here’s an old American song “There’s No Business Like Show Business”. Whether that’s true or not, permit me to modify it. For Aftermarket International, which is distributed at 15 trade shows around the world, we say “There’s No Business Like the Trade Show Business”.
This is our final issue of 2018 and it has hard copy distribution at 5 events: AAPEX, SEMA, ATRA, Automechanika Shanghai and HDAW ‘19.

We have found over the years attendees at various worldwide aftermarket events are very involved in our dynamic industry, so they make for an excellent readership of our brand. And they also are the audience that our client base (marketers/advertisers) want to engage with. All of the above events are covered editorially in this issue. Additionally we have two technical articles, courtesy of Technical Editor Bob Freudenberger: Diagnosing “Rough” Idle: No one likes to hear engine “knocking” or other suspicious sounds. Rough Idle is part of that, and can be a symptom of more serous problems. Bob explains how to handle. Maintenance Programs Are the Repair Shop Owner’s Lifeline: We all want to take care of ourselves, strive to make sure we are up to part, both physically and mentally, so we see physicians regularly…or at least we should. Persuading the motor vehicle owners of the world to do the same with their cars, trucks and other modes of transportation is important too. Bob gives his input on this. Please take note, this is our thrid year of preparing this special “double” issue. For those of you reading us in print, you’ll see we have combined the English and Spanish editions, the only time of the year we do this. If you are reading us digitally, the issues are not combined.

Editor’s Note
No security system, no start.
More and More Systems Integration Seemingly unrelated things can affect each other
S
ometimes the two technical features we give you in every issue of Aftermarket International overlap, which is the case this time with our articles Finding the Cause of Uneven Idle and Your Financial Lifeline: Maintenance Services. That’s because the systems of today’s cars are so intertwined and integrated. Certainly, idle quality issues are often the result of neglected maintenance. Some examples: We once worked on a late-1990s Acura CL Coupe. The young woman who owned it was so frustrated with the car she was almost ready to set fire to it. It seems that for no known reason the factory security system would activate -- beeping horn and flashing headlights. She’d park it while attending classes and return to find people in the neighborhood up in arms over the disturbance. “Something’s wrong in its little brain,” she said. “I don’t need a security system. I don’t even want it.” So, until I could find the time to investigate what was triggering the alarm so randomly, I thought I could simply pull the fuse and send her on her way. Found the right fuse, removed it, and . . . no-start! Disabling the security system also disabled the fuel system. Apparently, Honda Motor Company didn’t want anybody driving around without the benefit of theft protection. Again, integration, but this seemed somewhat high-handed to me. Where does an engineer on the other side of the world get off essentially ordering us not to drive a car because one of its non-essential features isn’t working? By the way, the trouble turned out to be a bad door lock switch, which wasn’t easy to identify. I once encountered a 2002 SUV that had scary ABS (Antilock Brake System) troubles. The pedal would sometimes feed back vigorously even though the pavement was dry, and the driver reported having to use both feet to stop at a drive-up ATM. Of course, the first thing I thought of was a damaged wheel speed sensor, but I couldn’t get the part instantly. So, I asked the vehicle’s owner if she would be willing to risk driving without ABS until I could fix it. She said, “By all means. Haven’t I been driving cars without that for decades?” I couldn’t argue with that, so, liability notwithstanding, I decided to disable the ABS. Nope. Just as with the Acura, the engine wouldn’t start. At least in this case it was because of something a lot more important than the lack of theft prevention. Another story is more to the point where maintenance is concerned. An Asian car powered by an OHC four was towed into the shop one of my friends owns. The engine had stopped dead and wouldn’t restart. Sure enough, it was a snapped timing belt. But when my friend tried to install a new one, he found that the camshaft was seized in its bearings. No oil in the crankcase! Would you ever think that a lubrication failure would break a T-belt? I also recall another SUV that came into a shop with numerous trouble codes and various driveability malfunctions. To make a long story short, the tailpipe had gotten bent upward so that the exhaust stream melted the insulation on part of the electrical harness. The diagnostician never would’ve found the problem if he hadn’t put the vehicle on a lift and taken a look around underneath to get the “big picture.” Then there’s the CAN (Controller Area Network), the vehicle bus standard that allows microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other without a central computer. If one of the signals is lost or faulty, you’re going to be faced with a sophisticated diagnostic challenge that’s far beyond the scope of this column. Suffice it to say here that the effects may be far-ranging and even counter-intuitive. So, whenever you’re doing troubleshooting (the most intellectually-demanding part of our profession) don’t be afraid to think far afield from the system that seems to be the most obvious.

