopinions.com

THE ISSUE To let
> Andrew Kay says renting is good
A
fter a week in Holland and Belgium I was reminded that in both countries renting a home is not stigmatised as it so often is here. To them renting is a smart option and carries none of the weird class issues that we seem not to be able to shed. I suppose that this goes back to the days of real class distinction where the middle classes bought their homes, the working classes rented and the upper classes lived in inherited castles. I generalise of course, but those who rented were looked down on. Well not any more. More and more of us are choosing to rent, perhaps out of necessity, but more often from choice. Renting is a smart and modern way to find a home. It can offer flexibility if your work is likely to move you
around and it can offer simplicity and ease when it comes to bills and household maintenance. Okay, the legend is that all landlords are bad, but it simply isn't true, and the more properties that we see for rent here at Latest Homes, the more we are aware of that. The age of the rogue is almost over and in its place comes the aware landlord who offers excellent homes, finished to high standard in the knowledge that most tenants given a smart home will be smart enough to maintain and respect it. Much of this is down to a generation of letting agents who support this idea and ensure that the people that they represent offer a good deal to their tenants and respect their rights too. There may be a few rogues left, but as a tenant you have rights and there are appropriate bodies in place to help you exercise those rights. Renting, the future for so many of us.

f ever further evidence was required to reinforce the view that the auction method of sale is the way forward, Parsons Son & Basley have shown once again that their way is not only the best, but fast becoming the only way to sell any type of property. Following on from recently exchanging contracts on a property in just 90 minutes from the time of the viewing, they have been at it again, this time by selling a freehold terrace of houses with planning permission granted for a 21 room HMO building in Worthing within 73 hours from the viewing taking place and from a guide price of £1.1 to £1.2 million.

Auctioneer Simon Caplin was delighted with the result. “This one took a couple of days longer to exchange than the Blatchington Road property however it was a lot more complicated whilst we still achieved a wonderful price for our client. y house is currently masquerading as a sieve. As I write this, I have a spooky sense of dejavu, as if I have written that sentence many times over the years. I think I probably have. My house, at times goes off the rails in the style of a wellintentioned but slightly mad parent who wishes to care for her children in the best possible manner but sometimes can't help but to revert to her old, bad habits (note to my children at this point; this analogy is in no way supposed to represent me). My house has been an impeccable guardian over the years, apart from its insistence at springing leaks every so often. Although some are obvious, many are mysterious and ebb and flow seemingly without cause or reason. Although money has been in short supply over the past couple of years, I've finally managed to scrape enough together to repair and paint the rear of my house, with – fingers crossed – the front taking it's turn towards the end of this year. Fortunately, a friend of The Big Son is doing a deal on the scaffolding for me, meaning that I'm actually paying less for this service than I did 8 years ago. Unfortunately this bargain price comes with the footnote that the scaffolder, whom I've known since he was a teenager, is a man of slightly dubious repute in Brighton, his reliability questionable. This, however is the least of my worries and the biggest problem has been how to get the scaffolding into the garden. Specifically, it has to be transported over land owned by two apparently warring neighbours. Luckily, I get on with both and although the scaffolding is going up today, I have not yet received any crapulous missives on my mobile. It doesn't help that I'm in Havana at the moment, which could win awards for badly leaking period properties, some of which make mine look as watertight as a submarine....

t's Auction time again on July 26 for Brighton and Hove Stuff, and my good friend Robert Jeeves of Step Back In Time in Queens Road (or as he is known 'the postcard man!). We are both amazed at the number and variety of items that we are getting in to sell – and the reason I am announcing it early is that we have had to stop at 225 lots! We’ve already started the list for our September sale which is already numbers 100 lots as I write this. It's a great feeling to know that you are not the only geek in town, interested in the stuff that we sell. An added pleasure is that new (and younger) buyers are coming along and buying bits of history priced from £2 £500. The pictures this week include a couple of stunning shopfronts, the first showing, for once, the planning department’s determination to chide a large well known supermarket chain as the elegant Palmeira Stores shown (corner of Holland Road and Western Road) – don't want to mention any brand name but it rhymes with Unesco – was the place to go for the wealthy Hoverians in the late 19th century. The other picture shows the corner of Western Road and Western Terrace opposite another large brand that rhymes with 'firehose', and is the department store Sharmans that became Plummers then Debenhams and is now a restaurant. Again, a stunning and inviting shop front that would have drawn people in to sample the wares! If you would like a copy of the next Auction Catalogue please email me Brightonandhovestuff@gmail.com

> Why the Labour Party want to create a new school holiday for Brighton and Hove
T
he lack of flexibility within the current term time pattern, has caused a lot of controversy in the media recently. Many families struggle either financially or with work commitments to have a summer getaway together. Some are even fined for removing their children during term time. This week in Project Brighton, Latest TV’s Frank Le Duc, discusses a new proposal that could help alleviate the problem, with Labour Party Councillor, Tom Bewick. Tell me about the new proposal? There'll still be the same number of school holidays as there are currently, but what we're doing is taking advantage of some national legislation that came in a couple of years ago, that gave local authorities the flexibility to change the pattern of term time holidays. Parents are well used to the usual term time pattern, but what we've now managed to get through my committee, is the proposal to consult on three possible dates for a stand alone week out of the usual term time pattern. This could essentially be in March, April or October.

