A trireme

(derived from Latin: “tres remi:” “three-oar;”

Greek Τριήρης, literally “three-oarer”) was an ancient vessel and a type of galley, a Hellenistic-era warship that was used by the ancient maritime civilizations of the Mediterranean, especially the Phoenicians, ancient Greeks and Romans. The trireme derives its name from its three rows of oars on each side, manned with one man per oar.

Message from the President Dear Graduates, It is so difficult for me to write an au revoir note to you; in fact I kept on avoiding to do so for many reasons: we got used to you; LAU has been your home for many years; since you joined our University, you became cherished members of our close-knit family. You have contributed significantly to the growth of LAU, enhanced our academic life, and added to our vibrant scholarly standards. We saw you “day in and day out” grow intellectually, mature personally, and thrive academically. You have enriched our University by your many talents, brought excitement to our campus in the classroom, in co-curricular activities, and in athletics. You became our true partners in turning LAU into an awesome institution of higher education in the MENA region and beyond. Just to think that very soon you will leave our family is emotionally difficult to accept. Commencement exercises will soon be upon us, and Graduation will embody in one super-charged day all your hard work, your successes, and challenges during your university years. In that day, you will feel pulled in every which direction. You will have friends to say goodbye to, parents and relatives to guide around the campus and make sure they have good seats. You will be gripped by conflicting emotions. You’re hesitant to leave what became for you a second home away from home. But you are excited at the same time, nervous, and not knowing what the future holds for you. Don’t reject or suppress your emotions. This is the biggest and most memorable day of your lives and the memories you will carry with you, you will cherish forever. While education commands a significant chunk of our growing up, change is a way of life; it is inevitable, said Robert Gallagher. Without it, life will be boring. While you worked so hard to reach this hectic, but delightful, moment, I urge you to remember the commitment and devotion your parents had for you, and to think of all the benefits of being a university graduate. We are looking forward to celebrating “your rite of passage,” and sharing in the joy of your significant achievements. The world around us challenges us with new demands and opportunities every day. There were few periods in recent history when artists and designers were as much called upon to participate in the shaping of the world. Today artists and designers play a large role in the shaping of the physical environment and its byproducts, from the macro scale of landscape and cities, to the micro scale of portable gadgets and video games.

As you graduate, you will find yourselves facing new challenges, but also taking part in great opportunities that await you. We hope that your years of education at our school have prepared you well for these tasks, but most importantly, we certainly hope that they have given you the broad educational base that a liberal-based educational system should offer every student, namely the capacity to think for him/herself, and the ability to confront any task, no matter how different, with an experimental and creative approach that does not simply reiterate old models. We hope that your years of study have contributed effectively to nurture your spirit, allowing you to undertake any project with confidence. We trust that you will all continue to develop your skills and abilities as you engage the ‘real world’, while carrying some of the essential lessons that a university like ours can offer: openness and flexibility, the ability to work with others, and a concern for the well-being of people for whom you are designing new places, spaces, buildings, artworks and products. First, do not be afraid to follow your dreams, even if in doing so you may have to change paths often, building on your skills for as so long as you remain inspired to keep learning. If you lose this motivation, actively seek it out. Success will take innovation, ambition, hardworking and humility. Second, always remember what the Hippocratic Oath you took means in your everyday life. ‘To do no harm’ will mean giving it your all. That includes listening to patients, staying abreast of advances in medical practice, and treating the sick to the best of your ability. The well being of your patient must be your compass as you build a career. In caring for your patients, recognize what is before you: an instinctive trust, an extraordinary privilege, and a humbling responsibility. I wish you continuous happiness and success.

Graduation from university is a special occasion, the culmination of years of studying and effort, dreams within reach, and pride in achieving personal and academic goals. Your graduation is all of that and more, because you are the Alice Ramez Chagoury School of Nursing’s “first class.” From that day in September 2010 when you came to the School of Nursing for orientation, until now as you prepare to walk across the graduation stage, you have participated in one “first” after another. Each nursing course you enrolled in was being taught for the first time. Remember the first day you went to the Clinical Simulation Center in the Frem building for class – it was first time for any LAU students to practice on the manikins or use the new task trainers. You were the first students to wear the LAU nursing student uniform. And on and on. On more than one occasion I have thought to myself, “How lucky we are to have these students in our first class.” Why? Because you have been enthusiastic about nursing and excited to be at LAU. You have worked with the faculty and staff to develop aspects of the school and to help make improvements when things were a little rough the first time through. And, you have helped us introduce to the LAU community the meaning of professional nursing and the maturity and commitment of nursing students. It has been exciting and rewarding for the faculty, staff and me to watch you grow and mature over the past three years. Each semester your knowledge of health care and nursing has grown in depth and sophistication. Today we see young nurses who understand the value that our profession brings to the health care system. We see professionals who are prepared to be leaders. And, we see individuals who have life skills that will serve them well as citizens of your country and the world. I will miss hearing your voices as you walk down the hall toward my office. I will look forward to seeing you at future alumni events, when you are again helping with some “firsts” – first alumni meeting, first alumni award for achievement in nursing, and so forth.
