Nature Triomphante

WHeRe HeRITAGe RADIATeS Presented for the first time outside Paris, Boucheron’s latest high jewellery collection is called 26 Vendôme after the address to which, in 1893, Frédéric Boucheron moved his famous salon (founded in 1858). Bold and contemporary, the new designs also reference the company’s vibrant past in a collection divided into three themes: Nature Triomphante, Architecture Inspirée and Porté Couture. 133

Nature has been a continuing inspiration for Boucheron and the Nature Triomphante theme is a celebration of this. At the Paris World Fair in 1900, for example, Boucheron exhibited a necklace called Chestnut Leaf composed of 13 large emeralds surrounded by a foliage of diamonds. In the current collection, and in much the same spirit, is the Lys Radiant, a lily-motif necklace of diamonds and rock crystals, while the Blé d’été set uses diamond paved ears of wheat in a new interpretation of the classic Boucheron question mark necklace (first designed in 1879). Birds and animals have long inspired Boucheron and the Animaux de Collection has a distinguished heritage: at the end of the 19th century, the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt repeatedly ordered replicas of her dogs, cats and birds, set on to rings and necklaces and adorned with dazzling stones - no small contribution to the growing demand for Boucheron’s animal-themed pieces. The present collection includes a deer in snowy diamonds or autumnal-coloured sapphires, a hawk, crowned with a 1.43-carat kite diamond ridge, and a geometric wolf set with yellow sapphires or white diamonds.

The Architecture Inspirée theme is a homage to both the building, the “hôtel particulier”, where Frédéric Boucheron started his business and to 26 Place Vendôme to which he later moved. The Hôtel Particulier necklace evokes the style of 152 Galerie de Valois - Boucheron’s first address. While it makes spectacular use of precious stones to recreate the graphic pattern of the house’s parquet flooring, its most intriguing aspect is the exquisite workmanship of its sculpted rock-crystal pendants that show a triptych of the vistas (comprised of hundreds of diamonds) seen through the house’s windows. The Place Vendôme-inspired pieces include a rock crystal bracelet that references the profile of that Parisian square and the surrounding arcades, and an engraved emerald-cut beryl that pays homage to the Place’s imposing central column, viewed from above.

The Porté Couture chapter is a marriage between high jewellery and the most elegant fashion. It uses art-deco motifs such as geometric bows and ribbons, and classic combinations of rubies or emeralds with diamonds and onyx. Frédéric Boucheron’s parents were both drapers, and this most probably inspired him to create fluidity with precious metals – an idea which is echoed in the beautiful, scarf-like pleats of the Plissé Diamants necklace. Both this piece and the extraordinary Cape de Lumière owe a good deal in inspiration to a commission Boucheron made for the exiled Russian nobleman Grand-Duke Wladimir, who wanted a gold necklace that could mimic the suppleness of a scarf. This piece of history is reflected in the standout item of the Porté Couture chapter; the astonishing Cape de Lumière. The Cape de Lumière is a feat of exquisite engineering: a golden frame is strung with gold chain; sections are paved with white diamonds; the peacock-feather motif is a stylised, art-deco one and there is a huge, 81-carat citrine suspended from the front. The Cape de Lumière is designed to be adjusted to the person who wears it. In all, the 26 Vendôme collection is a fusion of the splendour of Boucheron’s past with its spectacular contemporary creativity.

