MOTHER-OF-PEARL DESERVES ITS PLACE IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Shimmering Star
With its iridescent sheen whose colours appear to change in the light, mother-of-pearl is a material that beguiles and intrigues. Also known as nacre, mother-of-pearl has much in common with the pearl after which it is named: both are created in nature by oysters and molluscs secreting nacre as a means of protection. While pearl forms within the shell, mother-of-pearl is the nacre found in the shell’s lining.
Over the centuries its appeal has never waned, with leading artisans, watchmakers and jewellers embracing it in their designs. Alluding to mother-of-pearl’s popularity in history, the CHANEL Coromandel jewellery collection features this shimmering material, recalling the traditional Asian inlaid lacquer screens that Gabrielle Chanel once collected for her apartment.
Its iridescence made mother-of-pearl the choice for the CHANEL Mademoiselle Privé watch dial. In a tour de force of artistry, the dial uses marquetry to form a Camellia fower design, involving all the segments being cut from the same piece of mother-of-pearl but placed in different directions. This results not only in each dial being unique but in amplifying the innate play of light and refections in the material itself.
The launch of the new TUDOR Royal collection in 2020 also saw the inclusion of one version with a mother-of-pearl dial and set with diamonds. Rolex also previously introduced its Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31, equipped with calibre 2236, in two notable versions featuring mother-of-pearl. One is offered in 18 ct white gold, ftted with a white mother-of-pearl dial and a diamond-set bezel, while a second is available in 18 ct Everose gold with a diamond-paved dial inlaid with pink mother-of-pearl butterfies. This second version omits the hour markers, leaving the stunning dial to be admired and for the mother-of-pearl inlay to shimmer amid the diamonds in all its breathtaking glory.
