At the time of writing, my home-town of Brighton has been splashed liberally with glorious sunshine for several weeks now. As I donned my sunnies at the weekend and took in the glittering sea, the sailboats bobbing on the azure waves and families frolicking at the water’s edge, I wondered how on earth anyone could want to be anywhere else. ‘Nowhere in the world,’ says travel writer Bill Bryson, ‘is there a landscape more lovely to behold, more comfortable to be in, more artfully worked, more visited and walked across and gazed upon than the countryside of England.’ Besides our gifts of natural beauty, Great Britain is rife with avant-garde, creative genius, and our art galleries, museums, concert halls and fashion stores are testament to this. There was a brief burst of patriotic pride when Labour came to power in 1997. Amid dreams of a bright new British dawn, the media coined the term ‘Cool Britannia’, and churned out an avalanche of glossy articles celebrating Britpop, Britart, Britfilm and Britfood as the leading edge of popular culture and taste. Ben & Jerry’s even brought out a Cool Britannia ice cream flavour. The Britfrenzy may have faded away with the passing of the millennium, but those uniquely British qualities and strengths are still with us, and I sometimes wish we were more comfortable with feeling proud of ourselves in this country. Perhaps it would help with our litter problem. Bill Bryson is spear-heading the ‘Stop The Drop’ campaign (see www.cpre.org.uk for more details) and meanwhile the ‘Capital Clean Up’ campaign is gathering pace in London, with council-run initiatives aimed at empowering people to look after their own local environments. A collection of one thousand plastic bags in Trafalgar Square, shockingly, represented just one per cent of all litter dropped in the city every single day. The only British characteristic Bryson finds exasperating, apparently, is lack of motivation. “Of course litter isn’t up there with Darfur or curing cancer,” he says. “But it shows how little we care about our quality of life.” But it isn’t all gloom and despondency. Britain is, says Bryson, still the most beautiful, extraordinary place.” And with this in mind, perhaps it’s time to take better care of our green and pleasant land, and to get out there this summer and really make the most of what we have on offer here. Picking up the paper now, I see that what I had in fact written was an embarrassingly boring and nonsensical rant about being in a large crowd of people in New York all taking our socks off. Quite how I thought this would make for an interesting, thoughtprovoking piece I don’t know, but it left me pondering the fleetingness of inspiration and creativity, and how rarely am I struck by those beautiful moments when you can feel your brain fizzing and a really good idea or lyrical phrase appears. No, hopefully I will be able to combine the essentials of everyday living (watching The Apprentice, burning pancakes, shooing the cat out of the bath) with a steady flow of creative juice. Or at least a slow drip, drip. And one day, when exhaustion recedes and my days are filled with tranquillity I might just get round to finishing that screenplay I started in 2001.

Rather complacently I sat down to write this column thinking I’d already written it. A couple of weeks ago I awoke (or rather was woken, by a small, bleary pirate brandishing various weapons) and was immediately struck by the urgent need to scribble down the dream I had just had, convinced it would make a fantastic column for Wave. My husband reacted to my sudden burst of creativity by leaping out of bed and hunting for a biro while I clung on to the key points of my dream. Ignoring the steady onslaught of blows from my two-year-old’s plastic pistol, I earnestly wrote two pages of searingly insightful prose, then rolled over and went back to sleep. Job done.
perhaps it was a sign that I need to listen more to my subconscious, and maybe one day something poetic and marvellous will appear. I’m not proposing that my future columns will be renditions
Feel great this summer If you want to look good and feel great this summer, now’s the time to take action. Don’t wait until a week – or even a month – before you go on holiday before deciding to lose a few pounds, get fit or quit smoking. The best time to start is now. Allow yourself to be inspired by well-known phrases such as, ‘There’s no time like the present’, “Carpe Diem” (seize the day) and ‘Be in the moment’. If you feel daunted by the prospect of taking positive action for your health and well-being, get some help – complementary medicine has a lot to offer, particularly in assisting with motivation. And if you’re feeling stressed and can’t wait for that hardearned holiday to begin, why not treat yourself in the meantime? It doesn’t have to be expensive, and there are plenty of free ways to dissolve that pent-up nine-to-five
tension: why not take a stroll along the beach, through the sun-dappled woods or along the clifftops? Have an extra long lunch break with a friend, lie on the grass and watch the clouds drift by. Try an hour of yoga, pilates or tai chi. Treat yourself to a day off work (or even a half day if time is tight). Remember, no-one ever gets to their death bed wishing they’d spent more time at the office. What better way to wind down and relax than a FREE PAMPER DAY at Equilibrium Health Centre? You’ll receive two fabulous treatments of your choice plus a delicious vegetarian GM-free, two-course meal from a varied menu. Less than two minutes from Lewes Railway Station, and set in a 200-year-old listed building with oak beams, wall-to-wall wool carpeting and 100 per cent organic paint throughout, Equilibrium is open seven days a week. The clinic’s team of 32
dedicated professional practitioners are waiting to help you – the winner can choose either treatments for relaxing and pampering, or therapies to diagnose and address particular health conditions. A full list of available options can be found at www.equilibrium-clinic.com Call or email now and mention Wave for your FREE entry into the Pamper Day Prize Draw to win two great Equilibrium treatments and your two-course meal at Seasons. Call 01273 470955, email info@equilibrium-clinic.com or visit www.equilibrium-clinic.com to add your name and email address to the prize draw (via newsletter sign-up box). The draw will be made on 30 June and the prize can be taken anytime in 2009. Equilibrium Health Centre, 16 Station Street, Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 2DB.