‫ّ‬ ‫شكلت مصدر‬ ‫تحتفي مجموعة «ناتور تريونفونت» بالطبيعة التي لطالما‬ ‫اإللهام عند «بوشرون»‪ .‬ففي «معرض باريس العالمي» الذي أقيم في العام‬ ‫‪ ،١٩٠٠‬مثالً‪ ،‬عرضت «بوشرون» عقد «تشستنات ليف» المؤلّف من ‪ ١٣‬حبّة زم ّرد‬ ‫ضخمة تحيط بها أوراق من األلماس‪ .‬أ ّما المجموعة الجديدة‪ ،‬التي تنضح‬ ‫بال ّروح ذاتها‪ ،‬فتتباهى بعقد «ليس راديينت» المم ّيز بنمط زهرة الزنبق‬ ‫والمرصع باأللماس وأحجار الكريستال‪ ،‬في حين تعيد «بلي ديتيه» ابتكار قالدة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ص ّممت للم ّرة األولى عام‬ ‫عالمة االستفهام الشهيرة من العالمة التجارية (التي ُ‬ ‫‪ )١٨٧٩‬مع سنابل قمح متقنة من األلماس‪.‬‬ ‫منذ وقت طويل و «بوشرون» تستوحي من عالم الطيور والحيوانات‪ ،‬كما في‬ ‫مجموعة «أنيمو دو كولكسيون» التي تنطبع بإرث خاص‪ :‬ففي نهاية القرن‬ ‫التاسع عشر‪ ،‬كانت الممثلة الشهيرة «سارة برنار» تطلب بشكل دائم تنفيذ‬ ‫نسخات عن كلبها وه ّرتها وطيورها على شكل خواتم وقالدات مزخرفة‬ ‫بأحجار مبهرة – وهو جزء بسيط من ابتكارات «بوشرون» التي تحمل أنماط‬ ‫مرصع بأحجار األلماس البيضاء‬ ‫الحيوانات‪ .‬في المجموعة الجديدة‪ ،‬يتألّق غزال‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫كالثلج أو بالزفير بألوان الخريف‪ ،‬إلى جانب صقر تُت ّوجه سلسلة من األلماس‬ ‫مرصع بأحجار الزفير باللون األصفر أو األلماس‬ ‫بزنة ‪ ١،٤٣‬قيراط وذئب هندسي ّ‬ ‫األبيض‪.‬‬ ‫‪129‬‬

Striking in its graphic purity, timeless in its elegance, the Quatre collection continues to shine as a signature contemporary Boucheron collection. Since first launching in 2004, continual reinvention through the years in terms of colours and materials has increased the myriad choices of how to wear Quatre to suit individual tastes. The latest launches in 2016 were no exception with 12 new creations adding to the Quatre repertoire. At the heart of Quatre’s raison d’etre are four distinct motifs - the codes of Double Godron,

Mirror Setting, Grosgrain and Clou de Paris - each evoking a theme dear to the heart of the Maison. In 2016 Boucheron placed the spotlight on two of these codes, the Grosgrain and Clou de Paris, offering rings and bracelets that, while they deconstruct the four elements, create, according to Boucheron, “a better representation of the codes”. The Grosgrain code is distinctive for its vertical ribbing, reminiscent of the ribbon it is named after, and paying tribute to the family of founder Frédéric Boucheron, whose drapery business instilled in him a sense of delicacy of creation.

The Clou de Paris was conceived to evoke the cobblestones of the Place Vendôme, the Parisian location where Boucheron was the first to open a jewellery house more than 120 years ago. Placed alone or together, the choice is up to the wearer, but ensures that personal style becomes entwined with poetic symbols of the Place Vendôme’s first jeweller and of Paris, the City of Light, where it continues to shine on.

Why Boucheron loves question marks…

On October 22nd 1934, two exhausted airmen landed on a racecourse in Melbourne, surrounded by cheering crowds. Flying a specially-built De Havilland Comet DH-88, Charles Scott and Tom Campbell Black set a new record, flying the 11,000 miles from England in just 71 hours. The Bremont DH-88 commemorates their aircraft and their achievement. Containing actual material from the record-breaking plane, the Bremont DH-88 is available now in a strictly limited edition. But it won’t be available for long.

The Point d’Interrogration necklace has become an iconic Boucheron piece reinterpreted through the years. Its name, meaning question mark, is inspired by its shape, designed to curl around the neck, and which, remarkably, stays put thanks thanks to a hidden spring system, without the need for a clasp. Highly innovative, the Point d’Interrogation necklace was designed in 1879 and displayed at the universal Exhibition of 1889, where it was considered revolutionary and helped earn Frédéric Boucheron the exhibition’s grand prize.

