> Notes from a busy launch week, and the tower’s beautiful ‘breathing’ lighting effect

I

t has been 12 years in the making and this week British Airways i360 opened its doors to the public for the first time. What an incredible atmosphere for our first day. The sun shone, Brighton’s gay men's choir sang and all tickets were sold out so we were inundated with visitors. We had a few teething delays but most of our visitors were in good spirits and the feedback was incredible after their flight, all in the glare of the media. The media coverage this week has also been incredible. We made the lunchtime, 6pm and 10pm BBC national news including a live broadcast, appeared on the One Show on Monday night and have had coverage in all the national papers. We even had Heart FM broadcast their breakfast show live from the pod. Billboard hoardings have gone up across London and regional train stations so you cannot fail to notice we have arrived! During the evening the final touch to the lighting was added when our lighting got switched on for the first time. Wow: the pod looked like an incredible space age UFO reaching for the moon! The tower has a beautiful ‘breathing’ lighting effect gently brightening and fading at the average rate of a human being breathing at rest. And what colours? British Airways’ colours of red, white and blue. We can change the colour for special events and will be turning rainbow coloured for Pride. www.britishairwaysi360.com Twitter/Instagram: @ba_i360 Facebook: British Airways i360

> Patcham Peace Gardens

T

he most famous product of the 1924 British Empire Exhibition was a stadium, which became the most famous in the world – Wembley. Two lesserknown structures – a Tuscan pergola and Doric temple – found their way to Patcham. It was in 1926 that the Patcham bypass opened to take pressure away from Old London Road that runs through the heart of Patcham Village. Its creation, following the purchase of land from the Abergavenny Estate through the efforts of Sir Herbert Carden and others, left a long pointy tract between the two roads. It was Cllr Lee Wares, the representative for Patcham on Brighton & Hove City Council, who introduced me to it following the recent theft of a large chunk of its glorious Yorkstone path. The Gardens consist of a formal area at the southern tip with a simple grassed area to the north. The temple, which is decorated with fruit and figureheads, and the pergola, separate the two distinct spaces. At a glance, the figureheads appear gargoylelike but they are more than likely representations of the Green Man – an ancient symbol of the natural cycle. The Gardens are ultimately a memorial to the fallen of the Great War so it is quite right that they are maintained accordingly. Volunteer Pamela Hubbard from Patcham U3A showed me some of the challenges that are faced during sessions on the second and third Tuesday of the month. Just keeping the plants – which include St John’s worts, potentillas and salvias – under control is a labour of love. Adjoining the site is Patcham Memorial Hall, where U3A meetings take place. Its floor was relaid in the 1970s with Canadian maple from the Regent Ballroom – said to be the finest sprung floor in the world. www.buildingopinions.com LATEST HOMES | 5

THE ISSUE

Love thy neighbour

> Students need not be the enemy

S

o you live in area where there is a lot of student accommodation? Is it or are they a problem? If you answered yes then what are you doing about it? Moaning? Wrong answer. Okay, realistically there are students who live a wild life, partying all night long and being antisocial. But not all of them. When you look at a modern student's life then you will see that it's not all sex and drugs and rock and roll, far from it. It simply costs too much to be a student to waste that opportunity. Even if you are unlucky to have the noisy type there are lots of things you can do and the first is to get in touch with the local student accommodation officer, it should be fairly easy to find out who that is and they will advise you what can be done and if in fact they can intervene. You can also contact the managing agent. It is always in their interest to see that a property is in good hands and that their landlord's interests are being looked after. Our advice though is to get to know your neighbours and form a friendly and understanding bond, you don't have to love

thy neighbour but surely it is best to communicate on friendly terms from the start. You can start by offering them advice on things like refuse collections and recycling dates, point out the local shops and services and generally being that old fashioned thing that is neighbourly. Forming a dialogue will prompt them to let you know if they are planning a party, or taking in parcels for you. Who knows where it can lead, they may even be invaluable, trustworthy enough to consider as babysitters or pet feeders if you need to go away. At Latest Homes we like students, they form a vital cultural and economical part of how our city works so remember, embrace them, they are more likely to be geeks than freaks!

