Wow, talk about reach! I also want to mention the special section on the Overseas Automotive Council (OAC), which is part of AASA. It features my interview with longtime friend and incoming chairman Daniel Tristan of Tracer Products. His is a great story of how determination and grit and can lead one to the pinnacle of our industry. Also, please note OAC is having its traditional reception on Tuesday night, Nov. 2 at the conclusion of the first day of AAPEX. And there is a page thanking the sponsors of this event. Here’s our technical line-up for this issue: Keep that Steering Wheel Straight One of the most important alignment tips By Mark Willis Parking Assist Awareness & Basic Diagnostics By Ron Henningsen, Technical Editor I normally don’t give a plug to clients here, but I am going to this one time. We want to give a special thank you to our friends at ARNOTT AIR SUSPENSION PRODUCTS. Under their guiding philosophy of “go big or go home” they asked about promoting their company to our international audience in a unique way. We were happy to accommodate this request. Their program in this issue allowed them to develop their own cover ad page on top our traditional front cover. Thank you Charis Gaines and your colleagues at ARNOTT. This is the final issue of Aftermarket International and Aftermarket International en Español of 2021. It also concludes the 15th year of ownership by JABS Media LLC, of which I have the privilege of being its president. Thank you readers and advertisers who make this endeavor possible and a joy too. Comments from the Editor Like Rodney Dangerfield, Technicians Get No Respect More than a decade ago when I was editor of another automotive trade magazine, my business editor conducted a survey that showed the average age for a technician leaving the industry was 51. It’s doubtful that trend has changed much, and there are many reasons why they leave. In certain parts of the world, a skilled technician gets the same amount of respect as the late American comedian Rodney Dangerfield — None. Surveys that I have conducted over the years show that many technicians in certain regions do not receive the pay they need to provide for their families. They still don’t get the respect and compensation that others in similar trades receive. And as you know, the majority of them have to buy most of their own tools and make monthly payments to the tool vendors that stop by their shops on a regular basis. Trade organizations and progressive shop operators in many areas are doing their best to show consumers that their employees are more than hourly “grease monkeys,” as they were called in the old day. As you enter their shops, you will see proudly framed displays of their automotive certifications. A friend of mine who owns shops here in the Midwest section of the United States goes a step further. He has professional photos of them on display, accompanied by their certifications — and photos of them with their families and/or their involvement in the community. It works, providing consumers with the knowledge that these technicians are more than just the uniformed men and women they see working on their vehicles. Many don’t complain as much if the repair bill is higher than what they think it should be. Probably the No. 1 reason for leaving the industry is health. By age 50 or so, technicians’ backs, knees and other body parts begin fail. One friend of mine was forced to take disability compensation because torn muscles and nerves made it impossible for him to mount tires after completing common brake repairs. Several surgeries didn’t help improve his situation. To keep their technicians healthy, some shop operators and their teams start the day with stretching exercises and reminders on the proper way to lift heavy items, and encouraging them to ask for help if that lifting is too much for one individual to handle alone. Some even show videos explaining proper ergonomic techniques to avoid excessive wear and tear on their bodies. This may have sounded crazy to some a decade or more ago, but today it can help a shop owner as well as employee. An owners’ workers’ compensation costs can be reduced dramatically when claims go down. Even better, he isn’t faced losing capable technicians who are now unable to handle their work loads. As many of your know, finding young technicians gets harder to accomplish every year. And what about the employee who is already suffering the aches and pains of the job that prohibit him from continuing his duties. Some, with the right personalities and knowledge, have gradually been taken under the wings of management to work behind the counter, serving customers or as shop managers, depending on the size of the business. There is also a new trend of some of these older employees going out on their own. I know of one such individual in my own community who does quite well reprograming (also known as reflashing) vehicle computer modules. His back made it impossible for him to keep his job as a overall technician. Today, he