righton and Hove is the spiritual home of buying local. We all love our local produce, love the fact that we celebrate Sussex produce, the sparkling wines, beautiful beef and lamb and rapeseed oil. When it comes to dining out we favour those restaurants that join in this joy of local.
“ We want to help you to live here ” Fifteen years ago when we launched Latest Homes it seemed that the love of local was not restricted to food and drink, far from it. When it came to buying and selling property local and independent was the people choice. In a way those local and independent agents became the backbone of this magazine – and they remain so to this day. But somewhere along the way the internet became the place to market your home for sale or to find your new home. It was new, it was modern, it was rammed full of property and it could be seen globally. All good points and the reason why we launched our own property portal, latesthomes.co.uk, which to this day has more local properties on it than any other site. And in that lies one of the key clues, yes the word local, we all love it. But it's more than that, of course it is. Local is great but we are also seeing that what we want is a more personal service. We want to talk to a human being and we want to do that face to face. Agents want to do that too, they want to meet their clients, to be able to get a clear and accurate picture of what kind of home you are looking for and find the right property for you. They have local knowledge that a website can only imitate and they have human skills too. Latest Homes is committed to helping you to buy or sell homes and the pages of the magazine and our websites are full of great property and professional advice and now every property that you find there will also be marketed through social media to a massive audience. Latest Homes, we want to help you to live here!

MOULD SOLUTIONS
T
he NHS, the Department of Health and the World Health Organisation all regard exposure to excessive mould as a threat to health. That’s why the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) has classified mould as a Category 1 health hazard. Living with mould can have a detrimental effect on one’s health which is why mould problems should be dealt with quickly and effectively. Paint isn’t your solution As tempting as it may be, heading for the mouldy wall with a bucket of paint and a brush at hand isn’t going to solve the problem. In actual fact, painting over existing mould won’t kill it. Painting over the mould is simply a waste of time and money, as mould will continue to grow, resulting in the continuous dispersion of mould spores. Even the thickest coats of paint won’t mask your mould trouble. Unless you invest in a proper and professional mould removal procedure, the mould will only just continue to grow! Out with the mould! MOULD SOLUTIONS specialise in mould removal, prevention and ventilation solutions. They can identify the cause, treat the mould and give you advice on how to keep you homes healthy and mould free. RENT BOOK TALES The Landlady
NOW & THEN Andy Garth
> A trip down memory lane
> November auction
I
have now been writing this column for 16 years, since before The Small Daughter was even born. It is currently a subject very close to home because I am finally beginning work on a book of collected Landlady columns from years gone by. I am doing this because many friends have asked me to do so and my children are keen to read about their childhood, even if it is through my slightly skewed view. Because I have been writing it for so long, gathering said columns is trickier than I first imagined as many were written on a computer so old that it virtually ran on paraffin. Others were written on The Very Ex Boyfriend’s computer Clive, which even when new in 2003, sounded like a wheezing elderly distance runner when you started it up. Then there were the years of columns written on the Toshiba, which passed away in 2010, superseded by the Acer, which died earlier this year. The only thing I have is a cardboard file full of the hard copies of my columns and it is these that I have been rereading in preparation for reentering into my shiny new computer.
“ Written on The Very Ex Boyfriend’s computer Clive ” So far, it has been a very enjoyable task revisiting the ups and downs of my former life, and I am especially loving reading about how vile my children were when they were younger. Not The Small Daughter, as she was then a cute (yet often destructive) baby, who is only moving into the realms of vileness now. Tales of The Big Son and The Big Daughter as they were in their teenage personas have already had me howling with laughter. The Big Son, who is now one of the most successful and wise people I know, was an absolute arse when he was younger, which made for an unhappy pairing with The Big Daughter who was a sulky, spiteful ice queen hell bent on destroying her brother. They now get along like a house on fire and I’m sure they’ll think my columns are fantasy. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

