hen I was a young man here in the U.S., I often watched a Saturday afternoon show on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) called “Wide World of Sports.” Airing for 37 years, it had a longevity rarely seen these days, and a motto of “spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sports.” Why do I mention this? Because Aftermarket International also covers its industry from all four corners of the globe. We have added a number of new shows in the past dozen years, which has helped us reach new readers and new advertisers. And it’s something we plan on continuing—postal rates notwithstanding. For example, this past April, we were here, there and everywhere: Europe: Automechanika Istanbul, ReMaTec, and Autopromotec Asia: Automechanika Dubai; North America: INA PAACE; Central America: Latin Auto Parts Expo; South America: Expopartes It’s enough to make your head spin… and fill your passport with stamps. We took a bit of a breather in August, but we were still on the road: Asia: MIMS Automechanika Moscow; Europe: Equip Auto. And to conclude our year, we are making sure we hit those airports again! North America: AAPEX, SEMA, Big R /ATRA, Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week (Feb. 2020), and Expo Transporte; Asia: Automechanika Shanghai This list doesn’t even include Automechanika Frankfurt, which occurs only on the even-numbered years.. I want to emphasize our participation in Expo Transporte. Primarily visited by those in the heavy-duty market, this show in Guadalajara, Mexico, is a new one for us. It was a recommendation from the good folks at Peterson Manufacturing, and after researching, we found it a good fit and decided to participate. Look for an article on Expo Transporte in this issue too. Now, let’s get to this issue. To begin, Jim Wilder, whom we introduced as a contributor in August, has been promoted to editorial director. After a distinguished career, Wilder recently retired from an aftermarket trade journal. We have been admiring his work from afar, all the while hoping we would one day get the chance to convince him to join our team. Fortunately, he agreed. Please see his column in this and future issues. We are also excited to announce our new technical editor, another automotive industry veteran, Ron Henningsen. This issue’s two technical articles are as follows: “Advanced Drives Assistant Systems (ADAS) Require Higher Skill Set.” Thank you to Hunter Engineering for its assistance with this feature. And “Rotor Transfer Layer and TransferLayer Problems.” You may notice that these technical articles contain more photos and diagrams than past articles, both in our print and digital editions. We hope they make these very sophisticated subjects easier to understand. This is our final issue of 2019. Thank you for your past, present, and future support. Please feel free to contact us at aftermarketinternational.com. You can also email me at bsgrep@aol.com. Lastly, please don’t hesitate to read past issues via our digital editions or to contact our advertisers via the live links in their ads. Or, if you prefer, ask me to contact them on your behalf and I will be happy to do so.

Editor’s Note
Who Is This Guy? Comments from the Editorial Director Dear Readers: By now, many of you may have noticed a byline in a past issue of Aftermarket International pertaining to the cover feature—mine. And, many of you may have asked yourself: “Who is this guy?” Well, I’ve been a member of the automotive aftermarket since 1981; longer if you count that I am the son of an automotive-repair shop owner. Although, my work at his shop was limited, I recall the long hours my dad put in and the stories he would tell when he returned home every night. My field of choice was journalism and I went the newspaper route for the first five years of my career until I was offered a job as editor of the automotive trade journal, Muffler Digest. Many specialty muffler shops had more business than they could handle back then, since stainless-steel components were still in their infancy. Fast forward four years, and I was snagged by AP Parts, an exhaust-system manufacturer. I joined its public relations department. I worked closely with the engineering and marketing teams, gaining a vast knowledge of the products the company produced and the aftermarket it served. The company still exists under the name AP Emissions Technologies. In 1990, I was offered a job as editor at Undercar Digest, the successor of Muffler Digest, and remained there until this past January when I retired. I wanted to stay active in the aftermarket without the daily office grind. That’s when I was contacted by Aftermarket International Publisher Brad Glazer, who offered me this job. As a result, in upcoming issues you will see an assortment of technical articles covering a wide variety of topics designed to assist technicians dealing with the latest vehicle technologies, as well as some repair basics for those just entering the automotive-repair field. You’ll also see some additional bylines. My longtime associate and friend, Ron Henningsen, has joined the team as technical editor. Ron has been involved in the automotive-repair industry his entire life as a professional trainer. He continues to attend classes to stay abreast of the ever-changing technologies. He also served as technical editor for Undercar Digest for more than three decades. In addition, we’ll be presenting some of the latest automotive findings from professors at leading automotive technical universities and from some of their mostoutstanding students, who now play active roles in the aftermarket and the original-equipment segments of the industry. Ron and I look forward to hearing from our readers as we enhance our knowledge of the automotive aftermarket on an international scale. I’m sure we’ll be hearing from some longtime friends and form bonds with new acquaintances in this industry. We look forward to hearing from you.
What else makes Jim Wilder and Ron Henningsen tick? Well, I’m a fan of the Old West. I recently authored my first western novel, Terror Near Town, which is available on Amazon. A sequel to the novel, Tough Times in Grubville, is expected to be released by the end of this year. My friend Ron is a “car guy” through and through. He owns a 1927 Ford T-bucket roadster, along with a barn full of project vehicles with build dates ranging from the 1940s through the 1970s.