makes the rounds to independent repair shops, as well a car dealerships that can’t afford to invest in all of the programs for reflashing every make and model of vehicle. This fellow doesn’t either, but he purchases update programs on a regular basis from Ford, General Motors and Kia/Hyundai. He has a full schedule going to shops and dealerships five days a week — and he even makes house calls. He came to my home and reflashed a module that was causing the air conditioner on my Ford Fusion to intermittently blow hot air. Twenty minutes after he arrived the car was blowing cold air constantly without a hitch. This is all food for thought on ways to keep this shop industry thriving. Keep That Steering Wheel Straight One of the most important alignment tips By Mark Willis
O
ver the years alignment technology has had some amazing and innovative advancements. From strings and bubbles to lasers to optical camera systems, alignments have become easier and faster to perform. But no matter what type of alignment system your shop uses, an alignment must deliver three things. It must ensure that: • The car goes straight down the road and doesn’t pull • The steering wheel is straight • The tires don’t wear prematurely Whether you have been doing alignments for two months or 20 years, one of the most frustrating feelings is to have a crooked steering wheel on a car you just aligned. Before talking about adjustments, you will want to understand why the steering wheel can be crooked after an alignment. If you’re a professional alignment technician, you have performed a check list of inspection items that will include things like tire pressure, ball joints , tie rods ends, shock and struts just to name a few. All of these items are generally tested on the alignment rack statically and hopefully you have found and replaced any problem areas that might exist. The first dynamitic test is during the test drive after the new parts are installed and the alignment is finished. We know that the front tires are going to follow the thrust line of the vehicle. That is why we make alignment adjustments to the
8
Aftermarket International
rear first then make adjustments to the front in relationship to the rear. When done properly, the front tires and thrust angle are pointing in the same direction and the steering wheel is straight. If not, the steering wheel will be off. When the steering wheel is off it begs to ask the question, what else is wrong? What can affect the thrust angle of the car dynamically that doesn’t show up in a static inspection? The first thing is to re-inspect suspension parts that can change while driving, including rear-control arm bushings or a spring shackle. The last thing to do is curse your alignment equipment or scratch your head wondering what you did wrong.
The Method The first part of the method is accomplished during the alignment. If after your post alignment test drive the steering wheel is straight there is no need to complete the second part. When the rear alignment is set and the front caster and camber adjustments are made, the last thing to do is to set the toe. Before setting the toe, loosen the tie-rod jam nuts on the rack-and-pinion or the pinch bolts if you are working on a conventional steering system and simply roll the tierod adjusters forward. As you roll each tie-rod end forward, watch the monitor and note the direction the toe moves. If the reading becomes more positive take a piece of tire chalk and
October/November 2021
aftermarketinternational.com
Figure 2
make a plus sign on the inside of that tire. If the reading goes negative put a minus on the tire. Do this on both front tires (See Figure 1). The technicians who do this have a piece of tire chalk or a paint stick hidden near one of the turn tables in the alignment rack. This first part of the method takes about 15 seconds and will help you immensely if you find the steering wheel off during the test drive. Finish setting the toe and the alignment the way you would normally do. Then take the car for a test drive. Remember the test drive is not only to make sure your repairs were performed properly but to also be aware to anything else that might be going on with that vehicle. Think about a “final-drive” check list. Of course you’re looking to see if the car pulls and the steering wheel is straight, but what of the brakes? Is the exhaust loud? How does it run? You would be doing yourself, your customer, and the shop where you work a disservice if you do not at least mention any concerns you find to your customer after the test drive. We have all fallen victim to the customer complaint “Ever since you aligned my car …” The second part of the method is done only after the test dive. After test driving the car, if it does not pull but the steering wheel of off, drive back on the rack or nearest hoist and use the following adjustment procedure. For this example we will imagine that the steering was off to the left at about the 11 o’clock position. On the left tire we have a minus sign, which meant that when we rolled the tie rod adjuster forward, the tire toed out or went negative. On the right tire there is a plus sign because the tire toed in and the reading became more positive. First we need to realize if the steering wheel is off to the left, then both tires need to be moved to the left. If the steering wheel were to the right then both tires must be moved to the right. Aftermarket International
