s we are publishing our first issue of 2022 it’s really my first time to communicate with our

readership since AAPEX of last year. Yes, I attended, Covid notwithstanding. And I am glad I did. The people who put on the show are to be congratulated. They really did a great job in having a major aftermarket event for the first time in 2 years. And while the show was much smaller than in the past, at least in terms of number of exhibitors, I do believe those who were there were glad to be. I know I was. It was very well organized and the attendees were wearing masks. For those who were not vaccinated

I am sure the task of organizing and administering the show was not a pleasant one. And while I have called on AAPEX to become an every other year event, which has fallen on deaf ears, I want to give credit where it’s due. The mood of the attendees and exhibitors was positive… to me that was the best part of the event. Onward and upward was the prevailing attitude, and I subscribe to it wholeheartedly. Now onto other things… Just received a note that Automechanika Moscow is cancelled, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. No surprise. It’s so strange… Covid eliminates tradeshows for about two years (and prevented AFTERMARKET INTERNATIONAL from having its first trade show AutoAmericas, at least temporarily) and now this. Of course, that’s a very, very minor concern compared with what is taking place internationally. Getting back to the more mundane…as usual we provide you with two important technical features in this issue:

Comments from the Editor Saving Technicians’ Bodies & Saving Our Planet Body Stress In the last issue, my column Like Rodney Dangerfield, Technicians Get No Respect, I noted that on average, automotive technicians leave the industry at age 51. The main reason is that their bodies have been damaged over the years by hard work. Bad backs, knees, and shoulders are just a few of the casualties. While some move on to counter jobs, others aren’t cut out to deal with consumers. These situations leave shop owners with the constant battle of finding replacements. The likely candidates are novice technicians who will eventually make the grade, but it will take time. However, there is a way to keep those veteran technicians working longer. Shop owners can help extend the careers technicians careers a number of ways. Some may draw criticism and others may draw cheers. • A shop owner who recently expanded to two shops in the same city starts each day having his team members perform stretching exercises. The trick to the mandate is that he does the same exercises with them. Sometimes fellow employees try to outdo a fellow worker to stay in better shape. • Weekly meetings include reminder lifting techniques that put less strain on knees, backs, shoulders and other body parts. The shop also offers back braces, which come in handy especially for tire-and-wheel service. • Is your shop due for some new equipment? Take a look at the new tire-mounting machines available that do virtually all of the heavy lifting. Are they more expensive? Sure, but think of the savings when someone is forced to take disability. • Are you building a new shop? If your business is in a cold climate, consider a heating system that is installed underneath the concrete floor. The heat radiates upward and warms most of an individual’s body. One of the biggest complaints from techs during cold weather is hold cold their feet get. Also, consider how air conditioning makes a technician more efficient in the summer. • As technicians age, take a close look and see which ones might be good behind the counter or as a shop manager. Discuss it with them, and then offer them a chance to use their people skills with customers. What do you have to lose? Electric & Hybrid Vehicles Some shops throughout the world still back away from servicing hybrid and electric vehicles, even for simple services. “I’ll be retired by the time they take over the market” is a common statement. It’s time for smart shop operators to take another look at this growing segment in the industry. It’s just not Tesla anymore. Nearly every vehicle maker is promoting its electric automobile version on TV. If that’s not enough, Hertz, one of the largest vehicle rental agencies in the world, just ordered 100,000 Tesla models for its fleet. Those vehicles will be resold to the public within two or three years. If those consumers have to take those electrics to a new car dealer for service, they may do the same for their gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles as well. Talk to your suppliers and see what type of training they offer or plan to offer. Also, check with you local vocational/technical schools where your best techs can advance their knowledge. Do you still think you’ll be retired and will have sold your shop by the time electric vehicles are the norm. Who will buy your shop from you if the customer base is limited to internal-combustion automobiles? Remember the shops that scoffed at working on fuel injection, ABS and stability control? Most of them finally got involved or slowing faded away. One more personal note: Although the popularity of electric vehicles continues to increase, it will be interesting to see how its growth plays with the environment. It seems some may be “robbing Peter to pay Paul” in the manufacturing process. Many look at these vehicles as the means to eliminate the need for fossil fuel, thus reducing the carbon footprint. However, the mining of nickel, especially in the Brazilian rain forests, and the strip mining of lithium carbonate in the Congo and Russia, may be just as harmful to the planet. And, will the world’s power grids be advanced enough to handle these plug-ins?

teering axis inclination (SAI), along with included angle (IA) and camber, are often used as diagnostic tools by the clever alignment technician. Although most modern alignment machines will provide SAI angle measurements, they are seldom used because they are not often understood.