Rotor Transfer Layer and Transfer-Layer Problems By Ron Henningsen, Technical Editor and Jim Wilder, Editorial Director
T
wo terms that technicians frequently see regarding a transfer layer of brake-pad material onto a rotor are “abrasive” and “adherent.” The true definition of these two terms, as they are applied, is that an abrasive brake material for pads does not establish a transfer layer. Abrasive brake material also will cause a higher rate of wear of the rotor and the brake pads. Adherent brake material is designed to establish or create a transfer layer of brake-pad material onto the rotor. When the brakes are applied with this transfer layer established, the friction between the pads and the rotor is created by similar material on both surfaces (the pads and the rotor). FRICTION AND TRANSFER MATERIAL STATEMENTS Some aftermarket manufacturers report that abrasive friction material is undesirable. It has been stated that brakelife expectancy of the front brakes can be as low as 10,000 to 20,000 miles on Original Equipment (OE) brakes that use abrasive friction. Also, it would be logical that a greater amount of brake dust would be created when using abrasive friction than when using adherent friction. It also has been stated that some friction in reality is a blend of adherent and abrasive materials. This is, perhaps, reality for brake applications on everyday general-use family vehicles. For performance vehicles capable of excessively high speeds it can be an entirely different story.

Aftermarket International
Generally, the brake-friction category of semi-metallic or metallic brake-friction material is listed as abrasive friction. Most NAO (Non-Asbestos Organic) pads also fall into the abrasive-friction category. The true abrasive-friction group of disc-brake pads does not establish a transfer layer, creates a higher rate of rotor and pad wear and may have a shorter service life than adherent friction. You may on occasion see some reference to the type of brakes used on high-performance vehicles but generally there is little if any information available as to whether a vehicle has adherent or abrasive friction. Looking in various aftermarket manufacturers’ brake catalogs you will find generalized descriptions of what the various types of friction are but really no statements that the friction is abrasive, adherent or a blend of the two. In other words, when installing aftermarket friction material, you may normally only know from the catalog that the friction is described as ceramic, semi-met or NAO. In addition, there is no way of learning what was on the vehicle from the factory. CERAMIC BRAKE PADS AND EXCESSIVE TRANSFER-LAYER BUILDUP Ceramic pads became popular many years ago as a way to eliminate the brake-dusting issue with vehicle wheels and also because they were reportedly quieter. While both of these statements are true, an unexpected consequence came with the use of ceramic pads on many different vehicles. Ceramic pads

