A Quarterly Review of New Products for Aftermarket Executives
W
elcome to 2020! Yep, time flies when you are having fun, even in the automotive aftermarket. Is there a person reading this who is not familiar with Amazon? I doubt it. Two years ago I had a meeting with AC-Delco at AAPEX and asked if their products are sold via Amazon. No surprise…the answer was in the affirmative. So the following interested me, not just because of the Amazon effects and influences on global commerce, but because a) this was related to an aftermarket supplier and b) they are headquartered about ½ hour from Aftermarket International’s parent company, JABS Media LLC. And let me say in advance we do not have a business relationship with them. NOCO (www.no.co) is located in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. They make battery chargers, Jump starters and related products. You can find them at AAPEX and various trade shows around the world. They have been in existence, per their website, since 1914. Chief Visionary Officer (some title !) Jon Nook says sales said regarding sales to Amazon “It’s a significant portion of our sales, and it continues to grow.” Nook has commented however NOCO’s product reviews and ratings on Amazon were not “adding up” and appeared to be targeted by overseas competitors. “It effects our revenue, it effects our profitability, it impacts our brand reputation” Nook explained. NOCO has filed a lawsuit in federal court against almost a dozen foreign companies, primarily in China, claiming they are “gaming” Amazon’s site. Specifically they claim these companies are paying third parties for fake reviews that hurt competition via manipulation of algorithms. Nook says research has shown you can buy a fake review for as little as $2…the cost of a cup of coffee or a bet on a slow-footed nag at your local racetrack. We’ll keep an eye on this story and let you know of any developments. Meanwhile, if readers know of other similar alleged incidents effecting the auto aftermarket please let us know.

Editor’s Note
Coronavirus Impedes Automotive Parts Production Production outside of China may grow As I read and watch coverage of the coronavirus, the United States is warning its citizens that we are likely to see some back orders in smart phones and a shortage of fireworks for our Independence Day celebration on July 4. What they are neglecting to tell us is that order fill rates for delivery of aftermarket automotive parts from China to the U.S. and to many other countries are starting to drop — sometimes as much as 50%. As an industry member explained to me, most major manufacturers of parts with operations in China had enough inventory on their shelves to supply the needs of their customers in February and even part of March. However, many plants in China are working with only 50% or 60% percent of their work forces. It’s not that half of the plant workers are sick, it’s a matter that they are restricted to stay at their homes and not cross specific regional borders where the illness is prevalent. More than 2,700 Chinese, mostly from the city of Wuhan have already died. While the Chinese government might allow a high-ranking manufacturing official to travel on business, the typical assembly-line worker is being forced to stay at home, or at least, not leave his or her immediate community for the time being. Internationally known parts manufacturers that have agreements to produce their components in joint ventures with China always offer paid vacations during the Chinese New Year. The Chinese government has extended this holiday because of the coronavirus and has told these manufacturers to continue paying these workers during their time off. Smaller companies that cannot afford to do so (and some of these are the ones that produce less-than-quality parts) already are closing. While costly, it’s a wise move for the bigger manufacturers to continue the pay because it will enable them to regain their workforces once the virus is under control. Repair shop operators and parts distributors around the world will likely be forced to turn some customers away until the virus is under control and inventories can be built back up. The positive side of this unfortunate virus is that automotive parts manufacturers in other parts of the world have an opportunity for increased sales, and just not on a temporary basis. Because of the spread of this disease, many worldwide manufacturers already are discussing the need to spread out their operations so they won’t be faced with similar problems in decades to come. Some may have already started their strategies because of the tariff wars between the U.S. And China. Now is the time to put them in full gear. Having parts availability is a must for the aftermarket. And by the way, often times new-vehicle sales increases can be a big hinderance to the aftermarket. That’s not likely with this scenario because they have a parts shortage because of the virus as well. Aftermarket manufacturers in Mexico, South America, Europe, the Mid East and other Asian countries would be wise to determine if they are capable of increasing their production levels to help fill the parts-shortage gap. This will not be an easy chore, but it’s one that could help the worldwide economy in these turbulent times. Some Chinese plant operations now only have enough of a work force to run one shift per day, instead of two or three. Instead of looking at this virus as a doomsday affair, it would be much better for the thinking minds of the world to determine how to keep everyday activities involving the automotive international marketplace moving until medical professionals and government officials can circumvent the coronavirus.

