Projects Support Manager Emma Willcocks, Artists Peter Cutts & James Grantham, Joe Fuller

AND THE WINNER IS... > Our editor Joe Fuller reports on the Artists Open Houses award winners, including The Latest's pick for Best Open House

O

ne of the most striking things about the longlist this year was the variety of different experiences on offer. Some exhibits weren’t even in houses, such as the wheelchair art exhibit at a Sainsbury’s cafe which will surely have reached a wide audience. The art was made using a wheelchair device called 'enAball', which enables artists with limited mobility to draw and paint using motorised wheelchairs, and you can find out more at www.mssussex.com. Artists Open Houses showcases the breadth of artistic talent in Brighton and its surrounding areas, so it was really tough to pick a shortlist and winner when the quality was so good across the board. You can read some of my thoughts on the longlist in the editor's column on the contents page of Latest 7 on the flip side of Latest Homes.

“ Artists Open Houses showcases the breadth of local artistic talent ” The three houses I shortlisted stood out from the crowd however. 11 Rugby Road was a cornucopia of ceramic crunckle candle things, which are a great creation, as well as plants, prints, jewellery and a momentous sweets room that has to be seen to be believed. Encounters was a well curated art gallery, with beguiling palimpsest digital montages, video art, gift shop style trinkets and a poignant piece about a missing artist’s work, who was sadly denied a visa to be there himself. Connecting the works through a theme of nature and technology also worked well, ensuring that a visitor gets something different each year. It was a very difficult decision, but the Latest Award for Best Open House went to Montefiore Open House. Grace Eyre Artists at Montefiore Open House offered an impressive range of quality art including paints, a particularly good felt tip work, enigmatic photographs, sculpture, mosaics and more. The relaxed space was welcoming, and the consistent high quality and affordability of the art was commendable. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

I came away from Montefiore Open House with the longest notes regarding all the great artworks I'd seen, which helped me gather my thoughts and conclude that Grace Eyre Artists were deserved winners. I also probably should have purchased one of the photographs in fact. Curse my indecisive ways! I suggest checking Grace Eyre Artists’ work again in a future exhibit, and you can find out more from their news link at bit.ly/2sVj7BP. Again, it was a very difficult decision and Encounters and 11 Rugby Road offer exceptional experiences for the visitor that I can also thoroughly recommend. T

here is a heatwave in Brighton and, of course I am in Turkey, where heatwave conditions are the norm at this time of year. Contrary to popular opinion, Turkey definitely feels safer than the UK at the moment, and whatever your opinion of Erdogan, the president so loathed and loved that he's like Marmite in a suit, he's certainly got more of a handle on terrorism than we seem to have in the UK.

“ Antiterrorist measures have even

gone so far as to affect me and my erratic Turkish holiday lets ”

His anti terrorist measures have even gone so far as to affect me and my erratic Turkish holiday lets. An old man who lives in the village and also lets his house, joyfully informed me that you now have to pay 'thousands' to register the fact that you let your house and, when you do let it, must inform the government who is living therein on a daily basis. Further investigations revealed that the reason for this new clampdown is because someone from ISIS did an Airbnb rental in Istanbul recently. I am supposed to be here in Turkey on a relaxing solo holiday, let alone having to think about ISIS members enjoying my new solar powered fairy lights. Two days before I left, a Brighton friend who's having terrible trouble with an unwieldy kitchen renovation decided to join me, making it no more a relaxing solo holiday. Then, a family member had some terrible news and decided to come and join me as well, making it not really a holiday at all any more. So far, I've spent an awful lot of time going backwards and forwards on the Bodrum ferry in order to meet distressed people, and the rest of my time in various gin and tonic counselling sessions. On top of all this, The Cuban Boyfriend has been in regular contact to 'remind' me that I am supposed to be finding a guy to build us a BBQ in the front yard. All the materials – a pile of big stones basically – have been sitting in the yard for over a month. Oh well, at least I'll have something to throw at any potential Airbnb terrorists. 6 | LATEST HOMES

S

orry, I did say I was announcing the next auction this week, but I am a week premature so instead I have found a couple of photos that, in theory could have been taken last weekend at the London to Brighton bike ride.

“ The only benefit was very cheap parking and in most streets ” So the first photo is the traffic at the Old Steine with day trippers arriving for some fun on Whit Monday 1966, so imagine, no air con, no electric windows, power steering and all the other mod cons we are used to, and only 4 gears, double declutching and top speeds much lower, arriving in Brighton for a jolly (the only benefit was very cheap parking and in most streets... free parking, so nothing changes apart from it's now a more luxurious gridlock). So to the second photo of a great comedian (Billy Connolly) who has just been Knighted and in 1986 did the annual bike ride and doesn't even look out of breath. I promise to let you have the all of the information on the next auction next week. If you need any more info you can pop in the shop at 28 Western Road Hove or email Brightonandhovestuff@gmail.com

