…from Pearl I can hardly believe we are at the end of another year – they do say that time goes by faster as you get older, but this is ridiculous! It seems to me that last year’s New Year’s Eve was barely a few fleeting moments ago. Many might look back on 2008 as a year full of fear and financial hardship, but I hope that for you there have been illuminating moments of magic that will stay with you, as there have been for me. Did you set yourself any New Year’s resolutions back in January? And how did you get on with them? One person who has stuck with her resolution, and indeed is still resolutely working on it, is Juliet Rust, the winner of our Win Your Dream competition that we ran back in our January issue with Frank Jay, who coaches people to achieve their dreams through his company, Polishing Diamonds. “I was inspired by Juliet's project because it aims to create sustainability.” says Frank. Juliet plans to open a community centre in a town called Bundung in Gambia. “Bungdung suffers with high unemployment, poverty and high children’s death levels due to a lack of medication.” explains Julia. “I want to create a community centre where skills can be taught, trade can be introduced and farming initiated so the people can feed themselves, plus programmes for education and health.” This ambitious project would be owned and achieved in partnership with the locals, promoting self-esteem and a sense of pride. Preparation for realising this dream is well under way – Juliet has been regularly meeting with her designated team of nine, which is all part of Frank's specially designed formula for making things happen. However, the team still have some obstacles to overcome and Juliet is on the lookout for extra volunteers and support, and in particular needs people with some expertise in areas such as marketing, IT, fundraising, graphic design, law and administration. If you fancy doing something a bit different and special in 2009, why not get in touch with Juliet on 07515 936 900 or email her at julietsuccess@yahoo.co.uk, to see if you might be able to play a part in bringing this dream into fruition?

Can a shrub from the Himalayas help with vaginal dryness? Vaginal dryness can be a particular problem during and after the menopause. Up to 50% of post-menopausal women suffer from vaginal dryness, with this figure rising to 70% for women aged 70 and over. This results from a reduction in the level of the female hormone oestrogen, which occurs at menopause. Oestrogen is responsible for maintaining the elasticity of the vaginal walls, and for the natural lubrication of the vaginal lining. At the menopause, the walls of the vagina become thinner and less elastic, and the inner lining becomes drier, resulting in vaginal discomfort, and painful intercourse. One approach to these problems involves the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). However, HRT has itself been associated

with potential adverse effects, including increased risk of blood clot formation, and breast cancer. For those women who do not want to use HRT, or cannot use HRT for medical reasons, nutritional supplementation is a possible natural alternative. Recent studies have shown that oil extracted from berries of the Sea Buckthorn plant may help to maintain the natural lubrication of the vagina in menopausal women. The Sea Buckthorn plant, a shrub originating in the Himalayas, is one of the few good dietary sources of omega 7 polyunsaturated fatty acids such as palmitoleic acid and cis-vaccenic acid. These omega 7 fatty acids are in turn important components of the mucous membranes, which line and lubricate the vagina. Although the beneficial effects of Sea Buckthorn oil have only recently been recognised in Western countries, the berries have been used in the traditional medicine of Tibet and Mongolia for more than a thousand years. No significant adverse effects have been reported for people taking sea buckthorn oil. Omega 7 is a supplement containing Sea Buckthorn oil produced by Pharma Nord, available from independent pharmacies and health food shops. Omega 7 is suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and is free from yeast, gluten, sugar and lactose. For more information on Omega 7, call 0800 591756 or email uksales@pharmanord.co.uk

Jo-ann goes green

Christmas is a tricky time for the eco-conscious, but Jo-ann Hodgson says where there’s a will…

Jo-ann Hodgson

“I’m pretty confident that I’ve now lived through enough Christmases to know how to enjoy the season without it seriously damaging myself, my wallet – or even the Earth”

Green Christmas greetings When discussing if it were possible to get through Christmas on a tight, credit-crunch budget, a friend of mine came up with a radical idea. “My plan is to tell everyone that I hate them, thus saving them or me having to do any Christmas shopping or bothering to see each other,” he explained. “Then in January, I can explain how it was all a hilarious ecofriendly joke. Might stop me drinking too much as well.” An interesting idea. But I don’t want to spend Christmas alone in my flat, munching on a takeaway with a tatty party hat sliding miserably from my head. It’s not a happy image is it? I actually quite like my friends – and family, for that matter – and would like to spend the little holiday I get in the midst of mulled wine induced jollity. I'm pretty confident that I’ve now lived through enough Christmases to know how to enjoy the season without it seriously damaging myself, my wallet or even the Earth. I know everyone will be at the pub on Christmas Eve, where novelty drinks will be the order of the night – but remember, that eggnog/Baileys/whiskey combination is unlikely to sit well when you are woken up at some ungodly hour of the morning on Christmas Day. The morning ‘fun time’ alarm call will either be executed by overexcited children or parents who run the supposed day of relaxation like a military operation – both are as bad as the other – and I should know. Christmas Eve of 2005 saw me drink more than my body weight in goodwill alcohol, leave unintelligible Christmas wishes messages on my friends’ answerphones, and ending up taking a nap in the flowerbed of my front garden, following a losing battle with the door lock and my balance. It was not a happy Christmas at 7am the next morning. When it comes to Christmas cards, I would say that probably the worst idea I’ve heard for a long time came from the mouth of the ruddycheeked Tory boy on this year’s The Apprentice. He was asked to come up with a retail-friendly eco-product. He imagined celebration cards that reminded loved ones to enjoy a shower instead of a bath on their special occasion would go down a treat. Exactly who, I wondered, would choose to water down their good wishes with a bucket of preaching? However, much to my surprise, the idea obviously floated someone’s boat as such cards now exist – I’ve seen them with my own disbelieving eyes. For me though, e-cards are definitely the eco-winners. They’re more fun and interactive for one, plus there is the added bonus that you don’t

