here's so much in Brighton to do that even after many years I can always find something or somewhere new. Take for instance The Purple Playhouse Theatre, a wonderful theatre off Seven Dials. It's part of the Grace Eyre charity building in Montefiore Road but it's Credit: Oleg Katchinski a proper theatre and for me it was like walking into The Maly Theatre in Moscow. It was packed – as everyone came out of the cold in Moscow coats and hats they were talking animatedly in Russian. I've always shied away from reading Lolita and I don't think you could Credit: Oleg Katchinski easily write such a book today. But I'd seen one of the actors’ work before and I thought I'll know all about the book if I go. Plus it sounded Nabokov authentic as it was in Russian with subtitles. And what can I say? It was riveting. It felt 100 per cent real in Russian and the director, staging and actors could have come straight from the Maly. Indeed, it should be on the Maly stage. Victor Sobchak's creation (his adapted play) is marvellous. Oleg Hill played the obsessed, lustful Humbert with great (but evil) charm. I almost liked him! Yana Lyapunova gave Lolita the verve, humour and sheer fun of teenage girls and their teenage kicks but made it unique.

It would be easy to create an over the top, desperate to have Humbert herself mum, but Elena gave us the perfect balance of sexiness and normal motherly love. Aleksey Averkin played Lolita's real love interests – her drama teacher and her husband Rob – and you could easily see why Lolita fell for him! Ryanski Goslingovich he could be named! I'm glad I went. I can talk knowledgeably about Nabokov without reading the book, and I got to discover one of the hidden gems of Brighton and meet and later eat, drink and have lots of fun with my new Russian friends! CAR QUIDS > Car owners in Brighton find ingenious way to save money on their journeys
A
company which helps car owners combat rising motoring costs by paying them to display adverts on their car is launching in Brighton at the beginning of March. Anyone with a car can sign up to Car Quids by completing a short registration form on their website. They are then matched with a brand that wants to advertise on their car. The first adverts in Brighton will feature financial technology service PensionBee, a company that allows you to combine all your pensions into a single, good value online plan.

Car Quids was the idea of a recent graduate, who was out enjoying a pub lunch in London and looking at passing taxis. Realising how many taxis carried advertisements, he was inspired to try this with privately owned vehicles and put corporate marketing budgets into the pockets of individuals. nglish Tourism Week is an annual nationwide campaign, organised by VisitBritain to celebrate tourism in England and highlight the value of tourism to our economy. The visitor economy is worth £106bn a year to England – it supports thousands of businesses and is the third largest employer, supporting 2.6 million jobs. The tourism sector touches everyone – visitors, residents, businesses, employees, and is a major employer of school leavers and young people. This year Brighton and Hove Tourism Alliance has teamed up with VisitBrighton to help promote and celebrate English Tourism Week in Brighton & Hove.

Also working with us are Brilliant Brighton (BID), Brighton & Hove Buses, Brighton Marina, Brighton Palace Pier, Brighton & Hove Hotels Association, Brighton & Hove Restaurant Association, Churchill Square and many others – making it a truly citywide collaboration! This is the first year Brighton & Hove has collectively participated in the ETW campaign and the decision to do was only taken towards the end of January – so it's very much all hands on deck now! We are lucky to have use of the very colourful Brighton & Hove Sightseeing buses which have been 'donated' by Brighton and Hove Buses especially for English Tourism Week – these will be used as stationary information 'hubs' and also entertainment space. I
have never been a big fan of Scandinavia. I have to admit that my opinion has been largely shaped by a longago trip to Copenhagen, where I had a few runins with uptight people and was horrified that a pint of beer, that cost £5 even 12 years ago, mainly consisted of froth. My recent reception in another Scandinavian country didn’t go too well either. I was there only overnight to visit The Cuban Boyfriend in a rather clandestine manner. I rarely take much luggage with me on a twoweek trip, so this time only had my

Perhaps my porkpie aroused suspicion – it caused problems at Gatwick as it apparently looked like a pot of cream on the Xray. As I went through customs, I was stopped by an ununiformed lady, who politely asked if she could search my bag. I politely followed her, clutching my pork pie for dear life. My politeness ran out when she started asking me what I thought were too many searching questions. As she rifled through my bags, she asked why I was only visiting for one night. I in turn asked if this was illegal, thus not really answering. The true answer was, of course a little rude. She then flicked through my embarrassingly full passport and asked why I travelled so much. ‘Because I can’, was my non committal reply. Unfortunately, because it was so hot in the airport – most freezing countries have a tendency to overheat buildings to way beyond British, or at least my limitations – I had stated to sweat, making me look even more suspicious. Regarding me even more quizzically, she then asked where and with whom I was staying in the city. I could hardly reply that I was staying secretly with a married Cuban in the flat of another Cuban who was currently stuck in Cuba and selling his iPhone 6 in order to buy a return ticket (the truth). I said I would ‘probably’ stay in a hotel on my own. By the end of it all, she must have thought I was an international arms dealer without any evidence. She’s probably still dining out on the story of the sweaty British nutter with the Pork Pie, which incidentally, she didn’t even look at.... LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

t's that time again, the first auction of 2017 of all things Brighton, Hove and Sussex, which I run with Robert Jeeves, the postcard man in Queens Road, Brighton. The sale is on Tuesday 28th March at the St Leonard's Church Hall, Glebe Villas, Hove with viewing from 6.30 and the sale starting at 8pm. There is a great selection of 240 lots including photos, postcards, books, bottles and ephemera with prices from £2 upwards. The examples in the first picture are a small selection of original photos from the 1880s showing the Chain Pier and bathing huts and some great views along the seafront these are priced from £4£15.
“ We are still amazed at the amount of “stuff” that people have or find ” The next photo (Lot 110) is a view across Woodingdean in the 1930s during its construction with a guide of £8. The great photo with the aeroplane and car is an early shot of Shoreham Airport from approximately 1920 and is full of interesting content priced around £20. The last photo is a fine shot looking south into Brighton Station from 1962, so not that old but a view that is no longer there. Auctioneer Simon Caplin explains: “I wondered whether the bidding was ever going to stop with the amount of people wanting to buy the property, especially when at one particular point during proceedings 4 people all raised their paddles at the same time! My client was in the audience witnessing the amount of bids I was receiving that culminated in the fabulous price achieved and resulted in him leaving the auction with a rather large smile on his face!” The auction itself raised almost £2.4million in property values with the vast majority that sold selling for comfortably in excess of their reserve prices and ranged from a ground floor flat in Brighton that sold for £20,000 over the lower end of the guide price whilst a house in central Hove sold for £80,000 above its lower end guide. At the other end of the spectrum, a freehold ground rent investment in London sold on a 25 Years Purchase for £6,500 whilst the car parking spaces in Springfield also achieved an extremely good price moments after the auction had finished.
