THE QATAR-MENASA 2022 YEAR OF CULTURE CELEBRATES A DECADE OF GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS
A 10-year birthday deserves a special celebration and that’s exactly what’s planned for Qatar’s Year of Culture initiative, which marks a hugely successful decade of global partnerships in 2022.
For its milestone anniversary, Qatar has chosen to collaborate with an entire region, rather than partner an individual country as has been the tradition in previous years, in a move that promises to deliver an exceptionally rich and diverse programme of events and activities throughout the coming months.
A total of 26 countries from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia (MENASA) region, all of whom have embassies and communities in Doha, will participate in the exciting series of events planned for 2022. Attractions will include exhibitions, flms, literary events, culinary experiences, music, exchanges and more, with sport also expected to be a key theme, given Qatar’s role as host nation for the FIFA 2022 World Cup later this year.
Qatar teamed up with Japan for the launch edition of its Year of Culture in 2012 and, since then, has partnered with countries from across the continents. Now well established on the international cultural calendar, the initiative is overseen by Qatar Museums, with its Chairperson, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, playing a leading role. The Qatar-MENASA 2022 Year of Culture was offcially launched at an opening ceremony on March 3, held in the courtyard of the Fire Station and attended by Her Excellency, Lolwah Rashid Al-Khater, Assistant Foreign Minister of Qatar. High-profle representatives from Qatar and across the region, together with members of the public, were treated to two truly memorable evenings of entertainment that ranged from music and flm to gastronomic delights, with highlights including a performance by the renowned Qatari composer, singer and songwriter Dana Al Fardan.
Other exciting events that have followed range from a threeday, colourful community festival titled Passage to India, held in late March at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) Park, to #QatarCreates, an exchange for creatives held at the M7 hub in Msheireb Downtown. The end of the month, meanwhile, saw the opening of the groundbreaking 3-2-1 Qatar and Olympic Sports Museum at the Khalifa International Stadium.
This year’s extra-special Year of Culture is expected to culminate with an anniversary celebration in November acknowledging and celebrating the rich legacy that a decade of partnerships has produced. In the words of the organisers, “We believe when cultures connect, we create beautiful things. Here’s to many more years of connecting with old friends and friends to be.”