Many shops today have gotten out of the habit of road-testing vehicles, especially for anything but a specific handling complaint. Take the vehicle for a ride, as shown, to see how it handles and how it acts. You might find a situation in which the vehicle doesn’t return easily from a right-hand turn, that when compared to returning from a left-hand turn, is actually quite difficult.

Common Chassis-Repair Tips & Tricks By Technical Editor Ron Henningsen and Editorial Director Jim Wilder
N
early every technician has common chassis-repair tips and tricks that his or her fellow alignment, chassis and service technicians could sit around and discuss for days, if not weeks on end. When you work in a shop with shop policies and procedures, as well as your own habits, likes and dislikes, it seems that things are always done in a certain way. People often fail to look outside the box on the way they do things on a normal basis. You show up in the morning, put your uniform on, open your toolbox and you go to work. Boom, boom, boom. At the end of the day, you lock everything up and you go home. Do you ever stop and consider what you’ve done all day? Think about how you did your job and what could have been learned or developed as a new skill or technique to make your job easier

for yourself and to make you more effective and efficient? This article is designed to do just that, to give you some food for thought, for thinking outside the box, so to speak. The photos are not telling you what you have to do. They are not telling you that any of the work shown is mandatory, but the information presented may get you to think about trying it sometime, that it might have been helpful in a previous job. And it it’s a good idea to share these ideas with your fellow technicians during your lunch break or weekly meeting. The typical front-wheeldrive sedan and the mundane work that has become almost automatic for many people is not what we are talking about in this issue. We’re talking about why things are the way they are and what happens when things don’t go right. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy the information presented. April 2020

Take a couple of pieces of tape and a marker with you. When you are going straight down the road put a mark on the tape on the column and the tape on the steering wheel, referencing where the steering wheel is. This should agree with what you find on the alignment rack. If it doesn’t, there’s an issue somewhere in the system.
3
When replacing struts, save yourself some time and trouble by putting a magnetic bubble gauge on the rotor with a couple of lug nuts holding it in place before you remove the strut. After removing the old strut and installing the new one, shift the assembly until the bubble gauge is at the same reading as it was before. This will make life a lot easier when running it over to the alignment rack to set toe or possibly install an alignment cam, if you choose to do that.
5
Draw a line down the center of this strut in relation to the threaded area where the upper strut-mounting nut goes. You’ll see that there is a bend to the strut rod. The vehicle in the first photo did not return from a righthand turn because this strut was bent and a tremendous amount of side force was being put on the strut bearing assembly. This took some time examining the vehicle and a lot of work had been done trying to solve this problem. The fact is that if there is a lack of steering-wheel returnability, you should take the time to find out why and not automatically assume that it is just an alignment angle-related situation. This repair job, per customer’s approval, included the installation of complete front strut assemblies, along with a four-wheel alignment. Aftermarket International

When you get a vehicle that is anything but a fourdoor, front-wheel-drive in your shop, such as a Camaro, Mustang or one of the Chrysler performance vehicles, your specs in your reference books will often tell you that things are not as alignable — but they are. Go on YouTube and type in the specific vehicle and look for any aftermarket kits that might be available to make the car fully alignable and provide the handling performance the customer really wants from it. Some of these YouTube selections are shown. aftermarketinternational.com

Some of the specific information presented on YouTube and on the vendor’s website is shown. This is an upper control-arm adjustment for a late-model Ford Mustang that you won’t find listed in most of the alignment equipment information or the electronic information retrieval systems found in most shops. It’s there but only if your information also contains submissions from aftermarket alignment-kit manufacturers. Just look for it a little bit harder you may find it. It will expand your horizons and enable you to do more professional work and possibly sell more parts to cure problems.

