LATEST BILL The plus side of Doris Day

M

y sister was in Aldi putting her trolley away in the midst of the storm on Doris Day, an unfair name as Doris Day is such a heartwarming singer and not stormy at all! A gust of wind whistled up the alleyway and like Biggles, her scarf shot out at 90 degrees from her neck and smacked the lady next to her in the face. “Oh my God, I'm so sorry” my sister said. "Never mind" the lady replied, "it's the weather. There's only one thing to do on a day like today, go home and watch a film." “Oh and where do you watch that?” “Oh we're really lucky. Our local TV channel shows great films every day.” That was Latest TV she was talking about and it's nice when people say nice things about you! Later that day I was at David Bramwell's weird and wonderful Catalyst Club and I overheard the woman next to me saying she watched Latest TV more than any of the other channels, because it's more relevant to her. She wants to get the kids to whom she teaches writing onto TV to perform their poems. And guess what, she will! Recently at Latest we've improved our social media and we now get to around 65,000 people with our tweets and posts daily. We try and inform all our Brighton community on @latestbrighton everything that's worth knowing about Brighton. So all the best events to go to, all the nicest things you can do in this great city of ours and all the best houses and flats you can buy or let in Sussex. And if we can do anything to help make sure everybody gets to have a home, we will. Everyone deserves that security!

all me old but... I learnt a great deal of stuff about Brighton and Hove by reading many of the great and interesting books written about our fair town (city to some). So this week at a local auctioneers they were selling a collection of approximately 50 books just on Brighton and Hove's rich history by various authors on various subjects providing in­depth facts, figures, events, anecdotes, and the why and wherefore of all you see in the city. But perhaps most of all the benefit of actually reading a real life book!

As much as it's easy to attack your PC or tablet, I still feel that a book is more permanent and enjoyable. Now I may seemed to have waffled but the reason I felt the need to do this is the small price I had to pay for this collection: a paltry £90 which at less than £2 a book is an absolute bargain. It proves that attending auctions is not all about the mega buck sales you see on the television but about normal people also being able to get involved. Obviously the books purchased will all be on sale in the shop but as my purchases were such good value, my sale prices can also be reasonable. orld Book Day is a global celebration of reading that is well highlighted in every librarian's calendar, and here at Brighton & Hove Libraries it's a particularly special date as it marks the anniversary of the opening of our flagship branch in the heart of the city's North Laine. Since its doors first opened in March 2005, Jubilee Library has been in the top five most visited libraries in the UK with over 1 million visits a year. The building itself has won its own accolades for architecture and sustainable design – its carbon emissions are only 50% of conventional buildings and the toilets are flushed with rainwater collected from the roof.

This year, World Book Day falls on Thursday 2nd March and the occasion provides library members old and new with the opportunity to celebrate their local libraries and the dedicated staff that run them. It is not only an opportunity to reflect on the joy of reading, but also the importance of these free, safe spaces at the heart of communities. On World Book Day 2017 we'll be hosting workshops for selected primary school classes to launch Young City Reads – Brighton & Hove's 'big read' for children, which sees school classes across the city reading the same book at the same time to form a giant book group. We'll also be providing World Book Day activity sheets for families after school so do pop in to your local branch and say hello. Our libraries are free to join – anyone can join – and we're committed to ensuring you have access to books that you'll love, and the information that you need.
