s Aftermarket International grows we include features that we believe will enhance our mission…providing information to the marketplace that makes our readers more knowledgeable of their markets, and helps them do their jobs more effectively. With that in mind, we are happy to announce the appointment of James Wilder as our new Contributing Editor, effective with this issue. Jim comes to us from a US auto aftermarket publication, Undercar Digest. Jim’s specialty is “how to”, meaning he is a big believer in using pictures to demonstrate to his audience how certain repairs should be done. In this issue, his feature is entitled “Engine Decarbonizing”. It’s our cover story. I particularly like Jim’s observation that the expression “pedal to the metal” is more of a rarity than a frequent occurrence. Also, with the philosophy “a picture is worth a thousand words”, you’ll see how Jim uses pictures to further educate us. We welcome Jim and look forward to his contributions in the future. Each issue of Aftermarket International features two technical articles. The second is from our friends at Brake Parts Inc / Raybestos. It’s entitled “Using the Right Lube for Brake Service” and is authored by Technical Trainer Dann Ingebritson. Thank you Dann. Every issue of Aftermarket International and Aftermarket International en español reach various trade shows. In total, we go to close to 20 with physical distribution. It helps us get new subscribers and also is a bonus to our advertisers. This issue is no exception. MIMS Automechanika Moscow is one of the many events of the Automechanika organization. It’s held annually. Equip Auto is held every other year, on the odd-numbered years, in Paris. This edition of our brand will be found at both and we have articles on them too. Please take a look at our Industry News section. There is a lot of interesting things happening in the industry, and we included as many as possible. I hope you agree, its “meatier” than what we have previously published. As always, this issue can be found on our site www.aftermarketinternational. com. Click on the Magazine icon on our home page and that will take you to this and previous digital editions. Also, you can link to any advertiser’s site from clicking on their ad. See you in October, or somewhere I hope. Keep those cards and letters coming in people!

ENGINE DECARBONIZING 6.0-Liter Power Stroke
By Jim Wilder, Contributing Editor
Engine decarbonization has become a mainstay in the automotive aftermarket to keep diesel-powered and gasoline direct-injection vehicles running at maximum efficiency. Rick’s Automotive, Springfield, Mo., services fleets of ambulances from 20 counties throughout southwest Missouri, northern Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. Engine decarbonization is included as part of the shop’s 60,000-mile preventive maintenance schedule on diesel engines in these emergency-vehicle fleets, and many other fleets it services. Recently the shop tried a new engine-cleaning product that was introduced to them by Bartec USA, a company known for its tire-pressure monitoring diagnostic and service equipment. Called Revive, the product is a water-based, non-toxic and nonflammable fluid and was originally developed for the cleaning and maintenance of aviation jet engines, power-station turbines and large marine diesel engines. Dennis Flanery, Bartec national sales manager, central, said Bartec recently bought the Revive product line from a manufacturer in England. 6

Last Chance Before Replacing a Turbo Dennis Flanery, national sales manager, central, for Bartec, said that Revive is designed to be used as a preventive-maintenance procedure. However, the product has been found to be a “lastchance solution” before a shop is forced to buy a new turbo Dennis Flanery charger for an engine. Such was the case a few months ago when he visited a school district in Alabama that owned a fleet of Freightliner school buses with Cummins engines. One bus was five or six years old but was only driven daily for very short trips to pick up students for school and then take them back home. With only 63,000 miles on the odometer
the truck’s variable geometric turbo impeller was caked with hardened carbon deposits. Flanery said other cleaning products were used to no avail, and with the warranty out of date, Cummins advised the school that the only “fix” was to replace the turbo charger, with parts and labor reaching about $3,000. The first step of the three-step process using Resolve helps soften the hardened carbon with the following second and third steps providing the actual cleaning, he said. “With this particular bus, we used one kit to clean the hardened carbon from the impeller,” Flanery said “So the problem was solved for about one-tenth of the cost of a new turbo charger.” In Florida, Flanery assisted with the turbo cleaning on a Chevrolet Duramax that was used only inside a U.S. Naval base where the legal speed limit was only 25 mph – the perfect recipe for extreme carbon build up. “It took two kits to soften the carbon and clean the turbo system,” he said. “We can’t guarantee that this will work every time when a turbo has this much damage, but it is sure worth a shot for any fleet operator who wants to try and prevent unnecessary expenses. Flanery advised that after any cleaning, the diesel particulate filter (DPF) may go into the active regeneration mode earlier than normal to help burn up any of the extra carbon soot deposits held in the filter from the cleaning.
Rick’s Automotive’s ASE Master Technician Dan Williams was assigned the task of using the new product on a 2010 Ford Power Stroke. He explained that engine carbon buildup is common on these ambulances because their daily duties, in essence, are much like that of taxis and law-enforcement patrol cars – they sit idling for extensive periods of time and often are driven in everyday traffic. Putting the “pedal to the metal” does not occur as often as some may believe. Bartec’s Dennis Flanery said the softening of the carbon deposits take place during the first step, with the actual cleaning taking place in steps two and three. Cleaning of the exhaust side of the turbo continues for a period of time as the vehicle is driven.
Williams noted that Revive did a better job of softening the carbon deposits compared to other cleaning systems he has used. He added that he preferred the Revive because the water-based cleaner was not caustic and he did not have to worry about skin damage to his hands. He also said that that the white flumes of smoke that blew out the tailpipe during the cleaning process, which took place in the parking lot, were not as offensive smelling as other products he had used. The pump and applicator combination, which was included, was a “nice touch” since an added-cost specialized pump was not required.