This is an old-style adjustment sleeve on a parallelogram-type steering system, but the fact is that there are literally millions of these vehicles still out there. When you get a vehicle in for alignment, look at the ears on these adjusting sleeves’ clamps. They should be as shown — parallel to each other and not tightened down so excessively that they are touching each other. If they have been excessively bent, you have little choice but to tighten them down that much again. This creates a dilemma, as they should only be parallel as shown.
Aftermarket International
Continuing in the area of toe adjustment, a pipe wrench or locking pliers is actually the least desirable tool to use on a split steering sleeve like the one in the previous photo. A variety of tools are shown here. These tools work better because they, unlike locking pliers and pipe wrenches, don’t create pinch-clamping in the sleeve and allow it to rotate more easily when used.
9
This tie-rod tool is being used. Look at the area where the tool, the second one from the left in the previous photo, is inserted into the split sleeve and how the rotating point load is distributed over a wide area, unlike a pipe wrench that would cause it to somewhat bind on the threads. Younger technicians usually don’t own these tools, as today everything is rack-and-pinion with a jam nut. A locking pliers can be used on the inner tie-rod end to rotate it, but many trucks that are out there and some older vehicles still require tools that work well to enable an accurate toe adjustment.

Although not mentioned by most alignment-equipment manufacturers and not really taught very often, I personally always start up a vehicle and adjust toe with the engine running. This has become even more critical with electronic power-steering-assist vehicles. On some makes of electronic power-steering-assist vehicles, when started, you can actually feel the motor engaging a zero pre-loader initial-engagement tension. Although not required, it is very advisable to do this because if there is any influence because of the power-steering hydraulic system or electronic-assist motor you can easily pick it up on your alignment equipment when you start the vehicle.

This is an alignment screen for a specific make and model of vehicle. Please note that alignment equipment today is “smarter” than it’s ever been. On this vehicle, the alignment readings are all in the “green” but the side to side camber spread should still be corrected. Note that this vehicle requires reset or service of the resetstability-control system as part of the overall alignment.
11 This type of steering system used on many pickups before they went to rack-and-pinion steering has an inner rack-and-pinion type tie-rod end attached to the end of the drive-link jam nut, holding it onto the outer tie-rod end and the other tie-rod end. You may find it advisable to always keep the outer tie-rod end at a right angle to the stud when adjusting. It is the exception rather than the rule, but some vehicles will, because of their geometry and parts alignment, cause a slight amount of toe change as the tie-rod end rocks forward and backward. On some Chevrolet trucks of previous years it was easy to get a tenth of a degree toe mis-adjustment per side, as the outer tie-rod end rotated when you turned the inner tierod end to affect toe. Always keep the housing at a right angle to the stud while you take your reading and make your adjustment and you’ll never have to worry about which ones have this problem and which ones don’t.

Whenever you have a toe situation in which toe is massively out of adjustment you must bring toe into the ballpark or close to being right before you do any other adjustment on the vehicle. Toe that is out as far as shown in this photo (in fact it doesn’t even have to be out this far) will fight any camber adjustment you are performing. If you change parts that affect toe or do any work that affects toe, get the initial toe into the ballpark before you proceed with your alignment. Otherwise, you’ll be like a cat chasing its tail. You’ll adjust toe and camber will change. You’ll adjust camber and toe will change. With toe in the green range to start with you will eliminate many problems and improve your work flow.