The Basics The first aspect to understand about SAI is its relationship to other steering angles and measurements; measurements like caster, camber and included angle. The steering axis is the imaginary line drawn through the steering pivot points like the upper and lower ball joints on a short/long-arm suspension (SLA) (Figure 1A) or the strut bearing and the lower ball joint on a strut-type suspension as seen from the front of the vehicle (Figure 1B). SAI is the angle between the steering axis and zero degrees or a true vertical line when viewed from the front of the vehicle. The caster angle is the same imaginary steering axis line passing through the upper and lower pivot points of the vehicle when viewed from the side (Figure 1C). These pivot points can be upper and lower ball joints on a short/long-arm suspension system, or the lower ball joint and upper bearing plate on a conventional strut suspension. If the top of the steering axis is rearward of the bottom of the steering axis, then we have positive caster measured in degrees. This puts the contact patch of the tire behind the imaginary caster line, which makes the wheel want to follow the projected angle just 8

like the front of a bicycle. The car will pull or drift to the side with the least caster. Caster readings can be split from side to side to compensate for road crown. The purpose of caster is for directional stability and returnability of the steering wheel. Camber is usually measured in degrees and is the amount the tire and wheel are leaning in (negative) or out (positive) compared to true vertical or zero camber (Figure 2). A tire that has excessive camber will wear tires abnormally fast. Camber readings can be split from side to side to compensate for road crown. The car will pull or drift to the side with the most Figure 1C

positive camber. As a vehicle gets older, and the springs and suspension begin to sag, one would expect the camber angle to drift negative with wear on the inside edge of the tire. Included angle (IA) is defined as SAI plus camber. If camber is positive, IA will be greater than SAI. If camber is negative, IA will be less than SAI (Figure 3) .These three angles are used in combination for diagnosis of bent suspension parts. Variations in SAI. camber and included angle will help lead the technician to the problem component. A helpful advantage of SAI is to cause the steering to return to center after a turn. By inclining the steering axis inward, the spindle will rise and fall as the wheels are turned in one direction or the other. As the steering is turned left or right the spindle will travel up or down in an arc (Figure 4) The downward movement of the spindle will lift the body of the vehicle against the effect of gravity. When the driver releases the wheel, gravity pushing against the vehicle and causes the steering to return to center. Since SAI helps the car to maintain or seek a straight-ahead position, less positive caster is needed to maintain directional stability. The more SAI built into a vehicle the less caster will

Outside tire wear Vertical

affect the steering. On high SAI vehicles it is less likely that splitting the caster will work for road crown adjustment and splitting camber may be more useful. Using SAI and IA for diagnosis By using the relationship between camber, SAI and IA it becomes easier to find steering and suspension problems that may have been overlooked. Since SAI is a fixed angle that is built into the suspension, one can bet there is something wrong if the side-to-side difference is more than 1.5 degrees or so. If SAI is off, you have a bent component causing one of the two pivot points to have been moved. Comparing the SAI with camber and IA will help narrow down where the problem is, and, what to look for. Here are a couple of examples. Let’s say one has a vehicle with a bent lower control arm on an SLA vehicle. What kind of reading would be expected? A bend would cause the control arm to be shorter causing the ball joint to be closer to the frame. The SAI angle would decrease while the initial camber reading would increase. An unsuspecting alignment technician might try adjusting the

camber back to factory specs not realizing there is a problem until the final test drive — or a customer complaint. The technician may have camber, caster and toe “perfect,” but the vehicle will still pull due to the SAI difference from side to side. A test drive would reveal drivability problems only after wasted time spent aligning a car with bent parts. Wouldn’t it be better to find the problems before the alignment? Most technicians don’t get paid for doing the job twice. What kind of reading would you get with a bent spindle or knuckle? Since the pivot points of the control arm (ball joints) haven’t moved, the SAI reading would be normal. The camber and the IA would be well out of range. The only way to have the camber and IA above or below specification while the SAI is normal is to have a bent spindle or knuckle.

