PROJECT BRIGHTON Young City Reads – Brighton & Hove's BIG READ for children

T

he words that best describe Young City Reads are those used by a young reader at our 2017 finale event in Brighton Festival when asked by a member of the public why over a thousand children were making their way into Brighton Dome, all clutching a copy of the same book. “It's like we're all in this massive book club,” he said with a beaming smile, his own copy wedged under his arm, ready to be signed by the author. It's this sense of reading as a shared activity, and a love of reading for pleasure, that Young City Reads continues to inspire in more and more young readers year on year.

“ As well as being a brilliantly written

adventure, it also explores some familiar anxieties that children face ”

The project began as a pilot in 2013 and was supported by Michael Rosen as Guest Director of Brighton Festival. Michael chose one of his favourite books – Emil and the Detectives – for children across the city to read, discuss and creatively engage with, and 17 teachers and their classes joined in. Just four years (and four books) later, over 70 local classes (around 1,950 children) shared the first book in A F Harold's Fizzlebert Stump series, and Chris Riddell came aboard as the project’s first patron. 'Wonderful project, it was incredible to be part of it. There were children engaging in reading, and laughing along with the story, who I have never seen read independently before.' Class Teacher, Young City Reads 2017 Every summer our focus group of teachers read a shortlist of titles and agree on a favourite, with reluctant readers in mind, ensuring that children with a range of abilities can take part. The perfect YCR title should have a sense of humour, inspiring LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

illustrations and be full of heart, and the 2018 book of choice is no exception... Between March and May 2018 we're inviting schools across Sussex to share in the fresh and funny super hero epic Kid Normal by Greg James and Chris Smith. As well as being a brilliantly written adventure, it also explores some familiar anxieties that children face at school, and reminds us that you don't need superpowers to make a difference. Teachers can already sign up for free to take part via cityreads.co.uk. The project launches on World Book Day (1 March) from which date participating classes have ten weeks to read the book, receiving free weekly emails and fun downloadable resources, until the interactive finale event in Brighton Festival on 19 May when we'll be celebrating this big reading adventure with the authors live on stage at Brighton Dome. “What I love about Young City Reads is that it encourages children to read for pleasure and I think that is such an important lesson for us all to learn, the fact that picking up a book and getting involved in a story is just the most pleasurable experience you can have.” Chris Riddell, YCR Patron, author, illustrator and Children's Laureate 201517 To find out more about Young City Reads visit www.cityreads.co.uk, find us on Facebook or tweet @youngcityreads. You can help us keep the project free and accessible to all local schools by making a donation to the project via our website. All donations are spent on enabling schools in the city's most disadvantaged areas to take part, putting books in the hands of children or supporting schools with travel costs to the finale event. also named after a monk’s hood. If you have a flat roof, check for signs of cracking, blistering, and standing water. Surprisingly, even small hairline cracks or fissures can lead to unwelcome damp.

ALL HE SURVEYS Grant Crossley talks up a storm and reveals his home health checks following inclement weather

A

llegedly, bad weather always looks worse through a window. However, postChristmas, we’ve battened down the hatches and hunkered down to battle the torrential rain and galeforce winds – all of which has put a severe strain on our homes. I’m no Michael Fish, but inevitably, after a storm comes the calm – now is the time to get prepared.

“ Your home is often your biggest financial asset ” Your home is often your biggest financial asset. Should you decide to ignore any problems now, you run the risk of haemorrhaging your hardearned cash on putting things right in the future.

Ride out the storm, put your coats on and head outside to assess any damage – the exterior of your building is your first line of defence against the weather. So, what are you looking for? GRANT’S EXTERNAL TIPS Check the roof Water penetration, especially winddriven rain, is a common problem. If you have a pitched roof, check for any slipped, missing or broken roof tiles and slates. Most roofs can be viewed from street level, although should you decide to get the ladder out, read up about working at heights. But, remember, you can always call a professional if in need. Look for any missing or upturned lead flashings or similarly broken cowls. Cowls are fitted to chimney pots to increase the draft and prevent the wind and rainwater entering into your chimney, and they’re

Check the gutters Head towards the eaves of your property. The eave is the projecting bottom edge of your roof, forming an overhang to throw rainwater away from your exterior walls; but nowadays this is collected by guttering (secretly listening to an inside conversation under these is where eavesdropping comes from). Check that fascias and soffits are intact. Clean out any leaves and debris which can block up the guttering, and replace any broken sections, missing stopends and brackets. Should you find any blockages in the rainwater downpipe you may need to call a professional.

