> A gold BA i360 celebrates Team GB’s Olympic triumphs & lovely new restaurants open

T

o celebrate Team GB's greatest ever Olympic performance, we illuminated British Airways i360 gold on the night that our sponsor British Airways flew Team GB home. From take off until sunrise the world’s tallest moving observation tower glowed gold to celebrate the nation’s success whist the BA flight ‘BA2016’ from Rio carried a haul of 92 medals on board. Meanwhile we are continuing to have an incredible first summer and expect to welcome our 100,000th visitor through the door through the bank holiday weekend. A tip for locals wanting to avoid the crowds is to visit first thing in the morning when we open at 10am or else after 6pm. On Saturday 20th, we had our first major storm since we opened. The BA i360 operated all day and the flights were so smooth that you couldn't even feel the wind. We moved our security check and boarding inside our beach building so that our guests could stay out of the wind and rain, and lowered our parasols and flags. This week has also seen the opening of our restaurants: the beach side Belle Vue brasserie opened on Friday 19th and West Pier Tea Room (housed in one of the beautiful reproduction West Pier toll booths) on Kings Road. Both restaurants have lovely outdoor terraces. Afternoon teas are proving a big hit – the cakes are divine! www.britishairwaysi360.com Twitter/Instagram: @ba_i360 Facebook: British Airways i360

> Millenium Mills

F

irst Base recently burst onto the scene in Brighton with plans to redevelop the depressing Anston House site beside Preston Park. I recently visited for a tour of its centrepiece – one of the capital’s most intriguing derelict structures. Millenium Mills strikes quite a picture. It is surrounded simultaneously by several famous landmarks (the Thames Barrier, City Airport, ExCel Centre, Royal Victoria Dock) and acres of nothing. It is immediately identifiable as both forgotten and special. East London itself is famously industrial but not so well known is the Silvertown explosion of 1917 – one of the largest ever explosions in Britain – which saw 50 tonnes of TNT decimate people and property. A damaged older mill structure was replaced with a tenstorey concrete Art Deco flour mill in 1933. Unlike Anston House, which itself is an embarrassment, Millenium Mills will be staying when the site is redeveloped. It will take pride of place as an office block for startup companies alongside a new public square. Its interior is a dream for urban explorers and much of it will stay that way. I asked if asbestos had been found during the cleanup stages. I was told that 650 tonnes had so far been removed. This is a gigantic project. There are features everywhere within the building, and many other original items have been removed for safekeeping. Confusing though are the many missing floors. Only the most vital concrete beams have been left in place which makes the floors look like pillared walls. If it wasn’t for the tenstorey drops, it would be the perfect place for one serious party. www.buildingopinions.com LATEST HOMES | 5

THE ISSUE DI WHY?

> Should you leave it to the experts?

I

n a recent article we quoted a list of things that property seekers found a real turn off. Up there was dodgy or bodged DIY. You know the stuff, badly hung doors, flatpack furniture inexpertly assembled and wonky, shabby paint finishes and things indeed left unfinished. Are we all guilty of that misplaced pride that makes us feel that to confess that we are not up to a job makes us in some way inadequate. In men it could be damaged machismo, in women less so but it still exists. Okay, we all want to be able to tackle those little jobs around the home, if not to save face to save money. But there are times when the only solution is to call in an expert. Most of us can slap on a couple of coats of emulsion, but can we hang wallpaper? Or should we ask can you risk hanging an expensive feature wallpaper well enough for it to look really great? Possibly not. But there are things that we could all be prepared for, small jobs that require the minimum skill and that should offer at

least a little of the satisfaction of completing a successful DIY task – as long as you have the right tools for the job. Every home needs a basic tool kit, unless of course you are totally inept and then perhaps you should keep tools at a safe distance and a list of experts close to hand. Our simple list of DIY essentials would include a small selection of screwdrivers, flat and crosshead, a hammer, not too big, a measuring device and perhaps a spirit level. Add to this a sharp craft knife, maybe a multi purpose saw and perhaps an adjustable spanner of some kind and pliers. To complete the kit add some screws, nails and pins and a selection of fuses. Yes it soon mounts up and you have to consider that in your hands these simple tools could also lead to that scary bodged job. Be honest with yourself, should the "Do" in DIY be a "Don't".