World War 2 engine

> City Wood Floors discover a Spitfire engine in Belgium, now on display in their showroom

A

1944 Rolls Royce engine has finally returned home and been reconditioned by City Wood Floors after an amazing journey. The engine was spotted by Wayne Gumbrell, whilst on a business trip in Belgium in the corner of a huge warehouse, in Gent. It was originally brought at an auction, in Belgium and the owner wanted to turn it into a table (like Top Gear) but it was far too big for their house. A very patriotic Mr Gumbrell argued victoriously that this was a piece of British History and it would have a better home in England, its rightful place and where it belongs. After weeks of negotiations and haggling over a price, the engine was collected 6 | LATEST HOMES

from Gent. Weighing over 1 tonne it was carefully repatriated to be restored back in Hove. Different variations of this engine were used in the famous Spitfire. Also, this was widely used for tanks such as the Centurion, Challenger and the Conqueror. As you might know the Spitfire played a major part in achieving victory in World War 2. It truly deserves its place as probably the most successful fighter design ever and certainly as the famous and charismatic of all time. This wonderful engine can be seen in our showroom in Hove. With local interest amongst engine enthusiasts, it was suggested that it might actually fire up and work. T

ll has come to a halt with the property purchase in Havana. This is due to reasons too profligate to mention, but include machismo, jealousy and an inability to tell the truth, with a bit of rank stupidity thrown in for good measure. It is nothing more than I expected, but is still rather frustrating. Worse still, is the fact that Cuba is now in economic crisis and the bank cannot – or more realistically will not – transfer the money back to my British account. I am not especially bothered about this as it is money that I borrowed from my friend Katy against our flat in Hastings. It therefore exists thus far solely in conversations about equity and in internet bank transfers. I am lucky to have it, even though I don't, if you see what I mean. Moreover, due to the plummeting pound, it has gone up by about 10 percent since it arrived in Cuba. The Cuban Boyfriend, who lives in Scandinavia, is more hopping mad about it than I am and I am thinking of banning the subject from our Skype conversations as it is a can of worms of catering proportions.... He is due over in person in a couple of weeks and the subject of my non existent money will be a closed one. Anyway, I'm currently way too busy selling inappropriate merchandise on the Pier to argue about money that doesn't exist. One of the most popular – yet to me the most odious – items we sell are hoodies emblazoned with the logo of a popular (disgusting, bland, taxavoiding) Coffee Shop brand. Or should I say bland? We sell literally hundreds of these items every week and I have to stop myself from asking each customer why they would wish to advertise a brand that is so selfserving and has added nothing to the world. I sound more bitter than the coffee itself. Extra sugar anyone?

his week’s photographs are of two buildings that were used by Brightonians for years, but have since been long forgotten. The first picture is of The Brighton Dispensary, situated on the corner of Queens Road and North Road. It served the town for years and in fact, still had a plaque on the wall when it was demolished which read: 'The Brighthelmston Dispensary'. The building had been on Queens Road from the mid 19th century and was replaced in the 1960s by New England House. The second building is on the top portion of Church Street, above Queens Road and features The Throat and Ear Hospital which abuts St Nicholas Churchyard. It was demolished in the 1980s to make way for a block of flats. It's odd but within spitting distance of both of these medical buildings, The Maternity Hospital in Buckingham Road, was also situated. (Used to be the original Brighton Grammar School) It is now in the process of being refurbished and converted. The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Dyke Road, has now been converted but still retains the original facade. So if you were unwell in those days, the station area was a good place to be. I'd like to say that these buildings were sold so that it would be easier to have all medical facilities under one roof... but I won't as it's just as chaotic now as it would have been then to visit the hospital! > Rough Sleeping Strategy – a pledge for the future

L

ife is hard on the streets. People who are rough sleeping are more vulnerable to crime and becoming seriously ill. A priority for Brighton and Hove City Council is to make sure no one has the need to sleep rough in the city by 2020. The council is working with partners across the city to help achieve this aim. Rough sleeping is a complex issue and no two people have the same circumstances. Poverty, ill health and unexpected life events are some of the factors which see people end up on the streets. We know the best chance of people moving away from the streets comes when professional services are involved. There’s no doubt national cuts have been harsh but the quality of services in our city remains high and literally saves lives. These services provide a lot of support for people living rough: including life skills, support with housing options, health care, computer access, job advice, friendship, meals and more specialist care as well. We live in a kind and generous city. The best way for residents to help people sleeping rough, is to let our street outreach workers know. You can do this through the Streetlink

“ People who are

rough sleeping are more vulnerable ”

number, (see bottom of page) call or use the phone app and outreach workers will be contacted to go out to find them. The longer someone stays on the street, the more likely they are to become trapped into that way of life. If an outreach worker can meet up with someone rough sleeping before they have been out too long the results can be dramatic. Donating to or volunteering with registered charities and local professional organisations is also a positive way to help. Small amounts of donations all add up and are more effective than giving hand outs on the street for many reasons. This also makes sure your time and money is used in the most effective way possible, helping to bring people into contact with the specialist organisations able to take immediate action. In the last six months, the council has produced the Rough

