Do We Need AAPEX Every Year? Part 2

New Products for Aftermarket Executives

A

s the pandemic is (hopefully) winding down, I thought I’d use this column to revisit my previous comments regarding AAPEX in the future. Readers might recall I suggested what has been talked about but never have I seen, in print or online. My comment was AAPEX ought to become an every other year event, on the opposite years of Automechanika Frankfurt. Since the Frankfurt show has moved to an odd-numbered years, starting this year, that would mean AAPEX be held on the even-numbered years. I have owned Aftermarket International since 2007 and never have I received such a reaction.. In summary, more than 90% of those who contacted me were in agreement! These were exhibitors who incur the cost of an annual AAPEX. Those costs of course are reflected down the line to the end user, the vehicle owners. Here are just 10 of them. Some are short, others long, but I tried to select those that gave varied views and reasons. Space limitations require I limit the number we can publish. Some are very blunt, others a bit more reserved. I have only included the respondents’ initials.

“Its ALL about the money and lots of it. We, (company name), would like to see an every other year format but doubt that will happen. TT

Thanks For Your Thoughts.” “You have put in print exactly what we all think. It is a cycle of fear. The only winners in an annual show are the trade associations. However, they fear not just the loss of revenue but also that Automechanika will move in to the USA with a competing event the opposite year. Many suppliers have told me that

they don’t see the real business value in a yearly show but are afraid to skip for all the reasons you mentioned and the constant threat of loss of seniority that would lead to poor booth placement.” “We are constantly told that there is no room for waste in our supply chains but BC

the logic has not historically applied to the shows. Maybe it will change now.”

Where Innovation Lives

MARK ON CARD NO. 691

Comments from the Editors Electric Versus Internal Combustion How will it affect you? As United States President Joe Biden starts a new era in government, the environment and climate change appear to be some of his most-urgent policy-making agendas, only second to fighting the Covid virus. As lines are being drawn politically on these actions, it appears that General Motors surprised its competitors recently when its CEO Mary Barra announced that GM would be phasing out nearly all of its gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles by 2035. One wonders if her move is politically motivated with the recent election results, or in fact, that she sees the writing on the wall, that after more than a hundred years, the technology is now available to make a change for the better. The fact that Tesla has made a profit on its car sales throughout the past five quarters also may have played a major role in her decision making. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Fiat/Chrysler (now agreeing to merge with Peugeot) is continuing its strategy to promote its line of performance gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles. For example, the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is now available with a 6.2-liter high-output supercharged gasoline-powered Hemi V8 with 797 horsepower. Some RAM pickups are available with 50-gallon fuel tanks to accommodate a greater travel range between fill-ups. The company makes no mention of hybrids or electric in its advertisements. It’s our guess that GM will lead the pack in the electric venture and that Ford will follow, ramping up its own electric plans. While the Chrysler side may stick with its performance bent, it’s likely that the Fiat/ Peugeot side of the merger will become the brands to promote electric. European and Asian carmakers will be strong players in the game. Only the future will tell us for sure what eventually will happen. The major question is: “What will happen to the independent aftermarket side of the repair network?” Many fear that this somewhat-rapid change in automotive design will be the end of the independent garage as we know it today. Too be honest, we’ve seen these types of advancements and fears ever since the first mass-produced car, the Curved Dash Oldsmobile, rolled off the assembly line in 1901. By then, blacksmith shops in metropolitan areas were finding that farrier jobs were declining. Those who embraced the future found that with a little knowledge, they could make many of the horseless-carriage repairs and, in time, adapt to a new line of work. Gloom and doom predictions have been a part of the aftermarket ever since. We saw it when regular oil changes expanded from every 500 miles in the 1950s to today with some manufacturers suggesting oil changes at 10,000-mile or more intervals. By the late-1970s, repair outlets cursed the catalytic converter and made profits by removing them. A decade or more later, the profit picture and technical expertise changed so much that catalyst replacement became a major profit center for shops. Over the years, advancements such, as antilock brakes, fuel injection and electronic traction control have all caused their share of fear and frustration. This isn’t to say that all will survive the ongoing transitions of the modern automobile. Throughout the decades the number of small, privately owned shops have decreased while the number of larger multi-bay and multiple-shop locations have succeeded. Smaller shops normally went by the wayside because their owners refused to get the necessary training required to stay ahead and/or their limited size made it impossible for them to afford the necessary diagnostic tools required to stay in the game. As these advancements continue to unfold, we encourage everyone to take part in as much training as possible. With Covid vaccinations becoming more available, trade shows will return throughout the world and will hold technical seminars covering the most important diagnostic and repair topics. Meanwhile, other industry experts will be able to assist you with online training and videos. Don’t look at them as an added expense to your business operation, but rather, as an investment in the future — just like you would when installing an advanced wheel-alignment system or buying new scan tool. Don’t be left behind!