NOW & THEN Andy Garth says: It’s TWO words, right

W

elcome back from all the fun and frivolity... now the rant! The first picture is of a small portion of my bestselling 1830 map of Brighton (copy) which was handcoloured and presents a beautiful image of our town around the time of some serious developments. One of these was Kemp Town named after its principal developer and land owner Thomas Kemp, who was also involved in various other major new builds at this period of time. So to all you lovely people who persist in writing ‘Kemptown’ – You are wrong, it’s TWO words it’s KEMP TOWN... unless you are referring to it as it’s parliamentary name, which some lazy blighter decided is one word. Well, he obviously didn’t come from round here and thought it was like Kempton the racecourse. And relax, rant over but I’m still watching for you, making the error, and will be making a note. Anyway, a fantastic map was given to me in the shop which I had to share with you. I have shown – or as the map says ‘Shewing’ – in the two other photos 6 | LATEST HOMES

something from 1825 which was part of the planning details sent to Brighton’s then planning department (that might be a bit of a guess) – the people who had to check these things out in those days (probably the Town Commissioners), and it has the proposed Brunswick Town development in context to the western part of Brighton.

“ A fantastic map was

given to me in the shop ”

I photographed the wording as it was interesting to note that the Lanes area was regarded as “The Ancient part of the Town of Brighton”, and trying to work out why they randomly used the ‘f’ shape for an ‘s’ in the word progress. It just shows there is still some fantastic Brighton and Hove treasure out there which we all would love to see. LANDLORDS

NEED ANOTHER CONSULTATION

LIKE A HOLE

IN THE RENTAL

MARKET. The Sword of Damocles is hanging over landlords

I

t is said that fear produces two responses: flight or fight. We beg to differ. Successive governments have been running scared over how to deal with the housing crisis that dogs the UK. But, after years of burying their heads in the sand (flight) we are not now seeing firm policies that will tackle it (fight). Instead we are seeing a raft of consultations that are more like sit tight, than either fight or flight! And it’s landlords who are being hit the hardest by this atmosphere of uncertainty. Threatened measures hang like the Sword of Damocles over us. An air of indecision looms above the private rental sector – and, as we all know, uncertainty is the worst possible environment for investment. These unresolved threats clouding the horizon could radically alter landlords’ income – and the recent Budget did nothing to resolve them. In fact, it simply added yet another consultation to the burgeoning list that already dangles over our heads. Still not budging after the Budget Phillip Hammond’s promise to set up a consultation into what incentives could be given to landlords who offer longerterm tenancies incensed David Smith, of the Residential Landlords Association. “Today's Budget could have acted on proposals to provide tax relief for landlords prepared to offer longer tenancies. Instead we have yet another consultation, adding to the 15 already ongoing which relate to the private rented sector. Tenants cannot live in consultations.” Let’s add to this that landlords are also struggling to live under so many consultations. On top of major changes to tax relief already taking place and landlord licensing schemes being extended, there are consultations promising changes to Building Regulation and Fire Safety, Universal Credit, Right to Rent, Electrical Checks, Client Money Protection and Dispute Resolution. And these are just the tip of the consultation iceberg. 12 | LATEST HOMES

Can landlords be sure of anything anymore? Managing any investment is hard in times of change and uncertainty. Yet, it is still possible for landlords to guarantee an essential part of their plans for profit. Khalil’s Rent Guarantee Scheme pays landlords an agreed rent every single month. It doesn’t matter what happens to the economy, or what hoops are introduced for the private rental sector to jump through. With no void periods and a guaranteed rent, you can be sure of at least one thing: your income. And we also take on maintaining your property, dealing with your tenants and making sure that everything is administered according to those changing sets of demands that we have thrust upon us. All you need do is sit back and enjoy the proceeds. There may, indeed, be trouble ahead – but, with our Rent Guarantee Scheme, you can shelter safely from the storm.
