PROJECT BRIGHTON The Artists Open Houses Festival view and buy original artworks straight from the artist’s home

B

righton’s and Hove’s Artists Open Houses began in 1982, when an artist in Fiveways opened his front door to the public, inviting visitors into his home to view paintings by himself and a group of friends. Soon other artists in the area followed suit to form a local trail. The phenomenon grew rapidly across the city, creating individual trails in many areas. Originally part of Brighton Festival, the Artist Open Houses became a separate festival in its own right in 2004, set up by a small group of dedicated artists and designers.

“ Offering the opportunity to view

work by contemporary artists and makers in their homes ”

The Artists Open Houses festival provides a unique experience for visitors, offering the opportunity to view work by contemporary artists and makers in their homes, meeting the artists and buying artwork and crafts directly from them. Work may include metal ware, ceramics and textiles, as well as painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and many other media. Most of the houses belong to one of 14 trails, which are geographically grouped and venues are usually within walking distance of each other. Entry to Open Houses is free – and many Open Houses also offer homemade tea and cake! There are two festivals annually – a large festival in May and a slightly smaller festival at Christmas time. In May the focus is on painters, sculptors, photographers, while the Christmas festival offers a wealth of jewellery, ceramics, textiles and other handmade gifts. It is the ideal way to take the strain out of Christmas shopping, creating a special atmosphere where you can chat to the artists whilst viewing an amazing selection of individual, unique arts & crafts. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

At Christmas the wealth of established and professional artists and makers, as well as new and emerging artists, offers the perfect opportunity to pick up inspiring and original Christmas gifts for friends, family – or for yourself! This year brings work from some of the country’s top makers in the fields of textiles, printmaking and homewares, as well as handcrafted Christmas cards, wreaths, tree decorations and homemade foodie gifts. Spreading to the furthest reaches of Brighton and Hove and out to the South Downs village of Ditchling, a visit to the Artists Open Houses is the perfect way to kick off the festive season. The ethos of Artists Open Houses is inclusive – it is a community event encouraging young artists, schools and colleges as well as those who may otherwise be marginalized from the art world mainstream, whether through learning disabilities, mental health issues or for other reasons. Any artist can take part in the festival as long as they live within the 01273 telephone code area. We are the oldest and largest Open House movement, proud of our roots within the diverse and vibrant artists’ community of Brighton and Hove. The Artists Open Houses is always innovate and evolving, reflecting the experience and professionalism as well as the youth and freshness of the city’s artists. With a focus on quality and value for money, the Artists Open Houses bring a dynamic mix of arts and crafts to the widest possible audience, providing visitors and viewers with engaging and inspiring experiences. The 2017 Christmas Artists Open Houses festival runs weekends 25 November until 10 December. Why not take a break from the High Street and shop in warmth and comfort, with a glass of mulled wine and mince pie, beside a blazing hearth! Look out for AOH brochures at the city’s libraries, stations and museums, or pick one up from any of the Open House venues. For more information visit: www.aoh.org.uk

LANDLADY Social Climbing

I

t may surprise you to know that in the 16 years I've owned a flat in Hastings, I had never seen the rear of the building until yesterday. This is shameful, given the fact that I've administered the freehold for the last eight years. I suspected all manner of horrors were lurking behind, including a terribly virile skein of ivy which, in spite of the fact that it’s as dark as the black hole of Calcutta back there, has managed to creep

“ Meet the neighbours

and teeter around on the scaffolding ”

its way to the top of the building. I did try to gain access in order to tackle the ivy about three years ago, but was met with a torrent of abuse from the basement tenant and a similar torrent of snarling from her hungrylooking pitbull. I therefore, probably quite wisely, opted to give it a miss. Then, out of the blue, I last week received an email from a man in the house next door, suggesting that I might like to

have a look at the rear of our building as he had scaffolding up, which would make access easy. He also tactfully suggested that there were some ‘issues’ which might need addressing. So, yesterday afternoon, I trotted off to Hastings to meet the builder, meet the neighbours and teeter around on the scaffolding, which was not how I wished to spend my afternoon off, preferring the cream horn and sofa option. I was grumpy all the way there on the train, as I'd had to go directly from a gruelling kitchen shift at The Supermarket. But within half an hour of arriving, I was high up on the scaffolding in bright winter sunshine, shooting the breeze with my charming neighbours, who are gentle and

I

n the lull before Christmas, I have been restocking and updating the display of my shop, hoping for the crowds to arrive for those oneoff presents that I just happen to have in the Brighton And Hove Stuff world of anything and everything to do with our City (town), from the very old to the more recent.