Pearls had many perils… Qatar’s heritage is intrinsically linked with pearl diving, but the activity itself was highly risky with rare rewards. Divers themselves had huge stones attached to their ankles to pull them to the seabed; death could result from an ill-timed pull on the return rope. For every 5,000 oysters on the seabed, only three would be likely to harbour a pearl, of which only one would be of value.

The resolutely British watch brand has a certain French twist to its tale. Founders and aviation fans Nick and Giles English were flying across France in a vintage plane when they were forced to make an emergency landing. By chance a farmer took them in and housed their aircraft in his barn – coincidentally he had been an airline pilot in the war and was a talented clock repairer. The brothers rewarded his hospitality by naming their eventual watch company after him.

Tudor began life as a line of watches conceived by the founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf. He had launched the Rolex company in 1905 and 41 years later brought Tudor to the world. Before settling on a name for this new brand, he contemplated several ideas, including his own name. Early examples of such watches bearing his name exist in rare quantities and are highly collectible.

Her idea of mixing real jewels with imitations proved popular with wealthy clients, and took costume jewellery away from its association with limited finances to being something that was highly desirable.

Beyond time Horology meets gemology with breathtaking results.

When timekeeping began to be wearable back in the 16th century, items were more akin to jewellery than accurate measurers of hours or minutes. What they looked like was important, and often resembled figural objects, such as animals, flowers, or even stars. in the modern world of today, a full five centuries later, this early blend of horology and decorative art has been honed to awe-inspiring levels, where precision timekeeping is combined with masterful gem-setting techniques to create veritable works of art. For master jeweller Boucheron, which presented its first timepiece in 1859, it’s a combination that renders each watch “an invitation to dream”. over the decades the maison has crafted many stunning examples, each unique in its own way but all serving to illustrate this dream-like quality. the Cypris tourbillon, for example, is not only an amazing feat of timekeeping (so impressive its mechanism is fully visible through the dial) but its depiction of a graceful swan is created using 700 pavé-set, round-cut diamonds and 100 blue sapphire crystals, while the beak is set with onyx and orange crystal. the heritage of Boucheron is long entwined with jewelled art that references the animal kingdom. in the Cristal de Lune timepiece, a diamond-studded peacock appears with a pearly moon set inside a rock crystal dome, in a fantastical, three dimensional work of art. A total of 957 baguette and round diamonds were used to create this masterpiece in white gold, including a diamond at the centre of the dial and pavé diamonds on the reverse. the detachable pavé diamond tassel can be worn as a pendant on a white gold chain that comes with the watch, thus transforming the Cristal de Lune into a truly versatile piece. the same

is true of the Reflet Pompon in white gold and set with diamonds; the Pompon style of tassel has been appearing in Boucheron collections for more than a century, and here can be removed and worn as a pendant too. Carrying off the prestigious Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève award for best jewellery watch in 2016 was an honour allotted to the Secret Watch “Signature Grenat” by CHAneL. the unique creation, which took 600 hours of craftsmanship, blends a stunning articulated cuff bracelet in 18kt white gold set with more than a thousand diamonds, as well as garnets and sapphires. Cleverly, the shape of the stunning central 52.61 carat carmine garnet allows for the time to be read through the stone without it even being lifted. Joining the Les eternelles collection in 2016, the Signature Sapphire is another secret watch, this time inspired by the iconic CHAneL matelassé pattern, and featuring a rare cushion-cut 17.2 carat sapphire at its centre, with 61 carats of diamonds across the watch. the influence of another CHAneL emblem is expressed beautifully in the Les Blés de CHAneL collection, where the wheat motif (reminiscent of founder Gabrielle Chanel’s childhood surroundings) is embodied in the moisson d’or watch, set with hundreds of diamonds and sapphire beads. throughout the world of high jewellery timepieces rarity is a key inspiration. Although every H. moser & Cie. watch carries a cachet of exclusivity with only 1,200 pieces a year produced, it doesn’t get any rarer than the unique gem-set Venturer tourbillon. in line with its heritage, every H. moser & Cie. watch is assembled and finished by