This is why understanding the relationships between SAI, IA and camber is so important. Most modern alignment machines will calculate the different angles and give you a chance to look for problems before spending time aligning a car that can’t, or shouldn’t, be aligned. Below is a useful chart (Figure 5) which shows the relationship between SAI, Camber, and IA for different style suspensions. Check alignment readings and use this chart before spending time aligning a vehicle with bent suspension components. n

City prepared for deployment order from the state – first aid center for Ukraine refugees at Messe Frankfurt More and more people seeking protection from Ukraine are currently arriving in Frankfurt by train, bus, plane or private car. The city is the central contact point for refugees in Hesse. For days, those responsible have been preparing intensively to prevent a situation like the one in Berlin. A corresponding operational order from the state to the city’s lower disaster control authority to create a first aid center was issued on Wednesday. A first aid center with emergency accommodation for refugees from Ukraine is being built at Messe Frankfurt from the end of this week. In Hall 1 on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds, there will be a first port of call where everything necessary will be provided until the people can be placed in longer-term accommodation throughout Hesse. A contract to this effect was concluded with the city at short notice and without red tape. “The people fleeing to us from Ukraine need our help. They must be able to trust that our declarations of solidarity are not just lip service,” says Peter Feldmann, Lord Mayor of the City of Frankfurt. “That is why the first aid centre that we are setting up at short notice at our trade fair is so important. Frankfurt is a cosmopolitan city that has become a second home for many refugees in its history. Let’s show the people from Ukraine that they are welcome here.” The emergency shelter will initially be set up in Hall 1.1 and can also be extended to the second level, Hall 1.2, if required. “I am pleased that the state has taken up my suggestion that the distribution of people in Hesse should also be managed from Frankfurt and has given us the corresponding operational order,” says Frankfurt’s head of social affairs Elke Voitl. “This saves the refugees further journeys after the exhausting flight. In our experience so far, most people arrive here traumatized, very exhausted and often hungry,” says the city leader. “About half of those seeking protection are children and young people. For them, it is particularly important to quickly have a protected and safe place to breathe again. We want to create this here in Frankfurt with the fair near the main railway station, together with all our forces,” says Elke Voitl. The shelter is run by the German Red Cross (DRK) and the Arbeiter-SamariterBund (ASB). Messe Frankfurt is responsible for the construction and other services within the accommodation. “We have quickly and unbureaucratically set up emergency accommodation on our exhibition grounds in Hall 1, as immediate assistance is required,” says Uwe Behm, the Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt responsible for the exhibition grounds. “This has become a first point of contact or intermediate station to provide people who have had to flee Ukraine with everything they need until they can be placed in longer-term accommodation.” In addition to the corresponding preparations for the infrastructure on the exhibition grounds, Fairconstruction, a subsidiary of Messe Frankfurt, is helping to equip two sports halls for refugees in Frankfurt with stand construction materials. Trade Fair Activities More Important Than Ever Messe Frankfurt is looking ahead to the coming financial year 2022 with cautious optimism. Speaking at the End-of-Year Press Talk earlier today, Wolfgang Marzin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Messe Frankfurt, said: “We are registering a very strong desire on the part of our customers to participate in our trade fairs, even though the situation remains volatile and there is much uncertainty in the sectors.” “For years, Messe Frankfurt has set one record after the next”, said Peter Feldmann, Chairman of the Messe Frankfurt Supervisory Board and Mayor of Frankfurt: “The coronavirus brought us to an abrupt halt. But we have a strong team of 2,300 employees with strong management at the helm. Rather than burying their heads in the sand when the crisis hit, they rolled up their sleeves instead. With new concepts and future-oriented trade fairs like Eurobike, Messe Frankfurt is ideally positioned for the postcoronavirus market. As the company’s shareholders, the City of Frankfurt and the federal state of Hesse are