Uneven Idle
If the timing belt was recently replaced, there’s a good chance that it was installed out of synchronization by one or two teeth, thus producing improper valve timing. If there’s a balance shaft present, that can be out of time also and cause roughness.

n today’s driveability troubleshooting, most of the emphasis is on electronic engine management. Generally, and in this case in particular, we consider that the wrong approach. There are still many problems that are not caused by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and its network. In fact, we believe that in most cases the trouble lies in much less highly-technical systems and components. In other words, in the basics. Rough idle is one of these.
QUIZ THE CUSTOMER, THEN LOOK AND LISTEN Don’t start with any testing until you get the “Big Picture.” Take the time to ask the customer some questions: • Is the idle the same whether the engine is warm or cold? • Does it get worse on rainy days? 8
Aftermarket International
• Did this condition come on gradually or suddenly? • If a belt-driven OHC is present, has the belt snapped and been replaced recently? • Has anyone else done any service on the engine? Dig deeper if you’re not satisfied with the clarity of his or her answers. Now for your personal observations. Does the vehicle’s overall condition and/or the huge number on the odometer lead you to believe that the engine is simply worn out? Raise the hood and take a careful look around under a good light. Is there anything obvious such as a shorted spark plug cable, a disconnected vacuum line, a perforated duct between the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor and the throttle body, etc? Start the engine and note if it cranks unevenly or takes a long time to fire up, both of which are indications of poor compression.

We don’t often see this kind of damage anymore, so burned valves are not as high on the priority list as they used to be.
WHICH HOLE? In cases where there is a definite miss, the next step is to isolate the cylinder that’s not firing. The traditional method of doing this is to use an insulated tool to disconnect the spark plug wires individually to see if one in particular has little or no effect on idle quality, which means it’s no longer doing its job. On COP (Coil Over Plug) ignition systems that don’t have conventional high-tension wires, it’s still possible to do this test by inserting conductive tubes (kits are available with brass spacers) between the top terminals of the spark plugs and the coil assembly, then shorting the tube to ground with an insulated tool or jumper.
Most modern electronic engine management systems have the capability of identifying which cylinder is misfiring built into their self-diagnostics. For example, the OBD II (On Board Diagnostics II) system that has been around for two decades will cause a scan tool to display not only which cylinders are at fault, but also the actual number of misfires that have occurred per cylinder (Mode 6). Some of the automakers’ proprietary diagnostics have the same capability. If you have indeed located a lazy cylinder or two, you can be fairly certain that the cause of the poor running condition is not in the electronic engine management system, overall air/fuel ratio, EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve, ignition primary circuit or distributor, or valve timing. What you should concentrate on are those things that can keep one cylinder from firing. Start with ignition, which is the least expensive and easiest possibility to fix. If you have an analog ignition scope, now a new is the time to use it. Otherwise, connect Installing set of spark a spark tester to the spark plug wire that plugs will often goes to the dead cylinder, and crank the cure a rough idle complaint. engine. If you see no spark, yet the engine runs, either the wire or the distributor cap is faulty. If spark is present, remove the spark plug. You may find that it is badly fouled or even bridged with deposits. Or, perhaps the gap has grown too large for the available voltage. Install a new spark plug and see if the idle improves.
PROOF OF PRESSURE
OBD II-compliant scan tools have a Mode 6 that counts the number of misfires per cylinder, so a big number will point you to a problem.

If lack of spark is not the culprit, suspect compression. You could run a dynamic compression test on an engine analyzer, if you happen to have one available. But it is our opinion that there is no more definitive diagnostic procedure than the traditional dry/wet compression test. Naturally, check the bad cylinder first. A reading below 5 kg/cm2 (70 psi) should be suspect. Certainly, you’ve done this tried-and-true test in your career, but there are subtleties in the procedure that many technicians have never thought about. For example, you should record the first and fourth jumps of the needle. In a healthy engine, the first jump will be half or more of the fourth. A uniform leak from something like a burned, stuck, or bent valve will cause pressure to build gradually starting at a very low number for the first pulse, and not reaching anything near the specification. Worn-out or broken rings, on the other hand, will produce a big first bounce, but not reach the specification either as they’ll start to leak. October 2018

UNEVEN IDLE
It makes sense at this juncture to do all the other cylinders and compare. With the engine warm, remove the spark plugs, check each cylinder (crank long enough for the gauge to receive at least four pressure pulses, and hold the throttle open), and write down the results. On those found to be weak, pump in a few squirts of motor oil, wait two minutes for it to spread, then check again. If the reading rises a great deal, the oil is temporarily sealing a set of worn out or broken rings, whereas in cases where the compression goes up only a small amount, the valves are leaking. If you are not sure how much of a rise would be normal, do a couple of the healthy cylinders and see what kind of increase you get there. But there’s more to interpreting compression readings. Similar low readings on two adjacent cylinders commonly means the head gasket is blown. Absolutely no compression in one cylinder does not necessarily mean a valve is stuck open or burned away we’ve seen more than one case of an engine continuing to run even though it had thrown a connecting rod and shattered a piston. Also, low cylinders that don’t produce more pressure after oil has been introduced into them may not have burned valves. Always check to see that the camshaft lobes are not so worn that they can’t open the valves enough to pack the cylinder properly.
A camshaft lobe that ‘s too worn to open its valve will cause misfiring in that cylinder.
12
Aftermarket International
When performing a compression test, take note of the readings with each needle jump as explained in the text.
UNINVITED AIR In cases where you still have one or two cylinders that miss at idle, but have found no problem in either ignition or compression, there’s a distinct possibility that is often overlooked: a vacuum leak in the intake manifold runner that leads to that cylinder. We remember numerous examples of this from our own experience decades ago that can still teach us something. In one carbureted inline six, for instance, cylinder #6 had a dead miss at idle, but the engine ran fine at part throttle. We noticed that there was a vacuum tap with numerous hoses attached to it threaded into the intake manifold runner to #6, and it didn’t take long to trace them until we found a place