hand, but in the case of the Venturer tourbillon, this artisanal process is elevated and compared to that of Renaissance painters, skillfully applying and blending shades of colour, or in this case, selecting and setting the most stunning sapphires according to their nuances of colour to dazzling effect. With the addition of gems, the fumé dial, integral to the H. moser & Cie. identity, is given a shimmering reinterpretation. on the bezel, folding buckle, crown, lugs and sides of the case, diamonds of various sizes highlight the unusual shapes in the case profile that are so dear to H. moser & Cie.. At Rolex, a name synonymous with excellence the world over, gem-setting is naturally elevated to the extraordinary. it is no surprise that the Swiss brand’s fastidiousness for detail is keenly overseen through the in-house gemology laboratory, and by its experienced gem specialists and setters. the gem-set versions of the oyster Perpetual datejust Pearlmaster 34 are yet another tribute paid by Rolex to the art of watchmaking jewellery. in this incarnation 18kt gold is combined with the purest, most scintillating of diamonds that completely pave the dial. the bezel, available in a choice of adorned with brilliant-cut diamonds, or baguette-cut blue or pink sapphires, further accentuates the splendour. the precise alignment of the height of the gems, their orientation and position, the robustness, the regularity and aesthetics of the setting, as well as the finishing are all indicators of excellence in the making. As all of these examples show, when gems meet timekeeping in expert hands, the result is always an experience of exceptionally rare emotions.

Joined by her two daughters, this powerful trio of women continues to take the brand to ever greater heights. We asked them to share some secrets of their success. You have spent many years exploring world cultures in relation to your passion for jewellery. What have been the greatest revelations along the way, and what has inspired you? Drawing inspiration from world cultures, and my home country - Egypt, with its rich and deep-rooted heritage is at the heart of our design philosophy and DNA ever since I set out in 1969. Travelling, visiting exhibitions and museums are some of the research tools we utilise at our design house.

Why do you think your jewellery particularly resonates with Qatari women?

Head Designer Amina Ghali

What are the greatest aspects of having your daughters Amina and Fatma working with you? I consider myself very lucky to have a business that allows each of my daughters to do what they love, and to have them carry on the legacy of Azza Fahmy Jewellery. They have succeeded in taking the brand’s vision further on creative and business fronts while staying true to our core values and design philosophy, which is something I very much admire. Amina, my youngest, is my design protégé and is currently being groomed into becoming the next Creative Director. She brings a contemporary edge to the brand, adding to our research and design methods as she currently works with trend forecasters and stylists in London. We constantly feed off each other’s inspirations and designs. Fatma, my eldest, is the Managing Director. She passionately continues to expand the brand’s global, regional and online presence.

How does it feel to design alongside your mother? My mother is my role model, we have been working together in partnership for the last 10 years so naturally both our inspirations and ideas influenced one another over time.

What are you current favourite pieces or collections and why? I couldn’t just choose one! In every collection I have a favourite piece; my favourite in my latest collection would be the Nature Hoopoe Collar, it took an extreme amount of effort and thought. It is exactly how I would imagine nature to look like if it grew on people. Managing Director Fatma Ghaly

What are the elements of Azza Fahmy that make it stand out on the international stage? We place a lot of value on our global collaborations and long-term partnerships. International collaborations have been part of Azza Fahmy Jewellery since the early 2000s, ever since we set out for London Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week with renowned designers like Julien Macdonald, Preen, and recently Matthew Williamson.

Further to fashion collaborations, as a brand that celebrates world cultures, we also embark on cultural collaborations, two of which were Bespoke collections for the British Museum.

What is your strategy for where the brand is heading? Our focus is on international expansion. Naturally, our shift and directions are towards growing our online presence and using it as a main channel.

You returned to the Qatari market earlier this year with a new partner in Fifty One East. What guided your decision-making in choosing the store and how important is it to you to have Azza Fahmy in Qatar? Qatar is a very important market for Azza Fahmy Jewellery. We have had very loyal

Qatari clients since a long time, so it was definitely important for us to be available to them there. The choice for us joining Fifty One East was an easy one, which comes out of respect of how they represent their brands.