Today’s Wheel Speed Sensors By Taylor Wolff

W

heel-speed sensors have changed over the years and so have diagnostic aids. While oscilloscopes are great diagnostic tools, it is no longer common to see technicians wheel them out to diagnose wheel-speed-sensor issues on newer vehicles. The most common type of wheel-speed sensor seen today are magneto resistive. These sensors are also referred to as active wheel-speed sensors because they require power to operate. The sensor works by detecting changes in magnetic field from the toothed ring, commonly on the wheel hub, with a semiconductor and a magnetic resistive element inside of the sensor. When the wheel is spinning it causes the multipole rotor ring to generate an alternating magnetic field, which in turn causes the sensor to switch its output on and off, creating a signal that is used by the antilock braking module. I used a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado to demonstrate a wheel-speedsensor concern. I removed the rear sensor and contaminated it with metal shavings. This is not an uncommon issue to see in the field because of the environment of the sensor. They are prone to collecting brake dust and metal shavings as wheel bearings wear. The metal shavings interfere with the magnetic field that interrupts the sensors ability to accurately detect it. The truck responded immediately with several warning messages and indicators on the dashboard display. Next, I used the General Motors factory scan

tool, GDS2, to view the sensor data. I compared the input of the left-rear sensor (the bugged sensor) to the right-rear sensor. As shown in the graphs, where the right wheel-speed sensor is functioning normally, the left sensor signal shows little fluctuation

and mostly gives no signal at all. This illustrates that diagnosing most modern wheel-speed-sensor concerns can be as simple as a visual component and wiring check coupled with the use of the factory scan-tool equipment. n

The Importance of DEF By Nathan Diazleal

T

he ingredients for proper diesel combustion are fuel, heat and oxygen. Our atmosphere is not pure oxygen, so engines use air instead of oxygen, which air is composed of about 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, and 1% other gases. In a perfect engine, air and fuel come in, and water, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and other gases come out, but that does not happen. Instead, the engine produces water, carbon dioxide, pollutants and NOx. Oxides of Nitrogen or NOx is a toxic gas that reduces air quality, causes health problems, smog, and acid rain. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created regulations that forced engine manufacturers to lower their NOx production. Many other countries are doing the same. The current On-Highway EPA Emissions Standard, which is one of many EPA standards, is 0.2 grams per horsepower hour. In general, nitrogen has strong bonds, but they break under high temperatures and high pressures. Diesel engines run at higher combustion temperatures and pressures, so they create large amounts of NOx. Diesel engines must have an aftertreatment system that follows the On-Highway EPA Emissions Standard or goes lower. Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is one of the most important aftertreatment components combating NOx and maintaining that EPA standard. DEF Construction DEF contains urea which has the ingredients for ammonia, and ammonia helps in breaking down NOx. Urea is sensitive to heat, so it will break down into ammonia and carbon dioxide quickly, which is troublesome. Ammonia is crucial for reducing NOx, so it is wasteful if the ammonia breaks down early. To prevent premature breakdown or solidification of urea

at room temperature, DEF contains deionized water, which the deionized water can be thought of as a carrier for urea that carries ammonia. Figure 1 shows a gallon of Peak Blue DEF. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the American Petroleum Institute (API) require DEF to be 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water because it lowers the freezing point of DEF to 12° Fahrenheit (-11° Celsius) and provides the best amount of ammonia for breaking down NOx. Overall, DEF is nontoxic, nonflammable, and stable, but DEF is corrosive to some metals like copper and brass. DEF Operation Diesel engines create large amounts of NOx and other pollutants, so like gasoline engines, the dirty exhaust is filtered or converted into mostly nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water. Instead of using a catalytic converter, diesel engines have a system of catalysts called the aftertreatment system. Figure 2 contains an example of a complete aftertreatment system. In Figure 2, the right most component contains the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and the diesel particulate filter (DPF). The middle component is the decomposition reactor. The right component contains the selective reduction catalyst (SCR), the ammonia slip catalyst (ASC), and the tail pipe. Once NOx enters the aftertreatment system, it passes the DOC and DPF. NOx enters the decomposition reactor where DEF is injected into the hot exhaust by a DEF dosing valve, and it is vaporized by the hot exhaust. The bottom of a DEF dosing valve is shown in Figure 3. DEF and NOx hit a plate inside the decomposition reactor that thoroughly mixes them. With the help of ammonia from the DEF, the SCR reduces the NOx to

nitrogen and water. Some unused ammonia passes the SCR. Ammonia is a hazardous and deadly pollutant. To eliminate ammonia, the ASC oxidizes the ammonia and turns it into nitrogen and water. Then, clean exhaust exits the tail pipe.