need to go to the trouble of finding out everyone’s physical address (ah, the joy of email and Facebook). Not to forget the financial aspect – e-cards will of course cost you a lot less in paper and stamps, and as we all know, the planet will thank you for that, too. And the pièce de résistance? Eco-preaching messages are at your discretion. Merry Christmas one and all!

SOME BECKHAM WITH YOUR CHIPS? England legend David Beckham and GO3 have joined forces to launch a new range of classic favourite foods alongside three nutritious food supplements, to help busy families eat a healthier and more balanced diet. Beckham has been integral in the development of the new food range which reflects his experience as a leading sportsman and dedicated father. “As a dad I know how hard it is to get kids to eat the right things.” says David. “I think the GO3 range is a great way to help families take some small steps to be fit and healthy at affordable prices.” The GO3 range of food and supplements is available from Tesco stores nationwide.

HIP HOP TAKES THE RAP Rising star Akayzia Parker has turned her back on the US hip hop scene because of its hate filled lyrics and associated lifestyle. “I know plenty of kids that choose to live and die by gang rules,” says Akayzia. “They choose the lifestyle because their idols promote it.” Having worked with some of the biggest names in the rap business, including 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes, Akayzia has made her move into a new music genre, which she calls ‘urban folk’, in order to provide a positive voice for the UK’s troubled streets. Akayzia is currently working on her debut album Adamantium Heart. For more information, go to www.akayziaparker.co.uk.

PASSION FOR THE PLANET A new TV channel dedicated to our health, environment and personal development has been recently launched. It’s part of the Passion for the Planet group, which was started six years ago when it launched the UK’s first mainstream radio stations dedicated to providing solutions to help us all live greener and healthier lives. 90,000 people tune in each week via DAB (digital audio broadcasting) and the internet at www.passionfortheplanet.com. “The radio station has proved incredibly popular and people keep saying they’d love to see something similar on TV as well so it’s the logical next step,” says Passion’s managing director and co-founder Chantal Cooke (right). Passion for the Planet TV is available online www.passionfortheplanet.com.

CHRISTMAS COMFORT

HEROES FOR THE ANIMALS Twelve animal heroes, including one dog, have received prestigious awards for their outstanding contribution to animal welfare from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). The awards ceremony was hosted by Baroness Gale at the House of Lords and presented by IFAW patron, actress and model Lisa B. This year’s honours include awarding Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall as Campaigners of the Year, for their work on factory farmed chickens. “These are very special awards and it is great to be able to recognise so many deserved heroes,” says IFAW UK director, Robbie Marsland. “I hope this will inspire other people across the entire UK to help animals in need.”

Massage and complementary health therapists are urgently needed to volunteer their services to help homeless people in London over the festive season. Nine temporary centres will be set up in London by Crisis, the national homelessness charity, as part of the Christmas activity. The centres will provide vital companionship and hot meals for homeless and vulnerably housed people as well as essential services like health checks, housing advice, training and further education opportunities. To find out more about volunteering, call: 0207 426 3874, email volunteering@crisis.org.uk or apply online at www.crisis.org.uk/volunteering

Sarah Whittaker contemplates green initiatives afoot in the construction industry

Christmas can be a testing time – but only if you let it, says Selina di Girolamo

Building green futures

Goodwill to all

I know it’s the credit crunch, and doom and gloom and general economic meltdown is all around us, but I have noticed that on my street almost every house seems to be having some fairly serious building work done. Maybe everyone is reading property guru Sarah Beeny’s latest tome on how we should all improve our houses rather than move out of them so that when everything is back on an even keel we have something of more value – and in the meantime we get to enjoy it. There’s been a skip outside my house for the best part of six months, and it seems to fill up at an alarming rate. According to Defra, Britain’s construction industry produces 89.6 million tonnes of unwanted building materials and 28 million tonnes of it ends up in landfill every year – a large proportion of which could be reclaimed and recycled. I’ve just come across a great new company called Tiger Enterprises. They reclaim, recycle and re-use as much of this construction waste and excess as possible, which is fantastic, especially when you consider what a waste it is of the natural and irreplaceable resources used in manufacturing.