do build up a transfer layer, which in many cases can become excessive in its thickness. Now it must be understood that on everyday light vehicles and trucks, there is less airflow across on the inside surface the brake rotor than on the outside. For this reason, a thicker transfer-layer buildup takes place on the inside of the rotor than on the outside. Figures 1 & 2 show the inside of rotors. Figure 3 shows the outside of a rotor. Note the large difference in the amount of transfer layer between the outside and inside surfaces of the rotor. In areas of the world where corrosion is likely, mostly due to snow and ice and the substances used to melt them, rust forms at the outer edge of the rotor’s braking surface and works toward the center of the rotor. This rust has a jacking effect, lifting the transfer layer off the surface of the rotor. In many instances, flaking such as that shown in Figures 1 & 2, along with noise and pedal movement during brake application would be present. This problem happens both with OE and aftermarket rotors. The solution has been to install a different set of ceramic pads with an updated brake-material formulation and new rotors. One very inaccurate myth that is widely circulated says that the metal on the inside of the rotor is often defective or of an incorrect formulation. A little commonsense thinking will quickly dispel this myth, as the entire braking surface of the rotor is cast when poured and therefore it’s impossible to have different metals on the inside and outside braking surfaces.
WHAT’S A NORMAL TRANSFER LAYER? Some aftermarket companies state that a normal transfer layer will appear as a black stripe or band along the friction surface of the rotor. In the real world, this banding is usually more evident on the outside of the rotor than on the inside. Figures 4, 5 and 6 show what could be considered a normal transfer layer. BEDDING IN BRAKE PADS According to some definitions, bedding in brake pads is done to establish the transfer layer from the pads to the rotor. According to other definitions of the same term, it means to perform a post-cure of the brake friction material. Still others think that by bedding in or seating in the brake pads, you cause a smoothing or change in the roughness average of the brake pads. Just understand and put the term into context with the way the expression “bedding in brake pads” is used. If it’s used in support of establishing a transfer layer, it means just that, establishing the transfer layer. When used in another context it could mean something different. Some aftermarket manufacturers or parts suppliers give specific instructions on bedding in or seating in new pads, while others offer instructions only pertaining to specific formulation groups. In other words, they may instruct you to follow the same beddingin braking sequence of a certain number of stops followed by a cool-down period for a very small vehicle or a mid- to large-sized SUV, provided both are using the same brake formulation.

BRAKE JUDDER IS NOT ROTOR PULSATION Brake judder is caused by the friction material under pressure contacting a rotor as the vehicle is driven. If a rotor has an uneven, imbalanced or contaminated transfer layer, the pads will have a varying amount of friction or stopping force as the rotor passes under them. This may lead to what is known as brake judder. Brake-pedal pulsation is usually caused by a thicknessvariation problem of the rotor not by a transfer layer. While it is true that the transfer layer may vary slightly in thickness the amount of variation would be so microscopic that it would not cause a pedal-pulsation problem. It’s the difference in the friction quality of one part or section of the rotor compared to other parts that cause the brake-judder issue. For this reason, it’s very important that the detailed instructions, if they are supplied by the brake-pad manufacturer, be followed to establish the initial transfer layer on a rotor. MAINTAINING FRICTION BALANCE AND ESTABLISHING FRONT-TO-REAR BRAKE BALANCE Sometimes it’s common for shops to “pad-slap” vehicles. This refers to replacing worn-out front pads with a new set and returning the vehicle to service without doing much of anything else. This can lead to a variety of brake problems, especially in the area of a lack of stopping power, brake-pedal feel or a frontto-rear brake-balance issue. By anyone’s commonsense theory of brakes, if you have brake pads that are of the adherent type or a blended type, you must start off with a “clean or machined rotor” in order to establish the correct transfer layer and coefficient of friction. Pad-slapping a vehicle without any concern for the type of pads previously used and the transfer layer that may be on a rotor could lead to a variety of problems, some of which can create a degree of liability. Obviously, the correct solution would be to turn the old rotors or replace the old rotors with new ones, which will enable you to establish the correct transfer layer and brake pad-to-rotor interaction. Many years ago, it was common for vehicles that were not driven a great deal or were usually driven slowly around town to have squeaky brakes (think little old lady driving to the local store). The solution was to take the vehicle out for an aggressive “stopping experience,” allow for a cooldown period and then return the vehicle to the customer. During a brake-engineering design and testing class, presented by an engineer from one of the “Big Three” automakers, it was stated that the following could be thought of as a general rule for the establishment and maintenance of a transfer layer on a rotor. • At slow to moderate speeds, a transfer layer is being used. • At moderate to mid-range to high speeds, a transfer layer is being established. • At very high speeds, a transfer layer may be laid down excessively with buildup. By understanding these three generalized areas about a transfer layer you can easily understand that when a vehicle is only driven at very slow speeds, the transfer layer will not be 10