ne of my favourite things to do once the weather starts getting warmer is to get out on the Downs with my bike. Quite often, I will combine cycling with business and go to Hastings on the train with my bike and the Hoover, clean the communal hallway then cycle back to Brighton. Yes, I might look like a total nutter with a Dyson sitting on the baby seat, but I don't really care what other people think. It seems that in The Cuban Boyfriend, I have found a kindred spirit, as he too likes nothing better than a cycling outing in our stunning Sussex countryside. Especially when it involves being with a cheerfully optimistic person like me. I seem to be able to combine a great deal of foolhardyness with not really knowing exactly where I'm going, which is not a marriage made in heaven when darkness creeps in, in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately, Cubans are a hardy bunch who have to remain optimistic and patient in the midst of various crises, so in him I have found the perfect person to lead boldly into disaster... The Cuban Boyfriend is himself an odd combination of rash decision maker and totally anal cycle enthusiast. I, for example had to curb my impulsive side (the impulse being to strangle him) when it took him nearly an hour to attach complex saddlebags (transported all the way from Scandinavia, no less) to the rear of his bike. The only problem with this was that, because of the time taken attaching the sodding things, we set off very late. Our lateness, combined with my typically optimistic approach to an impossibly lengthy route, led to us having to stay overnight at Cooden Beach. Pricey though it was, it was worth every penny, the only downside being that the saddlebags had to be detached for our overnight stay and, you've guessed it reattached with much faffing the following morning. I'm sticking with the rucksack on the baby seat.

s you have hopefully read before in this column, every two months, with my great friend Robert Jeeves (THE postcard man) of Step Back In Time in Queens Road, we hold an auction of anything and everything to do with Brighton, Hove and Sussex. The next auction is Tuesday 27 September, 7pm (viewing) for an 8pm start at the Aldrington Church Hall, Glebe Villas, just off New Church Road Hove. There are over 220 lots with a variety of items including postcards, photos, books, theatre programmes and all sorts of ephemera. The photo to the right is a very rare postcard of Giggins the Bakers at their Brighton branch in the 1920s at 30 Gloucester Road, and is on the corner of Upper Gardner Street. It's always good to get a North Laine shop scene as they are unusual and should attract lots of bids with a guide price of approx £30... but who knows? The photo at the top of the column is a lot that I was asked to sell as a direct result of one of my previous columns’ photo of the Brighthelmston Dispensary in Queens Road, which was demolished in the early 1970s. It is the original brass plaque that appeared on the front entrance of the building and weighs a ton, but is a oneoff original, a piece of local history unseen for years and forgotten about. I am expecting in excess of £150 as there is not another one that I know of in existence. Now I must say that the prices for items in the sale start from as little as £2 so if you would like a copy of the catalogue email me and I will send you a copy. Also if you think you have something unique for an auction please let me know as its great fun to see new and unusual items. PROJECT BRIGHTON > Charity event at Grosvenor Casino

B

C Beauty Training (BCBT) is hosting a big beauty charity event at The Grosvenor Casino, on Saturday, 1 October, starting at 10am. The two charities that are being sponsored are Chestnut Tree House and The Martlets Hospice. The reason these two charities have been chosen is because everyone has been affected by the loss of someone close to them, whether it is someone young or old. Both of these charities carry out marvellous work.

They both offer support for the whole family, including psychological and bereavement support, end of life and short break care and sibling support, assessment, advice and information for children and young adults with lifelimiting or lifethreatening conditions 24 hours per day. Specialist short breaks, emergency and end of life care is provided at both charities 24 hours per day, and support for the entire family following diagnosis, plus hospice at home and community care services for children and families in their own homes throughout East and West Sussex and South East Hampshire. Bereavement support includes befriending, counselling and spiritual care. Support and advice on the transition from paediatric palliative care services to adult services is provided. They are both great charities and rely very much on donations and fundraising events.

“ The reason we have chosen these two charities is because everyone has been affected by the loss of someone close to them ” On the day of the event, the casino will be giving away a free spin on the roulette wheel for everyone who attends, they can win up to £10, which they can either keep or donate it to the charities. There will also be a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses, with all proceeds going to the charities. Not only that, each therapist and stall holder has donated £20 for their table which will also go directly to the charities. The casino is kindly printing out 1,000 leaflets to be given out to raise awareness of the event. The event is not only for the two charities, it is also for BCBT’s students to help them promote themselves and to hopefully gain clients. BCBT are also helping the Casino by 8 | LATEST HOMES

introducing possible new members. The treatments the students will be performing are manicure, gel polish manicures, facials, tanning, lashes and brows, waxing, Swedish massage, Indian head massage and Reflexology. The student will have time slots where they can book clients in and carry out the treatment at a reduced cost. There will also be stall holders there who will be selling beauty products, jewellery, handbags, and candles, to name but a few. Again these stall holders will be able to promote themselves and maybe able to sign up ongoing clients.