up to two years if stored under 75° Fahrenheit (28° Celsius). If DEF is exposed to temperatures below 12° Fahrenheit (-11° Celsius), DEF will freeze and expand to about 7% of its normal size, so it is important to store DEF properly. In freezing temperatures, filling up the DEF tank to the correct level can prevent it from cracking. If some DEF freezes, the DEF system does have a heating system that can thaw out the frozen DEF inside the pipes and the DEF tank, so adding anti-gelling additives are not necessary and will contaminate and damage the DEF system. Thawed-out DEF will continue to operate normally since DEF does not lose its effective properties when it thaws out. The DEF tank has a blue cap and a smaller port to distinguish between the DEF tank and diesel tank, which is shown in Figure 4. Some manufacturers attempted to distance the diesel tank and DEF tank to prevent contamination, but diesel may still accidentally be put in the DEF tank. Mixing diesel and DEF reduces DEF’s effectiveness immediately, and it may cause major damage to the DEF system. Contaminated DEF can clog the DEF filter, breakdown seals or cause premature wear that can cause improper DEF delivery or dosing valve operation. Electrical wiring can be damaged and ruined if exposed to DEF since DEF has some corrosive properties towards copper and brass. Figure 5 shows crystalized DEF. The DEF system does have a DEF-quality sensor that can help alert the driver when the DEF quality lowers. Contaminated DEF, improper DEF level or damage to the DEF system will force engines and vehicles to operate in a limited mode because then the engine could spill out emissions at an unknown rate, breaking the EPA standard. Regular maintenance of the DEF filter and proper DEF care can help prevent expensive damages. n

DEF Maintenance DEF must be maintained and properly stored to allow for proper DEF dosing operation and NOx reduction. DEF is consumed about 2% of fuel consumption, so it lasts longer than diesel. On average, DEF is under $20 U.S. currency, so purchasing DEF about every oil change is worth it. When purchasing DEF and storing DEF, it is important to know the storage conditions of DEF, since changes in temperatures can affect the DEF’s effectiveness. DEF is sensitive to heat, so it should be stored in a cool, dry place. In direct sunlight, urea may begin to heat up, react with the deionized water, and produce ammonia, which can change the DEF mixture, raise NOx production or make DEF useless. DEF will not break down immediately, but the shelf life will decrease over time. Normally, DEF has a shelf life of one year if stored between 10° to 90° Fahrenheit (-12° to 32° Celsius). DEF can possibly last

Figure 4 The DEF tank has a blue cap and a smaller port to distinguish between the DEF tank and diesel tank.

Daimler Truck Spin Off Daimler plans to spin off Daimler Truck as a separate business and establish two independent pure-play companies, eventually renaming the car part of the business as Mercedes-Benz. The Germanybased company said this “fundamental change in its structure” is “designed to unlock the full potential of its businesses in a zero-emissions, software-driven future.” In a Feb. 3 news release, the company said Mercedes-Benz “will be the world’s pre-eminent luxury car business, committed to leading in electric drive and car software,” while “Daimler Truck will accelerate its path towards zero emissions as the world’s largest truck and bus producer and technology leader.” “Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans and Daimler Trucks & Buses are different businesses, with specific customer groups, technology paths and capital needs,” said Ola Källenius, chairman of the board of management of Daimler and Mercedes-Benz, in the release. “Mercedes-Benz is the world’s most valuable luxury car brand, offering the most desirable cars to discerning customers. Daimler Truck supplies industry leading transportation solutions and services to customers. Both companies operate in industries that are facing major technological and structural changes. Given this context, we believe they will be able to operate most effectively as independent entities, equipped with strong net liquidity and free from the constraints of a conglomerate structure.” The Daimler Truck business will have fully independent management and stand-alone corporate governance, including an independent chairman of the supervisory board. The separate listing of Daimler Truck in Frankfurt planned for year-end 2021. Mercedes-Benz and Daimler Truck will each be supported by dedicated captive financial and mobility service entities. The company plans to assign resources and teams from today’s Daimler Mobility to both Mercedes-Benz and Daimler Truck. The company just two years ago did a different restructuring, splitting it activities into three legally independent entities -- one new company to focus on its car and van business and a second on its truck and bus business. The third was Daimler Financial Services AG, which was renamed Daimler Mobility in that restructuring and handled both car and truck business.

