19 KHALIL Ahmed Khalil explains the benefits of Khalil’s Reward Schemes to landlords
19
few months ago I directed a film for BBC – with Latest TV – on the history of the West Pier and it was great to see my work on BBC 1. Brilliantly shot and edited by my colleague Ant Carpendale and the fascinating story told exuberantly by BBC's Natalie Graham, it was a highlight of 2016 for me and hopefully quite a few of you. Heh it's good to combine local and global! (Watch it at www.bit.ly/2k9zd5O) Next week my colleague Angi Mariani has her film, made as another collaboration of Latest TV and BBC South East on BBC 1 (Inside Out, 7.30pm, Mon 20 March) and it's also about local and global. Recently we've seen the arrival in Brighton of Uber and the local taxi trade (Streamline, City Cabs, Radio Cabs and the many independent drivers) are not best pleased. Please watch Angi's BBC programme to hear the key issues which are to my mind safety of passengers and workers' rights. And of course supporting the local economy. I like the convenience and value for money you get from the new appbased platforms whether it's Amazon for books or Apple Music. We, the consumers, need to make value judgements and that's not about money but about humanity! I make a few, I buy my books at Kemptown Books largely... I recommend City Books and Waterstones too. I respect what Jeff Bezos has done at Amazon... he used to ring me back in the last century to try and persuade me to buy books and records from this new thing the internet. Oh how everyone in our office laughed as we said “Jeff we can go to HMV”. He didn't stop ringing.
“ Soon property buying and selling could be global and local trade might be diminished ” I guess my argument is with the platforms. Essentially, Facebook and Google claim mine and your content for free and take all the advertising revenue attached. Imagine if newspapers didn't pay for any content. Maybe they should call themselves a platform! The only way for news businesses to make any real money on these "platforms" is by sensationalist news... some call it fake news. So fake news is not a conspiracy it's just largely people chasing easy bucks. And heh I'm writing in Latest Homes so let's talk property platforms. Rightmove is the main platform and their profit margins are colossal. That money comes from estate agents but of course it comes from you. And because Rightmove charge so much, estate agents have to cover these extra costs and that is further leading to the rise of online agents threatening the jobs of all in the property market. Soon property buying and selling could be global and the local trade might be diminished. I'm not at all keen on that! Do you know what, I'm going to do something about it! To be continued.... @latestbrighton @latestbill

PROJECT
BRIGHTON > How 100 letters and a Sussex car park changed lives. Alison Hitchcock spoke to Latest Homes about her From Me to You campaign
W
hen friends Alison Hitchcock and Brian Greenley tell people about the From Me to You campaign, a project encouraging us to write letters to friends with cancer, words like inspiring, wonderful and amazing are thrown back at them. But when they’re asked how they came up with the idea, no one seems prepared for the answer: “From a car park in Sussex”. In 2009 Alison and Brian had met on yoga holiday in India. They got on well, meeting up a couple of times back in the UK, but neither would have described themselves as anything other than acquaintances. In 2010 Brian shared that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Perhaps because she didn’t know what to say, Alison offered to write letters to cheer him up. Looking back, she says, she’s not sure what possessed her – by her own admission she was no writer. But a promise was a promise!
“ Knowing that someone is caring enough to write means so much ” The letters began and over the next two years, as Brian’s bowel cancer developed to stage four, Alison kept on writing. She’d promised that the letters would be cheerful so she knew she had to make them funny. “I spent my week watching the world through different eyes, looking for the eccentric and the absurd, or at least something that could become a witty story”, Alison said. “I began to cherish the time I took for myself when I sat, alone, and wrote. It felt very good to be doing something for someone else and it took away that feeling of helplessness that friends so often feel when a loved one becomes ill.” Her enthusiasm for writing was bolstered by Brian’s response to receiving the letters. “Knowing that someone is caring enough to write, buy a stamp and put the letter in the postbox means so much,” he recalls. “The letters helped me to feel reconnected with the real world.” Brian had plenty of friends and family but still felt isolated during his cancer treatment. It is common that when someone receives a cancer diagnosis, even the most well meaning friends can distance themselves, fearful of what to say and how to say it. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
“Something as simple as a card or letter makes you feel reconnected again,” said Brian. “Knowing that someone is thinking of you can change your whole outlook on the day.” Fast forward to today. Brian is now four years clear of cancer, Alison’s letters continue, even if less frequently, and the once acquaintances are now best of friends. The letters encouraged Alison to leave her job in the City and instead pursue an MA in Creative Writing, write a novel and have short stories published. Brian began a health and wellbeing blog aimed at men over 50. After having their letter story recorded by BBC Sussex for Radio 4’s The Listening Project, the pair were inspired to start a national campaign, From Me to You, which encourages people to write letters to friends suffering from cancer – keeping them connected at a time when they feel most disconnected. The idea came to the pair as they sat in the BBC Sussex recording booth parked up in a Sussex car park. From Me to You runs letter writing workshops, they speak at events and the website www.frommetoyouletters.co.uk hosts writing tips on what to say and how to say it, and shares many inspirational stories from those who have received and sent letters. On 18th March they are holding a letter writing workshop in Brighton with New Writing South. The workshop helps overcome fears about writing that first letter and getting on to put pen to paper. They also welcome people who want to write a letter to a cancer patient they don’t know, to brighten their day. Places for the workshop can be booked at www.newwritingsouth.com and www.frommetoyouletters.co.uk