12

behind it 100 percent. We will do everything we can to ensure that the company gets through the crisis in good shape. Messe Frankfurt can rely on us.” As Wolfgang Marzin emphasized: “The physical trade fair business model is alive and well – with a complexity and diversity that is only found in face-to-face interaction. The trade fairs that have taken place in recent months under tried and tested safety and hygiene standards have all pointed to a high level of intensity and customer satisfaction.” Nonetheless, the recovery is set to take longer than originally thought, especially in the case of the major international flagship events in Frankfurt. While some 150 trade fairs and exhibitions were held around the world under the Messe Frankfurt banner before the pandemic, provisional figures for the current financial year 2021 indicate less than half this figure. In the first half of the year, in which a high proportion of Group trade fairs are usually held, it was scarcely possible for any events to take place, especially at the company’s Frankfurt base. Outside Germany, events were repeatedly postponed at the Group’s 50 or so locations around the world; in other cases, trade fairs that had been planned as analogue events were held in digital

Aftermarket International

form instead. This means that, for the second year in a row, Messe Frankfurt has had to contend with a pandemic. Accordingly, the company expects sales to be in the region of €140 million and the Group result to be even lower than in the previous financial year. Wolfgang Marzin: “The effects of the pandemic will not be so easy to shake off, particularly as far as global travel is concerned.” In the short term, this could – depending on the sectors – initially lead to a trend towards a more continental focus for events, including in Europe. Wolfgang Marzin: “Our practice of continually setting regional areas of focus for our international business early on is now paying off twofold.” Messe Frankfurt has been active in the key business centres for more than three decades and is extremely well networked with subsidiaries and events established in the domestic markets there. With corresponding structures and the market size that we have achieved so far, the company is giving its sectors access to continental, national and regional markets. As Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt, explained: “When developing

aftermarketinternational.com

our trade fair platforms, we see it as our job to fuse the improved information provided digitally with the live experience of a trade fair event. Our customers will find many elements on our digital platforms that they are used to finding at our analogue events. This increases the international reach both for exhibiting companies and for retail buyers, allowing them to forge new contacts and facilitating knowledge transfer across borders and regardless of travel restrictions.” Wherever it makes sense to do so, Messe Frankfurt bundles its expertise and developments relating to common thematic areas and trade fairs by entering into cooperation and joint venture activities with associations and organizers. As Uwe Behm, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt, stressed: “Over the past weeks, we have firmly established fairnamic GmbH, the company we set up together with Messe Friedrichshafen.” With the Friedrichshafen-based company, Messe Frankfurt plans to further intensify its longstanding collaboration in connection with the Aero South Africa and Eurobike trade fairs. Eurobike will be relocating to Frankfurt next year with a view to facilitating further growth. The work on Hall 5 is progressing well. Uwe Behm: “We are on schedule for completing this final piece of our master plan for our exhibition grounds.” After being forced to put the brakes on – or, at best, to remain in second gear – for almost two years, Messe Frankfurt wants to get started again in the new year. Wolfgang Marzin: “Even though the situation remains volatile, we are going into the new financial year with cautious optimism.” Aftermarket International

Feedback from customers, particularly international ones, has been very positive. Uwe Behm: “In recent weeks, we activated all of our halls again, meaning that our entire exhibition grounds were in operation.” For cost reasons, five halls were not included in the network in recent months. Detlef Braun: “More than 500 events are planned for financial year 2022, including many flagship events at our Frankfurt base such as Ambiente, Light + Building and IFFA. We are optimistic that participants will be able to travel to Germany from almost any country in the world without being subject to quarantine.” With around 30 new events currently scheduled to make their debut between now and 2025, Messe Frankfurt is continuing to invest within Germany and worldwide. On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics, the company is also organizing joint German activities at selected international events. More than 20 German pavilions will be set up in the coming year. In addition, Messe Frankfurt will be playing host to new guest events at its Frankfurt base in 2022, including Chemspec Europe, Enlit Europe and Parcel & Post Expo. “We are concentrating on our strengths and, even in these challenging times, are continuing to invest in our portfolio around the world, in our Frankfurt base and in our workforce. This also includes the excellent training we give to young people”, said Marzin, summing up the Group’s strategic orientation: “However, the future development of our business will of course depend on the progress of vaccinations around the world, on the attendant relaxation of travel restrictions, the resumption of business travel and the desire to be globally active again.”