Focusing on Electric, Autonomous Trucks The new Daimler Truck will accelerate the execution of its strategic plans, according to the announcement, driving forward with its development of emissions-free technologies for trucks and buses. “This is a pivotal moment for Daimler Truck. With independence comes greater opportunity, greater visibility and transparency,” said Martin Daum, member of the board of management of Daimler and chairman of the board of management of Daimler Truck. “We have already defined the future of our business with battery-electric and fuel-cell trucks, as well as strong positions in autonomous driving. With targeted partnerships we will accelerate the development of key technologies to bring best-inclass products to our customers rapidly.” Daimler Truck is the world’s largest truck and bus producer, with industry-leading positions in Europe, North America and Asia, according to the company, and more than 35 main locations around the globe. With more than 100,000 employees, it unites seven brands under one roof: BharatBenz, Freightliner, Fuso, Mercedes-Benz, Setra, Thomas Built Buses and Western Star. In 2019, a total of around half a million trucks and buses were delivered to customers. Daimler will set up an innovation fund with 1.5 billion euros for Daimler Truck in addition to current financial plans. “We are convinced that the capital markets will appreciate the opportunity to invest in more clearly focused, pure-play businesses,” said Manfred Bischoff, chairman of the supervisory board of Daimler. Michael Brecht, chairman of Daimler’s General Works Council, explained, “The transformation of our industry is moving ahead quickly. In order for us to keep pace, we need to invest in innovations boldly and more quickly.” The final decision on the spin-off has to be made by an extra-ordinary shareholder meeting of Daimler, which is planned to take place in the third quarter.

APRA Europe strengthens the Voice of Remanufacturing through a merger with FIRM APRA Europe, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association Europe, and FIRM, the International Federation of Engine Remanufacturers, announce their merger which came into effect January 1, 2021. By making this step they are now representing a vast majority of the European remanufacturing market and represent more than 1.000 companies. APRA and FIRM share a long tradition in the automotive aftermarket and follow very similar purposes and activities. Both associations represent the interests of the parts remanufacturing industry in Europe. While FIRM acts as an umbrella organization of national engine remanufacturing associations and companies and therefore has a clear focus on the engine business, APRA members can be any private or legal entity related to the general remanufacturing business and field of science. Because of a very successful and close cooperation for many years, APRA Europe and FIRM are now joining forces. By making this step, the associations will be able to offer a higher quality of services to all members and represent a larger share in the market and therefore have a stronger voice towards stakeholders and decision makers. Together, APRA Europe and FIRM members represent a market volume of more than 1,5 billion EUR with 25.000 employees in Europe. This is equivalent to about two thirds of the European remanufacturing industry. APRA Europe Chairman Dr. Koehler said, “I am more than happy that we could realize this merger which was overdue. With this combined broad member base, representing the vast majority of the European remanufacturing branch, we are now able to pave the way for still better recognition of our businesses. Saudi Market Showing Growth, Opportunities Part Sales and Vehicle Park on the Rise, New Trade Show Aims to Continue the Country’s Growth By Richard Mezadurian

P

icture the Saudi Arabian landscapes, and it is easy to see rolling sand dunes and little else. However, the Kingdom is home to some of the greatest natural wonders of the world. Among these treasures is the Al Ahsa Oasis, where 1.5 million palm trees grow naturally on a 30,000-acre plot that’s fed by aquifers. Or perhaps you’d be captivated by the verdant landscapes of Jabal Sawya, Saudi Arabia’s highest peak, standing just shy of 10,000 feet. And there are few places as awe inspiring as “The Edge of World,” a rocky escarpment outside Riyadh where you can see clear to the horizon. But getting to these places could be a real challenge if your vehicle isn’t properly equipped to deal with the desert sun and the arid climate. Fortunately, most motorists in the Kingdom have access to a vibrant and comprehensive auto parts aftermarket that can see to their needs. The Saudi Arabian vehicle park is growing rapidly. In a 2019 article, the Arab News estimated over 8 million passenger vehicles on the road, but that statistic likely includes light trucks that may be used for commercial purposes. It is clear, however, that Asian brands are the dominant players in this market, capturing 8 out of the top 10 spots. Chevrolet and Ford were the only non-Asian brands in the top 10. In the aggregate, Asian brands comprised 81.6 of sales in 2018, compared to 13.9 percent for American brands and 4.5 percent for Europeans brands. Toyota was once again the market leader, capturing 31.6 percent. Still holding on the second spot at 18.6 percent was Hyundai. Hyundai sales have softened slightly since peaking at 23.9 percent in 2017. There were just 411,000 cars sold in 2018, and the top sellers were the Toyota Camry (130,490 units) and the Toyota Hilux (76,375 units). New vehicle sales are expected to increase over the next several years as prohibitions on women driving are being relaxed or removed completely. The vehicle park was expected to increase by a compound annual growth rate of 4 percent between now and 2023, but allowing women to drive has changed that calculus. The updated forecast is for vehicle sales to drive growth by an 8 percent CAGR. In terms of aftermarket parts sales, the market is expecting to reach $3.65 billion by 2020. The three segments expected to benefit most from these changes are periodic maintenance,