Selina di Girolamo says a little creativity is all it takes to create a magical, eco-friendly kids party
Blissed out
Party planners
“He who has so little knowledge of human nature as to seek happiness by changing anything but his own disposition will waste his life in fruitless efforts and multiply the grief which he purposes to remove.” Samuel Johnson
As my sunny little boy turns five this month, we are hatching birthday plans. Childrens’ parties have a huge impact on the environment and to me this feels incongruent with my hopes for my children, and the world I trust they will create. Paper invitations, junk food, plastic party bags and additive-laden cakes are some of the eco-nightmares that I intend to avoid. Planning a sustainable birthday celebration is easy in the summer when the festivities can take place outside. Woodland parties are wonderful, children love building camps, playing hide and seek, climbing trees and singing around a campfire. One need only email the invitations, provide the food and nature does the rest. Beaches, parks, meadows and hillsides are also perfect, whilst a large tent, yurt or tipi can make an enchanting weatherproof alternative. Storytelling, musical instruments, dressing up and natural arts and crafts spark the imagination and can be based around a theme. Instead of cheap and nasty party bags I send children home with magic stones (crystals), seashells, beads and tiny bells, or alternatively a flowerpot and some seeds. I usually make the birthday feast myself, ensuring that it is organic and healthy but there are lots of organic bakers that will be happy to supply a birthday cake to order, and organic pizza slices, fresh fruit and vegetable crisps are readily available for a delicious picnic.
In 1755, Samuel Johnson published The Dictionary of the English Language. Despite nine years of arduous study, he knew that happiness is something you cultivate rather than something you wait to happen to you. Being unhappy is creating a false prison for yourself underpinned by redundant beliefs – beliefs that I’d like to help you destroy right now.
[
“Happiness is something you cultivate rather than something you wait to happen to you”
]
Unhappy belief three: Happiness is being not unhappy. If you believe that happiness is purely the absence of unhappiness, then you’re spending lots of energy measuring your life against things you don’t want. If you want to be happy, how about noticing the small moments of happiness that make each day, like a hug from a friend, the sun on your face, or the sound of the sea. Now make a list of them and plan to have at least three to five of these happiness-building moments every day. If you really want to encourage planetary consciousness in your guests you could request pre-loved gifts only. Little ones really don’t mind whether their toys are second hand and older children feel really proud to be doing their bit to combat global warming. Another option is to state in the invitation that your child would like art materials, or kinesthetic toys like hoops, balls, skipping ropes etc. Many parents would love some guidance to ensure that their presents are really useful and enjoyable. This year, Indigo’s birthday falls during a festival that will be full of his friends, live entertainment, an arts and craft tent, juggling lessons, organic food and lots of beautiful countryside. All I need to do is bake the cake. flickr.com/photos/foreignoffice
Unhappy belief two: “I can be happy when…” This is an excellent way of putting off happiness. “When I have the car, the partner or the job I want… then I can be happy.” If you think this way, give it up. Aim for things you desire, but don’t use not having them as an excuse to be unhappy until then.
flickr.com/photos/maniya
Unhappy belief one: People make us feel bad. If you find yourself saying things like, “She made me feel bad” or “He made me cry” it’s time for a wake-up call: no one can make you do anything. While you can’t be responsible for others’ behaviour, you can be responsible for your own emotional reactions to events. If you’re feeling sad, afraid, blue, down, worried or upset, my recommendation would be to find a good therapist to show you how to get rid of them and let the natural happiness shine through.

