In an exclusive interview, Georgina Chapman, founder and creative director of Marchesa, talks about her life-long passion for fashion
What inspired you to become a fashion designer, and how did you get your start in the industry?
Even from a young age I was always very interested in fashion. As a child, I loved to visit the costume department at the Victoria & Albert Museum and spend my time poring over magazines. During my teenage years, I started experimenting with clothes and creating my own garments. I carried my passion into college, when I attended art school to study costume design. The concept of escapism in costume and the historical aspects of fashion always intrigued me.
Marchesa is known for its feminine and romantic aesthetic. Can you tell us about your creative process and where you draw inspiration for your collections?
I find inspiration can be evoked in me by so many things such as travel, literature and art. It’s different every season depending on what I and the team feel strongly about. Once we have a theme that we like, we start building a story around it. We use large-scale mood boards, cutting and pasting visual references together to create a cohesive concept.
What do you think sets Marchesa apart from other high-end fashion labels? And what would you say are the brand qualities that resonate with your Qatari clientele?
Marchesa Couture is unapologetically romantic, confident, ultra-feminine and whimsical. We tell stories with our dresses; dreamy – shrouded in fantasy with a vibrant, bold energy. We know our Qatari women appreciate Marchesa’s DNA to make a woman feel her most beautiful and special.
You've been in the fashion industry for over a decade now. What are some of the biggest changes you've seen in the industry, and how have you adapted to them?
“Fast fashion” is one of the largest changes I have witnessed in the industry, but we stay true to our core values and create timeless pieces that women can appreciate for a lifetime and pass down generationally.
How do you approach your bridal collections – what are the mainstays for you?
Having the opportunity to be a part of the most important day in a woman’s life is truly an honour. Every Marchesa Bridal Couture gown is telling a unique story, they are created with intimate attention to detail and the highest quality – both in terms of design and construction. We make sure our brides feel beautiful, supported and comfortable on their big day. Our collections offer something for every bride, from pure luxury and opulence to sophisticated and sleek – always with our DNA at the heart of the matter; romantic 3D details, gorgeous embroidery, delicate laces and unique details. We also create a lot of one-of-a-kind, true Couture Bridal, when we get to design something together with the bride, which is a wonderful experience – but the same love and attention goes into all of our bridal endeavours.
What can you tell us about the importance of fabric and craftsmanship for Marchesa Bridal?
We use the finest qualities and our very best talent when creating Marchesa Bridal Couture, as we do with all our Couture collections. Our brides deserve and expect only the very best, and we are committed to giving them that. The team here in New York is constantly working towards improving our process – from concept to finished product – always looking for new techniques and materials. Craftsmanship is at the core of every step since we are looking at each part of the process through a couture lens.
What's next for you and for Marchesa? Can you give us a sneak peek into any upcoming projects or collaborations?
I am so thrilled about our new daywear line, Marchesa Rosa. It gives us the opportunity to dress the Marchesa woman with luxury and ease in everyday dresses at an accessible price point.