The brand has recently launched its school, the Design School by Azza Fahmy. Can you tell us how you see its role and how you measure its success? When my mother first set out, there were no resources in Egypt that could help her achieve her dream, she had to travel abroad to expand on her education. We have always believed in the region’s talent and potential, that is why in 2013, Azza Fahmy Jewellery collaborated with Alchimia, Contemporary Design School of Florence, Italy to create the first educational design institute of its kind in the Middle East ‘The Design Studio by Azza Fahmy’. The school aims to equip potential jewellery designers with the know-how to compete internationally.

‫كيف تشعرين في العمل إلى جانب والدتك؟‬ ‫إن والدتي هي قدوتي في الحياة‪ .‬نعمل معاً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫منذ عشر سنوات‪ ،‬لذا كان من الطبيعي أن نتأثّر‬ ‫ببعضنا ونتبادل األفكار على م ّر السنين‪.‬‬

With watch collecting growing in popularity, knowing where to begin is essential.

In recent years acquisitions of watches at auction have on occasion made headline news. It’s no real surprise that collecting has grown in popularity, considering the way the online world has powered news sharing and connected like-minded people that share a passion. If the wealth of blogs, sites and forums dedicated to watch collectors is not proof alone of this phenomenon, the figures themselves also paint a clear picture. To take one illustrative example, in 2005 a 1949 Rolex Oyster Perpetual model with a cloisonné enamel dial fetched $83,237 at auction; in 2015, ten years on from that sale, it sold for $1,242,040. The ability to fetch spectacular prices is not the preserve of Rolex alone, nor is it related to the age of a watch. In 2015 one TUDOR

model, a unique example of the Heritage Black Bay One, set a new price record for a TUDOR watch at public auction. Sold for 375,000 Swiss francs, the lot ended up reaching a price that was 100 times its presale estimate. Of course not every vintage watch can expect such fortuitous rises in value; generally speaking, the more unique an item, the greater the possibility that its value may increase. Vintage Rolex collectors, for example, often seek out examples with very rare dials that set them apart from models in the same series. Regardless of uniqueness, a TUDOR watch and any of the lower entry Rolex models represent a good starting place for a beginner collector looking to make a modest investment that may hold its value. Obviously, one of the advantages

of investing in a mechanical watch is that, unlike a piece of technology such as a smartwatch, it is immune from becoming obsolete. In contrast, though, a mechanical watch does need to be maintained by certified professionals to preserve its value. Doing so will help safeguard it for generations to come. Beyond investing in a brand with a solid international reputation, the real decision-making should be linked to personal taste. Ultimately, a watch should be bought to be enjoyed more than its potential to rise in value. Taking time to try out different models and getting a feel for how they look when worn is highly recommended. After all, a watch is designed first and foremost for wearing, and any return on investment at a later date should be seen as a plus.

Making history on your wrist The Bremont DH-88 celebrates one of aviation’s greatest adventures.

British watchmaker Bremont has consistently released outstanding wristwatches, most with aviation overtones, and always with a fascinating story attached. The Bremont DH-88 is certainly no exception, crafted as a celebration of the 1934 MacRobertson Air Race, considered the greatest air race of all time. The watch pays homage to the race-winning de Havilland Comet “Grosvenor House” that made the 11,000-mile journey from Mildenhall, England, to Melbourne, Australia, in a record-breaking 70 hours, 55 minutes - a record that stood until 2010. The airplane’s two British pilots battled exhaustion and mechanical problems to fly the pioneering racing aircraft to victory. Like every timepiece that carries the Bremont name, the DH-88 has been

constructed to ensure durability and precision. Inside, some impressive engineering is at work, including a Calibre 13 1/4 inch BE-54AE automatic chronometer and the guarantee of a 42-hour power reserve. As a tribute to a phenomenal moment in history, the watch’s aesthetics are fittingly vintage-inspired, featuring a classic serif numeral dial and oversized crown. Bremont has also ensured that each DH-88 is a piece of history in itself, with some of the spruce plywood used in the original 1934 de Havilland Comet integrated into the design. Naturally, this makes the DH-88 a highly coveted item, and destined to grace the wrists of only a select few: the stainless-steel edition is limited to 282 pieces, and a rose-gold version exclusively crafted in 82 pieces.