To help it in development of current and future advanced diesel engine platforms, Cummins is buying Jacobs Vehicle Systems. Best known for the Jake Brake, today Jacobs also provides cylinder deactivation, start-and-stop and thermal management technologies. It’s a homecoming of sorts; in 1961, Jacobs introduced the first engine brake for commercial vehicles, which was invented by Clessie Cummins, the founder of Cummins. The acquisition is part of Cummins’ continuing investment in key technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower the air quality impacts of their products. Engine braking and cylinder deactivation technologies will be key components to meeting current and future emissions regulations. This acquisition will allow Cummins to better integrate these vital components with its medium- and heavyduty engines. Both Cummins and Jacobs have also been working with Tula to test more sophisticated algorithms for cylinder deactivation technology. The acquisition of the Altra Industrial Motion subsidiary also secures engine components for current and aftermarket products, and expands the Cummins Turbo Technologies’ business unit.

Approaching New Technology Strategy with

Advanced Driver-Assist Systems By Kent Meckfessel

A

cquaintances often explain they are not sure about all the new features on their late-model cars and have been disabling advanced driver-assist system (ADAS) features due to annoyance and distracting their driving. A lack of trust or fear of the new-age equipment is common among some new-car owners. Technicians in the field servicing these vehicles may have the same apprehension about service and repair on these systems. Throughout the years working in the auto service industry there is an intimidation factor to all the new equipment as it becomes common on every make and model. Even tire-pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) had a learning curve that seemed to scare shops away from servicing tires. Now that every car has this safety feature it seems less daunting. Another generation cycle has started with late-model safety systems that seem to be an enormous challenge to conquer and much more involved with the enhanced electronics and networking of today’s automobile. The new systems include the tags like Lane Keep Warning (LKW) and Assist (LKA), Adaptive Cruise control (ACC), Blind Spot Warning (BSW), and parking assistance among others. These features all stem from the advancements in safety systems like Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) that are soon to be standard safety equipment on most new vehicles. The same

20

Aftermarket International

input peripherals used to increase safety are also adding semiautonomous features to enhance the driver’s experience and assist in specific driving maneuvers. These peripherals include the cameras (Figure 1), radar (Figure 2), sonar, lidar and GPS in some instances, all working together to develop a sense of the outside world beyond the fenders. The peripherals form an idea of the driving conditions just like the human brain, using our sense of sight, sound and touch to distinguish the driving responses in every day traffic. The only difference is we can reduce human error with these added technologies and respond faster and during unforeseen conditions. A term called sensor-fusion is the use of all these peripheral methods to capture a more accurate and dependable description of the driving condition as a whole. (Figure 3)

April 2022

Figure 4

Figure 5

Figure 6

Figure 9

Using the sensor-fusion process to compare peripheral data to make suggestive warnings to the driver, adjustments to driving or even taking emergency action when eminent is the end goal. This all sounds easy but how do we get from using this new sensing technology to assisting the driver in these conditions? The major outputs functions of the system are already on the vehicles, including electric power steering (Figure 4), anti-lock braking (Figure 5), throttle-plate actuator (Figure 6), and electric parking brake systems (Figure 7). These outputs can be controlled by the driver or computer interventions for the active assistance to the drivers. For the more passive systems, instrument panel alerts, warning lights in mirrors, haptic feedback in the seats or steering wheel, can be computer-controlled alerts. With a basic understanding of how the new features operate, let us discuss reducing the anxiety related to the additional knowledge needed of these new systems. A multi-step process is logical to ease into the systems and simplify the chaos. The steps will be Identifying the vehicles equipped, Experience and expectation of proper operation, Awareness of the components involved, and finally Service needs of the systems. Following the logic through this plan can make the tasks involved in the daily auto service less mysterious and develop more confidence for us less technology savvy, yet mechanically minded technicians.

