LAU Trireme 2014 by Lebanese American University

EM IR TR A trireme was an ancient vessel and a type of galley, a Hellenistic-era warship that was used by the ancient maritime civilizations of the Mediterranean, especially the Phoenicians, ancient Greeks and Romans. The trireme derives its name from its three rows of oars on each side, manned with one man per oar.

Dear Graduates, In a seminar recently held in the United States, Mr. Amin Maalouf, a Lebanese member of the French Academy, marveled at the benefits of globalization and how, fueled by amazing technological innovations, it brought down the walls of separation among the nations of the world. At the same time, he lamented the fact that the elimination of borders through robust technology, has laid bare the human condition and brought into sharp focus the contradictions of the human clusters which are causing humanity senseless destruction, so much pain, and unfortunate loss of life. In his book, Le Dérèglement du monde, Mr. Maalouf described in gripping terms the paradoxes that humanity is paying dearly for in sweat and blood, but he concluded on a very positive note, affirming his faith in human ingenuity to fix humanity’s most severe ailments. He firmly believed that as long as there are responsible institutions of education in the world, humanity will always be guided by a beacon of hope that will cast away its most threatening and dark moments. Dear Graduates, LAU has been a beacon of hope in our region ever since its inception in 1835, as a school for the education of women in the Ottoman Empire. We have always been guided by our predecessors’ wisdom, inspired by our mission to excel and serve, and imbued by the eternal values that our beloved institution stands for. It is in the heart of this institution that we all continue to learn from our enriching past how to build a bright future, how to nurture the love of excellence in our innermost sanctums, how to care deeply for others, and how to be leaders in a diverse, often troubled, world that needs a great deal of healing. It is hard to believe that soon you will leave this warm and loving nest. You have received at LAU a superb education, helped us in our determined drive for excellence, and contributed significantly to our growth. We are profoundly saddened by your imminent departure; but our profound sadness is somewhat attenuated by our strong sense of pride in your achievements. Amin Maalouf certainly had you in mind when he spoke about his faith in humanity, in the ability of educated youth to address courageously the threats emanating from a globalized, complex, and complicated world. Imbued with LAU values and animated by the excellent education that you have earned here, we are confident that you will be very successful in establishing for yourselves brilliant careers, in contributing generously to the community in which you choose to live, and in making the world a better place for us and for generations to come. We salute your successes and we share in the joy of your accomplishments. As we have been witnessing the transformation of LAU from a college to a full-fledged university for higher education, it is imperative for all of us to ponder and focus forward on two critical imperatives: First, sustain our growth and preserve our achievements, second move LAU to the next level of academic excellence. Commitment to academic excellence and advancement of scholarship is at the heart of LAUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission, and research is an essential component to this mission. Innovation and discovery of new knowledge are the essence of all scholarly achievements. By engaging in innovative research and creative activities, our faculty continually update their information and skills and renew their teaching modalities to become effective providers of knowledge. Our students will in turn benefit from participating in original research and other forms of scholarship, and will enhance their critical and analytical thinking and adopt the healthy culture of curiosity. Competitive research activities cannot be sustained, however, without strong graduate programs, and research innovation cannot be developed without talented graduates. The newly created office of graduate studies and research intends to develop sustainable and innovative research and interdisciplinary graduate programs that can both attract funding as well as talented graduate students and faculty. Our five-year plan is to create uniquely transforming research and graduate programs in focused areas that will establish LAU as a regionally and internationally recognized institution for innovative research and graduate education. The positive impact of these successful research programs in the region cannot be overemphasized and we anticipate that within this time frame such excellence in research and graduate programs will propel LAU into the top research universities of the region. On The Spirit of Things â&#x20AC;&#x153;It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Albert Einstein At a time when we are under the continuous pressure to meet quantifiable goals and measure our success with hard figures, the quote above by one of the greatest scientific thinkers should come as a reminder of the importance, or even the necessity, of keeping alive the flame that we artists, designers, and architects have always carried within us. It is the flame that allows us to bring forth things that are animated by a certain spirit, and to keep open the possibility of multiple interpretations that do not close our intellectual horizon. It is this open spirit that we nurture at the School of Architecture & Design at LAU, charting a middle course between learning basic skills and the initiation into critical thinking, which draws upon the underlying cultural background that each one of us carries within. And it is this liberal pedagogical approach that has allowed our graduates to develop their own approach, as well as self-confidence, and the ability to undertake various artistic and design challenges. With its existing programs in Fine Arts, Interior Design, Architecture, Graphic Design, and the newly established Fashion Design program, the School continues to move forward, offering a variety of majors within a cultural setting that encourages innovative experimentation coupled with theoretical foundation, and a training in craftsmanship and new technologies. Our graduates will move into the world animated by this positive spirit and the desire to enhance their lives and the lives of those around them. Congratulations to the Gilbert and Rose Mary Chagoury School of Medicine class graduates, you are LAU’s second class of medical doctors. All of us, faculty, staff and students are proud of your achievements and look forward to your contribution in developing further the healthcare system in Lebanon and beyond. We also look at you as a class of pioneers who have joined in the vision of creating a unique type of physician. I am delighted that both you and LAU have succeeded in this task; you have demonstrated a profound commitment to help your patients and communities, and I know that this commitment will continue in the years ahead. As this chapter of your life ends, a new and equally exciting one begins. You are embarking on a journey that will take you all along a different path. Today, as you become the master of your own fate, I implore you not to forget the following principles: First, do not be afraid to follow your dreams, even if in doing so you may have to change paths often, building on your skills for as so long as you remain inspired to keep learning. If you lose this motivation, actively seek it out. Success will take innovation, ambition, hard work and humility. Second, always remember what the Hippocratic Oath you took means in your everyday life. ‘To do no harm’ will mean giving it your all. That includes listening to patients, staying abreast of advances in medical practice, and treating the sick to the best of your ability. The well-being of your patient must be your compass as you build a career. In caring for your patients, recognize what is before you: an Instinctive trust, an extraordinary privilege, and a humbling responsibility. I wish you continuous happiness and success. Youssef G. Dear Graduating Professional Nurses, 2014 As the second BSN class at LAU you will always hold a unique place in the school’s history, for you have helped bring our vision to life. The first aspect of the vision is to be “the pioneering school of nursing in Lebanon and the Middle East region through interprofessional education of knowledgeable, skilled and conscientious professional nurses.” Your class is an early outcome of the vision and also an element which is helping us attain the full vision. You have been a lively class, forming strong bonds with each other and a firm commitment to the school. You have helped the faculty, staff and me shape the school into a vibrant community. Your feedback to faculty has been used to refine the courses. Your input about the challenges you encountered, such as the taxing travel to clinical sites, assisted us to make changes so you could stay focused on your studies. Your interactions with faculty, staff and students in other LAU schools and departments have helped spread more accurate perceptions about nursing. And, you have helped us progress towards our vision through your presence at a growing number of hospitals and health care agencies in Lebanon. Each time you went to a new clinical agency and interacted with a new group of staff you were creating a favorable reputation for our program. I am confident you will continue to help us fulfill our vision. You may be working at a health care agency in Lebanon, pursuing graduate studies, or traveling to work outside. Where ever you settle you are the embodiment of our aspirations as a school. Individual personalities, professional abilities and career ambitions that were nurtured through the BSN program show that we are not training robots. Instead, you are young professionals who are using your knowledge, sound judgment, and caring behaviors to ensure the best nursing care possible for clients.