This 2010 Ford E-350 with the 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine has been well maintained. It has more than 360,000 miles on the odometer but Williams said that it is on its second engine. The replacement engine now has about 125,000 miles on it.

In order to see how well the product works, Williams wants to examine the EGR valve, the airdiverter enhancement flap, and intake air-temperature sensor #2, which is designed to validate EGR flow and function. As many technicians know, the engine compartment is very cramped.

This is considered to be normal carbon build up on the air-diverter flowenhancement flap. The carbon is built up on the top and bottom of the flap.

The first step is to run the engine at 0.45 times the manufacturer’s maximum rpm (redline) of the engine. For the 6.0-liter diesel, Williams determined that to be 1,485 rpm. He used a pedal prop to maintain the specified engine rpm.

Brush lubricating caliper
Using the Right Lube For Brake Service By Dann Ingebritson, Technical Trainer, Brake Parts Inc
B
eing in the automotive repair business for many years, I am familiar with the various types of vehicle lubricants. Even way back when I first started in the trade there were things you do and things you don’t. We had special graphite grease for the door lock to prevent freezing, anti-seize for exhaust bolts under extreme heat and silicone for rubber parts. WD-40 was the catch all if you didn’t know what to use or didn’t have the right lube. All I knew was if two pieces of metal were touching, lube it. Ball joints, hood latches, door hinges, pitman arms – almost every part on the car that slid against another part needed some sort of lube, and that included the brake components. The brake pads may not slide a long distance, but they still need to move freely. Everyone has done a brake job where the old pads had to be hammered out of the bracket. You have seen pads wear unevenly due to one pad moving and the other one being stuck in place. Even if the caliper square-cut seal is doing its job and flexing to retract the piston, you still need pads to move easily. Most manufacturers use floating calipers for higher
12

corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) ratings rather than the old sliding type, so ease of movement is absolutely necessary. Working at Brake Parts Inc (BPI) in the technical service department for the past 18 years has allowed me to see and perform many brake jobs. I am still Pad with dry shim amazed when I see pads installed dry. that can migrate When I see the person doing it or see off of the pad due to no lubrication