t's the last auction of the year which I hold jointly with Mr Postcard (Robert Jeeves of Step Back In Time in Queens Road) and the interest has been incredible. We have 254 lots to offer for sale on Tuesday 22 November at Aldrington Church Hall, Glebe Villas, Hove, with viewing from 6.30pm and the actual sale starting at 8pm. We have now offered over 1,000 lots this year of anything and everything to do with Brighton, Hove and Sussex from books, prints, photos and posters to postcards, ephemera and brass plaques.
“ The postcards are fun joke cards ” The prices range from £2 to £500 and we have a lot of fun doing it and only charge 10 per cent commission for sellers and buyers. Come along or email me at brightonandhovestuff@gmail.com for a catalogue. Anyway, briefly onto a couple of bits from the sale. Firstly a great view of life on the seafront in the 1950s with serious buskers playing for their money on Kings Road. A great shot of social history... but you wouldn't stand as close to the road these days, or in fact try and get your music heard. Too dangerous and too noisy with the traffic. Guide for this one is £8. The next couple of postcards are completely bananas and fun advertising or joke cards for Cricket at Sussex circa 1910, and I'm really not sure of the thought process behind the idea but – hey – each to their own! Guide on this lot is £12. If you want any more info please let me know. Brighton and Hove Stuff, 28 Western Road, Hove Brightonandhovestuff@gmail.com

PROJECT BRIGHTON > Sarah Springford, Director of Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce, discusses her win at Brighton and Hove Business Awards
A
few months ago we did a personality test with the Chamber team. It was the Myers Briggs Indicator. I’ve done it before in previous jobs and found it really interesting and useful. We enlisted the help of Susan Carroll from Scala Advance. Susan works with lots of big and small companies across the UK and beyond. She’s also been a member of the Chamber for a couple of years now and has facilitated sessions with our Board so she knows how the Chamber works, about our ethos and what we want to achieve – our vision.
“ When I heard my name announced
as this year’s Outstanding Brightonian, my first thought was that I’m a behind the scenes person ” ‘Doing’ Myers Briggs helps you understand how you and your team work best, how you take in information and enables you to work to each others’ strengths. One of the questions on the MBTI online questionnaire was about what you feel about being noticed. It got me thinking about how we like to be rewarded and what being noticed means to different people. When I heard my name announced at the Brighton and Hove Business Awards on the 14th of September, as this year’s Outstanding Brightonian, my first thought was that I’m a behind the scenes person, not a get up on the stage and talk to the 300 strong crowd person. Fortunately I had recently attended one of Steve Bustin’s brilliant presentation skills courses and I remembered him talking about the importance of working out what the audience is interested in, and the message you want to get across, and I managed to say something. But it dawned on me that whilst the big moment on the night was exciting and scary all at the same time, this was not actually the nub of being awarded the accolade. 8 | LATEST HOMES
One of the reasons given by the judges for this year’s choice was the success of the Brighton and Hove Living Wage campaign run by Brighton Chamber. This started over four years ago after a commission organised by Bill Randall and chaired by the then President of the Chamber, Julia Chanteray, agreed that Brighton and Hove should have a living wage campaign, and that it would be led by the Chamber. It’s the only businessled campaign that I’ve heard about. Last week the 300th employee signed up to the campaign: Flowers Unlimited. Running excellent events for our members is what drives us and takes 75% of our time and resources. The Brighton Summit – our big annual conference – was on 14th October this year and it was a big success. It was sold out with over 300 businesses attending and was like no other business event I’ve been too. The energy was palpable, the feedback has been fantastic, Twitter went mad! The secret behind what we can achieve is that we have a huge group of 60 or so business people who volunteer their skills, help and ideas to make things happen. By 7.30am on the morning of the Summit, The Clarendon Centre was buzzing with volunteers ready to buddy speakers, run sessions, write blogs, make videos – that’s what I love best about being part of Brighton Chamber. Winning an award is good for businesses, and since the Outstanding Brightonian we’ve had lots of new members joining, lots of interest in what we do, and lots of people getting in touch to say well done. I think it’s brilliant that a Chamber of Commerce is recognised in this way by the Business Community. To find out more about Brighton Chamber see www.businessinbrighton.org.uk

“
I can’t recommend HW enough. Moving house after 20 years was a very stressful experience for me and HW were supportive, friendly and professional throughout. They found a buyer quickly, and always replied to phone calls and emails very promptly with a personal touch. Company's like these can really change the negative image that estate agents can have and make them a pleasure to do business with. A very big thank you.” Mrs S Greehalgh