maintained and the brakes may squeak. This also explains the phenomenon of why certain vehicles using certain types of pads will have a pedal shake, severe brake judder or other problems after making a very high-speed stop. The classic example is a vehicle with ceramic pads that develops a pedal shake even under light braking. WHAT IS NOT A TRANSFER LAYER ON A BRAKE ROTOR The following photos show what might appear at first glance to be a transfer layer on a rotor. Remember, a transfer layer is a molecular bonding of the friction material to the rotor, which then acts on the pads as they contact the rotor. In Figure 7 the rusty-looking rotor is a rear rotor on a truck that uses semi-metallic brake pads. This rust is the residue on the surface of the rotor that remains after the vehicle is driven. It was then parked and more rust occurred because of high humidity. After two or three quick stops this rotor would be shiny and clean without any evidence of the rust. Figure 8 shows what a rotor looks like after heat buildup or an overheating condition of the rotor. While there may be some material transfer because of the rotor or brake pad running excessively hot, this in itself is not what we consider a transfer layer. n

ADAS Requires Higher Skill Set By Jim Wilder, Contributing Editor
A
dvanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), once only available on high-end vehicles, are becoming more and more common on everyday entry-level and mid-priced vehicles. These recent advancements in collision avoidance are the precursors to systems that will make the autonomous vehicle possible. In my opinion, the driverless car won’t be commonplace until the 2030s, but shops that take pride in the four-wheel-alignment services they offer should be taking their skill levels up a notch if they haven’t already started. Pete Liebetreu, vice president of marketing for Hunter Engineering, Bridgeton, Mo., USA, noted ADAS-equipped vehicles require a level of awareness on the technician’s part beyond classic chassis, suspension and alignment adjustments. Today’s vehicles are equipped with steering-angle sensors (SAS), as well as ADAS and, in many vehicles; SAS has to be reset
prior to alignment. It’s equally important that the steering-angle sensors be reset on vehicles for ADAS to function properly, he said. Setting SAS requires upgrades in equipment and training, but the benefits of having the right equipment and highly trained technicians will eventually determine which shops will continue to provide alignment services. Kaleb Silver, Hunter Engineering director of product management, explained that there are more than 90 million vehicles on the road today in the USA alone that require steering-angle reset and 5 million of those vehicles require it for ADAS. In Europe, an estimated 40% of the vehicles in operation require SAS reset as part of an alignment, he said. In addition to having anti-lock braking systems and electronic stability control, these vehicles may have electric power steering. Add lane departure, lane assist, active steering and parking assist for many of these vehicles. The latest vehicles also are equipped

with surround view, cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, emergency braking, pedestrian detections, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance, traffic-signal recognition and blind-spot detection. Many of these may malfunction if the steering-angle sensor has not been reset properly, he said. Hunter Engineering is staying on the forefront of this technology and is working continuously to universalize ADAS reset procedures into its guided alignment software, calling it Safety System Alignment. Keep in mind that procedures for resetting SAS can vary since automakers have designed these systems differently than their competitors. Liebetreu said that new-car dealerships likely would promote that their operations are ready to handle this new state-ofthe-art service, grabbing the attention of motorists. However, he foresees that high-quality alignment shops can compete with dealerships
just as they always have if they invest in training and in equipment. He noted that over the years, many successful alignment shops have taken in business from smaller generalrepair shops that fail to offer alignment. The same situation applies to collision shops that make body and frame repairs, but ship out the alignment work to a reputable alignment shop that can guarantee that the ADAS will work properly. These collision shops have made substantial investments in recent years to handle modern vehicle designs and clean-air standards – and may decide not to invest in ADAS technology. Some smaller vehicle dealerships also send alignment work to independent shops for the same reason, he said. The opportunity to not just survive, but to thrive, is available to shop owners who have the will power to evolve with the industry, Liebetreu said. n

