PROJECT

BRIGHTON > Let’s turn up the volume for Children’s Hospice Week

T

his week is Children’s Hospice Week – the UK’s only awareness and fundraising week for children with life shortening conditions, and their families and the palliative care services that support them. The aim of the week is to improve public understanding of what life is really like for families caring for seriouslyill children. The roundtheclock care that children with lifeshortening conditions need impacts on the entire family. Families often find it difficult to spend quality time together as it can be complicated to do even the simplest activities. It also highlights how precious family time is and how the wide range of children’s palliative care services across the UK provide vital support to thousands of families and help them treasure their time together.

“ The little things are the big things, like going for a swim ” We met up with our local children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House, to find out a bit more about the care services they offer. What does Chestnut Tree House do? Chestnut Tree House provides specialist palliative care services to around 300 children and young people aged 0–19 with lifeshortening conditions in Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, West Sussex and South East Hampshire – both at the hospice near Arundel and in families’ own homes. This includes assessment, advice and information, specialist short breaks, emergency care, step down from hospital and end of life care. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

The charity also offers bereavement support, a specialist neonatal care service, services for under 5s and transition advice for young people moving to adult services. The charity helps hundreds of local children with lifeshortening conditions, their siblings and families enjoy precious little moments together – for however long they have together. What it costs: £6,850 covers one day of all care services provided by Chestnut Tree House, £1,953 gives a child a three night break at Chestnut Tree House, allowing them to enjoy the hydrotherapy pool, relax in the multisensory room and join in with a host of activities, whilst mum and dad get the chance to ‘recharge their batteries’. £230 gives a child the chance to visit Chestnut Tree House for the day and enjoy a range of activities, £157 allows a member of the Chestnut Tree House Community Care Support Team to care for a lifelimited child in the child’s home, £40 will cover the costs of a session with a Bereavement Counsellor, £35 will enable a child to experience a magical hour in Chestnut Tree House’s multisensory room with a speciallytrained member of staff, while £4.75 pays for one minute of all Chestnut Tree House care services. Linda Perry, Director of Children’s Services at Chestnut Tree House says: “It’s really important for us to spread the word about the specialist care services we offer, both at the hospice and in families’ own homes. Children’s palliative care charities across the UK provide vital care and support, helping families be families. “Since Chestnut Tree House opened in 2003, the number of children we care for has increased from 30 to over 300, and during this time the children we are caring for have become more complex. We receive very little central government funding – less than 7% of our annual £3.5 million care costs – so rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community to raise the funds we need to reach out to more people and continue providing this vital care to local children and their families.” The little things are the big things… when you’re facing the greatest of challenges, it’s the smallest of things that matter most – things that the rest of us often take for granted, like having a bath at bedtime, walking in the garden, going for a swim. The care that Chestnut Tree House offers children in their own homes and at the hospice means that families get to enjoy more precious ordinary little moments. To find out more about the work of Chestnut Tree House visit www.chestnuttreehouse.org.uk or call the Fundraising Team on 01903 871820.

BUILDING A FUTURE Foster & Co make an exciting new start on the city's property scene

F

oster & Co may well be the new kids on the block but they are kids with a wide range of experience in the property industry. Edward Foster was formerly at Hamptons, a well established brand with a strong national reputation. "I loved being at Hamptons and I gained valuable experience there, but after ten years I knew that it was time for me start out on my own. I have certainly built up a network of clients and friendship groups, and realised that I was ready to get out of the corporate world and create my own independent brand."

“ They allow professional

photography to tell the story ”

Foster & Co have chosen to base themselves in an office just off Church Road in Hove, in The Drive. We decided that we wanted to operate from an office, a smart office rather than the format of a highstreet shop. Over the last few years we have noticed that fewer and fewer clients walk into that older format. We have to acknowledge that a lot of clients will now use online services when looking for a property to buy or rent, but there is still a need to meet people face to face and our smart office will give us that facility. But at the same time we did want to have a street presence, and with our office we have achieved both. It was important to us to be able to invite our clients into a smart and welcoming environment and I’m delighted that we have created just that." 6 | LATEST HOMES