@Lab_Westbourne
The complaint from people is that it's so expensive in the summer to go on holiday, can't you fix it so that we can have holidays when everyone else isn't? That is just one perspective. I would just like to say though that cheaper school holidays is not what has driven this reform. We are responding to parents in the city, particularly those lead by Annie Heath's petition, which asked for a more flexible approach. It's also about creating space within the school year for families to be together, or perhaps even breaking up the long summer holiday.
“ The idea is to
trial the stand alone week for two years, from September 2017 ”
Have you won friends and influenced people in looking at how you can do this and give ground? The consultation showed very clearly that the parents in the city support this idea. Over 60 per cent that were consulted thought that this was a good move. Some teachers and parents are concerned about it, because they are used to the traditional term time pattern and make plans around that, so maybe this would be a difficult

adjustment for them. I can understand those concerns, which is why we took the proposal to the committee, to be agreed by The Director of Children's Services, who makes the final decision, in conjunction with some political leadership from the committee. The idea is to trial the stand alone week for two years, from September 2017. We are going to try it, and evaluate after the two year period. We will involve the work force, teachers and the like in the evaluation – and see where we go from there.
“ Parents are
being penalised unnecessarily ”
There have been many cases in the media recently of parents being fined for taking their children out of school during term time. One case was in the Isle of White, of John Platt, which was settled at The High Court. The Isle of White Council has since appealed. You wrote to Nicky Morgan, The Education Secretary about this. What did you say to her? I was surprised by the kneejerk reaction from her department officials, which was basically saying that they would rush to change the law and make the system even more punitive than it is already. I wrote to the Secretary of State to say that this is

A
network of abandoned or inactive rail lines or tunnels lies in the heart of some of our towns and cities. Some even exist in Brighton and Hove. Many cities around the world have taken to revamping this abandoned rail infrastructure, opening it for the local community to use and enjoy. In Sydney for example, the Goods Line provides frontseat views to Sydney’s newest architectural masterpiece by Frank Gehry (don’t tell the Hovites!), and at The University of Technology, Sydney’s Dr Chau Chak Wing building, also known as ‘the paper bag’ for its crumpled appearance. For 129 years the Goods Line carried some of Australia’s most important commodities: coal, shale, wheat and timber. By the time the train line was decommissioned in the 1980s, that heavy industry was gone and in its place were cultural institutions including the university. This revitalisation project was commissioned by the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, opening public access to the former rail lines. The Goods Line has a big brother in its more famous New York counterpart, The High Line – a 2km elevated repurposed railroad that snakes through the city. The High Line opened to trains in 1934, with the last train running in 1980. In 1999, Friends of the High Line was founded by two residents of the High Line neighbourhood, to advocate for the Line's preservation and reuse as public open space. In Sydney and New York, both projects belong to a worldwide movement of urban renewal and revitalisation. They are joined in this respect by Rotterdam in the Netherlands where, an old station at the Hofplein and its viaduct in the centre of Rotterdam, have been turned into a public park as part of a broader citywide network of open spaces.
“ The High Line – a
an opportunity, following the Isle of White High Court ruling, to come out to local authorities, to talk to education leaders, head teachers, the teacher unions, but also groups of parents. To have a further debate about a system which first and foremost encourages maximum attendance. For those who flout those rules there are systems in place, like the fines that help clamp down on irregular attendance. But at the same time, these blanket bans have been in place since the regulations were changed in 2013. I think there are signs that across the country parents who do well by their children, send them to school for 95 per cent and plus of the time, but have particular circumstances that mean they request taking their children out of school in term time. That they are being penalised unnecessarily. For full interview: www.thelatest.co.uk/search The Vote/ Tom Bewick LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