it in the warranty bin, I usually question the shop or individual on why they did not lube any part of the brake job. Normally the answer is “they don’t lube them from the factory.” I agree, most manufacturers do not lube the slide area or backing plates. This may be due to cost, EPA regulations, cleanliness, possible contamination, time factor or whatever else we can think of. But I also know of a couple technical service bulletins (TSB) that have been created over the years that specifically direct the technician to apply high-temperature synthetic lube to the back of the pads. The GM version even gives a part number for the silicone brake lubricant (88862181), but I have found many equivalents. The TSB is normally for noise issues, but that just proves the point. Why not cut back on noise, extend pad life, prevent brake pulls and make your customer happy by just lubing metal to metal contact points? You will also extend the life of the shims, which can get pulled off of the backing plate with pad movement. Also, don’t forget when the vehicle is brand new all parts are clean and there are no rusty brackets, but instead, perfectly clean hardware and functioning calipers. You get the vehicle with rusty worn-out everything, including shocks and struts. I hear from many technicians who reuse the old hardware because the new stuff doesn’t fit in the bracket. As I stated before, I am involved in hundreds of brake jobs per year and I can’t remember the last time I had an issue with hardware. This is due to the fact we sand blast brackets and/or file any knuckle assembly that the pads ride in. After cleaning and applying the correct lube, the hardware fits great, as do the pads. And remember, no grinding the edges. I will sometimes prove to a non-believer that sandblasting works by ordering a rebuilt caliper for the vehicle they claim the pad does not fit. I’ll take the pad that will not work on their car, yet it slips into place on the new caliper. This just shows how much cast iron “grows” with rust. Wire brushes may not remove rust, but coarse files and sandblasters do. There are many good brake lubes on the market, but here are some things to look for: high-temp and synthetic. High-temp can handle more than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit with some claiming protection higher than 2,500 degrees. Synthetic or silicone lube is needed because it will be in contact with rubber parts, such as caliper bushings and piston dust boots. Petroleumbased lubes will cause some rubber components to distort or bind, such as caliper-slide bushings. Lubing the backing plates where they touch metal will cut back on the noise issues and keep the shims intact. Remember the GM TSB I referred to earlier? It was designed for noise problems. Aftermarket International
August 2019
Brush lubricating the piston
If you read it, it says to try three to four aggressive stops first. If that doesn’t cure noise, remove the brake pads and apply the high-temp silicone to the back of all pads. That is the end of the TSB and don’t forget this is for GM technicians working on warranty flat rate. If your brake job comes back for noise, rapid wear or brake pull, it will cost you time and the shop’s reputation also takes a hit. Why not take the extra few steps of cleaning and lubing to make your customer happy, and then they only come back when they need new work – not to redo what has already been done. So, what is an acceptable core? Injectors, for example, are more sensitive than most other engine products—such as an alternator or a cylinder head—so a core-acceptance policy must be carefully followed. Cores must be in reasonably good and in repairable condition. Every core needs to be visually inspected by the customer. Cores must be packaged and protected very well, to prevent any damage during transportation which would make the core unrepairable. n Dann Ingebritson is a technical trainer for Brake Parts Inc. MAHLE Acquires Transmission Specialist MAHLE is taking over transmission specialist ZG-Zahnräder und Getriebe GmbH, based in Eching, near Munich/ Germany. With this acquisition, MAHLE is able to further develop its competence in the entire powertrain. Details of the agreement and the purchase price will not be disclosed. Through the acquisition, MAHLE is expanding its expertise in the powertrain as a whole, to include the transmission, a key component. This is significant because the trend in electric vehicles is moving toward integrated drive systems. MAHLE says this strategic move allows the company to tap into additional development competence in this field, thus putting it in a position to offer its customers integrated systems solutions for the powertrain from a single source, including transmission design. ZG-Zahnräder und Getriebe GmbH is a highly innovative service provider in the field of powertrain engineering and has particular expertise in state-of-theart gearing technology. The company was founded in 2008 as a spin-off from the Technical University of Munich. Its approximately 40 employees support automobile manufacturers and suppliers throughout the entire development process. “The acquisition is another important step in the expansion of MAHLE’s product portfolio and on its path to become a systems provider for all powertrain technologies,” said Dr. Jörg Stratmann, chairman of the management board and CEO of MAHLE. Integrated drive systems have decisive advantages over individual modules, according to MAHLE. For example, take the drive motor, transmission or power electronics -- their components are ideally coordinated, their construction can be more compact, and they also can be used more flexibly in different vehicle types. 18

Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week Organizers Announce New Location For 2020 Conference Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week (HDAW), the largest North American gathering of the independent heavy-duty aftermarket industry, has announced that the 15th annual conference, traditionally held in Las Vegas, will move in 2020 to the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas. The move will accommodate the increased need and industry demand for more exhibit space, expanding the Product Expo by 80 percent, from 100,000 to 180,000 square feet, and adding more than 250,000 square feet of meeting and event space, allowing HDAW to expand opportunities for industry meetings, events and distributor education offerings. HDAW 2020 will be held Jan. 27-30, 2020. This business-to-business event welcomes more than 2,500 executives and managers from the U.S., Canada and six other countries – including distributors, suppliers, service providers, educators and industry media. Event organizers say this move guarantees the supplier community larger exhibit space options and an accessible hotel venue making the event convenient and affordable. “Everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes the Gaylord Texan,” said Tim Kraus, president and chief operating officer of the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association. “The decision to move was not taken lightly. It comes after much consideration of industry feedback and our goal to ensure the industry has the best opportunity to come together and conduct business. This new space will provide a more business-culture-focused venue, which will allow us 26