An often-missed area of service on many vehicles is that of the frame-mounting bushings for stabilizer bars. When they squeak or make other noises, they get serviced. Prior to them reaching that point no one really inspects them. Look at this bar. You can’t see it in the photo, but the bar is tight on the back side of the bushing but has a considerable gap on the front side. This is with the weight of the vehicle on the tires or the vehicle sitting at its normal operating height. There is an issue here, even though the bar and bushing are not severely worn.
This is a General Motors asymmetrical lower control arm. In every other situation, such as this, where one control-arm bushing is further away than the other control-arm bushing from the lower ball joint, you have an asymmetrical control-arm bushing. The rule is that the bushing that is further away is controlling caster. The one that is more directly in line controls camber. For this reason, if you have a situation where you have a vehicle handling issue under hard braking, you should check the bushing on the part of control arm that is further away from the ball joint. This is another point that has been missed or not talked about very much anymore. It used to be of primary concern as a test question when I went to tech school and alignment school. It’s not anymore.
17
15 This is an older Asian car with a failed stabilizer-bar bushing. It’s actually a split bushing. You can see that the lower part is beginning to crawl or climb out of the holder. This allows a considerable amount of body movement before the stabilizer bar reacts, causing a lack of handling and control for the customer.

This is the old tried-and-true Chevrolet upper control arm with the “banana cams.” If you look at this control arm quickly while doing any type of vehicle work you may think that the parts are okay, but if you draw a line from the end of the bolt through the cam, through the bushing, through the control arm to the head of the bolt you can easily see that the control-arm assembly with the bushing has shifted upward considerably. In other words, the bolt is no longer in the center of the bushing and the center of the control arm. This is because of a failed bushing. Simply, this part needs to be replaced before any attempt at alignment is made. April 2020

This lifted Dodge truck was a real “problem child” I worked on for some time. The vehicle had an aftermarket lift kit on it that had been installed before the customer bought the vehicle. We put new struts on the front. We did this, we did that, we took the kit out, we reinstalled it and everything else, but nothing corrected the Ð- to 1-inch lean on the front end of the vehicle. Finally, another person came into the shop one day who had a considerable amount of Chrysler experience and asked, “Has anybody put rear springs in this vehicle?” The answer was, “Yes.” He asked to take a look. He looked at the two rear springs that had been purchased from a Chrysler dealership. Guess what? They both had the same part number. He looked at us and said, “You’ve got the wrong spring on the left rear.” “What do you mean? They’re both the same.” His reply: “No, no. Chrysler uses a different spring on the one side of the rear because of the weight of the fuel and the gas tank that is carried predominantly by that spring.” We corrected the spring situation on the rear and guess what? The 1-inch height difference on the front was gone and we could align the vehicle and have it ride correctly. How do you find out this stuff? How do you know this stuff? If not listed on any electronic information retrieval system, it is listed or posted on very, very few online areas of information. This tip alone, if you work on Dodge trucks and replace rear springs, may be worth the time it takes for you to read this article.
18
We’ve always been taught to look at vehicles and inspect them with the weight of the vehicle on the tires. This particular suspension system has a lower control-arm bushing that has failed at the 5 and 11 o’clock position. Near the 1 o’clock position it’s literally torn almost all the way through. When the lower control arm or vehicle is raised as shown, the lower control arm is hanging. This problem shows up. When the weight of the vehicle is on a drive-on lift or an alignment rack this bushing does not indicate any problem whatsoever. The moral of the story? Check vehicles hanging and check them with the weight of the vehicle on the tires. This particular vehicle had a noise problem during hard cornering. If we had only inspected it while on a driveon rack we might never have found this problem.
As noted in the introduction, hopefully this article has given you something to think about. Shops always seem to be rushed. It’s always a matter of hurry up and wait for parts, hurry up and wait for customers waiting, hurry up, hurry up, hurry up. The fact is that nobody tells a heart surgeon to hurry up while he’s doing his work. Nobody tells a dentist to hurry up while he’s drilling your teeth. Why is it that in our industry we are expected to be miracle workers and work under adverse conditions, yet please everybody except the person actually doing the work? Take your time. When you get a job ticket, read it. If possible, talk to the customer or the service adviser, step back, look at the vehicle and ask yourself what you’re going to do, why you’re going to do it and how you’re going to solve either the work task or the diagnostic problem at hand. You may find that your work environment and your overall level of compatibility with humanity improves. In other words, you’ll be less grumpy because things are going to go better for you. And don’t forget — mentor younger techs when you see an important issue. n