Aftermarket International

April 2022

Identification Identifying the vehicle and level of driver assistance can be accomplished many different ways, most of which are simple visual inspection or intuition of the technician. The early models started in about 2010 with parking assistance built into the rear bumper and gave a beeping alert when nearby obstacles were in the range of the sonar sensors. (Figure 8) These sensors, mounted in the bumper, are the initial indicators as well as the age of the vehicle. Some additional features like blind spot awareness are hidden well and not as obvious so more involved investigation will be required.

Figure 8

aftermarketinternational.com

21

Many times the warning indicators in the mirrors are a giveaway. (Figure 9) The BSW radar peripheral inputs are not easily spotted in plain view and are behind body panels and bumper covers (Figure 10). The forward view cameras used in lane keep and automatic cruise control are usually mounted in the windshield area above the rearview mirror area. The smaller surround view cameras are visible from the exterior with small fish eyes bulging out of the sideview mirrors, grills and emblems on the front and rear body panels. Experience and Expectations Expecting what level of assistance and how well it performs the function is difficult to measure since all the vehicle manufactures seem to operate differently. The best advice is to determine if passive warning or an active correction is expected to take place. The name of the feature is usually the give-away and owner’s manuals are a great resource as well as the vehicle manufactures website of the option. Experience in different makes and models with some driving time will be a huge benefit, so take the customer test drive an extra mile farther when you see the opportunity. As a rookie ADAS technician, I had a customer concern on a 2017 Toyota Prius that the BSM light was illuminated on the dash and the rear proximity beeper (as customer referred to it) was no longer working on the vehicle. A recent small rear bumper incident was evidenced by a crease in the bumper cover and a small scuff of paint. No diagnostic codes were present in any module on the car but the system was not operating as the customer recalled it once had. The BSM light was on and blaring in the face of the customer that something had gone wrong and there was evidence of a hit to the rear bumper. A test of the rear sonar sensors was done with a Pico scope and all performed great. Then initiated calibration of the rear radars located behind the bumper covers to ensure they were working and the calibration was within specification and was good there. Eventually, I decided to search technical service bulletins (TSBs) and additional service

22

Aftermarket International

information with no help. The third day of diagnosing found the BSM light was on because it was enabled, not a fault. Additionally, the proximity sensors (Toyota names this rear cross traffic alert) feature was turned off. When this feature was turned on in the menu on the instrument cluster the proximity beeper worked as designed again and an RCTA light was illuminated next to the BSM light. I discovered this critical information in online videos from Toyota describing the operation of the BSM and RCTA. The lessons learned here: • ADAS lights are not always faults. • Know how the features are expected to work before diagnosing it as a fault. The fix was education of the customer and the technician! One note that comes to mind: This is very difficult and owner’s manuals and service information may have listed all the possibilities but we know not every car has the level of options or trim package as the manual must cover them all. Every year at daylight savings I reset the time on my car radio, but when I open the owner’s manual I tend to have to match one of four possible radio options before finding the mysterious time set button. The ADAS features may be listed for all options possible not just the ones present on the vehicle. Awareness The next step of awareness includes being able to identify the sensors and relate it to a feature on the vehicle. An easy example to understand is that the front camera is obviously not going to help the rear collision avoidance with the sensor fusion process strategy, but rear radar and sonar may work together to develop parking aid features. This will become important when searching how to service or diagnose situation by beginning to understand the component needed to make up the structure of the individual feature. The windshield repair business has to recalibrate many forward cameras but very few have the ability, knowledge or need to worry about radar systems due to the locations on the car. Therefore, understanding how the connection between certain input peripherals can affect the many driver’s assistance features is critical. Service There is a huge race in the industry to market service calibration equipment this year with several aftermarket companies to service the all-makes-and models platform. Before any large investments, the first three steps need to be evaluated to determine your level of involvement and what additional