PROJECT

BRIGHTON > Paddle Round The Pier surfs back into Brighton and Hove this weekend

T

he world’s biggest charity watersports beach festival at Hove Lawns is in its 21st year in Brighton and Hove this weekend. The sporting bonanza is a summer weekend of waterbased fun supported and surrounded by a ‘Paddle Village’ of retail, food stalls and entertainment stages with something for all the family, from surfboards and small boats to highend Ukuleles and surfart on display. The festival is run entirely by volunteers and has so far raised over £300,000 for charities to date. The spectacle that is Paddle Round The Pier beach festival emerged from humble beginnings. In 1996 a small group of surfers, led by founder Dave Samuel, decided to bring together the surfing community in a social seafront event which would raise money for charity at the same time. From the 50 people who attended the first ‘Paddle’, the event has evolved into what is now regarded as the world’s largest free charity beach festival, with average visitor numbers of 50,000+ people!

“ The festival has so far raised over £300,000 for charities ” The weekend of watersport events continues to grow each year with long distance SUP races, open water swims, surf lifesaving competition, kitesurfing, and prone paddle board races all on the lineup for the 2017 bonanza. Visitors could even paddle away with a Fatyak Kayak this year – but they have to be in it to win it. Founder Dave Samuel said: “This year is set to be bigger and better than ever with Polynesian Outriggers and a huge demonstration pool confirmed on the lineup. Bring your kids, bring your friends and bring your granny because this really is a sunfilled funfilled festival for everyone to enjoy!” The Paddle Village has entertainment stages for all ages, outdoor restaurants, landbased activities including skateboarding, BMX and Parkour. As well as the famous “paddle round the pier” competition, the festival includes entertainment, retail and food stalls, fairground, hiphop dance championships and a speciallybuilt accessible beach. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

The charity festival has something for everyone – from serious surfers to families and youngsters. The funpacked, water themed festival has its serious side: this year the event is raising money and awareness for RNLI, The Wave Project and Brighton Surf Live Saving Club. Event organisers– who all give their time voluntarily – hope to raise over £20,000 for the chosen charities. Brighton and Hove Mayor, Cllr. Mo Marsh, said: “This event appeals to watersports enthusiasts around the world, and the fact that it draws so many experts and enthusiasts – as well as thousands of spectators – marks this as one of the UK’s most important festivals and fundraising events”. Working in conjunction with Surf Life Saving GB, and sponsored by Brighton and Hove Bus Company, Paddle Round the Pier facilitates disability groups as diverse as Cerebral Palsy sufferers, DownsSyndrome, partially sighted/blind and kids afflicted with Chromosome Deficiency, allowing kids, young people and their carers access to the sea, often for the first time in their lives. Paddle founder Dave Samuel: “From humble beginnings, Paddle Round the Pier has grown into the world’s largest free watersports festival, and has raised over £300,000 for charity. It has something to offer everyone, young and old, on and off land. We encourage people to come along and get involved: this year’s event promises to be the biggest and best yet!”. Admission is free but donations are expected at the gates. The twoday event takes place on Hove Lawns from 9am on Saturday 1st July to 6pm on Sunday 2nd July. www.paddleroundthepier.com

TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR LANDLORDS

TO COMPLY

WITH NEW EPC RULES Khalil’s Rent Guarantee Scheme

H

ardly a month goes by without new rules, changes to guidelines or the threat of legislation looming over landlords’ heads. At the last count, there were over 140 government statutes and regulations that landlords must follow to be seen to provide a safe and compliant rental property. That’s a lot to keep track of. And there’s only one thing that’s constant about the legislative landscape: the certainty that more of it is on the way. EPC 2018 The latest changes are the added ‘bite’ that EPCs (Energy Performance Certificates) are set to have. From next April, you won’t be able to rent out your property unless it passes an efficiency test. It is estimated that there are over one million dwellings in England and Wales that won’t currently pass the new rules. And, what’s more, they could face huge fines as a result. Landlords must have an EPC rated E or above if they wish to issue a new tenancy or renew an existing one. This requirement will pretty quickly be rolled out to apply to all tenancies, including existing ones. What can landlords do? If your last EPC rating was below an E, you can get an uptodate EPC carried out in the hope that something has miraculously changed. Or you’ll need to make efficiency improvements to boost your rating before your property is let out again or its contract renewed. Each EPC report carries a list of recommended measures for improving energy efficiency performance. You’ll need to carry out enough of these to raise your score above an E rating. There are some exemptions, but they are few and far between. • If the improvements will cause damage to your property • If you cannot gain necessary consent to carry them out • If the improvements are not costeffective (under set measures) In these cases, you can register for an exemption on the central register, which will be available from October 2017. Time is running out – and time is one thing most landlords are short of. Most of the U.K.’s two million or so landlords are not just landlords. Many are accidental landlords who just happen to have property available to let. And most buytolet landlords usually hold down a career that accounts for the majority of their time. 18 | LATEST HOMES