Perfetto from bean to cup
On his latest visit to Qatar, De'Longhi CEO, Fabio De'Longhi, shared with Latitude how delivering the true coffee experience has propelled the Italian firm to global renown.
De’Longhi is approaching its 50th anniversary. What has powered this success?
My family started its activity at the beginning of the 1970s, when my father jumped into the production of oilfilled radiators, which achieved massive success. In the following years, the company expanded the product range and presence within the small domestic appliance sector, such as entering the portable air conditioning category, launching the bestselling Pinguino and also acquiring Kenwood, one of the brand leaders in the household food preparation business.
The Group has gradually become a globally recognised player in the industry and it has acquired a leadership position in the sector of coffeemakers, thanks to strong organic growth and an effective innovation strategy. These results were obtained through our strong commitment to innovation, the chase for new markets, the focus on some iconic brands and the dedication of our employees, which allowed us to build a strong group identity.
When consumers hear the name De'Longhi, what should be the key words that they associate with this brand?
I would say innovation, premium-ness, reliable products and last but not least our solid values. Since the start of our journey, the Group has been working to stay ahead of the pack thanks to cutting-edge technology and design, which over the course of time have become the distinct characteristics of our brands. These elements have favoured the improving perception of our products as rock-solid, stylish and established as part of the everyday lifestyle. Finally, yet importantly, my role as CEO and member of the family is to uphold the firm’s core values, which in the last few decades have been the reference point for any strategic decisions related to products and brands.
De’Longhi is particularly known for its coffee machines. What sets De’Longhi apart from the competition in this market?
During the last two decades, we were able to become the absolute leader in the business of espresso coffee machines for households, pioneering in this market thanks to our passion and vocation to innovate. We invested in production capacity and research and development competences, internalising a valuable know-how, and we developed an extensive product offer, ranging from the so-called “bean to cup” automatic machines to the partnership with Nespresso, hence playing a major role in expanding the espresso market across the world. All this has brought us to launch the recent successful global campaign, starring Brad Pitt as ambassador, with the aim to reinforce our brand as the authority in the coffee space.
How does De'Longhi strive to make the perfect cup of coffee?
As I mentioned before, coffee has had a significant role in our success story. We became the global leader in the espresso maker segment, developing and improving a unique know-how and set of competences in this space and consequently allowing us to “innovate as a leader”. Innovation is an essential part of our DNA and has been inspiring everyday aspects of our activities, from production processes to product design, ultimately driven by our passion. Just to give you more colour, the total research and development expenditure at Group level was more than €70 million in 2022 alone. People around the world love coffee and we, as Italians, know very well how a good coffee must taste. But this is not enough to be successful. We continuously think out of the box, as witnessed by all the activities recently done with sensorial specialists to further work on the perfect cup of coffee.
What can you tell us about consumer trends of today?
Melbourne and Seattle have been the pioneers of new trends and tastes in coffee, with lots of local roasters popping up and expanding across the world, supported by increasing consumer demand. The average quality of the coffee drinks at home has dramatically improved over the last few decades and consumers have become more sophisticated, buying technologically advanced machines and specialty coffee. In order to chase these new trends, in 2020 we launched the “Bean Adapt Technology”, an algorithm that automatically adjusts the machine settings according to the coffee bean chosen by the user.
And what do you anticipate in the future?
I’m seeing lot of hype and new trends in many markets and I believe that the coffee story has just started. Today consumers are used to choosing from among a wide range of beverages, like an espresso, a cappuccino or a cold coffee. Someone takes a coffee as a moment of relaxation, others as a way to socialise; in both cases we are proud of being part of the experience.
Today's consumers are increasingly interested in sustainability. How does De'Longhi take action in this regard?
Sustainability has become a hot topic for consumers, employees, investors and every corporate’s stakeholder. The Group manufactures products that are perceived as enablers of a sustainable lifestyle and responsible behaviour. Moreover, over the years we have implemented the best practices in sustainable manufacturing. I’m personally involved in shaping the Group's strategy, in order to undertake a structured path of gradual and significant integration of sustainability into our business model.
De'Longhi is a global company. What are some of the challenges and opportunities of operating in different countries?
The Group covers more than 120 countries, thanks to over 30 subsidiaries and strong relationships with retailers and distributors across the world. Clearly, the challenge in managing a global coverage is that every market has different consumer dynamics, but on the other hand, we can also exploit the opportunity to scale up our size, benefitting from economies of scale.
What insights can you share in relation to the market in Qatar?
Qatar is a fast-growing country that has been able to open its market to the new global trends, while keeping its traditions alive at the same time. A clear and successful
example was the World Cup that showed the country’s willingness and desire to catch all the opportunities related to the new “glocal” trends in food and lifestyle. I had the chance to attend the tournament’s final and I still carry with me the memories of that night.
We are proud of being one of the players that have been working to expand the small domestic appliances market, thanks to the fruitful collaboration and strong commitment of our partner Modern Home, a member of Darwish Holding.
Can you tell us about other key brands in the De'Longhi group? How do these fit with the brand strategy and philosophy?
Today, De’Longhi is a global company competing in several areas, various categories and engaging with different consumer targets. This is the reason why we rely on some well-known brands. Specifically, Kenwood, which joined the Group in 2001 and is one of the most loved and admired brands in food preparation; finally, Ariete offers innovative design solutions in the cooking and home care segments in some selected markets.
Finally, can you describe your perfect cup of De'Longhi coffee?
My favourite cup of coffee is a double espresso that I can make at home thanks to my De’Longhi Dinamica Plus.
A new face for a timeless icon
CHANEL selects Whitney Peak as the embodiment of COCO MADEMOISELLE
A new and exciting era for CHANEL’s COCO MADEMOISELLE perfume has arrived with the choice of Whitney Peak, the talented actress of Gossip Girl fame, selected as its new face. In a striking parallel to Gabrielle Chanel's own journey, Peak embodies the same fearless spirit that made the CHANEL founder an icon. After growing up in Uganda, Peak moved to Canada, where she pursued her dream of acting despite lacking any prior connections or experience. Similarly, Chanel, who was raised in an orphanage, defied the conventions of her time by cultivating a different type of femininity, one that went against the status quo. Peak admires Gabrielle Chanel's independent spirit, which she shares. For her, the freedom to embrace and celebrate exactly who you are, no matter where you are in your journey, is something to be passionate about. With her talent and determination, Peak is the perfect modern-day embodiment of the young Gabrielle Chanel, and the perfect fit for CHANEL’s iconic perfume COCO MADEMOISELLE.
In the following interview, Olivier Polge, CHANEL's in-house perfumer-creator, shares more on what makes COCO MADEMOISELLE an eternally stylish fragrance and how Whitney Peak embodies its essence.
How would you describe the composition of the COCO MADEMOISELLE fragrance?
At CHANEL, we create fragrances based on ideas and visions. COCO MADEMOISELLE reflects this ethos, which translates to a certain abstract quality that goes beyond a list of ingredients. COCO MADEMOISELLE reveals the scent of a bold, free woman, combining the brightness of vibrant, sparkling citrus with a sensual, modern patchouli note that has been fractionated and refined. Soft jasmine and rose accords lie at the heart of the fragrance.
Tell us about the fractionated patchouli that makes COCO MADEMOISELLE so unique.
Patchouli is a very important and distinctive element of COCO MADEMOISELLE. This particular patchouli is fractionated using a technique that was developed by CHANEL and that revolutionised the way fragrance is created. It allows us to refine the raw material so that only the purest fractions remain. This lends it an elegant, sophisticated feel.
What makes COCO MADEMOISELLE so special and timeless?
When it was first released, COCO MADEMOISELLE defied convention in a way that was ahead of its time. In the early 2000s, when fresh and light fragrances were very much in style, COCO MADEMOISELLE brought more intense scents back into fashion. Its abstract nature has enabled it to transcend the era in which it was created, like all CHANEL fragrances. COCO MADEMOISELLE is not the expression of a single ingredient, but rather of a style. And as Gabrielle Chanel said: “Fashion goes out of fashion. Style never.”
How would you describe COCO MADEMOISELLE to someone who has never smelled it before?
It can be difficult to put a scent into words. When I smell COCO MADEMOISELLE, there is something vibrant about it. It evokes a feeling of effervescence. It makes me think of a young woman who is expressing herself freely, moving as if wind was blowing around her. To me, it always feels full of life and energy.
In your opinion, what role does fragrance play in our everyday lives?
Fragrance has an extraordinary ability to evoke things in people and recall memories from their lives; it’s one of
the aspects of my job that I enjoy most. Fragrance reaches us on a very intimate level, and I think that is what makes it so powerful. I often hear extremely personal stories about cities people lived in, memories of loved ones—we have so many anecdotes about fragrances. We tend to personify them. Fragrance is a connection to the world around us, a way of portraying ourselves to the world; it expresses our personality just like the clothes we wear or our mannerisms. Fragrance reveals yet another facet, something that cannot be conveyed any other way.
What words come to mind to describe Whitney Peak?
Whitney is a free-spirited, joyful young woman as well as a very talented actress. She is the embodiment of COCO MADEMOISELLE.