procedure or potentially lead to an improper working feature and a liability after the work is completed. Before overwhelming yourself in the new technology and advancements in the rapid-changing automotive industry, use your own senses to understand the features. Surround yourself with the vehicle and drivers of these richly featured cars and take advantage of every opportunity to engage with options before being expected to repair. Autobody, glass repair, and mobile technicians have been affected prior to the general service and undercar shop and can be a great resource to inquire about tools, equipment, and service procedures. Reducing the intimidation by breaking down systems, servicing the basics and having a source to complete difficult or more involved service is a great start for ADAS solutions. n equipment may be required. Daimler Trucks North America — Detroit DD15 Gen 5 Engine The latest generation of Detroit’s DD15 engine has almost 50% new componentry and features increased downspeeding and improved combustion. Combined with fine-tuning by Detroit’s engineers, it delivers up to a 3% improvement in fuel efficiency from propulsion alone, according to the company. A new ball bearing simple geometry turbocharger reduces friction and allows peak power and torque to be reached faster. Modified inlet ports in engine cylinders and a new piston bowl shape combine to create a swirl effect that creates a fuel spray pattern for better atomization. A new EPA GHG21compliant aftertreatment system cuts weight by more than 60 pounds while increasing nitrous oxide conversion and, dependent on duty cycle, allowing increased diesel particulate filter service intervals. ThermoCoasting is a new feature that prevents aftertreatment cool-down during a driving regen to keep the system at the optimum regen temperature. ThermoCoasting will engage engine brakes when necessary between 900 and 1,500 rpm while the engine mimics coasting by maintaining zero torque at the flywheel to balance power delivery.

Anthony Liftgates — MRT-XL Because the increased demand for last-mile delivery isn’t just about small boxes, Anthony Liftgates created the MRT-XL liftgate to help a long-time customer whose drivers were struggling to safely offload extra-large items such as hot tubs. In theory, railgate liftgate platforms can be made very large, but you lose full access to the rear door. Anthony’s solution was the MRT-XL, which features a tri-fold platform that opens up to an 86- by 96-inch load area. The patent-pending liftgate features a hydraulic platform openclose function, with a spring-assisted third section, and it can handle up to 5,500 pounds. It can be stowed at bed height or in fully raised position during transit.

BorgWarner — Delco Remy Smart Starter BorgWarner combined two of its existing technologies to create a smart starter that offers extra protection to reduce downtime. The Smart IMS (integrated magnetic switch) plus integrated over crank protection was launched on Delco Remy 38MT+ and 39MT heavy-duty gear reduction starters. IOCP – a built-in circuit breaker that protects the starter from thermal damage while also eliminating wiring harnesses – has been in service for many years. The Smart IMS, introduced to the aftermarket in 2017, ensures the solenoid receives the maximum available voltage by reducing voltage drop. Pairing these two technologies delivers extra layers of protection across a wide range of starting conditions, reducing damage due to excessive cranking, low battery voltage cranking issues, high circuit control resistance issues, starter click-no-crank, solenoid prolonged power, overruns, pinion and ring gear teeth damage, and more. It also encompasses driver/ system protection features, such as time-limited crank, running engine lockout, and autodisengage at engine start.

ERoad — Clarity Dashcam ERoad’s Clarity Dashcam can be used in front-facing or dual front/driver-facing modes and captures highdefinition video. The connected device sends 20-second video clips (10 seconds before and after the triggering event) back in real time when triggered by safety events or by the driver and is integrated with the ERoad fleet management solution. Clips are made available for review in a new video review center, MyERoad Replay, and are displayed with speed graphs and safety event data to make incident investigation easier. Each clip can be shared within the organization for review and training, and with third parties for incident investigation and resolution.