October/November 2021
Second, take your tire chalk or paint pen and make a line thought the tie rod and the tie-rod end adjuster on both left and right tie sides. This is important because the tie-rod ends must be adjusted accurately and tires must move in the same direction. Moving the tires in the same direction will not change the total toe but it will change the position of the steering wheel. Third determine which way to turn the tie-rod ends. In our example, both tires must move to the left. The left tires is a “plus” so it will move left when the tie rod adjuster is rolled forward and likewise the right tire will move to the left when rolled forward because it was marked with a “minus”. Forth, reposition the tie-rod adjusters. Change the tie rod adjusters about 90° to 100° for each clock position the steering wheel is off. In this example, roll both adjusters forward 90° degrees, making sure they are rotated exactly the same amount. You will be able to tell this because you marked the tie-rod ends and adjusters. Turn the adjuster so the mark is 90° forward of the mark on the tie rod end (See Figure 2). Finally, tighten the lock nut or pinch bolts and take it for a test drive. You will find your steering wheel straight without changing the total toe setting and without having to mount the alignment targets and run compensation, then decide how to set toe correctly this time. This re-centering adjustment can generally be done in less than 5 minutes.

Shown are the front parking-assist sensors. Imagine in a few years if this vehicle is in an accident and the wrong bumper is installed by an inexperienced repair person.
Parking Assist Awareness & Basic Diagnostics By Technical Editor Ron Henningsen
P
arking assist is something that many new vehicle have today. It’s one of the many features that owners take for granted or take for granted until it no longer works correctly. There are many reasons that a vehicle can have an issue with its parking-assist system. Of course, accidents, even simple parkinglot wall interaction (you are parking by sonar waiting to hear that you have made contact with the wall in front of you). Other issues include extremely rough roads, where you are bottoming out the vehicle or running over objects like rocks or tree limbs. Ice and frozen slush hanging from the vehicle in frozen driving conditions and vehicle alterations can all cause issues.
10
Aftermarket International
Of course, vehicles are engineered to prevent such occurrences in “normal driving” conditions, but as we all know vehicles are frequently subjected to far more than they are designed for. The basic diagnostic tool is of course a scan tool but, in many instances, this may be a dedicated scan tool for a specific vehicle make. Have one of those or an aftermarket scan tool with the diagnostic feature to access parking-assist systems and life is good. But there is a rather simple diagnostic tool available to use and it should perhaps be step No. 1, even if you have a scan tool capable of showing data on a parking assist system — a lab scope wand.
October/November 2021
aftermarketinternational.com
2
Don’t fall into the bad habit of thinking that the customer’s vehicle with parking assist has only rear sensors. As shown here, this make and model of truck can have rear only, front and rear or no parking assist. It’s part of an option package. The easiest way to tell is to walk around the vehicle and look. Remember the basics.
5
Remember the basics. Note the battery voltage shown. There are some vehicles that will not even crank over if there is less than 12 volts available. Obviously, this, as with other vehicle systems, needs a good base, battery voltage, to operate correctly.
3 6
Many aftermarket accessories cannot be used on certain vehicles with parking-assist sensors because they block the sensors. How about when a vehicle owner puts an accessory rear support carrier in the receiver with boxes, luggage or a scooter on it. The sensor may not operate or may receive a false signal.
If a vehicle is square in a bay and the right and left edges of the bumper are the same distance from a wall/ bench the two readings shown should be the same. If not figure out the reason why.

Yes, there is a magic parking-sensor repair wand. Wave it and you can tell if the sensors are working or not when the vehicle is in normal operating mode. aftermarketinternational.com

You must wave this wand which is connected to a labscope display a correct distance from the sensor or a false inaccurate signal will be the result. A poor signal is shown here.