“ A beautiful hand coloured

lithograph from 1842 of an intended Harbour ”

So when looking at what I had new to display I just couldn’t decide – do I go colourful and modernist or black and white and old? The bubble question mark above my head was suddenly burst by the entrance of a good client who popped into the shop carrying some extremely unusual and rarish prints. The first one is a beautiful hand coloured lithograph from 1842 of an intended Harbour at Brighton which would have

interesting souls, owneroccupiers and painting the huge building themselves. They told me that a famous actress owns the top floor, and invites them all to her Tuscan villa every year... how Hastings has changed. The builder, who came recommended by my letting agent, was equally eloquent and I'm sure he'll tackle our ‘issues’ (dodgy render, poison ivy, flatulent facias, rotten roofing) with the greatest of skill. The charming neighbour didn't even mind that we would probably destroy his beautiful, leafy, 3 metre high banana palm erecting the scaffolding, claiming that it grew from a foot high to a towering Goliath in less than three years. Clearly it's been taking tips from the poison Ivy next door. Hove or email me on brightonandhovestuff@gmail.com I am open Monday to Saturday during December so more chances to grab the gift that will be unusual or quirky and show the thought and effort made for those you are buying for!

encircled the Chain Pier, and actually starts at about the point of the yettobebuilt Palace Pier – and is almost a dead ringer for what is now the modern Marina built 135 years later. Ironically the main reason it was never considered to be viable was that it would have affected the leisure pursuits, i.e. swimming and bathing, which were the town’s very raisin d’etre. The second print is also a great piece of social history which dates from around 1830 and shows the hustle and bustle of the interior of Brighton’s ‘New Market Place’, with entrances on Market St and Black Lion St close to Brighton’s old town hall. As you can imagine my window dressing job was suddenly made into a no brainier and both prints hang proudly in the window waiting to be snapped up, which I’m hoping will happen very soon. But that will only force the ‘?’ bubble to reappear. So if you have anything Brighton and Hove that is sitting around gathering dust that should be displayed to be sold, bring it along to the shop at 28 Western Road

LANDLORDS

AVOID BEING THE BUDGET’S ‘WHIPPING BOY’

– BUT THEY REMAIN TIED TO THE POST A look at the impact

I

n recent years landlords have come to dread the appearance of that battered red suitcase. Yet the recent Budget announcement by the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, saw many breathing a sigh of relief. As Tim WalfordFitzgerald, private client tax partner at the chartered accountants HW Fisher & Company, said: “Buytolet landlords could be forgiven for pinching themselves. For once they've not been the whipping boys of a Budget.' And, it’s true, it certainly could have been worse. But landlords still feel very much constrained by the prospect of changes that are already happening: they may not be this year’s whipping boy, but they still are very much tied to the post. What does the Budget mean for landlords? “The thumbscrews are still on as far as private landlords and the buytolet sector are concerned. But at least they haven't been tightened still further.” Angus Stewart, of mortgage brokers Property Master. In many ways it’s the things that didn’t change that brought the disappointments this year. • The phasing out of tax relief under Section 24 continues apace. • A licensing scheme for landlords remains on the cards. • The tenant fee ban will still potentially pass costs on to landlords. Yet the fact that landlords were not hit by higher taxes was one thing that was very welcome for being left unsaid. There were also some other encouraging signs. Rather than announce more punitive tax measures, Philip Hammond announced plans to look into incentivising landlords who offer tenants longerterm tenancy agreements. Although exactly what these incentives may be remains unclear. David Smith, of the Residential Landlords Association, scathingly commented that: “Today's Budget could have acted on proposals to provide tax relief for landlords prepared to offer longer tenancies. Instead we 12 | LATEST HOMES

advertising feature

have yet another consultation adding to the 15 already ongoing which relate to the private rented sector. Tenants cannot live in consultations.” Is there anything that landlords can bank on? Change is what defines today’s letting sector – it’s the only constant – and this makes it very hard for landlords to be certain of their income. Amid the turbulent seas that surround landlords there is something that can be guaranteed, however. And that is your rent. Khalil’s Rent Guarantee Scheme delivers month after month – even on those fateful Novembers when the Budget is announced. And unlike the Chancellor, it will only make your life easier. Here’s how it works. • You lease your rental property to us. • We take care of daily maintenance, finding tenants, tenant relationships and rent collection. • And we guarantee to pay you an agreed rent every single month – regardless of whether your property is occupied or not. It’s that simple. There’s no need for an official consultation, but we’re happy to talk it over whenever you want!