This season, fashion is inspired by high drama with the party mood in full swing
A celebratory mood reigns this season as designers amp up the glamour for evening. Strong silhouettes are a key trend, such as at Tony Ward, where a shimmering asymmetric tulle dress features a dramatic flower-shaped taffeta bustier and removable overskirt. At Monique Lhuillier, rich, sculptural silhouettes are imbued with even greater power, courtesy of bold hues such as fuchsia. The mood for shimmer and sparkle to light up evening soirees reaches poetic levels at Oscar de la Renta, Naeem Khan and AZZI & OSTA, with each drawing on their mastery of fabrics, sculptural lines and embellishments. For Jenny Packham, it is old Hollywood glamour that inspires her rich profusion of sequins, while at Georges Hobeika edgy details bring a striking presence to eveningwear. At Carolina Herrera, designer Wes Gordon was inspired by the historical figure of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, translating this into breathtaking creations that give every modern woman the feeling of empress. If ever there was a season to dress with high drama, this is certainly it.

Savoir-faire to the fore
The new CHANEL Métiers d’art collection is a triumph of artisanal skills
With its focus on brilliant craftsmanship and trailblazing creativity, it’s no surprise that CHANEL has long been synonymous with Métiers d’art, championing the skills, ingenuity and savoirfaire of artisans worldwide.
World-class savoir-faire was once again evident in the CHANEL 2022/23 Métiers d'art collection, showcased in Dakar, Senegal. Virginie Viard, CHANEL’s Artistic Director, took inspiration from the 1970s for this collection, with a focus on the eclectic music mix of that decade, with looks that perfectly capture the spirit, joy and energy of the era. Flowing, flared silhouettes are brought to life by vibrant,
warm colours and geometric patterns, while detailing, such as sequinned embroidery, sparkling pendants and jewelled buttons, provide the finishing touches.
Lace is a byword of fashion savoir-faire artisanship and CHANEL's 2022/23 Métiers d'art collection showcases a delightful variety of lacework, from floral motifs to exquisite overlays, including pieces crafted at the Paloma atelier in Paris, which has long been synonymous with the art of flou, or working with delicate, light, ethereal fabrics.
The technical prowess of Paloma’s experts is clearly evident in Look 45 from the collection, an exquisite fitted
royal blue suede jacket worn over a tiered, white lace dress composed of both graphic and floral lace, and featuring lace smocking. Crafted from two pieces of suede, the jacket features delicate white, black and pink beads that in the hands of Paloma’s artisans become a motif evoking diamond quilting, while doubled silk thread creates a tone-on-tone effect rewoven with beads. Not only is this a demonstration of Paloma’s remarkable artisanship, but also a glimpse of the virtuoso skills that are at the heart of every CHANEL creation, where exceptional savoir-faire meets a thoroughly modern vision.

Dress to impress
Bridal gowns that deliver the wow factor
Making a showstopping entrance, a moment when everyone gasps in awe, is high on many brides’ wish-lists. Thankfully, designers are increasingly innovating with ever more impressive creations that aspire to align with every bride’s dream. Ines Di Santo is renowned for her signature fashion, where proportions are studied and the feminine hourglass shape is celebrated, resulting in gowns that fabulously flatter. Romona Keveza, meanwhile, designs for specific types, including the fashion forward bride, who this season is dressed in a couture-styled stole over a breathtaking strapless gown. Strong yet utterly feminine silhouettes are the signature of Tony Ward, whose hand-made embellishments and fabrics are designed to imbue movement with pure romance. For the ultimate romantic statement, Marchesa combines the dreamy with daring. Elsewhere, embellishments and craftsmanship create the unforgettable at Naeem Khan, Georges Hobeika and Monique Lhuillier, while Viktor&Rolf take natural inspiration to a dramatic high with a veil that is sure to steal the spotlight.