UNEVEN IDLE
The venerable Chrysler Slant Six had a vacuum tap in the intake runner to #6. A leak in the hose that went to it would cause a dead miss at idle.
where one hose was cracked almost all the way around. This admitted enough extra air to make the mixture too lean at idle to fire in that cylinder only. In another instance, we were brought a Toyota four that performed fine except for a very poor idle. Pulling the spark plug wires revealed that #3 was totally dead. After ignition and compression checked out, we searched for a vacuum leak. At the seam between that cylinder’s intake runner and the head we could feel a rush of air. Again, the leak made the mixture too lean to burn at idle. With multi-port fuel injection systems, the only other likely cause of one cylinder failing to fire, thus producing a poor idle, is a problem with that particular injector. Listen to all the injectors with a mechanic’s stethoscope. If one is silent, or makes a noise unlike the others, you’ve found a problem. In the case of silence, check for a steady12V (key on) and flashing ground (cranking or running) at the electrical connector. If the injector clicks, but you suspect that it’s clogged, there are various methods of diagnosis. One convenient means is to attach what’s known as a “buzz box” to the injector, and pulse it while reading the fuel pressure drop on a gauge. If this drop is considerably smaller than that of the other injectors, this one is either plugged with deposits, or otherwise defective.
faulty OHC timing belt or balance shaft belt timing, or a problem in the air/fuel mixture. The first ignition subject you will naturally think of is the secondary circuit from the rotor through the distributor cap and wires to the spark plugs. A visual inspection will often tip you off to carbon tracking on the cap, deposit-filled cap sockets, melted and shorted plug wires, etc., and spraying the engine lightly with water or a special liquid made for the purpose while it is running will help uncover any weaknesses. When you hit the trouble spot, roughness will increase and you may see arcing. Although EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) has been in use on most engines since the 1970s, there are still technicians who do not understand the system. Suffice it to say here that if the EGR valve is stuck open at idle, thus allowing exhaust to enter the intake, it will definitely ruin idle quality. You can test for this condition by grasping the stem of the valve with longnose pliers and pushing it closed. Also, open it (you can use a manual vacuum pump attached to the nipple of the diaphragm chamber) to make sure the idle roughens and the engine stalls. As mentioned earlier, a perforated duct downstream of the MAF sensor can cause rough idle. This is because the computer will be mislead into believing that less air is entering the engine than actually is, so it will provide a shorter injector pulse width than is needed, leaning out the mixture enough to cause misfiring. This is commonly referred to as “false air.” Finally, there’s a cause of rough idle that has nothing to do with how the engine is running: bad motor mounts. Typically, the rubber gets soft from an oil leak, and you can find out if this is the case by inspecting the mounts under a strong light and probing them with a screwdriver. n
GENERALLY ROUGH But sometimes during your cylinder-isolating test you will find that none makes any more difference than the others in idle quality -- it runs equally badly no matter which cylinder is disabled. This points to a general ignition fault, EGR troubles, 14
Aftermarket International
If the rubber in a motor mount “sandwich” has softened or disintegrated, it will allow the engine to squirm and vibrate enough to make the idle feel rough even though there’s nothing actually wrong with how the engine is running.

A
nyone who’s familiar with automotive history, or who has long experience in the auto service profession knows that motor vehicles go much farther without needing major repairs than they did in the past, often two or three times as far. This is the result of evolving science and technology, sophisticated engineering, vastly improved materials, better lubricants and filtration, and superior maintenance practices. That last point is the key to success in the automotive service business. You can’t just be a “repair shop” anymore. sitting more than working. On the other hand, those major repairs are hugely more expensive than they used to be -- the price of parts and the necessary charges for shop time have escalated dramatically. So, your customers should be willing to spend maintenance money in order to avoid catastrophic repair bills. We often encounter cases where the cost of fixing even a late-model vehicle exceeds its value! Some people have actually come out and said that helping motorists get all the life possible out of their vehicles reduces the volume of profitable repair jobs, but we at AI believe that’s not an enlightened attitude. Instead, you should see yourself as the shepherd of an automotive flock. You will make up