significant effect on global warming. Judging by my local pub, it’s not just cows blowing holes in the ozone layer. Better dig out that mask again. By 2050 the government aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 80 per cent. I don’t know how they aim to achieve this, given the recent legislation on airport expansion. My mum lives under the Heathrow flight path, so maybe one day soon she’ll find herself hanging her washing out in the middle of the runway. I’ll be able to wave to her as I take off. On the home front, indoor plants clean air through photosynthesis. The spider plant doesn’t remove spiders as I once thought, but it does remove formaldehyde from the air within a 30 foot radius. If we all did our bit to tackle pollution, maybe one day that something in the air will be our hands when we say: “Look what I helped to do.”
How green am I? Netty Wendt is venting her views on pollution and is turning the air green
“All I need is the air that I breathe…” Well, that’s not strictly true, although I did laugh recently at the doctor who noted a patient’s cause of death as ‘Lack of breath’. Air is like sex – it’s not always good and you’ll soon notice when you’re not getting any. Of course, breathing is only pleasant if the air isn’t polluted. I remember walking into my local pub the day after the smoking ban came into effect and the smell of farts and staleness was so overpowering I nearly collapsed. Luckily I was brought round by the smell of a free drink. It made me realise just how much cigarette smoke I must have been passively inhaling if it had managed to mask that ghastly miasma. The Clean Air Act was brought in to protect the lungs of people like my mum, who in the 1950s was forced to walk to school in ‘pea soup’. Well, that’s what I thought she said. Turns out she actually meant a ‘pea souper’, which was a deadly smog that choked thousands of people to death. In this green and pleasant land, air pollution still kills ten times more people than road accidents. I’ve often seen kids in pushchairs at car exhaust level and wondered how their little lungs coped. As a cyclist in London’s West End, I used to wear a mask. I looked like Darth Vader but at least my chest didn’t resemble the inside of a Dyson vacuum cleaner. If it’s not cars and chimneys polluting the air, it’s cows passing wind and sending methane into the atmosphere at such alarming rates it may have a

Abundant Living Staring out of the window may be more useful than you might have thought, says Steve Nobel
For thousands of years our ancestors worked with dreaming. Shamans would journey into the spirit worlds to gain help, healing and advice. Nowadays metaphysicians teach creative visualisation and the secrets of attracting the reality you want. In my life I have found that dreaming works. I have dreamed new jobs and relationships into being, as well as more joy, love, success and vitality. You can learn how to dream more of what you want into your life and to un-dream what you do not want. Here are three ideas to get you going: Know what you want – mostly we have been trained from an early age to think about what we do not want which will somehow, by a process of elimination bring us to what we want. This method does not work, and if you have been practicing it for some time now you will have discovered that it only brings you more problems. Spend some time each day thinking about your dreams and goals. Imagine the end result of your creation – when you know what you want then the next step is to spend some time focusing on those dreams. Imagine the end result of what you want, that means imagine that you already have your dream. See it as a movie on a screen in front of you
flickr.com/photos/8078381@N03
Dreaming your world into being
and see yourself enjoying your dream, then just step into the screen and imagine experiencing your dream with all your senses. The more intense and vividly you can do this the better. Then just let go. Do this for several days, then just let go of your dream. You can repeat steps one and two after having a break and then again just let it go, and give your dream no further thought for a while. Non-attachment is a vital step in attracting and dreaming what you want into being. If you want to know more about dreaming, then listen to a free audio called Dreaming Your World into Being. Wave business Wave talks to some small businesses with planet-changing ideas. This month: holistic business guru Mark Walsh What was the inspiration behind setting up the company? I decided that life is short, and I started the company in order to do what I love and get paid for it. I had been working in training for a charity in areas of conflict abroad like East Africa and the slums of Brazil, and was feeling burnt-out and fedup. A friend in the USA sat me down in front of a video of Bill Myers interviewing Joseph Campbell, who wrote about myth and the hero’s journey, and that inspired me. I had the idea for the company the next day while in and out of sleep on the plane home. Haven’t stopped since. What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced? What I do is bring the heart and creativity of the ‘alternative world’ together with the mainstream. This ‘human business’ is a fine line to walk, and the challenge is often to put leading-edge things we do like the Embodied Management Training into an accessible language. Aside from that, the challenges I
face are the same as any other small business owner – financial rollercoastering, marketing with a limited budget and self management – energy, moods, relationships...business is a personal practice and I work on embodying what I teach. What’s been your biggest success? The first time I saw the type of training I do succeed was at a peace building project with people from the Middle East, hosted by the UN in the no-man's-land between North and South Cyprus. It wasn't just my success, but I was a part of it and that inspired me. I enjoy seeing senior NHS managers meditate away their stress, delight in talking about feelings with hardcore executives and love training regular office folks to work with their bodies to become better leaders. Who are your heroes? I’m grateful to many associates and teachers. But heroes... Comedian Bill Hicks. Aikido founder Morhei Ueshiba. My family. Anyone who hasn’t given up.

Asking a simple question such as, “Am I honouring my relationship with myself?” Can save an immense amount of heartache and open up endless possibilities.