“ There will also be a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses ” This will be a fantastic event and it will feel very rewarding when BCBT finally hand over the cheque to the two charities, knowing that we will be helping families during a time of great need. www.chestnuttreehouse.org.uk www.themartlets.org.uk

CITY PLANNER > Samer Bagaeen MRTPI FRICS Build up or build out?

T

he issue of urban density has been the subject of recent debate. I am spending a few days in Ramallah in Palestine and it’s funny how two cities that are different in so many ways can share the same concerns about building heights and building density. One key difference between Ramallah and Brighton is that the former needs to build horizontally so that is stakes a claim to territory in a conflict area and the latter knows it needs to build vertically but does not do so because of pressures from all sorts of corners. In Brighton, any largescale, big impact development should in all likelihood be a skyscraper in order to meet housing demand. Here, and in other smaller cities in England, proposals like this can still appear as fairly extreme, and their approval contentious. In Cardiff, a new 42storey, 132m high building of affordable student accommodation, and at just under half the height of London’s Shard, seems small when compared to the world’s skyscrapers. Nonetheless, developments like this are big news for the smaller cities outside London. Unlike London and Brighton, cities such as Cardiff or Sheffield are not short of space and can accommodate the needed housing within the city boundary without going up. With clever design, a successful density level can be achieved where people still find peace, a place where they can retreat from the stress of everyday life and find a sense of identity and community belonging. So, do we build up or build out? Recent schemes by Alison Brooks Architects in Cambridge show that models of medium density are not incompatible with access to green space. www.samerbagaeen.com

ASTUTE APPOINTMENT

> Sussex estate agent privileged to represent county at Association of Residential Letting Agents

A

Chichesterbased estate agent is honoured to have been reappointed as the Association of Residential Letting Agents’ (ARLA’s) representative for Sussex for a second three year term. Ian Colban, branch manager at Leaders in Chichester, will resume the prestigious role this month. He will act as a point of contact for all ARLAregistered agents across the county and represent them at the regulatory body’s meetings and conferences. Ian explains: “I am extremely proud to once again serve as ARLA’s representative for Sussex. This allows me to influence and protect regulation of the local lettings market and to help fellow registered agents to achieve the highest standards. “The lettings industry is still unregulated which means that anyone could set up an agency with no qualifications or experience. ARLA firmly believes that the industry should be regulated and works closely with the government and other industry bodies to lobby the relevant ministers and influence housing policy.

“ARLA agents adhere to a strict code of practice as laid down by the Department of Communities and local government which ensures that clients’ money is properly protected at all times and that all legislation relating to the industry is properly adhered to. ARLA helps to ensure that member agents are working in the best interests of both landlords and tenants, which I believe is crucial at all times. Its regulations are always drawn up with both parties in mind. “Our branch in Chichester is well versed in delivering excellent customer service that is based on professionalism, knowledge and experience and I am committed to ensuring all ARLA agents act in a similar way.” As part of Ian’s role, he provides a regular full roundup of developments in Sussex for coverage in the Property Professional magazine, published by the National Federation of Property Professionals. Leaders and ARLA have a long history dating back more than 30 years. The founder of Leaders in 1983, Neville Lee OBE, was also the cofounder of ARLA and the company has been a member of the regulatory body ever since. For more information on selling, letting, buying or renting a property please contact your local Leaders branch. www.leaders.co.uk

MOULD PRESENTS A HEALTH HAZARD

T

he NHS, the Department of Health and the World Health Organisation all regard exposure to excessive mould as a threat to health. That’s why the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) has classified mould as a Category 1 health hazard. Living with mould can have a detrimental effect on one’s health which is why mould problems should be dealt with quickly and effectively. Paint isn’t your solution As tempting as it may be, heading for the mouldy wall with a bucket of paint and a brush at hand isn’t going to solve the problem. In actual fact, painting over existing mould won’t kill it. Painting over the mould is simply a waste of time and money, as mould will continue to grow, resulting in the continuous dispersion of mould spores. Even the thickest coats of paint won’t mask your mould trouble. Unless you invest in a proper and professional mould removal procedure, the mould will only just continue to grow! Out with the mould! MOULD SOLUTIONS specialise in mould removal, prevention and ventilation solutions. They can identify the cause, treat the mould and give you advice on how to keep you homes healthy and mould free. For more information call MOULD SOLUTIONS on 01273 589 689 or visit mouldsolutions.co.uk