Arnott® Introduces New Premium Coil Spring Conversion Kit for 2004-2009 Jaguar XJ Series
Cloyes Timing Chain Water Pump Kits Designed for the replacement of worn or damaged timing chains, tensioners, sprockets, guides, and water pumps, Cloyes timing chain water pump kits provide professional technicians and do-it-yourself customers with a complete repair solution. “The addition of chain-driven water pumps to our timing chain kits is a natural next step for Cloyes,” said Jason Thompson, vice president of engineering and product development for Cloyes. “With water pumps failing more frequently than timing chains, we’re now giving our customers the opportunity to replace these components concurrently, which can reduce comebacks and additional labor fees for the consumer.” Timing chain-driven water pumps should always be replaced at the same time as the timing chain to reduce warranties, customer comebacks, and preserve long-term system performance. Water pump replacement rates are nearly eight times higher than timing chain replacement rates, according to the Auto Care Association. Replacement rates reflect the percent of cars that had a relevant part replaced or service performed during a sample year. The first two timing chain water pump kits from Cloyes are for General Motors (GM) 2.0, 2.2, and 2.4-liter Ecotec engines and cover nearly 4 million vehicles in operation in North America. In 2019, Cloyes will complete development of additional timing chain water pump.

The recent integration with STEMCO enables end users to seamlessly access information from their STEMCO wireless products including tire pressure, inflation and mileage events, helping them to better manage their fleets and avoid damage and downtime, the companies say. “Tying STEMCO into the Road Ready system is the latest major development in creating a complete telematics network,” says Rob Richard, general manager, Truck-Lite’s Road Ready division. “Any fleet currently utilizing wireless STEMCO systems can immediately incorporate and benefit from Road Ready.” Truck-Lite says the SBI will transmit data from the complete suite of STEMCO wireless products, including the AirBat Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS); Aeris Automatic Tire Inflation System (ATIS); and the TracBat hubodometer. “Our wireless ATIS and TPMS products are designed to provide valuable data to our customers, and this integration makes that data even more accessible,” adds Lee Alexander, STEMCO director of product management, innovative tire and mileage solutions. “This data makes a significant difference for fleets in the way they manage and run their businesses.” October 2019

Israel Becomes Latest Hotbed for Auto Tech Around the time General Motors was heading toward bankruptcy, its top executives placed a bet on a little-known corner of the automotive world that’s now paying dividends. GM opened a technical center in the Israeli coastal city of Herzliya in 2008, a year before its Chapter 11 reorganization, becoming the first major automaker to secure a foothold in what’s become an oasis for mobility startups on a par with Silicon Valley. “They understood this was the future of the company,” Gil Golan, a GM lifer who lobbied for the Advanced Technical Center and now is its executive director, said in an interview. “It was like a baby.” Since GM, dozens of automakers and Tier 1 suppliers -- including BMW, Hyundai, Bosch and Lear Gil Golan -- have opened similar centers in Israel to tap into the talent here. Ford Motor Co., which acquired Israeli computer vision company SAIPS in 2016, formally opened its own r&d center in Tel Aviv last week. The boom is driven by culture and necessity. Near-universal conscription into the Israel Defense Forces has instilled a sense of maturity and leadership among Israeli entrepreneurs. And many autonomous technologies, from cybersecurity systems to radar and lidar sensors, have their roots in military applications. The culture that encourages risk- taking, local leaders say, stems from a historical lack of natural resources and an ingrained belief that Israelis can overcome challenges by creating something where nothing exists. 22