So what area of the property market are they planning to work in? "We are not intending to limit ourselves to one area. We plan to offer a broad spectrum of services across sales and lettings as well as property management, and with my team of Charlie Foreman and Lily Hawkins I think we are ideally placed to do just that. We opened for business in April and already we have over 30 instructions on the books with properties ranging in price from £275,000 to £3,000,000. Right now our portfolio is citywide and we certainly want to be seen as a citywide business, but we also have interests beyond the city and we are already looking beyond with a keen interest in new home developments across the county and new sites too. Foster & Co have invested in the very best and most upto date technologies and have a keen eye on modern marketing methods. At the same time they embrace tried and tested methods of doing business with beautifully designed marketing materials in which they describe a home’s location. They then allow professional photography to tell the story and inspire potential buyers to go along and view a home live. Buying, selling, renting, new homes, property management and property consultancy will be the core of this exciting new business and Edward, Lily and Charlie are already excited by the strong start that they have seen in such a short time. www.fosterandcoestateagents.co.uk Ground floor, 10 The Drive, Hove BN3 3JA 01273 830919

ife is currently very peaceful at Landlady Towers. This is because it is mainly my own family living here, meaning I don't have to lodgerdodge so much. The only thing I have to worry about is The Big Daughter plying me with gin of an evening, which often isn't a bad thing. Although one of my two lodgers uses the kitchen for an inordinate amount of time to cook food that smells increasingly like ancient hosiery, I am now used to his habits and we tiptoe around each other in the manner of a couple of ballerinas performing the nutcracker suite with vegetables.

“ My other lodger – I only have two for now – is a joy ” My other lodger – I only have two for now – is a joy. He drinks and smokes, which is something that qualifies a person as normal in my house. He works as a chef and therefore is unlikely to use the kitchen for hours on end on the rare occasions that he's actually at home. Even if he did use the kitchen, I'm sure his wares would have a more tempting aroma than boiled Yfronts. I know this to be true as I have visited his workplace several times and eaten extremely good food, and he once made me a pie to apologise for putting his fag ends in the gutter. The pie was apparently steak and ale, and very good, but I wouldn't know because The Cuban Boyfriend, who virtually loses his mind at the mere mention of a pie, wolfed it down before I even got a look in. With such harmony in the house, I am loathe to destroy the delicate balance by introducing a new lodger into the mix. This is in spite of the fact that I've had a spare, empty double room for the past month. As if I didn't remember, The Small Daughter is always keen to remind me of the time last year when we had four lodgers, one of whom cooked a nightly portion of what can only be described as cow pat, and another who would constantly occupy the kitchen and leave her vegetable peelings all over the floor. Sometimes, a bit of peace and quiet can be priceless. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

t this time of another election 1 I came across two photos that actually reminded me why 3040 per cent of the population don't bother to vote... nothing changes and nothing gets done. Without being political: look at the picture to the right, a hot local topic regarding the condition of the Madeira Arches on Brighton seafront, with temporary supports obviously showing that there was a problem. ‘So when was this problem?’, you may ask. Last year? Five years ago? Ten years? NO... 1978. So why after this picture was taken has it taken almost 40 years to decide there is a problem needing millions of pounds to solve it? The photo at the top of my column is a demonstration in Brighton about high rents, and not enough house building, and a

more socialist housing policy. This was 47 years ago in 1970, and being apolitical both sides have had ample opportunities to deal with this issue but – and I'm not condoning it – people can't be bothered to vote because the important stuff gets talked about, but in the end it seems that's all that happens. As I stated earlier, this is not a political rant but an observation on my city. I care about it but despair when looking through all my stuff and realise that there is so much opportunity to improve Brighton and Hove, for us and its visitors, that’s not seized upon. Normal service will resume next week with the auction results. For more info email me Brightonandhovestuff@gmail.com 28 Western Rd, Hove, BN3 1AF

SISTER PLEDGE > Mother of Chailey Heritage School pupil recognised as one of Sussex’s Inspirational Women

S

ussex mothers, Vicki Harper and Charlotte Moore, were recognised at the prestigious Sussex Women of the Year Lunch held at the American Express Community Stadium this week. Vicki’s son Sam, aged 8 and a pupil at Chailey Heritage School, has a rare genetic disorder CDKL5, which affects only 300 boys globally. As part of his condition, he has severe epilepsy and needs onetoone care at all times. Vicki spoke at the lunch, that aims to honour and share achievements of women across Sussex, about family life with Sam, her husband Alec and other two children, and about what a difference Chailey Heritage has made to their lives. Charlotte also spoke movingly about living with her two autistic sons who are now in their 20s.

