Introduction to the primer Objective: The goal of this primer is for literacy students to practice their reading and writing skills while learning about everyday topics. The primer should preferably be developed with the guidance of a teacher or person who can read fluently, except for the activities indicated to do at home. The sheets of the primer are not sewn so that the exercises can be copied easily and can be done as many times as necessary.

The shift in mobility In 2002, the entire Bogotรก bus system changed. Before there were many buses from different companies but it was very difficult to put order. If one went from one bus to another had to pay the ticket again, the buses were very old and there was a lot of pollution, among other problems.

Discuss the following questions in a group:

A) What other characteristics did the bus system have before the change in 2002?

B) What was the biggest change you noticed?

C) What things seem easier to you, and what things seem more difficult to you of the current service?

The new transport system In order for Bogota citizens to be able to use the buses easier, the system became one. It’s name, as many already know, is sitp (integrated public transport system). It is important to understand some of the changes to use the sitp easier. In the following pages of the book we will know those changes.

Who will be the winner? Isabela is 12 years old and her brother Felipe is 8 years old. When they go out with their parents in the car, they usually play the same game. Each one them chooses a color and they count how many cars of that color they see. At the end of the game, the one who has seen the largest number of cars is the winner.

Isabela has a new idea One day being at home, Isabela proposes a different game. • Isabela: (excited) I have a good idea, now let’s play with buses. • Felipe: Yes, I think it’s a good idea. There are buses of many different colors. • Isabela: the bad thing is that I do not know what they are for. • Felipe: (thoughtful) We can make a memory game to learn about them. • Isabela: Yes, it’s fun. We’re going to tell mom to help us make the cards.

What does each color mean? The following is the memory game for two players that Isabela and Felipe made. Find a partner and read the instructions together.

Game instructions:

• Read the description of the different buses carefully before detaching them.

• Detach all the cards and put them face down.

• Flip up to two cards per turn trying to find matching

pairs. When you find a matching pair, keep it. • The one with the largest number of cards when all the pairs have been found is the winner.