“We go after the impossible,” Golan said. “This is how we’re educated from childhood.” While the country produces talent in multiple areas, the auto industry has become a major player in recent years. Since 2013, some $6 billion has been invested in high-tech mobility startups, according to data from EcoMotion, a nonprofit that launched an annual mobility conference in Tel Aviv that year. Since then, the number of mobility startups has exploded to 644 from 87, organizers say. They make up about 10 percent of the country’s total startups. “We’re becoming this mobility hub that everyone comes to brainstorm, test and develop,” Orlie Dahan, EcoMotion’s executive director, told Automotive News. “You can Skype and fly in from time to time, but there’s nothing like being close and on the ground.” NEXT TO APPLE That’s the message Golan lobbied to GM’s top brass even as the company hemorrhaged cash in the depths of the Great Recession. The automaker had been scouting in the region since the late 1990s, but having a physical presence before many competitors helped GM attract top talent -- and keep it after rivals followed suit. The site today has roughly 350 employees -mostly computer scientists and electrical engineers -- in 50,000 square feet of office space. It expanded to a second location a few blocks away in late 2017. The new building features a trendy groundfloor cafeteria and two levels of open office space. Meeting rooms bear the names of famous inventors, including da Vinci, Newton and Curie.

The site is next to offices for 1,700 employees of Apple, near Amazon and about half a mile from Microsoft, all of which are looking for similar talent, Golan said. GM workers there help develop sensor hardware and are directly responsible for multiple innovations in vehicles today, including a map on the myChevrolet app for users of the Bolt electric vehicle that shows how far the car can take them and nearby charger locations. The team also was responsible for the OnStar app interface in Europe. GOLAN: “GO AFTER THE IMPOSSIBLE.” “This is my startup,” Golan said of the company’s Israel operations. “I’m building something from scratch. The auto industry has a great story to tell. We’re impacting society, and [workers] want to be part of something big.” Ford now hopes to replicate that success. The
automaker has been scouting Israel for talent throughout the last decade, but last week, it committed more firmly with a research center here. Ford Research Center, Israel is next to offices for SAIPS, and together, the two take up roughly 5,000 square feet, according to Udy Danino, SAIPS’ founder and CEO. Executive Chairman Bill Ford attended the center’s ribbon-cutting along with his family, including his son Will, who works at Fontinalis Partners, a venture capital firm the elder Ford started in 2009 to invest in promising startups. Bill Ford said it’s important for the automaker to have a permanent presence in the country. “Ford needs to cast our net as wide as we can and to reach innovators wherever they are,” he told Automotive News. “Israel is such a hotbed of innovation right now. We need to stay very close to the ecosystem that’s developed here.”

The center’s research will focus on interior monitoring, sensors, over-the-air updates, cybersecurity and autonomous technology. It will work closely with other Ford sites around the globe. It will be staffed by 10 to 12 employees to start, Bill Ford said, but that number should grow, just as the company has boosted its employment in Palo Alto, Calif., to 250 employees since planting a flag there in 2015. “It will, importantly, provide an access point for all these entrepreneurs to be able to find Ford Motor Co.,” he said. “Somebody can become an advocate, then, in our system and get them to the right people and make sure their voice isn’t lost.” ISRAELI INNOVATION Bill Ford’s visit last week was his first to Israel. He swam in the Dead Sea, hiked the ancient Masada mountaintop fortress and toured the Golan Heights region. He planned to visit Jerusalem after attending the r&d center opening.

He said he admired the country’s ability to innovate through struggles, whether crafting unique irrigation systems in a desert climate or adopting top-notch military practices because of constant tensions in the region. Ford’s research center in Israel formally opened last week with events including a ribbon-cutting by Executive Chairman Bill Ford, second from right. “They keep running into obstacles, either natural or man-made, and they keep solving their problems,” Ford said. “It’s not surprising that kind of creativity and brainpower has the ability to change our industry and many other industries as well.” Ford Motor’s history makes the company’s arrival in Israel particularly notable. Founder Henry Ford was known to espouse anti-Semitic views, although Bill Ford, his great-grandson, has supported a number of Jewish causes. The automaker was the only sponsor of the 1997 NBC commercial-free broadcast of Schindler’s List, and Ford has donated to and supported filmmaker