In addition, the event will feature a product expo with the latest in heavy-duty parts and services on display. Product experts will be available to assist attendees with gathering the information they need to make buying decisions. Attendees also will benefit from the multiple peer networking opportunities, social and spouse activities, as well as the popular supplier and distributor one-on-one meetings, giving the heavyduty aftermarket community opportunities to share ideas, collaborate, make business connections and have some fun. “HDAW is the premier event of the year for networking and industry learning,” said Andy Robblee, president of Six Robblees’ Inc. and CVSN.“As an independent distributor, I am thrilled that the ownership group continues to invest in and look for ways to move the industry and the conference forward. Car Care Council North America Created The Car Care Council today announced an agreement with the Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA Rich White Canada) and the Asociación Nacional de Representantes, Importadores y Distribuidores de Refacciones y Accesorios para Automóviles, A.C. (ARIDRA) to create Car Care Council North America to direct the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign in the United States, Canada and Mexico. “Car Care Council North America builds on the positive reputation and image of the current Car Care Council, that has been funded and directed by the Auto Care Association for nearly 20 years as a credible source of information about the benefits of vehicle maintenance, care and repair,” said Rich White, Car Care Council executive director. “As everyone working in the global auto care industry knows, proper vehicle maintenance is a universal issue and a challenge that has no borders. Expanding the Car Care Council initiatives in Canada and Mexico is a logical next step in educating consumers about the benefits of regular vehicle upkeep,” said Bill Hanvey, Auto Care Association president and CEO. “We are thrilled to reinforce our association’s ongoing partnerships with AIA Canada and ARIDRA.” “The North American automotive aftermarket industry is more connected than ever before,” says Jean-François Champagne, 30
president, AIA Canada. “Establishing the CCCNA as an organization that reaches across borders to provide extensive consumer education on vehicle care and maintenance in all three countries together is a clear reflection of that interconnectivity. AIA Canada is proud to be a part of this initiative.” “The creation of the expanded council seeks the unification of services in the United States, Canada and Mexico, to ensure that vehicles have preventive and not corrective maintenance. We intend
to create consumer awareness to keep the vehicles in optimal condition,” said Alejandro Calderón, ARIDRA president. “For ARIDRA, it is an honor to join Car Care Council North America, which will surely help reduce accidents and increase vehicle passenger safety.” AIA Canada is the national trade association that brings together the entire automotive aftermarket supply and service chain. AIA’s mandate is to promote, educate and represent members in areas that impact the growth and prosperity of the industry. ARIDRA is a civil association based in Mexico City, which includes manufacturers, representatives, importers and distributors of automobile spare parts and accessories. Founded in 1943, it represents the image of the aftermarket in Mexico. It has been acting on behalf of its members for

Alliance President and CEO John Washbish Accepts Northwood Outstanding Business Leader Award
PetersonPULSE™ is named a 2019 ‘Top 20 Product’ by HDT Magazine Peterson Manufacturing is honored to win Heavy Duty Trucking magazine’s 2019 ‘Top 20 Products’ award for its PetersonPULSE™ Intelligent Trailer System. The significant award, announced March 18 at the American Trucking Association’s Technology & Maintenance Council annual meeting in Atlanta, is presented by HDT editors who identify the best new trucking products introduced––and commercially available––the previous year. Engineered and all USAmade specifically for fleets, the PetersonPULSE™ system brings CAN-Bus technology and telematic capability to trailers. It controls and detects real-time status of vital trailer systems––lights, ABS, tire pressure, cargo temperature, and more––and also alerts drivers and fleet managers via Bluetooth and cellular communications. PetersonPULSE™ effectively makes fleet trailers as smart and safe as today’s new trucks. All products considered for Top 20 awards are evaluated in three areas: level of innovation; ability to address industry issues; and potential benefit to a fleet’s bottom line. Once selected by HDT editors, the list of award candidates is then reviewed by the HDT Editorial Advisory Board, a small group of fleet professionals who help determine the Top 20 award winners. “After all the work that went into bringing such an innovative product to market, it’s very satisfying to have the revolutionary nature of the PetersonPULSE™ system recognized by industry professionals,” said Al Anderson, Corporate Director of Heavy Duty Sales. “We couldn’t be more excited and proud of John,” said Northwood University President and CEO Keith Pretty. “John is a Northwood man. He has dedicated his life and career to the automotive market. His roots are here at Northwood. We’d like to think that some of his wild success comes from his foundation he received here.” Washbish was officially bestowed the honor at Northwood’s 39th annual ceremony at The Breakers Hotel. More than 200 people including the 2019 incoming honoree class, past honorees, board members and Northwood students, friends and family attended the event. The award is intended to recognize leaders in the American free enterprise system. Northwood University Board of Trustees members select awardees based on each nominee’s contribution to the philosophy of private enterprise, support of the integration of business and the arts, contribution to education, economic innovation, creative marketing ideas, community involvement, religious leadership, and philanthropic contributions, as well as business success. A 50-year industry veteran described by Northwood as an “icon” of the automotive aftermarket, Washbish has been leading the Aftermarket Auto Parts Alliance since Jan. 1, 2010. In the near decade he has spent as president there, he has expanded the company’s international presence first by joining forces with TEMOT International and then by becoming the first program group to create a footprint in China. Washbish’s industry career began as a boy at his father’s automotive and heavy-duty warehouse in Louisville, Kentucky. He worked through almost every level of the supply chain, graduated from Northwood University, and began his adult career with AEC Universal Joints. For the next 35 years, Washbish’s abilities as a leader became more and more apparent as he successfully moved up the ranks at a number of companies, including Michigan Engine bearings, Clevite Engine Parts, Dana Corp. and Affinia Group Inc. Northwood University student Morgen Panning, left, introduced John R. Washbish, presented with the school’s Outstanding Business Leader award. August 2019