To maintain its allure, jewellery should be given the greatest care. Jewellery and timepieces are often among an individual’s most treasured possessions, for sentimental reasons as much as for investment value. Made from valuable gemstones and precious metals, these crafted works of art require specific care to ensure their innate beauty shines on through the years. How and when they are worn is as important as their storage and servicing. It may be widely known, for example, that beauty products, such as perfume, body cream or hairspray have the ability to degrade gems, and this is why it is advisable to wear jewellery as the very last step when dressing before an occasion. Yet it is not just products that pose risks, as even light, heat and perspiration can take their toll over time by weakening gems or changing their colour. Some stones are particularly sensitive in this regard, and these include emerald, amethyst, topaz and pearl. As a porous gem, pearl is particularly delicate and may dry out in heat, causing cracking and discolouration; the softness of this organic material also means it is easily scratched. 51

Precious metals require care just as much as gems do. To keep silver and gold at their best, for example, a simple, regular polishing with a soft cloth will help preserve and prolong their shine. Worth noting is that the more silver jewellery is worn, the less likely it is to tarnish. With all jewellery, it can be helpful to refer to special instructions from the brand itself. Pandora, whose products include sterling and plated silver items as well as gold, advises wiping with a soft clean cloth for silver plated jewellery but cautions that silver polishing liquids or silver dips should be avoided as they can destroy the oxidised details. The latest model to join the Pelagos collection of divers’ watches, the Pelagos LHD, not only takes its wearer on a journey back into TUDOR’s rich history but also serves up some interesting firsts. The LHD stands for Left Hand Drive, and indicates the watch’s purpose as a left-handed version with its winding stem located on the left of the middle case so that it can be worn on the right wrist. Such a feature was first introduced by TUDOR many years ago when producing professional level divers’ watches for, among others, the French Navy. Its revival in the Pelagos LHD is distinguished by each model bearing a unique number as part of a series – the first time TUDOR has made such a move. Building on its 2015 introduction of in-house manufactured mechanical movements, TUDOR has equipped the Pelagos LHD with a movement specifically developed for this model, displaying hours, minutes and seconds functions with an impressive 70-hour power reserve. A reworked Pelagos dial in black has a number of distinguishing features, including its numerals displayed in alternate colours, snowflake hands, and creamcoloured luminescent markings matching that of its bezel for greater legibility in the dark. A return to reign The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Air-King perpetuates aeronautical heritage with distinction.

Although the Rolex Air-King has been in existence for many decades, it was 2016 that made this particular model headline news. In a clever reinvention with a wealth of new features, the Rolex Air-King sealed its status as a major talking point in the watch community. Rolex’s privileged ties with the world of aviation are many and date back to pioneering days. It was a Rolex Oyster, for example, that was worn by members of the Houston Expedition in the 1930s taking the first flight above Mount Everest at an altitude exceeding 10,000 metres in extreme weather. In its new incarnation, the Air-King pays homage to this rich history of daring aeronautical feats. The most striking visual difference to the Air-King’s predecessors is its much larger 40mm case along with its black dial that features a number of interesting developments. This is the first Rolex, for example, to have a crown and signature in two different colours of yellow and green. There’s also a Chromalight luminous triangle marker at 12 and white gold Mercedes hands. In tribute to its origins, the name Air-King is written using the same lettering that was designed especially for the model in the 1950s. Bold on the outside but also fearless on the inside, the Air-King now houses a Rolex calibre 3131 movement featuring Rolex’s patented anti-magnetic Parachrom hairspring. Protection comes from the Oyster case, waterproof to 100 metres with a hermetically screwed-down case back that requires special tools so that only Rolex watchmakers can access the movement. This is a watch designed to stand up to the rigours encountered by serious aviators, but also one that stands out from the crowd and appeals to those in search of a Rolex with a difference.