Steven Spielberg’s USC Shoah Foundation. Bill Ford received the organization’s Ambassador for Humanity Award in 2015. CONGESTION RELIEF The auto industry faces a unique set of challenges, especially in densely populated cities such as Tel Aviv. Side streets are clogged with cars parked on both shoulders, leaving narrow driving corridors. Bicycles, electric scooters and mopeds are ubiquitous, and parking is so scarce that the local government operates a large lot on the city’s outskirts where commuters can board free buses to central points. Solving congestion was one of the many topics that startups at the 2019 EcoMotion conference last week tried to address, along with medical transportation, vehicle maintenance and noise cancellation, among others. “It’s in our DNA,” Dahan said of innovation. “It’s being fearless of failing.” EcoMotion, run by a joint venture between the Israeli government and the nonprofit Israel Innovation Institute, has grown rapidly since its inception in 2013. There were 4,000 attendees at this year’s event. In addition to Bill Ford, speakers included government officials, a vice president at the Bird scooter company and former Ford CEO Mark Fields. For the first time, the North American International Auto Show in Detroit sent a representative as part of a Michigan delegation to explore partnership opportunities. To kick off the event, organizers allowed anyone to come up to the main stage, grab the mic and make a 15-second pitch to the crowd. A line wrapped around the stage with dozens, if not hundreds, of startups offering mobility-related products. “I’m not a prophet; I can’t tell you Aftermarket International

Autopromotec 2019 Successful The 28th edition of Autopromotec, the biennial international Aftermarket exhibition of automotive equipment, ended successfully on Sunday, May 26, 2019. The event brought together the entire vehicle assistance sector in Bologna in a five-day event dedicated to recent market developments, technological innovation, specialisation and professional training. Figures confirm Autopromotec as a global reference point for the vehicle maintenance sector. In fact, 1,676 companies have chosen the event as a showcase to present their products and services, with a 4.4% increase in the number of participating companies compared 2017. Of these, the share of foreign companies was 43%, for a total of 53 countries represented. The event, which took place throughout 17 exhibition Halls and 5 outdoor areas, with a total exhibition area of 162,000 m2, attracted 119,108 professional operators, up by 4.85% compared to 2017, who had the opportunity to meet specialist companies from all sub-sectors of the Aftermarket. Autopromotec demonstrated its increasingly global outlook with an 18% share of foreign professionals and the presence of more than 100 delegates from 32 countries. Buyers and institutional operators were the protagonists of 629 B2B meetings with Italian exhibitors, organized as part of a plan to promote Autopromotec as well as the entire automotive aftermarket chain internationally, the result of an ongoing collaboration with the Emilia-Romagna Region and ICE (Italian Trade Agency). The event witnessed also a strong increase in digital activity: in the first five months of 2019, the Autopromotec website recorded 234,868 single visitors (+28.3% compared to the same period in 2017), for a total of 2,476,314 pages viewed (+25% compared to the same period in 2017). The number of users who followed the 2019 edition of Autopromotec live, interacting actively on social profiles, was also remarkable. Aftermarket International

Confirming Autopromotec as a venue of in-depth analysis and professional growth for the average operator in the car repair market, the 2019 edition explored key issues for the entire automotive after-sales market. During the more than 20 appointments scheduled for the AutopromotecEDU conference calendar and round tables, centred around correct information, training and timely discussions, what emerged was how the evolution of the market and new mobility scenarios require new and ground-breaking solution to be applied also to vehicle assistance, besides the need to acquire new professional skills and marketing tools. The 2019 edition of Autopromotec attracted a wide audience of professionals and enthusiasts thanks to special initiatives such as the “Hybrid & ADAS Village”, an area dedicated to demonstrations and tests on the latest generation of ADAS systems on hybrid cars, created in collaboration with Quattroruote Professional; “Autopromotec Motorsport”, on the other hand, an initiative sponsored by ACI Sport and ANFIA-Motorsport, celebrated the relationship between aftermarket firms and the motorsport sector; the “Officina X.0” project, developed in collaboration with Accenture, highlighted the role of digitisation and connectivity in tomorrow’s workshops. Autopromotec, held in the heart of the “Motor Valley”, could not neglect to tribute the Italian genius, creativity and passion for engines with “Italy, passion in red”, a special exhibition of vintage cars managed by Ruote Classiche, with 6, strictly red, Italian vintage cars, organized in collaboration with FCA Heritage and private collectors. The organizers of Autopromotec are already looking at the future, and the dates of the next edition of the fair have already been defined: the 29th edition of Autopromotec will be held from the 26th to the 30th May, 2021, as always at the Bologna fair-grounds. aftermarketinternational.com

