righton has a history of three iconic piers: the Chain Pier (1823 1896), the West Pier (1866 1975) and the Palace Pier (currently Brighton Pier and soon to be Brighton Palace Pier) (1899 still going strong). I spent a lovely afternoon last week having been invited by Anne Martin to tea on the Palace Pier, and even in the bleak midwinter, a walk on the pier and some tea and cake is still a magical and romantic experience. Many years ago, I wrote a song to Brighton to capture this magic and romance, which we later used as the theme tune for our TV channel. Brighton Lights "I wasn't born here but I was born to be here In between The Village and The Palace Pier Nothing here is quite like what it seems Two hundred thousand people but a million dreams” I guess Luke Johnson who bought the pier recently must feel like us Brightonians who love the pier! And I'm so glad that Luke and Anne have brought it back as The Palace Pier, well Brighton Palace Pier! Even better. Recently Latest TV made a documentary about the history of the West Pier, from the ingenious designs of engineer, Eugenius Birch. We charted its fabled history, from its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s, to its status as the ultimate film location for O What a Lovely War, and Carry On Girls, to the devastating fires and storms that ravaged and ultimately destroyed it, despite the heroic efforts of people to save the pier.
“ Here’s to those who’ve made Brighton peerlessly full of piers ” The West Pier location has had a recent saviour with the majestic British Airways i360 created by remarkable architect husband and wife team, David Marks and Julia Barfield. The BAi360 rises like a phoenix from the ashes of the old pier. It was a real privilege for our crew to go up in the BAi360 with Leonard Goldman who celebrated his 100th birthday on top of the BAi360 whilst reminiscing about the fun he had on the West Pier playing the famous stockbroker machines. A few weeks ago I went on the refurbished Eastbourne Pier. It also has a new name. It had gold everywhere. I had tea with the owner who arrived in a gold car with golden diamond rings on every finger, that matched the shining golden chandeliers in his tea room. He called himself The Sheikh. And on this pier there's a refurbished old Camera Obscura. Where else would this appear but a pier? As I left after another great tea and cake and fresh air filled afternoon I saw the sign: “Thank you for visiting Sheikh's Pier.” Is it mad inventors who make the piers or is it the piers that make people go a bit crazy. Whatever, I love them. So here's to Eugenius Birch and all those who’ve made Brighton peerlessly full of piers. ince the start of this column last year Project Brighton has featured a great many initiatives in and around the city, but funnily enough never one of our own. Latest, in its many forms, has been around for years. Most people will be aware of the magazines, some will even remember The Punter from which it sprang and others will know that, under our managing director Bill Smith we were heavily involved in the launch of Surf FM which went on to become the very successful Juice radio station. We have created awards, events, music, films, books, magazines of course and most recently Latest TV. If this is not a true manifestation of Project Brighton then I don't know what is. Which leads me to our most current project and in my mind most exciting. I might be biased but that's how it is. When Bill Smith told me that he wanted to launch a new channel within Latest TV that would be aimed at the city's LGBT population I was immediately captivated by the concept and eager to be very involved. As a gay man I should tell you that Bill, who is not, has always been supportive of me but more importantly of what is going on in Brighton's gay scene. He is a solid supporter of all kinds of humanitarian causes and especially issues of equality, not just locally but globally. LGBT+ TV will champion those causes and expose inequalities wherever it can. The channel will be led by my friend and colleague Sophie Cook. Sophie is an extraordinarily passionate woman, a brilliant photographer who has not only worked in the world of music but is also the only trans woman to work in Premier League football in her role as team photographer at AFC Bournemouth. Sophie is heading up the channel, will be making documentaries as well as news stories, and has relaunched her ‘Beyond The Rainbow’ magazine format programme.I have already started to make a new

chat show AK Soufflè, and the first episode with guests James Ledward, G Scene editor and political commentator and activist and chanteuse and choir mistress Aneesa Chaudhry, has already been screened – and there are lots of amazing guest already lined up for the future.
“ A conduit to fight for worthy causes ” We also have amazing films to screen, documentaries and dramas which are being curated by Prof Dr Rainer Schulze, (Professor (em) Modern European History, Department of History and Human Rights Centre, University of Essex). There will be weekly looks at global and local issues in our new LGBT+ versions of The Papers and The Vote, already popular viewing on the channel, and broadcast veteran and well known character on the city's gay scene Mike Mendoza will continue to be involved in producing and presenting these. Latest LGBT+ is an exciting new development for us all. I love the fact that I can use the channel to celebrate being gay and all the fun and entertaining things that includes but most importantly use it as a conduit to fight for worthy causes – and I am sure that all my colleagues see this opportunity in the same way. But it's not just about us, we want to be an all embracing channel, one that invites you to join in and fight for a real equality whilst having fun along the way. I
t is often quoted and is actually true, that you could drink in a different pub every day of the year and some, and with this in mind I found two great photos from the 1930s of two proper boozers. The first was The Vulcan in Edward St on the corner of Grosvenor Street, a very local pub in an area that was demolished in the ‘30s as being Brighton's slums... now I've had people in their eighties who as kids were bought up around this area and will fight tooth and nail to dispel that label. They tell me that the houses they lived in were not slums, they were cleaned and house proud family's lookd after them... but they were substandard with regards to the facilities and amenities available to them, so it was deemed more economic to knock them down rather than repair. Anyway, if you look closely you can see the Vulcan was boarded up ready to be flattened. The second picture is of a wine merchants with the great name of Lovibonds with the Norfolk Arms next door but one, situated on the corner of Grand Parade and Carlton Hill. These were also knocked down in the 1930s, but this time replaced by another pub which until the 1990s was still known as the Norfolk Arms and after a few dodgy name changes is now the bustling BrewDog.