collision and body repair, and mechanical repairs. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia does manufacture a small amount of parts that are used mostly for local market consumption. To encourage more manufacturing and provide jobs in the future for a growing youth population, the government established the Saudi Arabia Standards Organization (SASO). The burdens of meeting SASO’s many import regulations are designed to induce foreign producers to transfer technology and skills training to the local market. An added benefit to local consumers, of course, is higher quality auto parts being sold throughout the country. The U.S. government considers the SASO requirements a significant barrier to trade, but the stepped-up inspections have also helped curb counterfeit parts proliferation and violations of intellectual property rights, which many manufacturers welcome. While the market is large and lucrative, U.S. manufacturers have not been able to take full advantage of the market opportunity in Saudi Arabia. The figures bear this out. According to U.S. International Trade Commission figures (USITC), the U.S. showed a 3 percent rise in auto parts exports in 2018, hitting $92 million. However, that is still well off the peak, which in 2016 was just shy of $147 million. Automotive parts and accessories are a small part of the trading relationship we have with the Kingdom, and that trade has been declining since the 2015 peak of $19.8 billion. In 2018, it was off 31.6 percent to $13.6 billion. So relatively speaking, automotive parts has outperformed other areas of bilateral trade with Saudi Arabia. As part of its focus on growing industries, the government of Saudi Arabia sanctioned a major automotive exhibition in Riyadh later this fall. The Riyadh Motor Show took place Nov. 21-26, 2019 at the Riyadh International Exhibition Center. It will feature hundreds of vehicles on display, pavilions sponsored by carmakers and vendor booths, all of whom are hoping to capture some of the lucrative market in the Kingdom. For many exhibitors, it will be their first exposure to the Saudi market, but for some, it will mark what they hope to be a triumphant return. Manufacturers who are seeking an edge in the Saudi market could follow in the footsteps of one exhibitor. For years T-Rex Truck

Products, based in Corona, Calif., had enjoyed a favorable sales environment in the Kingdom and throughout the Middle East. That had changed over the past decade as inferior quality, lower cost goods from China flooded the Middle East. Ben Mizban, the founder and CEO of T-Rex, says that while they manufacture over 2,000 application-specific parts, it’s really their innovation and ingenuity that brings the customers back. He says, “There are thousands of companies in the U.S. and the rest of the world that sell off road LED lights, but none had addressed the mounting solutions for them. We applied high quality engineering and design to provide specific applications for all trucks and Jeeps in the market” by integrating the LED lights into T-Rex products. Mizban feels that their Zroadz brand of products will help him reintroduce the company to the Saudi market. Performance products are also becoming very popular in Saudi Arabia, as a younger generation adopts the “tuner’ culture. COMP Cams, based in Memphis, competes in the performance powertrain segment. As part of the COMP Performance Group, which include brands like TCI Automotive, FAST (Fuel Air Spark Technology), RHS (Racing Head Service), ZEX Nitrous and Powerhouse Tools, COMP Cams is currently engaged in the Kingdom by going through distributors in neighboring countries, most notably the UAE. Chris Douglas, the COO of COMP Cams says, “We feel it is vitally important to explore and develop new markets for the longevity of not only our company but the overall industry.” He feels that participating in the Riyadh Motor Show is more than just a business opportunity. He goes on, “We are frequent participants in the SEMA