suggests that the connected vehicle market in Asia Pacific is expected to reach $47.4 billion by 2023,” according to a press release. “As such, the sector shines a light on communication between the vehicle, infrastructure, pedestrians and networks. And with this in mind, show exhibitors will cover the latest innovations for electromobility, intelligent vehicle technology, car connectivity, mobility services, as well as lightweight materials and more.” The automotive service sector will be one of the most important aspects of the show, as it has in years past, because many maturing automotive markets, such as China, are becoming more established. “For example, last year, cars aged between four and nine accounted for 50 percent of vehicles on the road, consequently bringing the demand for auto repairs and maintenance to an all-time high,” according to a press release. “The rise of China’s automotive aftermarket will bring forward new business opportunities to its underlying sectors and will rely on the continuous smart transformation of the supply chain.” The show’s “Supply Chain” and “Chain Store” zones will return to address the changing needs in the transforming local auto market. Customization is also seeing more attention. “Reports project that the global market is likely to yield more than 253 billion dollars by the end of 2024,” according to the
press release. And that is why the show is including a “Customizing” sector at its 2019 show. The “Customizing” sector will span 44,000 square meters of space, and will include the latest trends for exterior, interior, and high-performance customization. It will also feature sport exhaust systems, sport air filters, and sport chassis, as well as engine tuning, audio modification, seats, recreational vehicles (RV), and offroad vehicle modification. “In conjunction with China’s auto market becoming more diverse, the speed at which efficiency and quality have accelerated significantly too,” Cheng Yongshun, vice president of China National Machinery Industry International, the show’s co-organizer, said in a press release. “On top of this, the overwhelming increase for customization will continue to play a vital role in bolstering the demand for interior and exterior accessories and modification. The shift in consumer preference has led to more emphasis on aesthetic appeal and enhanced performance, as well as the delivery of entertaining driving experiences. As such, the new sector will amplify buzz around the fast-growing customization and racing markets.” For more information, please contact Messe Frankfurt at auto@hongkong.messefrankfurt.com.

Expo Transporte The 18th annual Expo Transporte will take place from Oct. 16 through Oct. 18, 2019 at Puebla Exhibitor Center—and reports that 100 percent of its exhibition spaces have already been sold. In fact, about 400 exhibitors will offer their products and services this year, with approximately 45,000 attendees enjoying more than 60,000 square meters of space throughout the center. Expo Transporte chose Puebla to host its show because it’s located less than three hours from about 40 percent of the transport companies and users in the region, according to a press release, which adds “this constitutes a very good investment opportunity for
34 36
participating exhibitors.” This year’s event will focus on three major topics that concern commercial vehicles: road safety, environment, and competitiveness. That’s because, as the press release explains, these are “three fundamental pillars [that] offer a better quality of life to citizens and strengthen the national economy, bringing together, as is tradition, the authorized voices of the sector.” But this year’s Expo Transporte boasts something new and exciting for its attendees: an exhibition track where they will be able to see a panoramic view of Puebla, while enjoying the experience in the newest models of the ANPACT associates, which include Dina, Freightliner, Hino, Isuzu, Kenworth, Mack, Man, Mercedes-Benz, Scania, Volkswagen, Volvo, and more. “Expo Transporte ANPACT 2019 is the first edition in which 100 percent of the spaces were commercialized with 80 days left before the start of the event, which is why it is expected a success for the industry and the state of Puebla,” Miguel Elizalde, executive president of ANPACT, said in a press release. “Expo Transporte ANPACT reflects the consolidation of the commercial vehicle industry in the country and presents the opportunity to show its growth and export capacity, while generating an important economic economy in the state. The success of Expo Transporte ANPACT 2019 is a success shared by the industry and Puebla’s society.” For more information, visit www.expotransporte.com.