[

]

“According to Defra, 28 million tonnes of unwanted building materials from the British construction industry ends up in landfill every year”

flickr.com/photos/moonwire

Tiger Enterprises claim to collect all re-usable and recyclable building materials – unlike some companies that are only interested in the highly profitable architectural salvage. Reclaimed building materials are those that have been salvaged from the waste stream and reused in their original form, with minimal reprocessing. They may be cut to size, adapted, cleaned up or refinished, but they are fundamentally retaining their original properties. How about some reclaimed timber for some garden construction, or a reclaimed butler sink for a kitchen refit? Another great resource for any green building projects is GreenSteps, a company established to simplify the green marketplace for everyone. A small family-run business, GreenSteps supplies eco-friendly products through their online shop. GreenSteps can also provide technical support for eco-friendly property development and has a complete ecorefurbishment service available. GreenSteps advised and supplied KT Tunstall when she refurbished her eco London home. So, why not follow in the steps of the stars and have a go yourself? www.greensteps.co.uk www.reuseitdontloseit.co.uk – Tiger Enterprises For interiors advice please email Sarah at Sarah@bluelamb.co.uk

The festive season challenges my holistic parenting skills like no other. For weeks kindly neighbours, distant relatives and other well wishers ply my children with sugar laden mince pies, chocolate money and confectionery stuffed into stocking-shaped packaging produced by multinational companies that have a reputation for undermining breastfeeding. My angelic four-year-old can turn into a howling banshee in the time it takes to peel a non biodegradable plastic wrapper from an edible snowman, as witnessed by many Christmas shoppers in Hastings last week flickr.com/photos/pete4ducks (apologies all round). Each year I contemplate the balance between festive spirit and the conflict it creates within me as a mother. Is it rude to state my preferences for fairtrade, wooden or charity shop toys over the contents of the Argos catalogue for example? Surely everybody knows that my 11-year-old Tali, (a radical vegetarian pacifist whose heroes include Gandhi and Martin Luther King) is not going to want to find a replica automatic weapon under his locally–grown-in-a-well-managed-woodland-Yule-tree? And why oh why can I not find a pagan raw chocolate advent calendar?

[

“Each year I contemplate the balance between festive spirit and the conflict it creates within me as a mother”

]

Usually in the pursuit of peace and goodwill to all, I chill out a bit. I let the occasional dietary lapse and plastic pirate ship sneak in along with the non-toxic vegetable paints and Steiner-approved games. I draw the line at war toys and violent computer games, exchanging them when possible and “disappearing” them when not. I feel that it is ultimately more important to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and allowing that extends throughout our community and honours every act of generosity and grace no matter what form it takes. Within the pagan wheel of the year it is the formlessness of this season that makes it so special, the time when light is conceived within the womb of the long dark nights. The boys accompany Mike, my husband, to cut mistletoe in a local woodland. It is suspended from a beam and ritually lowered to the ground in our home accompanied by wishes and prayers to mark the beginning of our festivities. These are the stories that we share while potato printing onto Positive News to make wrapping paper, or cutting out silhouettes of Goddesses to stick onto Yule cards, and a few Bob the Builder figures and a sugar coated Santa cannot detract from that. In fact I believe they probably make our Christmas experience even more diverse and vibrant.

feast Andrew Kay plans a festive menu of ethical gourmet delights

Whatever your faith, whatever your life choices, Christmas is impossible to avoid. So why not embrace it? Make the day your own celebration and enjoy. Often an excuse for excess, seasonal celebratory food can be a pure joy, but if you are to make the most of things, then the art is in the planning. Where to start? Well my parents decreed that Christmas day was always a two-meal event and I couldn’t agree more. Two proper meals leaves space for chocolates and nuts, but it also releases the cook from the kitchen. So, I like to start the day with a good cooked breakfast: grilled bacon, sausage, black pudding, tomatoes and mushrooms, with chunks of bread and good butter. Don’t skimp on the fruit juices, buy something special and do the same with tea and coffee.

I, for one, have no time for turkey. Oh I know that these days you can get a quality bird, but who on earth wants that much bland meat? Who wants to get up at the crack of dawn to put it in the oven and then be tied to the damned beast all day on basting duty? No, my advice is ditch the turkey and go for game. This year chose venison: lean, healthy and packed full of flavour. A good cut, braised with great vegetables, can be prepared in advance and the aroma spreading through the house will be mouthwatering. I like to cook it with wine, but don’t do the meat the injustice of using plonk, treat it to a wine you would be happy to drink. Don’t make the mistake of drowning it in booze and masking the flavours, a glass or two should do the trick. The same goes for herbs and spicing. We are all to eager to over-season and lose the real taste of the meat. With it of course the vegetables, in the braise: chose sweet roots for flavour and on the side buttered cabbage or curly kale – easy and fast to prepare and cook. To follow, I am a traditionalist, Christmas pudding – just once a year. Buy as good as you can and with it I like brandy or rum sauce, but if you prefer cream or a brandy butter, go for it. After that, a big piece of glorious ripe cheese. Not one for selections, I like something like a

Vacherin, oozing and ripe, and with it great bread and good pickles. One good piece of cheese will keep better than six tiny pieces. All that done and dusted you now have the rest of the day to nibble on nuts, fruits, chocolates, truffles and sweetmeats. Here the choice is endless, as is the range of quality organic and fairtrade goodies. To drink? Well, champagne of course, whatever you believe in this is a celebration. To follow some great wines. Spend more and I can almost guarantee you will sip it slowly and it will last longer, we only gulp down plonk because it doesn’t taste good. Having gone down the organic route may cost a little bit more, but I believe you will eat less and feel a whole lot better. It also disposes of the horror of a fridge full of leftovers. The inevitable turkey curry or turkey soup, in which will lurk brussel sprouts meeting an undignified soggy end. Most of all, enjoy! Merry Christmas and a gourmet New Year.