ARE YOU GETTING
THE BEST DEAL
FROM YOUR
LETTING
AGENT? Khalil’s Reward Schemes
I
t’s a fact: not all letting agents are the same. At Khalil’s we can make a very big difference to your experience of letting, whether you are a landlord or a tenant. Khalil’s Tenant Reward Scheme At Khalil’s we believe that good tenants deserve to be rewarded. They deserve extra services like cleaning and gardening, they should pay reduced letting fees and leave lower deposits, and, most importantly of all, they should benefit from a cash sum at the end of their tenancy if they pay their rent on time. And that is not a deal you are probably getting from your current letting agent. Go ahead, ask them why not! Khalil’s Rent Guarantee Scheme We also believe that landlords should get great returns on their investments, but their experience should be stressfree and void free. We will pay landlords rent every single month regardless of whether their property is occupied or not, and it’s totally our responsibility to maintain and fill their house or flat. And that’s not a deal you were offered by your current letting agent, is it? Maybe you too should ask them why not! Khalil’s is a letting agent that both landlords and tenants love We get such great properties to let because landlords know we will handle everything for them and pay them rent every single month of the year. And we get such good tenants to move in because we reward them, and we make finding, arranging and living in a rental property simple. Our Tenant Reward Scheme ensures rental properties are well cared for and that tenants are happy in them and encouraged to act responsibly. It costs each tenant £20 a month to join, and they must take out tenant liability insurance to signal their good intentions. We then include utility bills (including broadband) in their rent to make things easy, and offer a fortnightly cleaning and gardening service to ensure it is a pleasure to live in the property, and that it remains well looked after.

Are you getting the best deal? If you are a landlord and would like to chat about how we can guarantee your rent and take away the burden from letting your property, give us a call to find out about the difference that Khalil’s can make. If you are a tenant and would like to find out about our Tenant Reward Scheme, and benefit from cleaning services, reduced fees and a cash reward at the end of your tenancy, then speak to us (or ask us for some information you can show to your current landlord). After all, at Khalil’s we offer both landlords and tenants a very good deal. And that’s how we are different. For more information about Khalil’s Tenant Reward Scheme or Khalil’s Rent Guarantee Scheme call Ahmed Khalil on 01273 573960 / 07984 015669, visit Khalil Properties at 124 Lewes Road, Brighton, BN2 3LG or find us online at www.khalilproperties.co.uk.