Beyond the status quo
KUSIKOHC excels at the art of fashion
From photography and sculpting to drawing and creative direction, Korean artist, Cho Giseok, has made a name for himself as a contemporary force in diverse creative fields. Now, a new distinction beckons, with the artist’s clothing and accessories brand, KUSIKOHC, earning him renown as a visionary fashion designer.
For such a successful artist, it may seem contradictory that the brand is anchored in the concept of the “right to fail”. Yet, it is such contradictions – with even the brand name alluding to being a mirror reflection of the artist’s name in reverse – that convey his openness to reinvention and belief that taking risks and trying, even if one fails, has the power to effect change. As such, Giseok is ever seeking inspiration, continually pushing forward to think and design beyond the status quo.
The designer’s collection for Autumn/Winter 2023 takes up the theme of the gap between fantasy and reality, and the different ways in which we choose to bridge it. As such, the collection strikes a balance between experimental design and wearable garments, with an oversized silhouette as the focus. The brand’s signature technique of applying 3D fabric motifs makes an appearance both literally and in printed and embroidered variations, while denim becomes paper-like in texture after a process of washing, dyeing and pleating. Black, white, earth, red, yellow and blue tones make up the minimal palette that stays true to the brand’s DNA. Each silhouette is conceived as a character armed with signature slogans, such as the brand’s own motto of “right to fail”. This poetic aesthetic feels as if Cho Giseok is inviting everyone to dream, and to join him in thinking of fashion as an art form in itself.
BREAKING DOWN BOUNDARIES
Juun.J brings a fresh twist to classics
Celebrities love the brand and leading international names have lined up to collaborate, meaning that Juun.J, the global fashion label from South Korea, is taking the world by storm with its ultra-modern, edgy and urban look.
Inspiration started at a young age, when Juun.J’s founder, Jung Wook-Jun, grew up surrounded by the success of his parents’ clothing business. Today, however, he is crafting his own vision for the future of fashion and finding success along the way. For the latest collection, for Autumn/Winter 2023, Juun.J revisits wardrobe essentials, including leather, denim, jersey and wool, giving them an atypical approach by washing or even damaging them. This inspires the
collection’s title of ‘BROKEN’ and delivers an ensemble of thoroughly modern apparel that exudes a luxurious rock punk mood. Despite the destroyed aesthetic of the garments, Juun.J is a master of design, with every item, even a simple T-shirt, exemplifying meticulous tailoring.
The designer’s expert skill and innate flair are evidenced by his membership of the prestigious French fashion institute, the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode and by the Seoul-based brand’s shows having the honour of being presented in Paris. With his serious approach to tailoring, combined with a completely fresh perspective on classics, the future of fashion can only get better.

Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle’s Desert Gems
In the last two decades, guided by its namesake founder, Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle has championed perfumery, elevating it to its rightful place as an art form, and inviting the world’s greatest perfumers to join this quest. Malle himself is considered one of the foremost experts in perfumery, and those invited to create for this perfume house are given what Malle believes essential to achieve true art: total freedom to create, exceptional raw materials, and zero constraints in terms of budget or time.
Empowered by this formula, expert perfumers have created an ever-growing number of incredible olfactory experiences for Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle over the years. French master perfumer, Dominique Ropion, is among the illustrious names who have crafted perfumes for the brand, including its first perfume inspired by the Middle East. Titled The Night, this fragrance is widely considered a masterpiece, bringing together oud and rose, two iconic Middle Eastern notes, in an ode to the time of day when dusk falls, coolness fills the air and the streets erupt in life. The Night was so successful that it led to the creation of the Desert Gems collection, which saw three additional perfumes each weave a new Middle Eastern story in scent. Ropion returned for the second in the series, Promise, which is centred on rose absolute from Turkey and rose essence from Bulgaria, with a base of labdanum and patchouli bringing an intriguing intensity. America’s greatest living perfumer, Carlos Benaïm, brought his skill to the third fragrance, Dawn, where an abundance of natural oud is joined by rose, pink pepper, labdanum and frankincense. For the fourth in the quartet, The Moon, Julien Rasquinet composed a scent in which rose, frankincense and oud meet an abundance of sweet red fruits. As the names suggest, each perfume in this series is a reflection of a significant moment or deeply held value in Middle Eastern life and culture. With the names also written in Arabic, this is a tribute that feels authentic and touches the emotions, just like the experience that awaits in each of these impressive works of art.