This is a good signal with the wand about 14 inches away from the sensor. Which wheel is being tested? Look at the scope image and think about it. It’s the Right Front sensor. The signal trails off as it moves outward from the vehicle center.
9
12
The distance of the wand to parking assist sensor is too close as shown — about 14 inches is best.
This is the Left Front sensor with a mirror image of the Right Front.
Using this information and combining it with usage of a labscope wand will enable you to do basic signal-operation tests. Are they as good as using a scan tool that will interface with the system? No, but its far better than guessing, throwing parts at the vehicle or sending it down the road to another shop or dealership that has a scan tool or lab scope/wand combination.
Editor’s note: A special thanks goes out to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale’s Automotive Technology Group for the use of their facility and their permission to take the photos used in this article.
10 This is the type of weak inaccurate signal that you will see if the wand is too close to the sensor.

Q &A By Brad Glazer
Editor’s Note: Aftermarket International has had a long association with the Overseas Automotive Council (OAC). As part of that relationship and with AAPEX coming back as an in-person event, we decided to have publisher Brad Glazer sit down, virtually, with the incoming chairperson of OAC, Daniel Tristan. Here is that Q&A:
14
Aftermarket International
Daniel Tristan
Q Brad Glazer: Let’s start at the beginning. Can you tell us where you were born, raised, your education, how did you get into the auto aftermarket and when did you start in the industry? A Daniel Tristan: I was born in Chicago, Illinois in the late 70’s and you could say that I was born into this industry. Both of my parents emigrated from Mexico in the 60’s and like many immigrant families, when they arrived in the US they were searching for the American dream. In my dad’s case that meant saving enough money to buy a Full-Service Gulf Station and building the business through the 70’s oil crisis. Later, when we moved to Texas, he purchased Texaco stations and once I turned 10 it was my job to make sure that the bathrooms were spotless, the service bays where washed and anyone that pulled into the service
October/November 2021
station got their oil and tires checked. As I got older I ‘graduated’ to patching tires, oil changes, water pumps, alternators, brake jobs, you name it. If given a little time I can still work on carburetors! It’s bananas to think that I was working in the shop before OBD ports were introduced and it’s even crazier to think that with the upcoming generation of industry leaders there will be people that will remember ‘way back when’ internal combustion engines were most of the car parc. The change in this industry is constant and you must be prepared for it. Coming from a Mexican immigrant family my parents struggled and sacrificed. There were some lean years at the shop, particularly during the recession of early 90’s but they never hesitated to invest in education. I was the first in my family to go to college and
aftermarketinternational.com
after graduating I ran the shop for a few months but ultimately it was my dad’s business, and he wasn’t ready to retire. I left the shop, bounced around at a few internet startups that were ‘revolutionizing’ the market by selling cars on-line and eventually ended up at Apple, which was a very different company back in the late 90’s. When I got there, we were weeks from going bankrupt and I worked there for several years during the corporate turnaround that created the foundation for the company we see today. However, I left Apple even though I’d learned a tremendous amount about innovation, marketing, and vision. I was in my early 20s and the global market was beckoning. I was incredibly lucky to land back in the industry with Dreyfus Global Trade, an export management company out of New York City, representing some of the premier brands in the aftermarket. At Dreyfus Global I got the chance to travel and see the world from the other end of the spectrum. Up until that point I’d only known the automotive aftermarket as a technician in a shop. Working at Dreyfus Global I learned about the market as a distributor. Today I’m fortunate enough to be with a manufacturer, Tracer Products, a leader in automotive leak detection. We sell to both the aftermarket as well as original equipment manufacturers and with the advent of electric vehicles our dyes are indispensable in modern cooling systems.
