A trireme was an ancient vessel and a type of galley, a Hellenistic-era warship that was used by the ancient maritime civilizations of the Mediterranean, especially the Phoenicians, ancient Greeks and Romans. The trireme derives its name from its three rows of oars on each side, manned with one man per oar.

This world is but a canvas to our imagination - Henry David Thorea I would like to start my message to our graduating students this year with this concise but very expressive quote from one of the great thinkers of the Transcendentalist movement in Nineteenth century America, Henry David Thoreau. In parallel to his intellectual activity, Thoreau ran the family business of manufacturing graphite pencils, thus combining between intellectual work and craftsmanship. A lover of nature, Thoreau spent some part of his life in almost seclusion, living in a primitive hut that he built on the banks of the great lake of Walden, near the town of Concord in Massachusetts. Thoreau’s message of harmony with nature, of ethical work, of fighting for basic human rights, remains of great relevance, especially in our region today. This message carries a call to our graduates to bear the standard not only of professionalism, but also of integrity, ethical work, and care for the environment and its limited resources, all of which are at the core of the mission of the artist, designer, and architect of tomorrow. It is a call to our graduates to move into the world animated by a positive spirit and a desire to enhance not only their lives, but also the lives of those around them, and to embrace and respect diversity and difference. The world is a canvas to your imagination, but a canvas that must be also treated with care and affection. I take this opportunity to congratulate each one of you on your distinctive achievements, and wish you all the success you deserve.

Dear Graduates of the School of Arts and Sciences, On behalf of the faculty and staff of the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS), it is my pleasure and honor to congratulate you for the successful completion of your university degree and to congratulate your parents who provided you with all kinds of support throughout your journey. Some of you will pursue higher degrees and others will seek employment or business opportunities. Whichever path you select, aim high and be committed to excellence through hard work, initiative-taking, and creativity, coupled with ethics and integrity. Always, remember that life-long learning is key to continued success. Also, keep in mind that your individual and collective contributions will influence the future of your country. Be responsible citizens and agents of progress. In these difficult times, your country needs you to lead in promoting humanistic values, acceptance of diversity, and national unity. Although you are physically leaving LAU, we still need your support by becoming our ambassadors to your social and professional circles. You can do this by, firstly, presenting the right and bright image of an LAU graduate, and, secondly, by telling the world about our pioneer SAS programs and about our historic programs that are getting stronger and richer. Also, tell your circles about our commitment to student-centeredness and our philosophy of educating the whole person. From our side, we promise you to continue to: hire faculty with excellent qualifications, improve our teaching methods, respond to student needs in terms of learning support and advising, and enhance our research output, which was recently recognized by the Times Higher Education’s ranking of LAU as second in the Arab region in terms of research quality/citations. ACADEMICS MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Youssef G. Comair | Dean of the School of Medicine Lebanese American University
Dear Graduates 2015, It gives me great pleasure to write to congratulate you on the momentous occasion of your graduation from the Lebanese American University Gilbert and Rose Mary Chagoury School of Medicine. You have worked so hard and accomplished so much, and we, as your medical school faculty, administrators and fellow students, could not be prouder of your achievements. While it may be tempting to rest on your laurels, this important milestone is only one step toward your longterm goals. Yet the skills, attitudes, professionalism, and relationships that you have acquired and nourished while here will only continue to grow and to serve you on future steps of your journey. As you embark on this new and exciting path, I implore you not to lose sight of some guiding principles: First and foremost, have the courage to follow your dreams, and do not be afraid if that means having to explore novel paths. Second, never stop being a student and seeking to educate your minds and souls, for the profession you have chosen is one of lifelong learning. Finally, always remember the Hippocratic Oath you took “to do no harm�, for it implies a lifelong of active listening to patients, staying abreast of advances in medicine, treating the sick to the best of your ability, and recognizing the limits of your knowledge and powers. A yearbook is a document to come back to year after year and decade after decade. I hope that as time marches on and as the pictures fade, the beautiful memories captured in this book will persist and will motivate you to come back to your medical school in order to help inspire, advise and teach future generations of students. If I had to describe Boutros, I would say he was an extraordinary “Man of Faith”. Four (plus) years he was fighting cancer and never accepted the doctors’ verdict of few remaining months to live. He never gave up hope that one day God’s healing hand will set him free of pain and illness. Always smiling and, as ever, willing to help, he kept on going with all his belief and devotion. In September, when Mario tragically died in a car accident, and despite his intensifying sickness, Boutros graciously accepted God’s will but started looking forward to join his beloved son.