WONDERFUL TIME
The new Rolex releases illustrate a desire to reinvent
It’s safe to say that the excitement leading up to the annual new Rolex releases is faithfully rewarded with superlative creations. In 2023 these superlative creations, however, are imbued with an even fresher sense of wonder. Epitomising this uplifting take on tradition is the Oyster Perpetual in 31 mm, 36 mm and 41 mm, whose new lacquered dial is dotted with colourful bubbles, reuniting the five hues introduced to the range in 2020. Colour reigns in the new Day-Date 36, whose dials are made of decorative stone – green aventurine, carnelian and turquoise – making every watch face a unique work of art. Other new versions of the Day-Date 36 bring a colourful and unexpected creative twist to this iconic watch, with the day window presenting a calendar of inspirational words such as ‘Love’, ‘Peace’ and ‘Hope’, and the date window displaying emotions expressed in 31 emojis designed especially for the model.
A daring spirit, of course, has been at the core of the Rolex brand since its beginning. This year, a new model, the 1908, celebrates and immortalizes this, opening a new collection titled Perpetual, whose aim is to reinterpret the traditional wristwatch through the Rolex avant-garde lens. Exuding the brand’s watchmaking heritage with elegance and refinement, while being decidedly contemporary, the 1908 is available in 18 ct yellow or white gold, with an intense white or intense black dial. Notable design features include its slim case, and a movement that was designed and manufactured for this watch.
Among other innovations this year, a new Yacht-Master 42
in RLX titanium marks only the second watch to have the honour of being released by Rolex in this lightweight alloy with excellent corrosion-resistance properties and high mechanical strength. The Sky-Dweller, the choice of world travellers, has been updated in new options and combinations of dials and golds, as well as a new movement equipped with the latest advances in Rolex technology, Calibre 9002. The GMT-Master II is available this year in two new versions – yellow Rolesor and 18 ct yellow gold –with a Cerachrom bezel insert in grey and black ceramic, an entirely new colour combination, elevated by a black lacquer dial and a 24-hour hand in 18 ct yellow gold. A new 40 mm model expands the Explorer range crafted from Oystersteel, an alloy specific to Rolex.
Still in a celebratory mood, this year marks the 60th anniversary of the Cosmograph Daytona, with Rolex giving the entire range a high-precision rework to ensure this legendary watch icon lives on. In addition to the visual refinements and innovations in watchmaking now incorporated in the Cosmograph Daytona is the accolade of a first for the Oyster Perpetual collection: a transparent case back appears on the version in 950 platinum, offering a view of the oscillating weight in 18 ct yellow gold. There is plenty to marvel at in each new version this year, all envisioned and executed to perfection by the masters of time and destined to become icons in their own right.

Diving into the FUTURE
TUDOR launches exciting new Black Bay models and more
Since its launch in 2012, the TUDOR Black Bay has become a true icon, regarded as the emblematic diving watch. After being upgraded to include a manufacture calibre in 2015, this year the Black Bay reaches another milestone in its journey, with the introduction of the model’s latest technical and aesthetic evolution. As well as evolved design elements that will carry it into the future, the newest Black Bay offers a T-fit clasp and is Master Chronometer-certified by METAS, a testament to TUDOR’s expert command of cutting-edge watchmaking technology.
This is an exciting year for Black Bay fans, with a new addition to the line, the Black Bay 54, making its debut. The name hints at the inspiration: the reference 7922 model that became TUDOR’s first dive watch was released in 1954. For 2023, this model returns with a 37 mm case and a manufacture calibre, marking the most true-to-form example of the brand’s original foray into the world of professional divers’ watches. Naturally, it is an appealing blend of classic vintage proportions and modern-day technical prowess.
The Black Bay GMT line – the ideal watch for global travellers - receives a novel addition by way of a new, whimsical dial in opaline, which looks incredible against the distinctive rotatable burgundy and blue bezel.
The unique aesthetic of the Black Bay 31/36/39/41 models, known for their curved cases, has its soft silhouette accentuated by a new curved winding crown this year, as well as a polished bezel and crown that made an appearance on the S&G models debuted in 2022. Three new dial colour choices also make an entrance to the line, in blue, anthracite or light beige, with the minute track rendered in a contrasting colour.
Beyond the Black Bay, the TUDOR Royal range, considered the epitome of versatile and affordable sport-chic, debuts two more dial variants for 2023 in chocolate brown and salmon across the range’s four sizes of 28 mm, 34 mm, 38 mm and 41 mm, and in a choice of stainless steel or gold and steel. Like every TUDOR watch, the first-class technical performance of the Royal is backed by a generous five-year guarantee.

NEW HUES, NEW YOU
Boucheron's novelties brighten everyone's style possibilities
Ushering in a fresh new vibe to one of Boucheron’s iconic collections, pink quartz takes pride of place on Serpent Bohème’s distinctive teardrop-shaped snakehead motifs. Paired with elegant rose gold, this new hue brings a warm glow to rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Diamonds add a dazzling dimension to this pink-hued positivity on several pieces, such as the triple motif ring, where two diamond-encrusted motifs illuminate a pink quartz teardrop surrounded by rosegold beads, or the teardrop single stud earring, where one motif in pavé diamonds sits atop a teardrop made from pink quartz.
This season, Quatre, another Boucheron icon loved for its urban, modern aesthetic, takes a monochrome
approach. The new Quatre Double White Edition plays with the beauty of white gold, white Hyceram and diamonds, with the flagship piece being a new daring hair adornment. The ultra modernity of the collection is reinvigorated with new designs, such as the large hoop earrings entirely paved with diamonds, whose four Quatre codes are divided between two on the left earring and one on the right. Also bringing a contemporary edge is the single ear clip that offers versatile styling options. Boucheron considers all these Quatre Double White Edition pieces as being akin to a blank page, giving everyone the freedom to decide how to let their individuality truly shine.