business development trips and feel it is our responsibility as good stewards of the industry/hobby.” Like most markets outside the U.S., the aftermarket in Saudi Arabia is set up mostly as a three-step distribution model. Typically, parts are imported by the distributor, sold to a jobber/retailer, who in turn sells to the installer. There are no national or big-box automotive retailers in the Kingdom, as the do-it-yourself (DIY) trade is a very small segment of the market. Rather, in Saudi Arabia, do it- for-me (DIFM) is how most consumers get their vehicle’s maintenance and repairs taken care of. Most cities in the Kingdom have neighborhoods that specifically cater to the automotive trade. In these areas, you will find parts stores interspersed between repair shops and body shops. A favorable combination of factors makes Saudi Arabia an ideal export market for U.S. manufacturers. The relative strength of U.S. vehicles in the market, combined with a growing youth automotive enthusiast movement spells opportunity. The popularity of Tafheet and Hajwalah, which are terms used to describe drifting and street racing in the Middle East, can be witnessed by their ubiquity on most social media platforms. If you’re skimming Instagram to find “Sidewall Skiing” (a term for driving while balanced on two wheels), or if you’re checking in on YouTube to find videos of the many 4x4 clubs frolicking about the desert, it’s very clear that Saudi Arabia has a vibrant and growing car culture. Checking in on the Riyadh Motor Show might be the best way to get a firsthand look at this dynamic market. But if you do decide to visit, don’t forget to bring the sunscreen! n

Automechanika Shanghai 2020 introduces new digital platform

A

utomechanika Shanghai was one of the few large-scale automotive trade shows held in 2020. Buyers around the world are relying on the fair to inform their next purchasing decisions, capture the latest market information and find the latest solutions that have come into fruition as a response to COVID-19. These business needs will make the final exhibition on the circuit even more valuable for next year’s industry development. With this in mind, the show is radically transforming its web-based tools to meet market demand, so that it not only takes place onsite, but also simultaneously in a virtual setting. Its latest innovation, AMS Live, aims to unlock imperative knowledge-based sharing and collaborative opportunities along the supply chain that empower remote participants to become a part of the show. Ms Fiona Chiew, Deputy General Manager, Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, commented: “By creating a digitally hybrid event, AMS Live is a lifeline for overseas visitors who cannot physically attend the show. Exhibitors at the exhibition ground can still take advantage of in-person interactions, as well as engage with global stakeholders online, whether it be for business exchange, marketing, trade or education. After all, it is the synergy of auto players that allows businesses, as well as the fair itself to thrive.” Networking opportunities utilising live chats, video calls and more New and long-time buyers tuning in electronically can network and connect in real-time with exhibitors through one-to-one online meetings, business matchmaking, chat rooms, live comments during streamed programmes and more. These functions allow buyers to discuss and learn about potential suppliers. Create enquiries to match with the right exhibitors When buyers launch product or service queries, the platform will automatically match potential suppliers. Interested exhibitors can start a conversation to discuss further business opportunities. Get involved with live streamed onsite activities Whether there are conferences, in-depth interviews with industry leaders, live demonstrations or performances, online participants can engage with onsite activities through the three live channels:

24

1. Auto Discovery Channel presenting key conferences and training sessions; 2. Interactive and Entertainment Channel where online participants can partake in onsite interviews and tours, as well as watch the Motorsport & High Performance Event and other entertainment; and, 3. Exhibitor Live Channel featuring a collection of exhibitor events ranging from product presentations, pitches, launches and more. Tools to help plan a physical and virtual visit efficiently AMS Live allows users to re-watch conferences on-demand, along with record noteworthy products and exhibitors for future reference. On top of this, the personal online calendar can help manage meetings and has a built-in notification function for appointments. To this degree, the fundamental idea to offer a platform like AMS Live is to replicate these curial face-to-face interactions and onsite exchanges by utilising digital services while the market continues to bounce back. The interactive nature of this newly coined hybrid event will therefore continue to unite overseas participants and exhibition goers along the supply chain, in addition to industry associations, government bodies, media and research institutes across every corner of the automotive ecosystem. Automechanika Shanghai will become one of the first exhibitions in the brand’s portfolio to present this type of digital stage, and feeds to its long term roadmap of delivering and developing a sustainable event. It is also in response to the heightened demand for the more online exhibition services that add value to overall event experience. Mindful of the COVID-19 outbreak, organisers are also working with local authorities to ensure appropriate safety parameters are upheld. These measures are to safeguard the health and safety of all stakeholders so that the show remains a secure platform for business. Three-day automotive services industry exhibition to take place from December 14-16, 2021 at Dubai World Trade Centre