Aftermarket International
Q What do you like about the aftermarket…and what don’t you like about it? A Can I say the parties at AAPEX? The parties are great, and there is nothing like standing at a hotel bar after the show and watching the world go by. Deals for distribution in Mexico are being discussed at the same table that I was trying to figure out what shops were buying in Japan or the next trade show in Dubai. It’s an amazing industry where you can make friends for life. I have friends that I only see at AAPEX but every year we pick up right where we left off. These tight networks are great for friendships and for doing business, but it also makes it difficult for others to break in. The problem is that we tend to be a very insular industry and while that’s changing with things like the AASA Mix Group and Auto Care’s YANG group, there is still a long way to go.
Q What motivated you
to become involved with the Overseas Automotive Council (OAC)? A Money. International distribution is difficult and if you want to do it right and make money, and a career out of it, then it’s even harder. The members of the OAC are old hands at the game and have been successful at it for a very long time. In fact, did you know that the OAC was founded in 1923? We celebrate our 100-year anniversary in 2 years. If you think about the fact that
October/November 2021
the Model-T was still being produced when the OAC was founded, you realize that there is a tremendous amount of knowledge within the council and its members. For example, do you want to know which international markets are ‘hot’ and which are ‘not’? It’s being discussed at the OAC. How is the aftermarket dealing with tariffs? It’s being discussed at the OAC. What vehicle electrification looks like in Europe? It’s being discussed at the OAC. From the Global Summit in Miami to the monthly Espresso Chats, the OAC is a prism that helps you provide color for the global market. But more important than the formal events that are held throughout the year are the friendships and network that the OAC provides. To be able to pick up the phone and ask how others in the industry are navigating the USMCA in Mexico, Covid in Colombia or emerging markets in Southeast Asia is invaluable to growing a global business.
Q When does your term begin as Chairperson (or is it Chair or Chairman)? How long is the term and can you succeed yourself? Are you elected and if so by whom? A The chairperson holds a two-year term. My term starts this coming November 2021 and runs through November 2023. I can’t succeed myself and all officers, as well as future board members, are elected by the board.
Q Besides your work with OAC, what is your “day job”?
A I’m Director of International at Tracer Products where we export to distributors in more than 150 countries. We’re a family run company that was founded in 1955 and we’ve been at the forefront of leak detection technology for more than 25 years. Our Tracerline fluorescent dyes are so effective that they have been successfully installed in more than 275 million vehicles to date!
Q What is the mission(s) of OAC?
A The mission of the Council is to promote the international sale of aftermarket and heavy duty products exported through North America, to enhance the prestige and goodwill of the automotive and heavy duty aftermarket industry, and to promote friendly trade relationships, cultural understanding and mutually beneficial cooperation among those engaged in the aftermarket industry. Sound, progressive business practices are mainstays of Council policy.
Q Why do you recommend membership?
A The OAC is a crystal
ball. From a corporate perspective, American automotive aftermarket suppliers are missing out on key market trends and data if they don’t have an employee participating in the Overseas Automotive Council (OAC). The world is an interconnected place and what happens overseas not only impacts domestic decisions but can
aftermarketinternational.com
15
provide a peak into the future. For example, the pandemic and its impact on global trade was discussed at the OAC Global Summit weeks before it started making news in the United States. The members of the OAC and more importantly, the conversations that take place during the events, provide manufacturers with a global insight you can’t find in a report or on the news. From a career perspective the OAC is a turnkey network into the world of global trade. The group of mentors and colleagues that can help with things as mundane as the best flights to take to Sao Paulo or as complicated as navigating Chinese tariffs, is at your fingertips. Participation in the council means you can learn about the Mexican Peso collapse of the 90s or the economic aftermath of the Japanese earthquakes from people that lived through it. There is no better way to learn the ropes of the global automotive aftermarket or to meet international decision makers-- than participating in the OAC.