CHANEL takes watchmaking to dazzling new heights
Travel through time, space and imagination has fuelled the creative inspiration of the CHANEL Watchmaking Creation Studio this year with the latest releases offering an incredible array of timepieces, many produced in limited numbers. The other-worldly approach sees CHANEL icons, the J12, PREMIÈRE, BOY, CODE COCO and Monsieur, appear in breathtaking interpretations, pushing the boundaries of watchmaking prowess, gem-setting and design.
Diamonds strike an unforgettable presence on many of these new releases. The J12 Diamond Tourbillon, for example, features a solitaire diamond rotating on itself to the rhythm of the flying tourbillon movement. In an evocation of the beauty of the night sky, a beloved source of inspiration for CHANEL founder, Gabrielle Chanel, the J12 Night Star has a black glitter-effect dial traversed by a comet in constant movement, while the J12 Cosmic
in white monochrome sparkles with 12 diamonds and shimmering galactic motifs on a phosphorescent dial. The Lion Astroclock, limited to five pieces, unites Gabrielle Chanel’s favourite animal with a comet in 18 ct white gold and a constellation-shaped hand set with diamonds. The Monsieur Tourbillon Meteorite takes the astral inspiration literally, with its dial created from a fragment of meteorite, guaranteeing each piece to be unique. Elsewhere, the digital age inspires graphic editions: the J12 Hyper Cybernetic and Cybernetic feature pixelated motifs, the Première Robot blends elegance with a playful 3D robot, the Boy Cyberdata introduces a diamond-set computer circuit board design on the dial, and Code Coco Cybergold imbues a bracelet watch with a futuristic feel. Watchmaking innovation is also to the fore in many of these versions with in-house designed movements or X-Ray editions showcasing the watch movements.
This year, the Mademoiselle Privé Lion collection presents four new pieces: two cuffs, one watch and one necklace, in which a button conceals the dial and diamonds elevate each to a dazzling masterpiece that is both an adornment and a timepiece in one. Also showcasing exceptional savoir-faire is the Mademoiselle Privé Pique-Aiguilles watch, inspired by the pincushion – the seamstress’s tool that Gabrielle Chanel always kept to hand. Elevating this humble tool to artistic statement, the watch’s oversized dial features one of five fabulous tableaux: a lacework of camellias, a composition of iconic bags, jewels strewn on black tweed, a diamond embroidery, and a jacket at the pattern stage – all referencing iconic CHANEL themes. Pearls and diamonds adorn these miniature scenes that are individual works of art involving intricate craftsmanship and produced in an exclusive number of 20 pieces each.
* CHANEL watches are available at the CHANEL Watches & Fine Jewellery boutique at Lagoona Mall.

New Pandora creations offer a dreamy way to express your style
For the season when the sun’s rays are at their most golden, Pandora is inviting jewellery lovers to embrace the bright new energy and express themselves through their chosen adornments. The new Pandora Moments collection draws its inspiration from the celestial and animal world, with sun and moon symbols capturing the radiance of positivity, light and hope, while dangle charms featuring a bee and a butterfly evoke thoughts of power and renewal. These creations are true marvels, with the bee featuring a cabochon-cut yellow man-made crystal, hand-painted with black enamel, while the butterfly features shaded blue Murano glass wings.
Indeed, expert craftsmanship and innovation are evident in every detail of the collection’s charms in 14 ct gold plating and sterling silver – from lab-created opals to colour-changing enamels, as well as the fact that each Pandora piece is finished by hand. There is also a new braided leather bracelet in a bold blue colour created for this collection, presenting a fresh texture and canvas for styling. Colourful, creative and inspiring, each piece from the new collection offers an authentic way to bring unique touches to everyone’s personal style.
The personal touch
In an exclusive interview, Latitude talks to Nadine Chamoun, founder of The Little Frog, after the mother and child jewellery brand’s great success at the DJWE
What inspired you to launch mother and child jewellery?
The creation of mother and child jewellery is a labour of love. My first collection was inspired by the outline of many characters and from sketches made by kids. The unique relationship that exists between a mother and child requires a special design.
Can you explain the concept in more detail?
The concept presented the challenge of taking an idea, working it with golden wire and turning it into a beautiful and unique piece of jewellery. The Little Frog jewellery is handmade with passion and love. Designs are made of 18 ct gold and are encrusted with a panoply of gemstones including diamonds, black diamonds, rubies, emeralds, turquoise, garnet, onyx and others.
After exhibiting at this year’s DJWE, what insights did you learn about your customers in Qatar?
The DJWE is one of the most anticipated events in Qatar and I would like to thank Fifty One East for giving me the
opportunity to be part of their pavilion. It gave me the chance to meet my clients and learn more about their preferences. I discovered that they appreciate meeting designers in person. They like to understand more about the ideas behind the design and they appreciate seeing a diversified collection.
Can you tell us more about the importance of precious gemstones to your designs?
Precious gemstones are often used as they add colour, sparkle and value to the piece and especially to the characters.
What new additions to your line are you currently working on?
I’m currently expanding the concept with more focus on women, with distinguished designs based on birthstones and gold wire. The new collection will also leverage some of the newest and most popular trends that include pearls, layered necklaces, dainty jewellery and charm necklaces.