the financial difference doing maintenance, steady work such as that on brakes, and in loyalty, and everybody will be a lot happier. We’re not going to discuss developing a maintenance marketing program in this article, but instead try to make sure you don’t miss any opportunities. Naturally, engine oil and filter changes top the list of regularly-needed jobs, but are not enough to allow a car to live a long life without expensive work. All the other fluids that make motorized transportation possible coolant, ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) and gear lube, brake fluid, power steering fluid all deplete their additive packages and/or get dirty over time, rendering them unable to provide the proper protection. Other important maintenance such as intake tract cleaning, valve lash adjustment, timing belt replacement at the recommended intervals, brake lining checks, etc. is often overlooked, yet is typically easy to sell to your customers.
FRESH COOLANT Negligent cooling system care can cause problems that range from insufficient heater output and a fouled coolant temperature sensor to a ruptured head or intake manifold gasket, scored cylinders, and a ruined block. Antifreeze does a lot more than just keep ice from forming. It inhibits corrosion, lubricates the water pump seal, and raises the boiling point. So, even if you live in a tropical climate, a 50/50 mixture is still necessary.
Although it is possible to do coolant exchanges without a machine designed for the purpose, it would be very timeconsuming and messy. One benefit of this unit is that it produces a vacuum in the system for complete filling.
18
Aftermarket International
If the coolant looks dirty and discolored, it has probably been in there longer than the vehicle manufacturer recommends, so it’s time for a flush and refill. Choosing the type of antifreeze to use is a complex subject worthy of its own article, so our advice here is to consult the service literature for the car at hand, and to use what’s specified. Numerous long-life formulations are now available, depending on the make. Then there’s the other component of engine coolant: water. Never mix what comes from your tap with antifreeze as it probably contains chlorine and other chemicals that can form deposits, or eat away at components. Even well water may be too “hard” (containing minerals) to use safely. Distilled water works out to very little extra expense per car. One important reminder: Many late models have problems with trapped air, so make sure you find out about any special bleeding procedures.
TORQUE TRANSMITTERS Since today’s engines are so durable, the most expensive mechanical repair a car owner is likely to be presented with is an automatic transmission/transaxle overhaul or replacement. We once interviewed a big-city cab driver who told us his fleet
Using a transmission flushing machine allows you to do a much better and faster job.

Manual transmissions/transaxles wear out eventually, but not as soon if they receive fluid changes. They can also be made quieter and smoother-shifting if treated to synthetic gear lubricant.

averages two to three transmissions to one engine job. For decades, many carmakers stated that the ATF didn’t need to be changed until 160,000 km (100,000 miles). That was for “normal” service, but most people fall into the “severe” category, which requires a 48,000-km (30,000-mile) interval. That’s what most of the technicians we know recommend, although we are always distressed at how bad the fluid looks even after that reasonable distance. While the traditional ATF and filter change is better than doing nothing, you’re still leaving maybe half of the old, burnedup and contaminated ATF behind. So, you may want to invest in a transmission flushing machine. Pumping fresh fluid through the transmission, perhaps after a special cleaning/reconditioning chemical has been added to the old, will assure that most of the dirty, broken-down ATF is replaced. You can expect to get 85% to 97% of the used fluid out, typically in less than 15 minutes. As one successful shop owner tells us, “We have a transmission flushing machine and we are absolutely thrilled with it. I feel a lot better about the job, and we have actually cured some shift complaints in the process. It is easy to sell, and I feel I am doing something for the customer.” If you want to take this service to an even higher level, you can recommend synthetic fluid. It is substantially more expensive, but regular ATF simply cannot compete with its heat-defying properties. Now, of course, many vehicles come from the factory with synthetic ATF so the sale is made automatically. There are maintenance opportunities in manual transmissions, transaxles, and rear axles, too. Some manufacturers recommend that the gear lubricant be changed at 40,000 km (24,000 miles), but look it up. Also, it wouldn’t hurt to recommend a synthetic, especially in cases where shifting is stiff in cold weather or unpleasantly rough.
and the electro-hydraulic control unit. That makes brake fluid changes even more important than they were in the past. Where once many carmakers made no mention of the need to replace the fluid periodically (or even during a brake job), now they’re giving intervals. It’s the only way to get rid of moisture, rust, and the ashy residue of burned glycol, and amounts to cheap insurance against expensive repairs. Recommended intervals range from one to three years. By the way, the use of a brake fluid flushing/change system makes the job much more streamlined and efficient than having a helper pump the pedal while you drain the fluid at the wheels. Speaking of brake fluid, if you get a manual transmission vehicle in that has a hydraulically-actuated clutch, it makes sense to flush that system, too.
POWERFUL STEERING There is another crucial automotive liquid that’s largely neglected: power steering fluid. It’s usually not even mentioned in the owner’s manual maintenance schedule, but it still represents an opportunity for auto service shops.
WHAT PUSHES PADS Just about every late-model car is equipped with ABS. While this safety advance has proved to be quite dependable, there have been problems with water, corrosion, and dirt in the lines Aftermarket International