Here’s a side-by-side comparison of light output on high-beams of an HID lamp system (right) and a halogen filament lamp system (left). Notice the single HID lamp is also casting a beam pattern on the tree line on the driver’s side of the vehicle as well as fully illuminating the right-side shoulder and tree line. Overall output is much better, and with the full spectrum light output of the HID, the overall color temperature tends to more effectively illuminate road markers and roadside obstacles further down the road. This HID system is a 35-watt system compared to the 55-watt halogen bulb filament in the left headlamp.
Shedding Light on High-Intensity Discharge Lighting Much More Than Changing Headlamps By Dr. Alexander Richards
T
he theory behind high-Intensity-discharge (HID) lighting systems is older than some automotive professionals might think. In fact, the first idea for a metal-halide salt arc lamp was proposed by an English scientist and inventor, Francis Hauksbee, in 1705 (OSRAM, 2016). While our industry has largely moved toward high-efficiency LED technology, HIDs remain an increasingly affordable and relatively efficient option for increased service life, visible light output, and overall reliability in automotive headlamp applications when compared to halogen or incandescent options. There has been a substantial usage of HID headlights in modern automobiles. Neumann, Rainer, and Woerner (1993) cited a collaboration between Hella and Bosch available as an option on BMW’s 7 Series vehicles as one of the first 14
Aftermarket International
commercially available HID systems starting in the 1992 model year. Lincoln also produced an HID option in its 1996 Mark VIII that was available through the 1998 model year. In comparison to the substantial market, however; there has been relatively little service information produced to aid technicians in diagnosing these systems accurately when they fail. The goal of this article will be to summarize the theory, operation, and to investigate diagnostic techniques available to technicians beyond manufacturers recommendations. The intent is to educate shop owners and technicians about these systems, the dangers present when working with them, and hopefully inform through case-study analysis of the types and identification of failure modes within OEM and aftermarket HID systems. HID Headlights Description & Operational Theory HID headlamps produce light using a different means than Incandescent or LED technologies. Instead of a glowing filament (halogen/incandescent) or a light-emitting semiconductor (LED), HIDs produce visible light by generating and controlling an electric arc inside an atmosphere of inert gas. HID bulbs are constructed using a glass tube outer shell around an oval bulb capsule that contains a pair of tungsten electrodes positioned opposite of each other at each end of the bulb. In addition to the electrodes, a small quantity of halide salts with chemistry that varies depending on the desired color temperature output, is deposited inside the capsule, and the capsule is evacuated and refilled with xenon. Argon is typically used in non-automotive bulbs, but can Figure 2: An aftermarket H1-style HID bulb showing exhibit problematic characteristics for the outer glass, inner automotive applications such as longer capsule and electrodes. “warm-up” time when first started. HID bulbs require high voltages to initiate the arc, and often operate on AC current with voltages as high as 25kV in the “start” phase. Once the arc has been established, much like the secondary ignition circuit in an internal combustion engine, the voltages required are much lower, typically 42-100VAC. There are two discrete components that generate this voltage to drive the bulbs. These components are the ballast, and ignitor. In most aftermarket applications, the ballasts and igniters are two separate components, however many original equipment manufacturer (OEM) systems incorporate both of these devices into one module at or near the headlamp housings. There are also OEM systems that incorporate ignitors into the bulbs themselves to further consolidate the HV portion of the circuit. The ballast is essentially a DC-to-AC inverter and generates Figure 3
Here’s an ignitor module, attached to the rear-most portion of an HID bulb installed in a 2013 Ford Escape Titanium. This vehicle is equipped with either halogen bulbs, which typically cost about $30 to $60 (United States dollars) per pair, whereas the HID replacement bulb/ignitor assembly replaces the two most likely components to fail in the system and are about $134 (United States dollars) per bulb. The two bulbs are not interchangeable but the HID bulbs and ignitors typically last about 10 to 15 times as long as their halogen equivalents. This is known as a D3S-style bulb/ignitor.