INCREDIBLE INDONESIA
With 2023 marking the Qatar-Indonesia Year of Culture, the coming months offer a timely opportunity to explore this Southeast Asian gem. From Jakarta’s vibrant cityscape to Bali’s world-famous beaches, this archipelago has a wealth of attractions for the entire family.
Jakarta
Boasting a diverse history and culture, stunning architecture and natural beauty, Jakarta is the curious traveller’s dream destination, offering a seemingly endless checklist of things to do and places to visit.
Despite being the smallest of the Indonesian provinces, the capital city still spans almost 700 km 2 and is home to more than 10 million residents, making comfy walking shoes and a well-planned itinerary a must.
As Jakarta’s historic centre, the Old Town, or Kota Tua as it’s known, is the ideal sightseeing starting point, providing an opportunity to take in the charming colonial-era buildings, en route to the Jakarta History Museum nearby, where you can learn more about this fascinating city’s past. When it comes to iconic landmarks, no visit to Jakarta is complete without a stop-off at the National Monument, or Monas, which stands at over 130 metres tall and offers stunning city views. Other places of interest include the Istiqlal Mosque, which is nearby, while the bustling Pasar Baru market is perfect for souvenir purchases. If you feel like taking time out from the fast-paced city tempo, Taman Suropati offers welcome respite in the form of a centrally located green space, ideal for catching a breath or enjoying a picnic. One of Jakarta’s many benefits is its proximity to the coast, which makes it ideal for booking an excursion. Quick and convenient, boat trips to the Thousand Islands are among the most popular, unsurprisingly, offering visitors the chance to relax on beautiful unspoilt beaches or swim in the Java sea.
STAY
Offering a glorious combination of Indonesian history and modern-day luxury, The Hermitage is a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, housed in a beautifully restored 1920s building in the city’s Menteng neighbourhood.
DINE
High-end gastronomy and an authentic ambience are both on the menu at Lara Djonggrang, where traditional Indonesian cuisine is served in the delightful setting of a stunning 19th-century Javanese mansion.
SHOP
Browse and buy to your heart’s content at the Ancol Art Market in North Jakarta, where artisans and artists showcase a diverse range of indigenous collectibles that make ideal gifts and keepsakes.
Bali
As a holiday destination, Bali is known to be a beach lover’s hotspot and, while this reputation is thoroughly justified, there is also much more to discover about this island, once you’ve had your fill of the glorious sandy stretches and crystal-clear waters.
Bali’s beaches vary in character themselves, meaning visitors can choose from the lively spots, including the world-famous Kuta Beach, to the more tranquil shores of Sanur for water sports, swimming and sunbathing.
To discover more about the island’s vibrant arts scene, head to the town of Ubud, which is home to the Neka Art Museum and the Agung Rai Museum of Art, among others, or immerse yourself in the local culture firsthand by taking in a traditional dance performance at the Ubud Palace.
The renowned, UNESCO-protected Jatiluwih Rice Terraces provide a welcome change of scene, offering stunning, lush-green landscapes and, for inquisitive minds, opportunities to discover more about the centuries-old, still-used irrigation systems. More greenery, in the form of picturesque gardens, can be found over on the east side of the island, together with delightful fountains, at the Tirta Gangga Water Palace.
For thrill-seekers, Bali offers a fantastic range of activities in and out of the water, from surfing at Uluwatu and white-water rafting on the Ayung River to a trek up Mount Batur. Luckily for visitors looking for a more relaxing experience, the island is also renowned for its many luxurious spas, where traditional Balinese massages, of course, are available, alongside a wealth of other treatments.
STAY
For a beachfront stay, the historic Hotel Tugu Bali in Canggu provides a glorious opportunity to savour Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage, in total comfort, through its art and design, while the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan in Ubud offers the ideal town option, complete with stunning river views, private villas and a world-class spa.

SHOP
Ubud Art Market is an essential stop-off for whiling away a few wonderful hours browsing and buying mementos that range from traditional handicrafts to artworks, including hand-woven baskets and wood carvings.
Beyond Jakarta and Bali
While Jakarta and Bali are Indonesia’s best-known and most popular destinations, the country boasts many other untapped treasure troves if time permits you to venture farther afield.
These include Medan, a large city located in North Sumatra and something of a cultural gem. Regular flights from Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Kualanamu International Airport, which is just a short drive from the city centre, make Medan easy to visit, while its glorious landmarks, including the Maimun Palace, a stunning example of Malay architecture, the Great Mosque of Medan and the Tjong A Fie Mansion, an impressive example of the city’s colonial past, ensure the trip is well worthwhile. A day trip outside of Medan will allow you to appreciate natural beauty, in the form of Lake Toba, one of the world’s largest volcanic lakes.
Foodies may well want to put Surabaya, a renowned culinary hotspot, on their ‘mustvisit’ destination list. Located in East Java, this large city is reachable by direct flight from Jakarta or Bali to Juanda International Airport, about 17 kilometres from the centre. Surabaya’s cuisine includes the famed rawon soup and delicious satay offerings, alongside the mouthwatering rujak cingur salad, brimming with tropical fruits, which can be enjoyed at restaurants or as street food from the local night market (pasar malam). Surabaya is also home to the Cheng Hoo Mosque, a stunning example of Chinese architecture, while the famous Mount Bromo, a picturesque active volcano located in Bromo Tengger National Park, makes for a memorable day out.

