t's almost December and pretty soon, if you haven't already put those decorations up, you may well be decking your halls with boughs of holly. I love Christmas decorations, the tree and the lights, the sparkle of glass baubles and tinsel and the sweet smell of warm pine. Homes never look nicer in my book.
“ We’re not in the bah humbug camp ” But do they look right for selling? We rattle on here about cleaning up, about trying away clutter and making space. Well the insertion of a six foot Douglas fir in your sitting room is hardly going to achieve that is it? So what is the answer? Well we’re not in the bah humbug camp here that's for sure. Far from! No, we say go for it, deck those halls, dress that tree and sparkle – and why? The answer is simple, a home filled with festive cheer is a home filled with love. What could be more attractive than that? And let's face it, if you are in the market to view and buy property at this time of year then surely this will be what you expect to find. I would go the whole way, well perhaps not the WHOLE way, keep it tidy of course and focused too, concentrate that festive decor into one or two displays, a tree, a wreath, a poinsettia if you must! To that end though, go mad with Christmas smells, the spice of mulled wine, the buttery waft of hot mince pies and the gentle sounds of festive music if that's your thing. Go for Christmas and share the joy and if in doubt ask your agent for their advice, after all, they are the property specialists and know their market.

is the season... to be an elf! Sussex based children's charity Rockinghorse is asking supporters to dress in red and green on Friday 9 December for their annual 'Dress Yourself as an Elf' day.
“ Raised over £10,000 to help make life better for sick children ” Local schools, businesses, community groups and individuals are being encouraged to dress as elves and donate £1. The festive
dressdown day will be raising money towards the charity's 50th year appeal; Sussex Giving for Sussex Children. Bestknown as the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) in Brighton, Rockinghorse recently launched its plans for their Golden Jubilee. They aim to raise £500,000 worth of funding in 2017 to be split between 10 children’s centres and paediatric services in Sussex. Last year, hundreds of people got involved in the festivities and raised over £10,000 to help make life better for sick children in Sussex. Even the Brighton Wheel showed their support by lighting red and green to mark the occasion. Traffic on Rightmove increased 195% between Christmas Day and the first working day of the New Year and on Zoopla property searches double over Christmas and New Year.

or Snowdog fans it’s time to say goodbye to the much loved Snowdogs by the Sea art trail, as the pack of 44 giant sculptures and their litter of 22 Snowpups, come together for a festive extravaganza to celebrate the end of the magical event. Organisers say the event will be packed with festive surprises and it’s a chance for dog lovers to grab one last selfie with the canines before the Snowdogs go under the hammer to raise funds for Martlets Hospice.

couple of days after arriving back from Turkey, The Small Daughter, Big Son and I set off for five days in New York City. Exhausting though the transition between time zones was, it was the best fun ever, as our initial reason for going was to surprise The Big Daughter’s Boyfriend, who was already out there with The Big Daughter, celebrating his 30th birthday. It had been a very difficult secret to keep for virtually the whole of 2016, but the look on his face when we suddenly appeared in a bar was well worth the effort. Ahhhhh... bless. On our arrival, The Big Son and I were already slightly squiffy due to the overgenerous pouring of the cabin crew and we’d been told off for making too much noise on the plane, which has happened to me more times than I care to remember. I also had my usual languagebarrier misunderstanding with the Homeland Security guard in the airport and when I was asked ‘any drugs or alcohol?’, I said ‘Yes please’. Ooops.
“ New York City was the perfect place for an old person (i.e. me) to live ” Still, we arrived in one piece and even The Small Daughter managed to stay awake for long enough to surprise The Birthday Boy. New York hasn’t changed much since I was there a couple of years ago, but it is now hideously expensive, due to the postBrexit pound. One swanky meal we went for cost the best part of £500, but The Big Son declared it the best meal he’d ever had in his life, so I guess it was worth it. While I was there, I decided that New York City was the perfect place for an old person (i.e. me) to live, as everyone seems to be out and about all the time and no one sits at home isolated in front of the electric fire. I even went as far as looking at houses on the internet and discovered that to afford the equivalent of my Brighton house in Manhattan, I would need around $15,000,000, which at the moment is basically £15,000,000. The good news is that, if I sold two of my flats in Brighton, I would be able to afford a studio flat in Greenwich Village. Maybe I’ll wait until the pound goes back up, although The Small Daughter is already looking at the prospectus for New York University.... LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
he last auction of the year was a great success and as usual prices ranged from £2 to just over £100 and I have included the two top sellers in this week’s article. The first is a great photo taken from just outside the side gates of the Engineerium in Hove looking east towards what is now the north end of Hove Park and Woodland Drive, in about 1910 before any building was even considered and it was all farmland. The price paid for this was £60 which was a great price for a one off view. The second photo is a great example of the interest in all things collectible when it comes to Brighton and Hove Albion and football in general. Last week I included a similar styled card relating to Sussex Cricket and as predicted that sold for £12, now the football one was a bun fight in auction terms and we even had a bid from an expat Albion supporter from Thailand. The bidding started at £28 and eventually sold for £105 which was amazing for a single postcard from the early 20th century in cartoon form rather than your usual photo.
“ The football one was a bun fight ” Please check anything you might have tucked away in drawers or boxes at home that has anything to do with Brighton, Hove or Sussex that looks unusual or old as you never know, it may be worth a few pounds. Our next auction is now not until March 2017 but with this year’s success at the five auctions we held, we are already collecting for March and we would be happy to look at anything you might have.