Here’s an operational diagram of an HID system. The 12-18V input is typically switched by a Body Control Module or CAN/ LIN bus messages transmitted to the Headlight control module depending on the application.

an AC signal that is sent to the igniter. The igniters are nothing more than a filtered step-up transformer that boosts the ballast output to the required voltage to initiate and hold a stable arc inside the bulbs. (Figure 4) Most ballasts are an auto feedback type and will transition from startup and bulb overdrive (warm-up) modes to normal operation quickly and are generally reliable at producing full output within 3-5 seconds of first establishing an arc. (Figure 5)
Common Failures/Serviceability of HID Systems There are some additional considerations to make when working with HID headlight systems and attempting diagnosis of them. Typically, bulb life for HID systems is roughly six to eight times that of conventional incandescent bulbs. Failure of the lamps typically results in flickering or inconsistent and diminished light output. This is indicative of the tungsten electrodes wearing over time and the resulting electrode material contaminating the halide salts inside the capsule making the start phase difficult. Diagnosis of this condition will be covered later in this article, but typically this results in a much higher starting voltage (that may be outside the operational range of the ballast and igniter) than typically is seen with serviceable bulbs. Additionally, it is worthy to note that bulbs should always be replaced in pairs (as is common with incandescent-type bulbs) as the wearing of electrodes and contamination of the halide salts will cause slight color output variations and total luminosity to drop over their lifespan. As mentioned, many versions of OEM application HID systems incorporate the igniter and bulb into a single unit, making igniter serviceability as an individual component in OE applications impossible (Figure 6). Other malfunctions in the ballast or headlight control modules will vary depending aftermarketinternational.com

Wiring Repair & Necessary Tooling Given the nature of much of the HV wiring in HID systems, unless failures are related to the DC (pre-ballast) side of the HID 16

system, most wiring repairs like terminal or conductor replacement are discouraged by manufacturers. Many Ballast and igniter units are integrated this way to deter technicians, salvage yards or thirdparty parts remanufacturers from repairing damaged wiring or replacing many of the HV connectors. Replacement of those areas of HID systems is highly discouraged as unwanted interference, loss of isolation from chassis ground, and even the danger of electrical shock is all a possibility when they are repaired incorrectly. Tooling required for diagnosis of HID systems isn’t overtly specialized, although voltage measurements of the HV side given start-up voltage levels is discouraged without the use of specialty equipment or add-ons such as differential scope probes. All of the waveforms in the diagnosis section of this article were captured with a PicoScope 4425 4 Channel lab scope using metri-pack “squid” breakout terminals and a low-amperage amp-clamp. Additionally, AC amperage was obtained using a 500A Fluke i400 AC amperage clamp for some of the ballast and bulb output waveforms.
Diagnosis Most HID systems do not function much differently from more conventional 12VDC headlamp circuits. On more modern vehicles, many headlamps are now controlled using an integrated headlamp control unit via CAN or LIN network communication. This communication occurs typically between the headlamp modules and a body control module. Regardless, for HID systems, diagnosis of the 12V side of the HID circuit (pre-ballast) is often the same as many other more conventional lighting systems. Symptoms to watch for that could indicate failures of the 12V systems: • No operation of one or both headlamps • Headlamp/lighting malfunction indicator • Stored DTC’s in BCM or headlamp modules • Communication faults between the BCM and or headlamp modules For these symptoms, 12V diagnosis should take precedence to HV diagnostics and should include a thorough inspection and diagnostic procedure to verify that power, ground, and network communication is all present at the headlamp modules and other related components before proceeding. While failures of the ballasts and other components could still ultimately be the culprit, the amperage required for start-up sequences in HID bulbs is such that the integrity of 12V power and ground wires that feed the ballast is vital to proper operation. Any high resistance or voltage drop in these circuits could cause erratic or no operation of the HID system. Any potential voltage drop or high resistance failures in this side of the circuit is likely to be noted during the high-output startup phase, when the ballasts can pull up to 20A momentarily to produce the required voltage on the HV side in the ignitors. As you’ll see in some of the waveforms, this phase is typically short lived and does not often last long. Because of the high-amperage requirements of HID systems on startup and momentary warm-up periods when the bulbs are cold, diagnosis of the 12V supply and ground wiring should be of utmost concern. Loaded voltage drop measurements using a MIN/ MAX function of a DVOM or a scope should be utilized here as the April 2020