Sleeping Strategy 2016, combining information and expertise from local partners, organisations, residents, businesses and people who know what it is like to sleep rough. We now have an agreed way we can all work together to make a difference. No one person or agency can solve this alone. Building on the foundations we already have, we are now moving forward more united than ever before. Brighton and Hove has huge pressures on our limited housing and it’s far too easy to become at risk of homelessness. At the same time, the council is delivering the New Homes for Neighbourhoods programme, with more than 250 new homes. We’re also looking at joint ventures which could create more than 1,000 affordable homes in the city. The rough sleeping population is transient and, despite recent reports, has not grown in numbers in recent years. We are also an attractive city which many people have fond memories of and choose to return to when they feel they have nowhere else to go. Each year local support services work with more than 750 individuals sleeping rough in the city and about a third of these people are seen more than once. Many have a successful outcome, but we have a lot more to do to in the face of difficult challenges. We have pledged to continue this vital work to give people hope and help when they need it most. CITY PLANNER @Samerbagaeen

A

n analysis by national law firm, Irwin Mitchell and the Centre for Economic and Business Research, (CEBR) has found that Brighton is expected to see a significant slowdown in economic growth following the UK’s decision to leave the EU. ‘UK Powerhouse’ is an extensive business study produced regularly by Irwin Mitchell and CEBR. It looks at projections for GVA (gross value added) and job creation within 38 of the UK’s largest cities. It has found for example that London’s economy is due to be hit hardest in the short term following the EU referendum vote. Comparison of GVA growth figures for 12 months to Q1 2017 and Q1 2018 following the referendum find numbers substantially down. Others doing similar analyses are not so pessimistic. The Greater London Authority’s own research has looked at past, current, and prospective future investment projects and the possible direct consequences of Brexit. Questions asked included what might Brexit be like? And how would greater London respond to it? How would Brexit affect the benefits from prospective investment projects? These are all legitimate questions and all cities have a duty to be asking these. Brighton and Hove needs something similar and we hope that the Council is already hard at work. How, for example, would Brexit affect the BA i360 and visitor numbers (if anything)? Surprisingly, the GLA has found out that Brexit may actually benefit London by easing population growth and pressure on housing, reducing job growth somewhat less than population growth and therefore improving quality of life and ease gentrification for inner London areas. The GLA also found that transport and housing investments are little affected by Brexit. More importantly, the GLA is looking into this and commissioning the right studies. The idea for the BA i360 was conceived by architects and husband and wife team, David Marks and Julia Barfield, who famously originated and designed the London Eye. David revealed: “Built at the landward end of Brighton's historic West Pier, British Airways i360 is a modern day vertical pier that gives a new perspective on the city. Just as the West Pier invited Victorian society to 'walk on water'; so British Airways i360 invites visitors to 'walk on air’. The glass viewing pod, ten times the size of a London Eye capsule and capable of carrying up to 200 passengers, will slowly rise up a slender steel tower to a height of 450 feet to provide passengers with stunning views of Brighton and Hove and a beautiful panorama of the 10 | LATEST HOMES

The team behind British Airways i360 includes key people and firms who worked with the architects on the London Eye. Architect and British Airways i360 director Julia said: “British Airways i360 is a fantastic example of European cooperation. The team includes many key individuals and firms we worked with on the London Eye and it has been our privilege over the past twelve years to see the commitment, determination and enterprise with which they have turned the designs and plans into reality.” The couple have commended Eleanor Harris, CEO of BA i360, who has led the commercial aspects of the project and put together a great team who promoted this fantastic tourist attraction to the city and the watching world. Eleanor has embarked on the journey with David and Julia since its inception. She said: “British Airways i360 is a unique visitor attraction and a world’s first, which will cement Brighton's position as the UK's most popular seaside destination for international visitors. It is the world's tallest moving

observation tower, the world's first vertical cable car and holds the Guinness World Record for the world's most slender tower. Alongside our sponsors, British Airways, we are promoting Brighton around the globe. It has been the most incredibly exciting week, which I’ve been waiting for for ten years.” It’s been quite a journey and Latest TV were privileged to film all of the key construction milestones. We have observed this remarkable feat of architecture and engineering from the outset and are proud supporters. Not only will it boost our economy in terms of attracting new tourism to Brighton, we believe it will also inspire many other things. As visitors look out from the air over this amazing city, BA i360 will act as a catalyst for further inspiration, from poetry to art to other eureka moments. PERSONAL TOUCH

Just Streets Ahead

> An efficient, costeffective way to sell your home with an online/high street hybrid

J

ust Streets Ahead is your new Sussex based online estate agents, run by highly experienced High Street Estate Agents based in Sussex. The real difference is that the employees at Just Streets Ahead have faces, personalities and more importantly than that, you can have complete confidence that they will get the job done, because that’s what they do. Just Streets Ahead argue that some estate agents have become incredibly lazy over the last few years, have stopped being proactive and would rather sit in their air conditioned offices being reactive. They are in some way responsible for their own demise, as it is very evident the life expectancy of the high street agency is shorter than at any time before.