Ethical shopping

www.thelatest.co.uk/wave

Stocking fillers Christmas is truly upon us, and the annual festive frenzy has begun. But finding novel and thoughtful gifts that not only save your pennies but the planet as well, can be a little tricky. Ellie Garwood has come to the rescue with some tips and pointers to help lend a little more peace and goodwill to your Christmas shopping experience Christmas is a time for goodwill – for eating, drinking and, of course, being merry. Unfortunately, all that merriment can lead to much unnecessary waste. According to environmental charity Waste Watch, over the festive season 83 square km of wrapping paper will end up in UK rubbish bins, and ultimately in landfill – enough to cover an area larger than Guernsey. We will also send approximately 150 million cards and packets daily over the period, and buy over 7.5 million Christmas trees. But our festive cheer needn’t be so damaging to the planet. With a little forward planning and a few savvy shopping tips, you can cut down on waste and help fund an array of worthy causes along the way. From recycled wrapping-paper to organic, fair trade choccy – Christmas needn’t cost the earth.

Ethical shopping sites Why not by-pass the annual high street shopping madness of packed streets and crazy last-minute dashes this year, and find your gifts online? If you cut out the drive into town, it’s easier on the environment, and knowing that you’re funding small scale ethical businesses is good for your conscience. For ethical presents, get started with www.naturalcollection.com, www.treehugger.com, www.nigelsecostore.com and www.ourecoworld.co.uk. Alternatively, buying second-hand and reusing potential landfill fodder is an excellent way to source your gifts. There are numerous trendy websites such as www.etsy.com – a quirky site full of individually hand-crafted items predominantly made from reused, recycled or fair trade components.

Charitable gifts Help fund vital projects around the world while also giving friends and family something meaningful, and individual, at Christmas. Packages on offer cater for a range of budgets, from the purchase of a goat or chickens for smaller purses, to larger projects such as the opportunity to pay for clean water for 40 people. Oxfam, World Vision, Christian Aid, Save the Children and Action Aid are just a handful of charities offering such gifts.

Organic toiletries The popularity of organic toiletries has soared over the last few years, with more and more consumers looking to by-pass products laden with chemicals and toxins. Dr Hauschka is often regarded as a field leader, producing biodynamic toiletries (biodynamic agriculture considers the interrelationship of the soil,

plants and animals, as well as seasons and even planetary alignment when growing raw ingredients – it is sometimes referred to as organic +). The company donates a percentage of its profits to charity, uses renewable energy at its headquarters and possesses a unique noshareholding policy, to help ensure the company’s high environmental and social standards are not compromised. Local crafts and foods We all know the importance of keeping it local, and with Christmas dinner marking the pinnacle of seasonal eating, what better time to honour local produce? If you haven’t visited your local farmers market yet, now is the perfect opportunity. Check out www.farmersmarkets.net for your nearest, and watch your food miles vanish before your very eyes.

Organic festive food Organic farming uses 26 percent less energy than non-organic agriculture, so whether you’re buying for a choccy fiend or someone who enjoys a good Christmas tipple, go organic where possible. For those whose festive partiality lies in a snifter, there is an increasing range of organic wines, ciders and beers available at most supermarkets. If you’re unable to find any locally check out, www.vintageroots.co.uk, which along with providing a vast range of organic beverages offers the customer a choice of vegetarian, vegan and biodynamic options too. Organic spirits require a bit more hunting down; but fear not, they do exist. Organic sherry and port can be found at www.naturalgrocery.co.uk. How about investing in some recycled glasses to drink out of too? Sets are available from www.greenerstyle.co.uk, www.fig1.co.uk and www.naturalcollection.com.

Fair trade underwear Pants to Poverty is probably the best-known brand of ethical undies, and for good reason. They are both organic, sweatshop free and offer a classic range of both men’s and women’s pants and boxer shorts. Check them out at www.pantstopoverty.com. Alternatively,

see www.greenknickers.org for padded cycling boxers, practical pants and even fancy wedding knickers. If it’s the humble stocking staple you’re after, fair trade, organic socks can be purchased from most ethical websites. Currently available from www.naturalcollection.com is a beautiful range of fairly traded, hand-crafted, chunky socks made in the High Andes and Himalayas. If time and skill allow why not go one better and knit your own personalised pair? Free patterns are available from www.knittingonthenet.com.

Recycled wrapping paper Before re-stocking on gift wrap, think about what’s already lying around your cupboards, attic or loft. When it comes to wrapping paper, hold no bars – the more inventive the better. Old material can be made into beautiful gift-bags and adorned with a festive ribbon, children’s presents can be wrapped in old comics or magazines; even last year’s calendar, old wallpaper or maps can be used. And to top it all off, how about natural trimmings of branch tips, fir leaves and pine cones? If time (or creative flair) isn’t on your side, 100 percent recycled wrapping paper can be bought from most ethical websites and a range of high street stores.