Q What goals do you hope to attain for OAC during your leadership of the organization? A We have two goals. First and foremost, our goal is to increase the value of the OAC for our members. Personally, I hope to build upon the foundation that my predecessor, Steve Holloway, established. Whether it be through the monthly Espresso Chats, which cover a range of topic of interest to exporters or through the Global Summit
16
that takes place in Miami in February. The OAC provides a conduit to the international market. Second, we’re interested in ‘opening up’ the council and providing more access to its network and expertise. This means more outreach to our international members, career development for millennials or Gen Z professionals looking to break into the global market and creating a council that’s approachable and accessible. Fortunately, that outreach is easier to do today than it was a few years ago. The pandemic has caused the market to shift so that a ‘face to face’ meeting is no more than a few clicks away. Facets of the current economy such as working from home, international video conference calls and children and pets popping into your background are here to stay.
Q Can you tell us about your
family, other interests when not working? Other positions you hold on a volunteer basis? A Prior to the pandemic, traveling kept me busy but in addition to the OAC I’m fortunate to be a part of the AASA Board of Governors. One day, if I have any free time, I want to rebuild a 1965 GTO convertible. When I was turning wrenches, I rebuilt a 1969 Camaro RS and a few years later I resorted a 1965 Lincoln Continental- there’s just nothing like the sound of a
Aftermarket International
1960’s American engine. When it comes to family, I must admit that shining star is my wife. Not only is she published, a leader in her field, director of a leading residency program and a wonderful mother to two young girls but as a physician she has been in the trenches of this pandemic for the last year and she hasn’t skipped a beat. Moreover, she’s been kind enough to put up with my crazy travel schedule all these years.
Q Are there any mentors who
helped you along the way? Who were they and how did they assist you? A In addition to the OAC and its members, which have been instrumental in evaluating and opening key markets, there are three people that have been key to my career. My father, Steve Jobs and Steven Dreyfus. My dad showed me that it doesn’t matter where you come from, in America it’s about grit and a desire to keep learning. Curiosity is indispensable and questions can be more important than answers. With Steve, I only met him a handful of times, but his fingerprints were all over everything we did at Apple. It was at Apple that I learned the value of vision and culture to spur innovation. When I started with Steven Dreyfus in the first part of this century he promised that he would teach me about business and the global aftermarket and he more than delivered. The lessons were simple but priceless: cash flow, margin and revenue are indispensable if you want to stay in business,
October/November 2021
negotiations can be more of an art than a science and never forget why we do this— to have fun! Oh, and one more important lesson: “sin café no hay vida.”
Q What is the cost of membership and what does that entitle members as far as benefits? A Domestic membership runs $645 a year, a Premier International membership runs $150, and a Basic international membership is free, but it doesn’t include tickets to the events. Autopromotec 2022 Pre-Entry Numbers Are Growing Expectations are growing among exhibitors for the next edition of Autopromotec. The event - dedicated to automotive equipment and after-sales service - is scheduled to take place from May 25-28, 2022 at the BolognaFiere exhibition center. A month after the opening of registration, the numbers confirm the great desire of companies to return to exhibit and relaunch their business activities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ICE Agency and Promotec have signed an agreement (confirming the great interest in the automotive and exhibition sectors) to support the initiatives of Autopromotec 2022. This is the first major international event in the automotive aftermarket sector to take place after the long exhibition blackout. The agreement focuses on support for the incoming of foreign buyers as well as the international promotion of Autopromotec 2022 in countries considered essential in terms of trade relations. Another pillar of the initiative is the Futurmotive Exhibition Project. This will be a place showing scenarios linked to the future of mobility, including the engines of the future and the ecological sustainability of the entire sector; the transformation of the urban ecosystem that dialogues with the car and the driver (it learns and innovates); smart transportation and cybersecurity; new materials for vehicles and urban furnishings. The largest portion of the resources will be used to invite to Italy delegates such as importers and distributors of automotive components, representatives of major car manufacturers, buyers of automotive equipment, tires and components, intermediaries of workshop networks, trade associations (from the markets with the