Pricing Structure Their pricing structure is very simple, instead of paying a percentage on the sale price of your property you pay a simple fixed marketing fee of £495* and then a completion fee of £500 when your property is sold. Just Streets Ahead have all of the advantages of a traditional High Street Estate Agent coupled with the price saving of an online agent... what are you waiting for? For more information visit www.juststreetsahead.com

Additional Brand Just Streets Ahead is the result of the very first High Street Estate Agency to launch an additional brand to their already existing successful, Hastings based Just Property. Just Streets Ahead offer a cost effective, simple, and highly efficient way of selling often the most expensive asset you own: your home. Their eyecatching state of the art website has just launched: www.juststreetsahead.com. Right from the first contact you get the feeling that you are in a safe and experienced pair of hands. Through their industry leading and fully responsive website you can make an appointment for Mr Priceit to come and value your property. Mr Snapit will come and take professional pictures of your property and ensure the property is available on Right Move, Zoopla and Prime Location to reach as many buyers as possible. Match Sellers To Buyers Mr Matchit will look at the Just Streets Ahead database of registered clients and do what he does best: find buyers for your property. After this Mr Fixer will make sure from the moment an offer is received to the completion of the sale, that you are kept up to date, provided clarity and any possible bumps in the road are ironed out. All of these stages are overseen by Mr Homes, who has been there, seen it all before and will make sure that your home, whether it be a house, flat or bungalow is priced, presented and advertised in the best way possible and that the conveyancing process is as smooth as possible for you, the client. 12 | LATEST HOMES

George Danahar, is a driven young individual, who prides himself on his ability to deliver great customer service. Despite being relatively fresh to the industry he has a fantastic understanding of the property world with his family being heavily linked and experienced in this sector, George has grown up to know what’s what in the Brighton and Hove property market, what he lacks in experience he more than makes up for with his local knowledge and passion for property.

“Having lived in the Sussex area all my life and worked in the Brighton & Hove property industry for over 4 years I have seen Leaders grow and prosper at a rapid pace and decided that I would very much like to be part of that success. I joined Leaders as part of the large lettings team but recently moved in to the sales department and am currently the Senior Sales Negotiator at the busy Western Road Branch. Over the past six months the sales department has gone from strength to strength and I am looking forward to being involved in what looks set to be a very busy year for Leaders.” Max Shave, Leaders 119120 Western Road, Brighton. John Hoole

“Chris Still and Richard Phillips are the Managing Directors, bringing with them over 30 years of combined experience. Our primary aim is to ensure the highest level of customer care whilst providing a professional and tailored service to suit each individual. “We ensure that your property gets full market coverage by advertising on websites that gain the most traffic, alongside local property magazines and eyecatching ‘For Sale’ boards. Not only is our aim to always achieve the best price for your property or find you that dream home, but we are equally focused on removing from you the stresses that can often come with moving house.” Phillips & Still, 112 Western Road, Brighton, BN1 2AB, 01273 771111, www.phillipsandstill.co.uk

Q Estate Agents have established an enviable reputation for delivering friendly, informed advice to their clients and achieving exceptional results through their striking approach to marketing. Sales Director James Beale has been at the forefront of this since joining Jim and Jose Quintana at Q three years ago. With over a decade’s experience in the local property market, James has gained a wealth of knowledge through working for a number of local estate agencies. James’ calm and reassuring manner means that his clients can enjoy the moving process with complete confidence they have chosen the right agency. Q Sales, 195 Lewes Road, Brighton. BN2 3LA, 01273 622664, www.qsalesandlettings.co.uk

“After just under 10 successful years, we have grown to become a firm favourite amongst sellers and buyers in this area. With Brighton & Hove being one of the most desirable places to live in the UK, the prospects are really looking very good. “Work with us in 2016 and you will find a company that is refreshingly professional, reliable and innovative, always striving to exceed expectations every single day. In a recent survey by The Property Ombudsman, 100% of those surveyed would recommend our services to friends and family. As I tell my colleagues, there is still always room for improvement!” John Hoole, 214 Dyke Road, Brighton, BN1 5AA, 01273 555115, www.johnhoole.co.uk