Trees – real vs fake Having reduced, reused and recycled (and sourced your gifts ethically, organically and locally), not to mention scoured the house for novel wrapping materials, you no doubt want to make sure your green goodies are housed under the most environmentally-friendly Christmas tree. Consensus seems to suggest natural trees are better. Although plastic trees can be re-used, natural trees are carbon neutral, decompose when thrown away and do not require large amounts of energy to produce – as plastic trees do. Where possible, it’s best to buy an organic or a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) regulated tree. And if you’re going to go all out, why not replant it in the garden after the big day? It’ll leave you with one less job for next year – and more time to bask in the warm-fuzzy feeling of having a squeaky clean eco-conscience. Ellie Garwood is available for freelance commission. Kann do attitude

Wellness coach Viv Craske says that happiness can come from within

When it comes to quality versus quantity, you can’t have one without the other, says Adam Kann

Quality or quantity?

Stone age sanity

[

“Unlike Western lives where change for change’s sake is embraced, the desert never changes – for 50,000 years it’s been a future-proofed same old-same old terrain”

]

I don’t know about you, but I am a bit of a perfectionist. Whenever I do something, I take great pride in doing it as well as humanly possible, whether it be cooking my dinner, cleaning my car or training for an event. As humans, we seem to be in a constant state of flux. Changing with the times seems to be a daily occurrence in these days of thunder and chaos. We are so caught up in it all that we find it a challenge to stay focused at the best of times, and lately, even I seem to be vulnerable to the demands of everyday life’s trivialities. I even bought ready-made meals recently while suffering from a vile and persistent chest infection.

[

“It’s important to distinguish between the need for quality and the need for quantity, and once we have done this everything else just seems to flow”

]

It seems to me that if we take pride in what we do, the outcome is almost always favourable. So how does this translate to the ageing process? Well if we eat quality foods, use quality products and spend quality time with quality people, surely this would lead to a long and fruitful life. So what role does quantity have to play in all this? Well, if we drink too much the liver will pack up, if we smoke too much the lungs will pack up and if we talk too much, we will never learn a damn thing! So, that’s pretty clear then. No! When it comes to exercise, there are times when quantity definitely reigns supreme. Are five good reps better than 12 clumsy ones? Absolutely, but what if we’re training for stamina and endurance? What good is it if we run the first 6k of a 10k race with perfect form and then run out of steam because our perfect form has taken it’s toll on the calf complex? If we don’t finish, we don’t finish and that’s it! Sometimes finishing is more important than how we ran the first half. Imagine the lasting, negative psychological effects of a non-finish. So when all’s said and done, it’s important to distinguish between the need for quality and the need for quantity, and once we have done this everything else just seems to flow. Remember, where quality requires complete focus, quantity requires sheer determination – but, as any successful individual will tell us: to be the best, we absolutely require both! In the depths of the Kalahari dessert live a people called the San. For 50,000 years these bush people have, until the past few decades, lived the life of Stone Age hunter-gatherers. The San live in the barren bush where food and water can be scarce, yet many of our own measures of health and happiness show the San to be doing somewhat better than us. Cancers, heart disease and obesity don’t exist, while people only work for around 15 hours each week. The San appear to be, if not happy, then content. Perhaps the cause of their wellbeing doesn’t lie in the simplicity of their life (since when is killing an antelope or finding water in the Kalahari simple?) but in their close relationship with the environment and loose pace of change. Unlike Western lives where change for change’s sake is embraced, the desert never changes – for 50,000 years it’s been a future-proofed, same-oldsame-old terrain. I’m not suggesting that the San don’t worry (they do) or that the answer to happiness lies in ignoring the world, but perhaps if we cherry-pick what’s important from the swarm of messages we receive, we too could be content. If the San find peace by only focusing on what’s immediately important to them (hunting, gathering, storytelling, their community), perhaps we can do the same by throwing out the TV and not buying newspapers. A year ago I did just that, and I’ve never been happier. Having just returned from a world disconnected from global politics, global culture and fears of global economic meltdown, I’d recommend switching off the outside world for a while and seeing what happens to your reality. Just watch out for the crocodiles… Viv Craske is a meta-medicine health coach, NLP practitioner and hypnotherapist based in Brighton. I’ve just got back from Botswana, Africa, where the locals think nothing of swimming in crocodile-inhabited rivers. The river is for play, for washing clothes – I even witnessed a baptism during my stay. The Botswanans’ map of reality seemed focused on the joy the river gave, while us Westerners prefer to focus on the things that could go wrong – like being the crocs’ tea (I swam in the pool instead). To the woman being cleansed in the water, with her friends singing and clapping, the river was the site of celebration. To us, we might imagine a crocodile lurking for a chance to chomp us in half with prehistoric precision. Same circumstances, different thoughts and feelings, showing us that reality is not what’s out there, but what we choose to focus on in our heads.