A

utomechanika Dubai, the Middle East and Africa’s largest automotive service industry trade fair, will run in December 2021, with a host of new and returning features designed to keep thousands of professionals up-to-date on the latest market trends. The 18th edition of the three-day event will take place from 14-16 December 2021 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, organiser Messe Frankfurt Middle East announced today (28 January 2021). Automechanika Dubai 2021 was originally scheduled to run in June, however the December dates allow more time for the UAE’s rigorous covid-19 vaccination programme to take effect, leading to a safer in-person event environment and significantly higher physical participation. The UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention said 27 percent of the country’s population of 9.8 million has so far received a vaccine in what is one of the world’s fastest vaccination programmes per capita. The new winter dates also means Automechanika Dubai 2021 will take place during the Expo 2020 Dubai, a global mega event that is expected to attract more than 25 million visitors, with the vast majority coming from outside of the UAE. Mahmut Gazi Bilikozen, Automechanika Dubai’s Show Director, said: “We’ve always stayed in regular contact with all our stakeholders as the global automotive aftermarket community continues to navigate this unchartered territory. “From the feedback we’ve received, Automechanika Dubai’s move to December 2021 is welcomed by our customers, partners and trade associations, and allows industry professionals time to recharge their business plans for 2022.

“The team is planning a number of new exciting show features for later in the year, while all our other popular highlights will return, in addition to an exhibition floor with the biggest names in the auto aftermarket.” Held under the theme Connecting Minds, Creating the Future, Expo 2020 Dubai will be a celebration of forging global partnerships. Added Mr. Bilikozen: “At the conclusion of Automechanika Dubai, what better way for international exhibitors and visitors to spend their time than to take a few days to explore the myriad country pavilions and unique features of this six-month long mega event?. “It will be a long time between innings since the last time we hosted Automechanika Dubai, and we’re tremendously excited to bring the industry together again in a safe environment for three days under one roof at the Dubai World Trade Centre in December 2021.” A host of value-added events Automechanika Dubai covers the six major product sections of Parts & Components and Electronics & Systems; Accessories & Customizing; Tyres & Batteries; Repair & Maintenance; and Car Wash, Care & Reconditioning. The previous edition in 2019 featured 1,880 exhibitors from 63 countries, while drawing in 32,750 trade visitors from 146 countries, underlining its international scope; more than 90 percent of exhibitors and 50 percent of visitors come from outside of the UAE. This year’s event will showcase a number of exciting elements such as the Automechanika Academy, the Modern Workshop, and the Innovation Zone, which will keep the many thousands of trade buyers and industry professionals in tune with new market developments. The Innovation Zone is a dedicated area at the centre of the show floor featuring presentations and product showcases from exhibitors that are steering the course for the regional and global automotive aftermarket. Other features include the Truck, Agriculture, and Motorcycle Competence initiatives, dedicated to the entire value chain in the truck, motorbike, and agriculture sectors, from parts and accessories, to workshop equipment, body repair and care. The Automechanika Academy meanwhile will feature key presentations such as Dubai’s auto parts and accessories trade in 2020 by the Dubai Customs, as well as AfriConnections, which explores rising opportunities in the African aftermarket. Automechanika Dubai will meanwhile continue to host its popular free-to-attend webinar series, of which there’ve been 12 so far in the last seven months, with more than 4,000 attendees logging on to keep abreast of the latest auto aftermarket trends and opportunities.

Automechanika Frankfurt to Take Place as Physical Event With a New Online Program

T

his year’s Automechanika Frankfurt is taking place as a hybrid event for the first time. The primary focus will be on the physical event and all the advantages it offers. Automechanika will be supplementing these by providing all exhibitors with new opportunities to network digitally with those members of the international B2B audience who cannot travel to Frankfurt due to the pandemic. Digital features that are made available to all exhibitors free of charge maximize their reach while opening up entirely new possibilities for product presentations and communication with customers. Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt GmbH, is positive about the future: “Starting in June, the Frankfurt exhibition grounds will be hosting trade fairs once again. First up is ‘Indoor-Air’, a trade fair for ventilation and air quality, and work on the content and organization of this September’s Automechanika, our leading trade fair brand, is also in full swing. Thanks to our hygiene and safety concept, everything is in place to ensure safe events for everyone involved.” The primary focus is on face-to-face business encounters. And to ensure that customers who are still unable to travel to their normal extent in September will be able to take part, the organizers are planning a hybrid format. Michael Johannes, Brand Manager of Automechanika: “We want to bring industry players from different countries and continents together – be it live in Frankfurt or virtually from afar – to satisfy their need to network. Based on the good experience we’ve had over the past six months providing digital services for our customers not only in German-speaking countries, but also in Russia, Dubai, Shanghai and beyond, we have decided to hold Automechanika Frankfurt as a hybrid event.” ACMA Automechanika New Delhi, one of 15 Automechanika trade fairs worldwide, has also opted for the hybrid format when it takes place next month. Johannes: “Our entire international brand family works together closely, and we have gained valuable experience and expertise from each of our trade fair teams’ activities in their home countries.”