MAINTENANCE, SERVICES
“If you put a drop of fluid on a white card, you can see any particles,” a shop owner who does this on a regular basis tells us. “Show it to the customer, and it’s an easy sell, especially if you mention the cost of installing a new rack & pinion unit. You can usually feel the difference, so it’s a driver comfort issue, too. And it often eliminates whine.” But this isn’t just a regular maintenance opportunity. It would be foolish to replace a rack or pump without thoroughly flushing the system to get out contamination, chips, and bad fluid. So, we think the investment in a p.s. flushing/fluid exchange machine is well worth it. Meanwhile, if you haven’t got this profitable piece of equipment, you should at least do it the old fashioned way: 1. Disconnect the return line from the pump and put it in a container. 2. Remove the belt and turn the pump pulley by hand. 3. Keep adding fresh fluid until you get a clear flow from the line -- be sure not to run the reservoir dry.
FUEL FAILURES Obviously, gasoline is a fluid, too. But it’s always fresh, right? Not necessarily. Many cars get parked for months at a time. Especially in hot climates, this can cause horrendous varnish and gum formation problems. So, if any of your customers intend to leave their cars while they go on vacation for anything more than a month or so, you had better sell them some fuel stabilizer. While on the subject of fuel, you simply cannot squeeze large volumes of complex liquid hydrocarbons through tiny orifices and incinerate them inside a highly-engineered mechanism without some negative consequences, namely deposits in the intake tract and the injectors themselves, which result in starting and driveability trouble. As far as injector cleaning by itself is concerned, it typically improves flow and spray patterns, eliminating some idle and driveability complaints and emissions test failures. But there is more to this topic: deposits on the backs of the valves and in the manifold and combustion chamber. These can act as a sponge, soaking up fuel and causing lean problems for a short time after start-up until they’re saturated. They also may grow big enough to reduce volumetric efficiency, raise the compression ratio (which in turn increases octane requirements and NOx emissions), and interfere with the swirling action that gives a complete burn. You can get good results eliminating these deposits with a system that delivers a sophisticated liquid cleaning agent to the
intake tract. The characteristics of the chemical itself do the work, soaking in and causing the deposits to soften and break up. Typically, the formulas will contain a high percentage of detergent, some dispersant, and a solvent carrier, the goal being low volatility that lets the cleaner keep working instead of flashing off immediately. Over the years, we’ve had excellent results improving performance and reducing NOx emissions with such a system.
VALVE LASH Many millions of the late-model Asian vehicles require valve clearance adjustment as regular maintenance, but it does not actually get done anywhere near as often as recommended. You should include lash checks as part of a normal bundle of maintenance services, which you can continue to call a tuneup, if you must use that anachronistic term. What are the benefits of doing this job? You’re making money, of course, but there is also the appreciation motorists will have of a quieted clatter, often to a high degree. There may even be a little improvement in performance. Beyond that, there are actually some engines wherein the valves recede into their seats faster than the mechanism that opens them wears, resulting in the counter-intuitive situation of the clearance getting tighter instead of looser. If neglected, this will result in misfires, then burned valves. While we’re on the subject of valve actuation, what about timing belt replacement? Since a snapped belt may result in bent valves and a huge repair bill, never let your customers exceed the recommended interval.
REMOVING PARTICLES Finally, there are filters. Those for fuel must be replaced at the recommended intervals or restriction will put such a strain on the electric pump that it will fail prematurely. While a dirty air filter won’t ruin an engine, it will reduce performance, so follow the recommendations for installing a new one. Cabin filters are relatively new, and not all cars have them yet. So, look up the service information and replace them regularly if present. n
The progression of carbon fouling on intake valves (courtesy Run-Rite).
A clogged fuel filter can result in an expensive repair by causing the pump to wear out prematurely. If you don’t look it up, you may not even know a cabin filter is present.