Qatar teams up with Indonesia for Year of Culture 2023
Qatar’s Year of Culture initiative has produced a diverse array of bi-national collaborations since its launch and the 2023 edition, which takes place in partnership with Indonesia, looks set to build on this legacy, with an equally exciting schedule planned for the coming months.
An initiative launched by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani in 2012, the Years of Culture was set up to encourage people from different countries to interact, forge closer links and learn from each other’s cultural projects.
Spanning the performing and visual arts, gastronomy, residencies and a cycling tour, the Qatar-Indonesia 2023
Year of Culture features a packed programme that has a special focus on fostering the creative and cultural industries, while also highlighting the connections that extend across the Islamic world.
Details of the schedule were announced at the official opening, held recently at the Museum of Islamic Art, which is also now home to a spectacular collection of Indonesian artefacts, showcased together with other objects from the Southeast Asian and Indian Ocean regions across two new galleries there.
Another early highlight was a mesmerising debut performance of a musical play, titled ‘Hayati: Panji Searching for the Essence of Love’, written specially
for the Year of Culture and inspired by Indonesian folklore stories.
Food has long been a focal point of the annual initiative and, in timely fashion, culinary feasts celebrating Indonesia’s gastronomic heritage were in evidence at Ramadan gatherings across Qatar, with the celebrated Qatari chef Noof Al Marri now preparing to travel to Indonesia to take part in the Ubud Food Festival. More culinary events are planned for the coming months. The Year of Culture is also known for offering opportunities to young creatives and the 2023 edition is no exception, with collaborative residencies and workshops planned across a range of fields that include product and fashion design, photography and art and crafts.
A topical global theme, sustainability is also a byword in the 2023 schedule and, against this backdrop, a cultural tour of Yogyakarta city on Java, scheduled for June, will have cycling as a central element. Led by celebrated Qatari entrepreneur and athlete Ali Bin Towar al-Kuwari in the role of Ambassador for this “CultuRide” tour, many of Qatar’s well-known athletes will travel to Indonesia to take part. This inclusive event will also feature a variety of professional and amateur cycling clubs, along with paracyclists from Qatar and Indonesia. Additional community events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year at yearsofculture.qa.

Precious Reflections
Mathaf shines a spotlight on a golden era in Lebanon’s past
Afascinating and insightful exhibition of over 500 artefacts that transport visitors back in time to what became known as Beirut’s ‘Golden Age’ has opened at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art.
Titled ‘Beirut and the Golden Sixties: A Manifesto of Fragility’, the show takes the form of a wonderful display of photos, paintings and documents, gathered from around 40 collections worldwide, that combine to give visitors a flavour of life in Lebanon’s capital city between 1958 and 1975.
The exhibition has been organised by Mathaf and Qatar Museums as part of the Qatar Creates cultural initiative and runs until August 5, 2023.
Curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, directors of Hamburger Bahnhof National Museum of Contemporary Art in Berlin, and assistant curator Natasha Gasparian, ‘Beirut and the Golden Sixties: A Manifesto of Fragility’ comes to Qatar from France, where it formed part of the 16th Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art, following a launch in Germany.
The 1960s through to the mid-1970s was an era marked by cosmopolitanism, cultural awakening, rapid economic growth and forward-thinking optimism in Lebanon, with the art created at the time helping to both define it and drive it forward, and the artworks featured in the show reflect this.
Creatives that were influential and pioneers of the art movement of the time are among those featured, with Etel Adnan, Huguette Caland, Paul Guiragossian, Shafic Abboud, Cici Sursock, Nadia Saikali and Rafic Charaf just some of the renowned artists whose work can be found in the exhibition.
As the name suggests, ‘Beirut and the Golden Sixties: A Manifesto of Fragility’ also looks beyond the upbeat mood to explore the complex undercurrents of instability that were also present in an era that ended with the outbreak of civil war. It asks whether the ‘Golden Era’ description is truly accurate or somewhat romanticised, given the political and social tensions that escalated over time and what followed.
In addition to the main displays, there is a timely and topical nod to the current challenges that Lebanon faces in the form of a newly commissioned multimedia installation by Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige focused on the devastation caused by the Beirut Port explosion of 2020.
More details on ‘Beirut and the Golden Sixties: A Manifesto of Fragility’, including opening times, can be found at www.mathaf.org.qa.

How Devialet transformed the audio experience
Devialet, the French acoustical engineering company, is on a mission to elevate sound to its rightful place in everyone’s lives – meaning that this brand is taking over the world, thanks to its incredible innovations in the domain of audio.
The company’s breakthrough came when it created what it calls “Analog Digital Hybrid” technology, combining analogue and digital amplification, an innovation that was also a game-changer for the sound industry. Today, Devialet counts more than 200 patents among its achievements in the realm of audio and is continuing to develop additional proprietary technologies to enhance the user listening experience.
The Phantom I hi-fi home sound system features every class-leading Devialet invention, delivering high-fidelity, ultra-dense sound in a compact design, and offering multiple ways of playing music: wirelessly, through a wired connection, or analogue/digital through the Arch accessory. The Phantom II shrinks the size while maintaining the performance, delivering the best size
to power to sound performance ratio in ultra-compact dimensions. Powered by a suite of patented technologies, the Devialet Dione also boasts a a radical size-toperformance ratio and zero compromise on sound quality and immersion, bringing a new standard to cinematic experience in a single high-end device. For life on the go, meanwhile, Devialet launched Mania, its first high fidelity portable speaker, whose cutting-edge Devialet technologies elicit expansive 360° stereo sound, and the Devialet Gemini, whose clarity of sound is combined with advanced Devialet Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) technology for an unbeatable listening experience wherever you may be.
For proof of Devialet’s arrival as the audio brand par excellence, look no further than its collaboration with the Paris Opera, which resulted in a special Devialet sound discovery area set up within the iconic cultural institution, as well as a Devialet collection featuring the Paris Opera logo and gold finishing touches, symbolising the duo’s shared quest for sound and musical perfection.