What is… Electrolysised water? Lewis Montague says growing older doesn’t have to mean accepting poor health as a fact of life The number one enemy the body has to contend with is degenerative disease – or chronic disease, as the allopathic brigade prefers to call it. Government statistics suggest that malignant tumours, heart attacks and strokes, diabetes and Parkinson’s disease are just a few of the numerous degenerative diseases that account for well over 80 per cent of deaths each year in the UK alone. You might say that for most of us, contracting some form of chronic disease is a natural occurrence as part of the ageing process – but the truth is, it needn’t be! In the main, degenerative disease is self-inflicted, primarily through diet, pollution and stress. These three factors can result in excess free radicals, an overly acidic body and a lack of oxygen, which produces an environment within our bodies that allows our cells to start breaking down; an environment in which disease can thrive. But what about genes, I hear you say? OK, some genes may play a part in you contracting a degenerative disease, but it only means you have a predisposition to contracting that disease if you produce the environment within the body for it to flourish. So, what can we do about this? Well, there are a number of things we need to do to start fighting back, but ultimately, it's all about defeating your current unhealthy bodily environment, and then maintaining a healthy bodily terrain to allow your immune system to do its job – sounds so simple doesn’t it! Well, it is. Diet, pollution, exercise and stress management all play a part in the fight for survival. But I want to focus on hydration, by way of electrolysised water. Electrolysised water from a water ionizer produces two types of water – ionized alkaline water and ionized acidic water. Alkaline water has a massive ability to neutralise free radicals in the body – producing a strong antioxidant effect. According to Dr Robert O Young (a celebrated research scientist), an overly acidic body is the prime cause of disease in the body. Ionized water generally has a pH (power of hydrogen) of between 9 and 10, making it very very alkaline, which enables it to start balancing the body’s overly acidic state towards the required alkalinity. Ionized water is also oxygen rich, thereby helping to redress the imbalance of depleted oxygen supplies in the body. Dr Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize for discovering the fact that a lack of oxygen in the body breaks down our cells, which allows cancer to thrive. The ionized acidic water is anti-bacterial. All of these benefits can come from a machine attached to your drinking water supply. For more information, visit www.theofficialwaterionizer.com

Abundant Living Steve Nobel uncovers a secret formula for realising your dreams

Daydream believer Most of you are probably familiar with the film The Secret, which introduced the idea that we can attract whatever we want in the outer world through changing the way we think and feel on the inside. The Secret, however, focused mainly on how to manifest material stuff like houses and cars, and completely missed out how to create more creativity, inspiration, liberation and joy. That is unless you believe that these feelings come only through physical possessions! When I speak about manifesting I am talking about attracting both tangible situations/material things, and also a sense of fulfiling the important values in your life. Manifesting can be a spiritual endeavour, in that it can be a sacred marriage of the material and spiritual realms. It is possible to create a life which is abundant as well as spiritually vibrant – that is, if you say it is possible. I have come up with a little formula to help you in the manifesting process. The equation to attract or create what you want, or in other words manifesting your dreams is as follows: When v = a clear and specific sense or vision of what you want And x = the belief that it is both possible and achievable And y = your inner sense that you deserve this miracle to happen, then… v + x + y = ‘bingo’ With vision, it is important to visualise yourself having this goal for five to 10 minutes a day, for at least seven days. What great feelings will this generate in you? The feeling of having the goal already is a vital step in

Wave business Wave talks to some small businesses with planet-changing ideas. This month it’s the turn of Laurent Robert of The Natural Alternative Decorating Centre What was the inspiration behind setting up the company? The Natural Alternative Decorating Centre has been created to provide you and the professionals with the best advice on natural interior decoration. So many people suffer from the amount of chemicals they use in their houses – from cleaning to decorating products – without knowing what to do about it. The idea behind The N.A.D.C. is not only to supply products, but also to inform the public on the pros and cons of what is on offer. N.A.D.C. has selected the best natural paint and wood coating for interiors and exteriors, and has found the best bamboo flooring system, on the English market, as well as beautiful reclaimed teak furniture. Our highly-trained team is always ready to listen to you as an individual, giving you advice on the best solution for your interior. Our motto is: The earth is not a present from our parents, but a loan from our children. What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced? The biggest challenge was to get involved with the Brighton Jubilee Library development. We realised the architects responsible for the Brighton library, and many other award-winning buildings around the world had put their trust in us, and we had to show we could deliver an excellent product, on time, and with the right support. We did really well – so well in fact that we were then endorsed by LCE architect.

the process. If you find visualisations difficult you can use a positive affirmation or mantra to get you into the space of feeling what it would be like to have what you want. The next stage is to examine what you believe about having or creating this goal. If you find that you do not believe you can do this, then you might need a little help – such as coaching. I have found that Theta Healing is a very effective system for changing beliefs in a matter of seconds rather than hours. This formula will work in many situations, but if you want to really be advanced then you can add another ingredient. You can add z which equals a workable strategy of action. You don't always need a clear strategy up front. The important thing to know about action is that it usually takes small and persistent steps. On-going action helps to convince your unconscious self that you mean business and that you really are willing to reach and receive this goal. Please remember that the most important thing with manifesting is to have fun doing it. ➜Steve Nobel is an author, coach and a director of Alternatives, St James Church, Piccadilly, London W1. To register for your free daily prosperity thought go to www.stevenobel.com. Steve is also available for Life Changes coaching sessions. Please visit the website for details. What’s been your biggest success? The biggest success has been to make our customers appreciate the difference between BIOFA natural paints, a truly professional natural product, and a pseudo organic ‘soup‘. We’re pleased to know that our customers are now fully aware of the products out on the markets and they always come back to us – we have created an excellent working relationship with our customers. This is a success. Who are your heroes? Well if I had to have heroes they would have to be my team: Corinna and Lou, who have been running N.A.D.C., dealing with all aspects of the shop, and still manage to have a family life. Hats off to you girls! Also my Mum and Dad for their hard work, throughout. And last, but not least, Serge Gainsbourg, who through his work has managed to restore a sense of pride into a whole generation. ➜For more information visit www.biofa.co.uk, or call Laurent on 01273 685800, email shop@naturaldecoratingcentre.co.uk