Messe Frankfurt aiming for £700 million in sales As far as its financial position and event portfolio are concerned, the Messe Frankfurt Group remains stronger than ever in 2018. Speaking at the Corporate Press Conference earlier today, Wolfgang Marzin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Messe Frankfurt, announced: “We are aiming for around £700 million in Wolfgang Marzin sales.” After a very dynamic first six months, projections for the second half of the year are also good. Since 2010, Messe Frankfurt Group sales have increased by around 50 percent – from £448 million to around £669 million in 2017. Annual net income is in the region of Ð41 million, which is the secondbest figure in the company’s history. Wolfgang Marzin explained the company’s successful growth as follows: “With our three business fields – Fairs & Events, Locations and Services – we have a wellestablished business model and a solid foundation for further development.” Messe Frankfurt has consolidated its worldwide network to 30 subsidiaries with the addition of a new location in the United Kingdom and another one in China. The company is strategically driving forward its new business, with 25 events making their debut this year. Wolfgang Marzin: “The synergies that we achieve within our companies around the world are strengths that we can use profitably and sustainably.” High international component and continued growth in exhibitor count As Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt GmbH, stresses: “If everything goes according to plan, the exhibitor record of 95,000 companies that we set in financial year 2017 will be broken yet again.” In the Fairs & Events business field, the company is expanding its sector expertise in key growth regions. With regard to the company’s operating business worldwide, Braun stated: “Our events are growing in depth and breadth, with a high international component and high levels of satisfaction among our customers.” In a generally challenging industry sector and market environment, Messe Frankfurt is there for its customers, investing to great effect in improvements and new developments. Detlef Braun: “As an event organiser and marketing partner to our customers, linking together different perspectives and industry sectors creates space for 26

new projects, business models, cooperative measures and target groups.” SPS IPC Drives, the flagship event for smart and digital automation, will continue to be held in Nuremberg. As Uwe Behm, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt, emphasises: “In this way, we provide our customers with the longterm planning security that they need.” With five events now being held worldwide, the company has extensive expertise in the Electronics & Automation Technologies industry segment. Formnext is the flagship event for additive manufacturing, 3D printing and the next generation of intelligent industrial production processes. Within a very short space of time, it developed into a flagship event in the eyes of its industry sector and will be held again in November with more exhibitors and more exhibition space than ever before. Some 240 events held on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds every year After two years of construction work, Hall 12 is to join Messe Frankfurt’s network in September with Automechanika, thus further enhancing the range of trade fair services at its Frankfurt base. As Uwe Behm stresses: “For us and all other organisers, having a first-class exhibition grounds creates an ideal environment for successful events – and ours is one of the best in the world. Thanks to these investments, we can enhance the concepts underlying Group events and open up new possibilities for our guest events.” Messe Frankfurt plays host to some 240 events every year. The booking situation in the Locations business field is very encouraging. Working together with city institutions, the company is aiming to further raise Frankfurt’s profile worldwide as an international congress centre. For instance, one of the six major medical congresses in Europe – EULAR 2020, Annual European Congress of Rheumatology – will be coming to Frankfurt, where some 15,000 participants are expected to attend. The Hall of the Year award for Germany, Austria and Switzerland was presented to the historic multifunctional Festhalle as part of the Live Entertainment Award 2018. Messe Frankfurt aims to take the Services business field to the next level with analogue and digital services. Uwe Behm: “Customised solutions throughout our range of services are USPs that our customers value greatly.” One of Messe Frankfurt’s strengths is the stable growth that comes from its first-class events around the world. The company’s success is based in no small part on its ongoing dialogue with its customers. Wolfgang Marzin: “We are learning more about the needs of our customers and are working with them in developing new ideas and innovations – both physical and digital – to bring out the best in their trade fair activities.” October 2018

EQUIP AUTO 2019 Shortly following his re-election as chairman of the French Vehicle Equipment Industries (FIEV), Jacques Mauge, the chairman of the trade show EQUIP AUTO, welcomed more than 400 representatives of the automotive aftersales sector on Tuesday 3 July at a gala evening organised in the prestigious setting of the Saint Louis Jacques Mauge des Invalides cathedral. Following a 2017 edition representing the first phase of the exhibition’s revitalisation strategy, this event was the occasion to officially launch the 2019 edition of EQUIP AUTO and reassert its ambition to establish itself as the imperative international trade show for aftersales and services for mobility. Continuing to transform EQUIP AUTO, Jacques Mauge expanded upon his objectives: “Whilst bringing together the entire automotive aftersales family in Paris in a professional, convivial and business-conducive environment, the international meeting place for technical innovation and services for mobility should also be the venue at which to discover and comprehend technological disruption aimed at addressing the challenges of tomorrow.” To define the priorities of the show, FIEV once again called on the advice of a strategy committee gathering together, alongside its partner the French Bodywork Federation (FFC), representatives from the French trade bodies CNPA, FEDA, FNAAA, GNESA, SNCTA and the Association of Tyre Professionals, as well as member firms of these organisation. Equip Auto 2019 Will Revolve Around 3 Strategic Priorities 1. The traditional ecosystem of automotive aftersales. This is the exhibition’s DNA and represents the whole sector and its offering of parts, equipment, machinery and services for vehicle aftersales and maintenance. 2. The digitalization of automotive services. This vector will offer an opportunity to propose an extended offering of solutions and innovations, ranging from connected parts to connected workshops, connectivity and vehicle electrification and automation. 3. The new practices of aftersales professionals. Closely attuned to market developments, this strategic priority will offer insight into the new behavioral patterns of traditional market players in reaction to new challenges. It will also provide an opportunity to discover new market entrants that 28
Aftermarket International
respond to users’ needs and the new expectations arising from society and new legislation. At the heart of these 3 strategic priorities, 6 themes will be developed: • The connected garage, • Vehicle electrification • Circular Economy • Retrofitting, • The efficiency of the supply chain and training • Employment in the industry. In addition, the tyre market will benefit from a specific focus. At the crossroads between the themes of EQUIP AUTO 2019 and in the same way as Washing, the tyre sector should be highlighted as a “show within the show”. Finally, a major new feature will make its debut at the 2019 edition of EQUIP AUTO in the presence of the Paris Motor Show through Mondial Tech, a trade-only space dedicated to the future of transport and mobility. Automotive manufacturers, OEMs, start-ups and Tech majors will thus convene during the five days of EQUIP AUTO. The 2019 show will thereby constitute a coherent whole ranging from original equipment to aftersales, and will offer new opportunities for the development and dissemination of all projects dealing with the chain of mobility. The continuation and continuous improvement of EQUIP AUTO’s revitalisation strategy presented by Jacques Mauge, and which met with a very favourable response from the profession, is further bolstered by the organisation of the exhibition from October 15 to 19, 2019 at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles where it will occupy halls 1, 2 and 3. Mondial Tech, meanwhile, will take place in Hall 7. October 2018