New digital features Automechanika Frankfurt is taking place as a physical event on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds in accordance with all applicable hygiene and protection measures. To ensure that networking will also be possible for those international visitors who are not able to travel to Frankfurt, exhibitors can take advantage of new digital features. Olaf Mußhoff, Director of Automechanika Frankfurt: “Thanks to a digital matchmaking and scheduling tool and facilities for live chats and one on one video calls, exhibitors will be able to communicate directly with their customers and generate new leads. We are making these services available free of charge this year to the approximately 2,000 exhibitors who have already confirmed that they are taking part.” Exhibitors’ product information and company profiles will also remain online even after the event has finished. Mußhoff: “This lets us give all participating companies greater reach.” Exhibitors can also present their product innovations via live stream. Michael Johannes explained: “We have used these months to invest in our employees’ technical skills and establish our own web studio for our customers here on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds. I am already looking forward to the videos and live streams that our exhibitors will be creating to supplement the supporting programme.” Events: in person in Frankfurt and as live streams online For everyone who is unable to travel to Frankfurt due to the coronavirus, Automechanika Frankfurt will be offering some of the supporting programme digitally as well. This means that people can take part in a select online programme that includes ‘Collision talk’, the Automechanika Innovation Awards, Automechanika Academy – an event focusing on themes that are important to the future – and a special programme for workshops. Most of the content will also be available online in the media centre afterwards.n

[TRADE SHOWS] AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET PLACES TO BE

ACMA Automechanika New Delhi moves to a virtual b2b matchmaking concept in 2021

M

esse Frankfurt India together with Auto Component Manufacturers of India (ACMA) have announced that the fifth edition of ACMA Automechanika New Delhi has been moved to an all-virtual concept. Focused on product showcases and sourcing interests, the organizers will host the industry at its virtual B2B matchmaking platform from 22 – 23 April 2021. In view of the latest developments of COVID-19 globally and its continued impact on restrictions imposed by regional governments, the large composition of Indian and overseas participants that come together at ACMA Automechanika New Delhi biannually are now presented with a focused and completely virtual platform for company presentations and product demonstrations. Emphasizing the trade show principal of connecting buyers and sellers, the platform will automatically match potential suppliers when buyers launch product or service queries and set-up virtual appointments to continue trade conversations focused on the ‘sourcing interests’. While the decision to reschedule the physical show in 2023

28

will offer safety and planning flexibility to both exhibitors and fair attendees, the need to strengthen connections and collaborations within the sector remains strong. Prioritizing trade continuity and business connections, ACMA Automechanika’s dynamic digital model will accelerate networking, contact introductions, product sales, prospects for exposure and knowledge-exchange to drive business for the sector in 2021. Mr Raj Manek, Executive Director & Board Member, Messe Frankfurt Asia Holdings Ltd shared: “With the constantly changing restrictions on travel both regionally and globally, we cannot escape the impact on planning certainty of our exhibitors. ACMA Automechanika New Delhi’s digital event days on 22 – 23 April 2021 will offer the industry an opportunity to get together at a digital location where they can engage in business dialogue and highlight sector innovations.” Originally planned as a hybrid event, Messe Frankfurt India has been working on its digital offerings for exhibitors and attendees and affirmed that the digital component continues to show a promising response making the move to virtual, a need-of-the-hour strategic step. Mr Vinnie Mehta, Director General – Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) said: “It is vital that the industry continues to engage and exchange and the shift to an allvirtual platform will open new touchpoints for the industry in the present environment. The platform’s focus on product showcases of exhibitors and sourcing interests of the attendees makes it pure business-oriented and will highlight regional demand trends.” AI-powered algorithms mean attendees get more personalised matchmaking recommendations based on their product interests, whereas the rich content, easy functionalities and access to business leads even after the show will help drive sales for exhibitors. Overall, the organisers aim to design programmes supporting business and industry development. ACMA Automechanika New Delhi’s physical fair will return in February 2023. n

e are excited to announce new dates and a new location for the 2021 edition. After careful consideration, and in light of the ongoing COVID-19 developments in Mexico and globally, we are moving INA PAACE Automechanika Mexico. This year’s edition will be held December 1 - 3 at the San Luis Potosí Convention Center in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. INA PAACE Automechanika Mexico is a unique platform that showcases the latest technology and advancements over the entire spectrum of the automotive aftermarket industry.