Until then watches had to be manually wound by hand, an act that involved unscrewing the crown of the watch thus compromising its water resistance. With the Perpetual rotor, watches became automatically wound through wrist movements alone, and the precursor of contemporary self-winding systems was born. The DaTejusT Today we take for granted that a watch can display the date as well as tell the time, but this particular innovation appeared in 1945, when Rolex was launching watches so prestigious they were worn by influential people around the world. The Datejust was the name given to the invention, the first self-winding wrist chronometer to show the date in a window on the dial. The Jubilee bracelet was created for the Datejust and the timepiece became the pillar of the Oyster collection.

The emergence of professional watches from Rolex was driven by the desire to offer dedicated functions for specific, often highly adventurous, activities. The Oyster Perpetual Submariner, aimed at serious divers, was first launched in 1953, initially offering guaranteed waterproofing to a depth of 100 metres - the first watch to ever do so. This pioneering standard was later increased to 200 metres in the same year.

The rOlex Deepsea The pioneering approach of Rolex to waterproofing was taken ever further in 2008 with the launch of the Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea, waterproof to the extreme depth of 3,900 metres. Impressive Rolex engineering went into this horological marvel, including a new case architecture, the Ringlock System. Importantly, the bracelet features a Rolex Glidelock clasp, a patented system for adjusting the bracelet length and that allows the watch to be worn over a diving suit. The Rolex Deepsea also contributed to a world record, with an experimental version, the Deepsea Challenge, surviving the deepest solo submersible dive ever undertaken.

It used‬‬ ‫‪an ingenious system of a screw-down bezel,‬‬ ‫‪case back and winding crown, keeping the‬‬ ‫‪case hermetically sealed to protect the‬‬ ‫‪movement. Ninety years have passed since‬‬ ‫‪the Oyster case’s invention, and while the‬‬ ‫‪bezel is no longer screwed-down, some‬‬ ‫‪models still feature a fluted design - part‬‬ ‫‪of the Oyster’s visual identity - in tribute to‬‬ ‫‪the original model.‬‬

A ClAss of its own The Rolex Cellini perfects the art of the dress watch.

Elegant time-telling is at the heart of the Rolex Cellini, with the aim of capturing the beauty of the present moment purely and simply. Many other Rolex models strike an adventurous chord through their associations with racing, diving, piloting and daring pursuits. The Cellini, with its understated elegance, remains a Rolex dress watch par excellence. Before thoughts turn to brands or types of watches, there are fundamental questions to consider for the first-time buyer. How often do they plan on wearing the watch, for example, and in which kind of environments? With the answers to these in mind, it’s time to weigh up a few more points. What’s on the inside One important point to consider is the movement inside the watch, the part responsible for making it work. There are two distinct choices: quartz, which is powered by a battery and highly accurate, or a mechanical movement, which can be either hand-wound or automatic. As the name suggests, a hand-wound movement relies on the wearer to wind it regularly to make it work, while an automatic movement is wound simply through the movement created while on the wearer’s wrist. With a mechanical movement, a key detail is how long the watch retains power once it is removed and not worn.

Traditional versus smartwatch With the advent of smartwatches in recent years, many have raised the question of whether their popularity could one day outshine that of traditional timepieces. So far, the answer seems to be a firm no. In a calculated move to illustrate this point, luxury Swiss watchmakers H. Moser & Cie. launched a campaign introducing “The Original Smartwatch”, explaining the company had been producing it for more than 100 years. Features such as a clean interface (no need to finger zoom to check the date), ease of use and up to 10 days autonomy (with no need to plug it in to charge) were highlighted to contrast, with wry humour, just why a traditional timepiece such as the Endeavour Perpetual Calendar could also be deemed smart. Ultimately, though, it comes down to personal choice and the wearer’s needs in terms of functionality. The recently released Apple Watch Series 2, for example, introduced built-in GPS; bearing in mind their seamless digital connectivity, smartwatches, such as Apple’s, are ensured of popularity among those looking for hi-tech versatility.