Honeywell Announces Garrett as Company Name for Transportation Systems Business After Spin-Off Honeywell announced that its Transportation Systems business will rebrand itself “Garrett Advancing Motion” upon successful completion of the previously announced spin which is expected to close before the end of the third quarter. The Garrett name ties back to Honeywell’s turbo origins in the 1950s. At that time, entrepreneur and engineer Cliff Garrett led a project team to develop a turbocharger for a Caterpillar D9 crawler tractor that launched in 1954, marking the beginning of the turbocharged era for the automotive industry. Since then, Transportation Systems technologies and innovations have been used by nearly every major global auto maker, resulting in approximately 100 million vehicles with our products and an average launch rate of 100 new applications annually spanning, gas, diesel, natural gas, electric and fuel cell powertrains. Honeywell Transportation Systems has been using the Garrett name to brand its current portfolio of aftermarket replacement and performance upgrade turbochargers for gasoline and diesel passenger and commercial vehicles. The decision was made to name the new company Garrett to acknowledge its long history of innovation while adding the tag line “ Advancing Motion” to embrace the future and 30

Automechanika Shanghai 2018 Promises to Be Even Bigger Than Last Year
A
fter last year’s record-breaking show, Automechanika Shanghai reports that expectations are high for this year’s new exhibition, which will take place from Nov. 28 through Dec. 1 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai. To compete with 2017, this year’s show will reach a whopping 350,000 square meters, and some 140,000 visitors will have the chance to view products from about 6,250 exhibitors— with many exhibitors representing the show’s stronger spotlight on advancements that are now becoming ubiquitous across the industry, including digital automotive innovations. As autonomous driving, car connectivity, electro-mobility, and advanced systems become even more trendy, this year’s show will connect visitors with the latest product developments. In fact, Automechanika Shanghai’s emphasis on digital trends prompted the show to create the “Tomorrow’s Service & Mobility” area, in collaboration with China Electronics Chamber of Commerce. In the North Hall, visitors will see five essential elements of car connectivity through exhibits, forums, and interactive activities for private and public transportation.
44
Those elements include a people area, which will focus on car well-being, including the very latest interior electronics for improved safety, personal entertainment and driver comfort; a vehicle area, where visitors can see on-site car demonstrations, along with a host of electric vehicles on display to bring the show’s connectivity concepts to life; a road area, which will promote the infrastructure of connected roads for autonomous driving; a network area, where several leading international network and IT providers will demonstrate how connectivity continues to bridge the auto sector with the online world; and a cloud area, with a focus on data management where visitors can explore the ways in which car connectivity data can enhance fleet management, car sharing, and smart cities. “Tomorrow’s Service & Mobility” will also touch on new energy vehicle innovations, such as electric controls, charging infrastructure, battery technology, vehicle components and testing equipment. Plus, other industry sectors will demonstrate how these digital trends are filtering into many automotive markets, including parts and components, accessories and customizing, repair and maintenance, and electronics and systems sectors. “We have been lucky enough to witness a shift in attitude for automotive manufacturing in recent years,” Fiona Chiew, deputy general manager of show organizer Messe Frankfurt, said in a press release. She also added that, “the show’s representation of the entire supply chain, on top of its ability to attract the biggest names from around the
world, allows us to represent this evolution in the most effective way possible. REIFEN Zone will also return to this year’s show. REIFEN Zone helps to connect the entire auto supply chain under one roof, and covers the very latest tire, wheel and rim products. This year in the REIFEN ZONE, a special showcase will take place for tires and wheels associated with high performance vehicles such as custom wheels and rims, self-sealing and lightweight tires, and even more innovative tire production processes. Fuel efficiency and environmental consciousness will also be a key highlight in the zone, alongside tires produced specifically for electric vehicles. The area will also welcome additional leading brands this year, including last year’s Active Tools, Fangxing Tire, Guizhou Tire, and more. Automechanika Shanghai’s Chain Stores Zone is new for this year’s show, and was created in direct response to China’s transforming distribution channels—particularly within the field of repair and maintenance. Chain stores in the country now occupy over 20 percent of the market , and offer a more transparent alternative for price and standardized services. According to show co-organizer and Vice President of China National Machinery Industry International, “the automobile service industry has moved into an end-user oriented era, where technological level, product quality, and service standards have been raised. This, together
with the growth of service repair chain stores, has paved the way for long-term development. Many chain stores are offering solutions for car owners in a structural way.” The Chain Stores Zone will welcome a strong collection of domestic and international chain stores, e-commerce businesses and automotive distributors. This inclusion also serves as insight into the escalating importance for the future of auto repair, the press release says. n