wave stays in Book, CD & DVD reviews by Elizabeth Holmes The New Secret Language of Dreams: The Illustrated Key to Understanding the Mysteries of the Unconscious

Gut Feelings: Short Cuts to Better Decision Making

David Fontana (Duncan Baird Publishers, ISBN 9781844836956) We’re all dreamers to a greater or lesser extent, but do we have any idea what our elaborate and mysterious nocturnal life actually means, if anything? Are they really providing us with privileged glimpses into the more hidden corners of our subconscious mind? David Fontana thinks so, and here offers a fresh approach to dreaming with examples and guidance on how to tease out underlying symbolism.Wonderfully illustrated and utterly accessible, at an accessible price too (£16.99).

Gerd Gigerenzer (Penguin: ISBN 9780141015910) At last, a great book about trusting instincts that’s anchored in what’s real experience for the majority of us. Rather than just saying, in as many ways as possible, that trusting instincts is a good thing to do, Gerd analyses the techniques that people use to make good decisions and shows us how we can make better decisions ourselves. The key is to trust on matters that are difficult to predict where little information is available. It’s a fascinating ‘un-put-down-able’ read, perfect for a lazy Boxing Day afternoon.

A Jazz and Blues Christmas (CD)

Times have Changed (Red Hat Remix)

Various artists (Allen Lane, Putumayo World Music P285-SL) What a fantastically uplifting, gorgeously groovy festive celebration! Chuck away any dusty old ‘Now’ offerings and stick this on your iPod for an ultracool Christmas chill-out courtesy of BB King, Charles Brown, Ray Charles and the Mighty Blue Kings to name just a few. This is one compilation that will have you reaching for your favourite hot toddy and settling back to watch the fire flames dance as you gently fill with festive spirit! Enjoy! It’s an absolute treat. And for any jazz loving friends, Women of Jazz, also from Putumayo (P286-SL) would make a perfect stocking filler. Truly original and sublime performances from Stacey Kent, Madeline Peyroux, Etta Jones and sisters might make this one a very hard gift to give away.

Sung by Leona Lewis (Jambo Records, Available to download from a range of digital download services including Amazon.com) It’s been attracting media attention for some time, but now a stellar version sung by Leona Lewis has been released. Songwriter and producer team Dan Karrouze and Rupert Garvey wrote the song with an R’n’B voice in mind before auditioning Leona amongst 500 other hopefuls in London in 2006. Leona was chosen and recorded the track at Silent Earth’s Sussex studios. Just three months later, Simon Cowell was telling everyone that Leona was one of the world’s best vocalists on The X Factor! If you’re a Leona fan, you’re bound to want to add this to your collection, and just relish the panache with which Leona has made the track her own.

The Hidden Spirituality of Men: Ten Metaphors to Awaken the Sacred Masculine

Bake: From Cookies to Casseroles Fresh from the Oven

Matthew Fox (New World Library, ISBN 9781577316077) For any men needing a challenge, Matthew Fox’s book is the one to go for. Urging you to take a critical look within, he offers ten compelling metaphors and archetypes designed to liberate, challenge and wake up men’s authentic masculinity. This elegant book helps to enable an image of healthy masculinity to emerge in an age when reptilian behaviours, says Fox, are repressing men’s (particularly young men’s) natural desire for spirituality. All in all, a powerful wake up call and incredibly important guide.

Rachel Allen (Collins, ISBN 9780007529700) Freshly baked goodies simply cannot be beaten, especially in the depths of winter when being cheered by the comfort and joy of home made treats beats just about anything! There are superb ideas here for savouries and sweets, all easily achievable for anyone with weighing scales and certainly not challenging to the budget in these credit crunched times. Rachel’s accessible TV style translates really well on the page shows that she has her priorities absolutely right! Also from Collins is the wonderfully authoritative and beautifully illustrated Mushroom Miscellany by Patrick Harding (ISBN 9780007284641).

The Scandinavian Cookbook

Ollie’s Ski Trip

Trina Hahnemann (Trina Hahnemann, ISBN 9781844006137 ) You may not be completely inspired by all that emerges from Scandinavia in terms of style and design, but this is a truly enchanting exploration into the foods of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, with their dramatically shifting daylight conditions and strong agricultural and fishing traditions. What’s so compelling about this book is the way the food is embedded in the land, reflected by its seasonal organisation. This is light and modern, packed with nourishing dishes as well as world-famous classics such as Danish pastries and butter cookies. And best of all, the ingredients are familiar and accessible, yet originally combined and the recipes actually work! The whole thing – narrative, photography, direction – is a true Scandinavian experience far beyond being a simple cookbook.