highest turnover), and the trade press. “The interest received so far in Autopromotec 2022 from exhibiting companies is a sign that the automotive sector and its supply chain are on the upswing”, said Renzo Servadei, Autopromotec CEO. ollowing a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SEMA Show will be held November 25 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The annual trade show will bring more than 2,400 automotive parts and accessories manufacturers together with resellers and distributors from 145 countries. SEMA 2021 will offer attendees the chance to see the newest automotive performance products, discover the latest product and vehicle trends, and hone their skills by attending any of the free education sessions – all of which are led by top industry professionals. The completion of the new 1.4 million square foot Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall expansion and the resulting reconfiguration of the overall SEMA Show floorplan optimizes the use of the facility for the 2021 SEMA Show. These enhancements will improve the SEMA Show experience for exhibitors and buyers by making the entire event easier to navigate with new features that will ease congestion and encourage greater interaction. Prioritizing education, the SEMA Show will feature more than 100 business and professional development seminars, bringing together a collection of industry and business thought leaders to drive innovation, spark ideas and address the evolving business landscape. Show organizers expect these ideas to equip both individuals and businesses to meet the needs of today while preparing for the opportunities of tomorrow. An additional feature of the show will be 1,500 vehicles displayed in exhibitor booths and around the interior and exterior areas of the Las Vegas Convention Center. These vehicles will showcase the industry’s latest trends and newest technologies, and the SEMA Show’s mobile app will contain a new interactive feature that gives users detailed information on featured vehicles displayed throughout the show floor, including make and model, information on the exhibitor displaying the vehicle, and a list of products installed on the vehicle. SEMA 2021’s New Products Showcase will give visitors an opportunity to discover more than 3,000 of the latest exhibitor products, all displayed in one location on the Skybridge of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Attendees can use the SEMA Show mobile app’s “Product Scanner” feature to scan and

download product photos and exhibitor information that will remain on the SEMA Show app long after the 2021 show has ended. SEMA Show will also offer free scanners at designated booths in the showcase. After attendees have scanned the latest products, they can make their way to the “Scanner Return” desk and instantly receive a printout of all the products they have scanned.

DAW returns for its 16th year January 24 through January 27, 2022 at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in the Dallas suburb of Grapevine, Texas. The 2020 show was the largest North American gathering of the independent heavy-duty industry, according to the show’s website, with more than 2,300 executives and managers from the U.S., Canada, and six other countries in attendance. Conference organizers have announced “Strong Like You” as the theme for HDAW 2022, a nod to the industry’s resilience during the pandemic. David McCleave, Director of Marketing and Aftermarket at Hendrickson, and Bill Nolan, President at PBS Truck Parts, have been named as the conference co-chairs. Bill Betts of Betts Truck Parts and Service has been named as distributor vice-chair.
“While we appreciated the chance to connect virtually, we now truly recognize and value our industry’s need to connect and do business in person,” stated Nolan, the newly-elected distributor chair for HDAW ‘22. “This year’s theme, ‘Strong Like You,’ represents the grit, dedication, and boldness required to make it in our industry, and these past two years have helped us to realize we are stronger when we are all together. I look forward to working closely with David and conference organizers to shape this year’s return.” HDAW is the industry’s largest gathering of heavy duty aftermarket professionals, providing attendees with four days of education, workshops, business meetings, product training, and networking opportunities with industry executives of heavy duty suppliers, and a

product expo that offers an exclusive view of the latest products in the heavy duty aftermarket. “I’m honored to be selected as the supplier chair for HDAW ’22 and will work with Bill to use our backgrounds to craft a hands-on experience full of the latest education, invaluable networking opportunities, and two years’ worth of new products,” said McCleave. “Like you, the aftermarket industry is strong, and HDAW ‘22 will be our opportunity to stay on top of the resources and education needed to navigate and move past the challenges we’ve faced. We can’t wait to see you there.” Education sessions planned for the 2022 event will address logistics, freight and other supply chain issues, offer strategies for retaining quality employees, and help to strengthen attendees’ e-commerce strategy in a changing market.