Mack Trucks — Command Steer The optional Mack Command Steer system is an advanced active steering system that adds an electric motor to the existing hydraulic steering system, reducing driver effort by up to 85%. Sensors mounted throughout the truck monitor road conditions, along with driver inputs and environmental elements, at a rate of more than 2,000 times per second. The electric motor then applies extra torque to the steering as required. Under normal conditions, Mack Command Steer helps to ease the driving experience in the face of potholes and other road irregularities, and drivers won’t have to fight the wheel on rough roads or in poor weather. At very slow speeds, it’s very easy to turn the wheel – a one-handed turn. As you go faster down the road it tightens up, so you get the road feel. Mack Command Steer also features a returnto-zero feature that automatically returns the steering wheel to the center position, helping with maneuvers in tight spaces.

Digging into TX-18 Details Kenworth gave reporters a sneak peek of the new TX18 during a preview of its new electric and hydrogen fuel cell trucks in Sunnyvale, California, in January. The event included a Kenworth T680 outfitted with a TX-18, which was available for brief drives in city traffic. The main launch for the new transmissions was handled by sister Paccar company Peterbilt a couple of weeks later at the Eaton Proving Grounds outside of Marshall, Michigan. The TX-18 was developed with Eaton. The TX-18 is designed for heavy-duty applications, with both versions rated up to 140,000 pounds GCWR, Kyle Crawford, vocational product manager for Peterbilt, said during the pre-drive briefing on the new transmissions. “So it’s designed for heavy-duty applications like off-highway construction, heavy-duty wreckers, and fleets that haul in mountainous terrain and need a little more power and performance to deal with those conditions.” Features include an extreme-duty clutch, an 1,850 lb-ft torque rating, plus six reverse gears for the extreme-duty TX-18 Pro. “Those six reverse gears on the TX-18 are combined with a standard dual power-takeoff (PTO),” Crawford added. “The PTO provides 75 to 160 horsepower and can be operated while driving. When combined with the TX-18’s six reverse gears, it makes it an excellent choice for rockspreading applications.” Additionally, Crawford said, the TX-18 design features a 47% reduction in parasitic losses and is 225 lbs. lighter than competitive automated transmissions on the market. It also features predictive cruise control, is fully integrated with current Paccar powertrain technology and systems, and can be programmed with four different applicationspecific calibrations to ensure peak performance in difficult applications.

ACMA Automechanika New Delhi 2024

T

he first post-pandemic edition in New Delhi to be staged in February 2024, will mark a key shift in the development of the event, supporting component advancements for shifting mobility trends as well as mark the start of its new cycle in even-numbered years. Poised to become the third largest automobile market by 2026, next only to China and the US, the Indian market holds strong potential and is a key growth market for global auto component brands. However, the disruptions and postponements caused by the pandemic has pushed forward the schedule of global automotive events. In alignment with the OICA calendar of global auto shows, the Auto Expo will be held every odd year from 2023 onwards. The Components Show held in tandem with the Motor Show will thus take place at the same time. “The shift to an even year cycle will ensure the industry has a common networking point every year and secures business continuity.” shared Mr Raj Manek, Executive Director and Board Member, Messe Frankfurt Asia Holdings Ltd, explaining the necessary change of timescale for the Indian edition of the renowned platform. “Despite the challenges, the automotive aftermarket has been resilient throughout the last two years and supporting the sector’s increased focus on deep-localisation will be a key goal of the first post-pandemic edition of ACMA Automechanika New Delhi.” added Mr Manek. Mr Vinnie Mehta, Director General – Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) said: “The automotive industry has maneuvered with great resilience

and fortitude the difficult times posed by the COVID pandemic. The Aftermarket through agility, has continued to maintain its vibrancy despite the challenges. With the changes in calendar of global auto shows and readjustment of the exhibition cycle to even years, I am sure that ACMA Automechanika New Delhi will continue to be a successful event and its legacy carried on.” The mobility and logistics industries are facing radical changes. With 40 trade fairs, conferences and other events worldwide, Messe Frankfurt showcases the current state of the art in the automotive aftermarket, transport and logistics sectors – and it shows where the future of mobility is headed. ACMA Automechanika New Delhi with its pure focus on the automotive aftermarket aims to highlight advancements in the components industry that will continue to lead the transformation in automotive space in the coming years.