ATRA Powertrain Expo Promises to be Ground Zero For Transmission Tech
T
he Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association’s (ATRA) Powertrain Expo will be held from Oct. 31 through Nov. 3 in Las Vegas. According to a press release, it will be “ground zero” for the latest in both transmission and information technology, with exhibitors coming from around the world. Each year, exhibitors and guests meet at ATRA’s Powertrain Expo to see all of the newest products and technology affecting the transmission industry, plus explore new services. “From its beginning in 1993, we’ve had one mission: helping transmission shops gain and keep more customers, and to help technicians fix cars,” the expo writes on its website. “It’s a simple idea but not such an easy task. With the everchanging marketplace and rate of technology advances, it’s an even greater challenge for transmission specialists to stay at the top of their profession. That’s why so many transmission professionals make it a point to attend ATRA’s Powertrain Expo—every year. And because it’s such a popular event for transmission professionals, you’ll have an opportunity to network with shop owners and industry leaders, all working to make their business and the industry a success.” This year’s show will be held at Bally’s Hotel & Casino. Guests can stay at the hotel at a special expo rate of $159 per night, and can book their rooms at ATRA’s website. Over the four-day show, guests will experience technical and management seminars, trade shows, ATRA member meetings,

AAPEX Will Take Tech to the Next Level
A
APEX 2018 will be held from Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 at Sands Expo in Las Vegas. This year’s show will focus on new and emerging technologies to help guests keep up-to-date. In fact, AAPEX promises if you attend this year’s show, “you’ll gain a better understanding of what’s current and what’s coming down the road from hands-on demos; an augmented reality experience; a spotlight on electric and alternative fuel vehicles in Mobility Garage; AAPEX Technology of Tomorrow’s showcase of innovations in the works; and [more].” At the Mobility Garage, formerly called the Mobility Park, guests will be able to experience hands-on demos of of digital scan tools and underhood training, as well as learn about the latest electric vehicle and alternative fuel vehicle technology and innovations. Guests can even virtually test and install parts at exhibits in the Venetian Titian and Bellini Ballrooms. At Technology of Tomorrow—formerly the Technology Intersection—guests can see and discuss new solutions in development, and experience an exhibitor showcase of new tech. And at Let’s Tech, guests can enjoy 20-minute-long presentations hourly on “relevant ideas to apply to your business without taking much time off the show floor,” the AAPEX website says. The sessions are presented by exhibitors, but AAPEX promises they won’t be a sales pitch; the sessions are “ learning opportunities to help you make better buying decisions.” Last year, more than 47,000 buyers sourced innovations on AAPEX’s show floor, according to its website, “with 90 percent
reporting they were likely to return in 2018.” 83 percent of exhibitors said they were satisfied with last year’s representation of key buyer categories. This year’s keynote address, a ticketed event, will be given by John King, the chief national correspondent and anchor for CNN’s Inside Politics. The grand-opening address, titled “Breakfast with John King,” will wrap up with a question-andanswer session with King. As usual, Aftermarket International will have an important presence at AAPEX, with our traditional “double issue.” Open it from one side and it’s all in English. Open it from the reverse side and it is in Spanish. Both readers and advertisers have complimented us on this manner of publishing, so we will continue to do it this way for our final (and Las Vegas show) issues of the year. You can find us in two locales, both downstairs at the Sands: • Located near the International Registration area is the International Buyers Lounge. If you have an international badge, you should be easily admitted. • Many of you are familiar with the Overseas Automotive Council (OAC). OAC has its own meeting rooms, as many of their members both exhibit and attend. Manufacturer members tend to be exhibitors, and distributor members are the buyers/attendees.. n Information from this article was collected from the AAPEX website and press releases.