“ It is an amazing place with some

fantastic facilities and a team of people who are committed ”

“Chailey Heritage is integral to our lives and Sam’s wellbeing,” says Vicki. “The professionals that work there are dedicated to providing Sam with the best care and therapy for his complex needs. He has already built up great core strength through horse riding sessions and hydrotherapy and is learning to use the Eyegaze technology which allows him to track his eye movements to communicate and play games. It is an amazing place with some

fantastic facilities and with a team of people who are committed to making sure that every young person reaches their full potential.” SallyAnne Murray, Development Director of Chailey Heritage Foundation comments: “It’s great to be supported by this amazing event and Charlotte Moore and Vicki Harper to hear Vicki talk so eloquently and passionately about hers and Sam’s family life. At Chailey Heritage we rely heavily on the generosity of people at events like this one to generate funds to build facilities for the children and young adults. The money donated from the event will go towards our D.R.E.A.M (dynamic, real, experiential, amazing, magical) Centre campaign to create a modern, purpose built space, large enough for children and young people with complex disabilities to take part in a mixture of arts and physical activities.” Maureen Chowen, High Sheriff of East Sussex, who also spoke at the lunch, said “It has been a super afternoon meeting old friends, colleagues and new ladies from all around Sussex who have made contributions to the county. Today has been an opportunity to bring everyone together at the same time and to support Chailey Heritage Foundation, a welldeserved local charity, which, as Vicki told us, makes such a difference to the lives of young people with complex needs.” The annual lunch aims to recognise women’s extraordinary achievements and contributions to Sussex and this year’s lunch supports Chailey Heritage Foundation. TOP ATTRACTIONS > Fast broadband and two toilets now ‘must haves’ for homebuyers

F

ast broadband, at least two toilets and offroad parking are among the features that have become essentials for many property buyers. A new survey has revealed the top 20 things people look for in a new home, with central heating, double glazing and a garden unsurprisingly leading the way. But more modern factors – such as a strong internet connection, clear mobile phone signal and enough living space for a large flatscreen television – are also priorities for buyers.

“ This shows the importance of investing in ecofriendly solutions... ” Kevin Shaw, national sales director at property specialist Leaders, says: “New technology and modern design standards have changed the way people think about the place they live and what they expect when buying a new home. “Many people are looking for a property that boasts fast broadband and a good mobile phone signal, meaning sellers who can offer these should realise these factors have become a major selling point. “It is also interesting to note that a strong performance when it comes to energy efficiency is another must for buyers. This shows the importance of investing in ecofriendly solutions such as solar panels, cavity wall insulation and a highspecification boiler.” 10 | LATEST HOMES

Other issues that were named by respondents to the Gocompare.com survey as among the 20 most important things in a new home included ample electric sockets, friendly neighbours, a driveway or dedicated parking space, secure doors and windows, a dining room and a bath. Despite the modern feel of many of the answers, buyers still insisted that a landline telephone is also essential in any new property. Kevin adds: “Efficiency, security and connectivity have overtaken aesthetic issues such as period features. How a home performs in these areas is likely to sway modern buyers so sellers are advised to prioritise such matters.” For more information on selling, letting, buying or renting a property contact your local Leaders branch or visit leaders.co.uk.

They deserve extra services like cleaning and gardening, they should pay reduced letting fees and leave lower deposits, and, most importantly of all, they should benefit from a cash sum at the end of their tenancy if they pay their rent on time. And that is not a deal you are probably getting from your current letting agent. Go ahead, ask them why not! Khalil’s Rent Guarantee Scheme We also believe that landlords should get great returns on their investments, but their experience should be stressfree and void free. We will pay landlords rent every single month regardless of whether their property is occupied or not, and it’s totally our responsibility to maintain and fill their house or flat. And that’s not a deal you were offered by your current letting agent, is it? Maybe you too should ask them why not! Khalil’s is a letting agent that both landlords and tenants love We get such great properties to let because landlords know we will handle everything for them and pay them rent every single month of the year. And we get such good tenants to move in because we reward them, and we make finding, arranging and living in a rental property simple. Our Tenant Reward Scheme ensures rental properties are well cared for and that tenants are happy in them and encouraged to act responsibly. It costs each tenant £20 a month to join, and they must take out tenant liability insurance to signal their good intentions. We then include utility bills (including broadband) in their rent to make things easy, and offer a fortnightly cleaning and gardening service to ensure it is a pleasure to live in the property, and that it remains well looked after. What’s more we waive many letting fees that other agents charge, and we fund a reward for good tenants, with a 10% 16 | LATEST HOMES

discount on their rent at the end of their tenancy, as long as payments have been made on time. This means we encourage only good tenants to rent the property we manage for you. It also means that there are many perks that are available to tenants living in our properties, so people tend to stay longer and live happier. And that is good news for everyone! Are you getting the best deal? If you are a landlord and would like to chat about how we can guarantee your rent and take away the burden from letting your property, give us a call to find out about the difference that Khalil’s can make. If you are a tenant and would like to find out about our Tenant Reward Scheme, and benefit from cleaning services, reduced fees and a cash reward at the end of your tenancy, then speak to us (or ask us for some information you can show to your current landlord). After all, at Khalil’s we offer both landlords and tenants a very good deal. And that’s how we are different.