Figure 10
Startup amperage captured on the PicoScope shows the startup amperage requirements (18A) of this OEM ballast tapering off into the “warm-up” phase, before current drops to the normal operation level near the end of the capture (1.5A). The time-base capture here is 5s/ div and the start phase of operation is seen starting around the 3.5 second mark, ending at the 5 second mark before transitioning to the overdriven warm-up phase.
Figure 11
AC with each wire providing inverted polarity from the H-bridge circuit inside the ballast. Many ballasts will detect circuit issues or ignitor failures before generating this output, so if the output isn’t present when the ballast is powered on, the failure is likely in the ballast, ignitor, or bulb circuits. Testing should then proceed with a known good bulb or ignitor (if only one side is inoperable) or by verifying ballast current draw when powered on (Figure 12). Also, consideration should be reserved for ignitor and bulb serviceability. The primary concern is bulb wear over time, so the age and quality of the bulbs present in any HID system should be considered if flickering, or intermittent starting issues are present. Bulbs in HID systems also should be replaced in pairs, as a slight discoloration of the light output over the bulbs lifetime does result from wear and contamination of the halide salts in the bulb capsule. In conclusion, HID headlamps are not a new technology, but they are easily diagnosed using basic tools if you are familiar with AC current circuits and their diagnosis. In addition, many failures can be isolated to the conventional 12V circuit, which is known for common failures whether the system is a halogen, LED or HID system. For the purposes of simplicity, I have included a diagnostic chart (Figure 13) for shop use that outlines most of the diagnostic steps toward isolating failures in these systems. n Figure 13
Ballast output voltage is shown in blue and green traces near the top. This AC square-wave current is generated by the H-Bridge circuit in the ballast. Note that the two channels are out of phase with each other. The amperage waveform at the bottom is ballast input amperage and is a product of the digital switch-mode power supply circuit on the input side of the ballast. This PWM circuit will respond by varying pulse-width depending on the load the igniter and bulb place on the output circuit.
Figure 12
With ballast input amperage reading about -0.7A, we can conclude that this ballast is powered up, and is making the decision to not ignite the bulb or provide output to the igniter because it has determined the igniter has failed. We also noted that in this capture, the amperage clamp is backwards resulting in the negative amperage reading.
amperage involved in starting an HID system diminishes quickly once the arc is established. This can help a technician in catching intermittent or cold weather-related starting or flickering issues. Once the 12V side of the circuits involved is verified as operational, HV diagnosis should proceed with checking for ballast output. As shown in Figure 11, ballast output is square wave Aftermarket International

Russia’s biggest automaker AvtoVAZ said on Monday it would buy out General Motors from their joint venture producing vehicles in Russia under the Chevrolet brand, effectively ending GM’s presence in car assembling in the country. Russia’s car market was among Europe’s top performers before the imposition of western sanctions in 2014 which, coupled with falling oil prices, sharply weakened the ruble, increased the cost of buying a car and curbed Russians’ ability to buy new vehicles. As a result, foreign automakers started to rethink their strategies of doing business in Russia. On Monday, AvtoVAZ signed an agreement to buy GM’s 50 percent stake in the venture, which sees the two companies produce the Chevrolet Niva from a factory in Togliatti, a city on the Volga river. AvtoVAZ did not disclose financial details of the deal which would end GM’s presence in the car assembling business in Russia. According to the agreement, the factory will continue producing and selling cars under the Chevrolet brand for “a certain period of time” before switching to Russia’s Lada brand. Built in 2001, the Togliatti factory has the capacity to make up to 100,000 cars a year and produces the Chevrolet Niva, whose design was based on the Soviet-era Niva by AvtoVAZ engineers and developed further with GM’s input. Russia’s automobile market has struggled in 2019, with sales of new cars in November falling by 6.4 percent year-on-year, the Association of European Businesses said last Thursday.