GOLDSTONE HOMES > Latest Homes meets Jon Over
I
t’s 18 months since we met Jon Over from Goldstone Homes and in those years his business has rapidly changed. Back then it was based in a tiny office by the River Adur but now they are in the Dolphin Enterprise Centre in much larger premises with 2,000 sq ft of office and warehouse space. clearly things are going well but has the nature of their business changed in those two years? "We are still doing new build housing and large scale refurbishments, and at the moment we have around £2,000,000 worth of work on our books with the potential for a further £1,000,000 by the time this article will come out." It is a clear sign of success but not one that has come without a lot of hard work. Back then Jon's parents were both on board, helping to run the business and two years later they are still there. " We are still a family business and our team has now grown to twelve directly employed people, plus another 30 people on average on our current sites every day and up to 60 or 70 when we are flat out." An impressive expansion that shows the company's dedication to creating work for local tradesmen. "We have been lucky over the last two years to have most of our work in and around the city centre but now we are moving
out with one project as far away as Thames Ditton and one potentially on Hayling Island. "Two years back we did a fair amount of commercial property development but now we are really doing a lot of very high end residential work. We have until recently focused on being a main building contractor for other property developers but now that has all changed and we have set up a second business as a property developer, Goldstone Developments. This was always our aim and now we are working with investors, architects and developers to create new homes under our control and our own banner. "And knowing that, we have to sell these ourselves so we are very choosy about who we work with to ensure that the quality is there and that we can make the best kind of homes and enjoy the return for our efforts. We have already handed over seventeen new properties with ten year guarantees and so far we have not had any cause to return. "The Withdean project that we are currently working on is in the very early stages but the drawings for these two luxury homes are very impressive and will be eventually marketed for around £1.5 million. The two homes in Woodingdean, a development called Thirty Four, are now on the market off plan for £399,950.”

We asked Jon if when he looks at the projects that he builds if he has any envy, does he want a house like this for himself; "I do want to build my own house one day, perhaps in the next three years, and I am sure that I will when the time is right. But right now I am focused on the next stage for the company and our future growth." So what is it that separates Goldstone from other companies? "Well the high spec finishes are a challenge and they have to look right. We use experts to achieve that finish and you cannot skimp on that. Some clients want that look but do not want to pay the price and we have to work around that – but never at the cost of it being a good job. "My next aim is to increase our turnover from £2.2 million to £4 million and we are already 75 per cent of the way there this year. Then I plan to turn over £10 million in two years and to create a stable business where we are doing a 50/50 balance LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
of our own developments and working for clients. We have rebranded and are very please with the new look. We also want to buy our own premises, maybe even build them and we really want to create more jobs for local trades people and create apprenticeships for talented young people who are keen to be in the building industry. We want to work with local architects, local educational establishments, designers and anyone else that comes along and fits in with our vision.” Goldstone is clearly a busy business which is why we are talking to Jon on a building site. "I never want to be that sort of officebound boss, I like being involved, being part of the team." It's a philosophy that is working and no doubt we will be hearing much more from them over the next few years. GOING GOING ALREADY GONE properties sell before auction
> Parsons Son & Basley Auction sells out without even lifting a gavel!
P
arsons Son & Basley’s June Auction was, to say the very least nothing other than a rousing success for one very good reason, they actually sold every single available property they had to offer prior to the date of the auction itself! “Of the 15 lots listed, five had to be withdrawn for legal and technical reasons which left ten properties available for sale with each and every one receiving preauction offers that comfortably exceeded our clients levels of expectation,” says auctioneer Simon Caplin. “To have a 100 per cent success rate of the properties we had available is a fantastic achievement but more importantly, our clients are absolutely delighted to have been able to achieve prices over those anticipated which in total was just shy of £3.5m and our highest yielding auction for some time. Our preference is of course to auction properties on the scheduled date however, when a response such as the one this auction has produced has been forthcoming we have to advise our clients accordingly, and if this means not being able to physically hold the auction then so be it as the best interests of our clients must always come first. “We cannot remember an auction house in Sussex ever selling out of properties preauction and quite naturally we are delighted if we are to be the first company to have been able to have achieved such a feat,” says auctioneer Simon. Entries are now being invited for their next auction whereupon it will be interesting to see if the same thing happens again? “It might,” alludes Simon, “as clearly buyers appear to like the certainty a preauction exchange of contracts brings whilst at the same time this ensures sellers are receiving prices above their expectation levels. The past 12 months have been extremely successful for us and long may it continue”. If you have a property you are thinking of selling and would like a free, no obligation valuation please contact the auctions team on 01273 274014 / www.psandb.co.uk

TUESDAY 28 The Living And The Dead BBC1, 9pm We all love a supernatural drama, don’t we? Things that go bump in the night can sometimes make more sense than things that turn up in real life claiming to be true. And this is in Victorian England, steeped with ouija boards and shaking crockery. Doctor Nathan is presented with a ‘possessed’ young girl. Can science cure her?
Daniella Westbrook: In Therapy Channel Five, 10pm Mixing the privileged intimacy of the therapy room – if it was wired by dodgy tabloids – with personal interviews, this documentary reveals the former child star bare. Daniella Westbrook has become better known for her demons than her soliloquies. She’s ready for help.
Murder, She Wrote ITV3, 7pm It’s tricky when you know a secret and you’re not supposed to tell anyone. Especially if it’s the true identity of a murderer. Some people just can’t keep that kind of information to themselves. The thing is, the person who knows the secret is a young priest and an innocent man is about to go down for the crime. Lawks!