Elsa Beskow (Floris Books, ISBN 9780863156472) This delightful mini-version of Elsa’s classic picture book is just perfect for the winter season for the wavelets in your life. Six-year-old Ollie is given his first pair of real skis and as soon as the snow starts to fall he sets off on an adventure to find the King of Winter. Along the way he meets Jack Frost, the King of Winter and eventually Mrs Thaw, closely followed by Spring, in her carriage pulled by butterflies. Gorgeously illustrated, this is a really charming read from a time when life was perhaps a little less complicated. If you like Ollie’s Ski Trip, take a look at All Around the Year by the same author (ISBN 9780863156489) packed with verses for young children and delicate illustrations of the joys and features of each month.

How green am I? Netty Wendt is gearing up for a credit crunch Christmas – and she’s getting creative

Crafty gifts When I was 10, I made my grandad a bookmark from flowers I’d pressed. He never used it. Years later, after his death, we found it was one of the few sentimental items he’d kept in a shoe box along with letters – and a photo of two women who in today’s terminology would be described as ‘right mingers’. On closer inspection, we realised they were actually a young grandad and his mate Terry in drag, which tickled me no end. My point is, no matter how small, if you’ve given your time and your love, it will never be lost on the happy recipient.

[

“I’ll never forget the look on Mum’s face one Mother’s Day, as I presented her with her very own Tracey Island”

]

I used to love making presents and cards for people – I get the arty crafty influence from my grandad who would often paint faces on our eggs for breakfast. A lovely idea except for when they were fried. I was a thick kid and didn’t even know what sticky-back plastic was, but I’d become giddy with excitement at the prospect of making Mum a Blue Peter-inspired jewellery box or pen holder, and I’ll never forget the look on her face one Mother’s Day as I presented her with her very own Tracey Island. I’ve decided that this Christmas I’m going back to my crafty ways, which I’m sure will strike terror into the hearts of those who know me. I really feel the need to make my Christmas a greener affair this year. And my phone bill (which rivals the national debt of a small country) has just been put in a drawer until I’ve sold that kidney. It’s official, I haven’t got as much money as I had last year and what time and money I do have I don’t want to spend schlepping up and down the high street panic buying tat. Nope, this year I’m making my own. The average person spends about half a million pounds on cards and prezzies every Christmas – this is not an official statistic, it’s what it feels like. My gifted cross-dressing grandad taught me to make Scottish fudge, the most fattening and delicious substance in the universe. It would make a super present, provided I don’t stuff myself with the lot and wind up in A and E. Anything awful round the house will be wrapped and given to someone I don’t like – they probably gave it to me in the first place anyway. I’m saving trees by recycling old paper, and if it says ‘Happy Birthday’ I’ll just add ‘Jesus’ to it.

December’s stars by Val Aviv

Aries

Leo

Sagittarius

Your public profile is this month’s hidden agenda: remember that everyone’s eyes are upon you. The only way to become truly successful is to think and believe big! Courage is what will set you apart.

Your enthusiasm’s being seen from the moon with dazzling energy bursting from your very seams. This could be one of the most exciting, expressive and creative times. Use it well, while the inspiration is pronounced.

Some say you are boisterous, courageous or heroic, yet none have understood just to what heights you will leap given the focus, the determination and the stamina. Act now, while unstoppable Mars is driving you.

Taurus

Virgo

Capricorn

Concerns regarding joint finances should be brought to light. Although the temptation is to take a chance and be impulsive, remember to assess any potential risks against the back drop of your long-term goals.

You’re verging on the tip of a new life challenge. While love keeps its binding promise, you’re long-term goals are growing. You’re soon to begin to understand what responsibilities might come with receiving recognition.

Surely the purpose of realising our limitations is to help us identify our goal. Often we are the ones to impose our own self-fulfilling limitations. Reflect on your beliefs. Do they take you forwards?

Gemini

Libra

Aquarius

As this full moon in Gemini heralds highly charged and explosive forces for good or evil at work, especially in relation to partnerships, keep your wits about you and don’t burn bridges while implementing change.

Your light-hearted ruler is making headway into a fun-loving house. Give yourself a break and make time to do the things that please you. Get out and mingle – the world needs your input.

You’re a sociable creature who needs constant mental stimulation. Yes, you like informative exchanges and heated debates, but do you like the challenge of confrontation? Enjoy youthful Mars’s rather rowdy yet exhilarating and uplifting visit.

Cancer

Scorpio

Pisces

While your creativity blossoms in the shadows, the demanding world will have its wicked way and insist you keep to a proactive regime. Give birth to a new project and watch as it snowballs magnificently.

If hidden feelings over joint finances aren’t verbalised by the full moon, it might mean there are none to contend with. Privately your self-worth should rise with positive vibes being felt about the house.

You’re making one heck of an impression at the moment. Carry on down this road and you’ll end up in Successville! Your boldness, courage and flare is winning points, just don’t stomp too loudly.