Kim Woo-choong, Founder of S. Korea’s Daewoo Group, Dies The founder of the defunct Daewoo Group, Kim Woochoong, has died after watching the conglomerate he built into a symbol of South Korea’s manufacturing prowess become one of its biggest corporate failures, crushed by debt. Kim, who died on Monday at 83 after battling chronic illness, had led what was once the nation’s second-largest conglomerate, symbolizing South Korea’s meteoric rise from the ashes of the 1950-1953 Korean War. “We have never forgotten his expansive vision that if we get out of this small land, there is hope in the world,” said Huh Chang-soo, chairman of conglomerate GS Group and the head of a lobby group, the Federation of Korean Industries. But Kim leaves a mixed legacy that underscores the activities of the conglomerates, or chaebols, dominating the economy, said Park Sang-in, a specialist in corporate governance at Seoul National University. “The late Kim epitomizes the good and bad sides of South Korean chaebols,” said Park. The country’s conglomerates grew through cozy relationships with authoritarian governments, focused on growth over profitability, and made excessive investments that resulted in the Asian financial crisis, he added. Kim began as a fabric salesman who invested about $5,000 in a textiles company to start Daewoo in 1967. Pouring enormous energy and exploiting close ties to South Korea’s leaders, he parlayed it into a behemoth that employed more than 300,000 people in 110 countries at its peak, with interests ranging from automobiles to construction, shipbuilding, trading and securities. In 1989, Kim published a book that galvanized a new generation of South Koreans with bright dreams for the future. Titled “The World is Wide and There is a Lot to Do,” its English version was called “Every Street is Paved With Gold.”
But Kim’s aggressive leveraged expansion, which swelled the group to 41 affiliate companies, helped push South Korea to the brink of national default in the late 1990s. Once admired as a hero, Kim fled South Korea in 1999 when Daewoo collapsed with debts of more than $75 billion, forcing the government to step in and take control, leaving taxpayers holding the bag. Daewoo Motor, part of Daewoo Group, was acquired by General Motors in the early 2000s. In 2005 Kim returned home from years in exile, only to be arrested and sentenced to 10 years in jail for embezzlement and fraud for covering up the debt.

[INDUSTRYNEWS] ALL AROUND THE AFTERMARKET INDUSTRY
A New Format For Autopromotec 2021 Autopromotec gets smarter and renews its format. To meet the needs of exhibitors and visitors, for the 29th edition scheduled for 2021 the organisers of the biennial international automotive aftermarket trade show have decided to introduce a series of changes regarding the duration of the event – going from 5 to 4 days, from Wednesday to Saturday – and the content of meetings and conferences during the fair. The decision to change the format after so many years came after a survey conducted among exhibitors and visitors who participated in recent editions. In fact, for the overwhelming majority of respondents limiting the number of days to four would make it possible to intensify business meetings and at the same time optimise companies’ resources and investments. As for content, more than half of the respondents identified the development of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, big data and nanotechnology as the trends on which the future of the automotive sector and its supply chain will be played out.
AFTERMARKET I N T E R N AT I O N A L
“A trade show is not just numbers but also comments and opinions of those who participate”, explained Renzo Servadei, CEO of Autopromotec. That is why we decided to contact exhibitors and visitors to gather suggestions for improvements in content and format for the next edition. The technological revolution we are witnessing in our sector is driving us to change, and at Autopromotec we must be the first to adapt. To paraphrase a great scientist: It is not the strongest species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change”. So, see you May 26-29, 2021. Trade show numbers The 28th edition of Autopromotec saw a strong growth in its numbers. In fact, 1,676 companies chose the event as a showcase to present their products and services – often for the first time – an increase of 4.4% in the number of participating companies compared to the previous edition in 2017. Of these, the share of foreign companies present was 43%, for a total of 53 countries represented.
